#the interactive feeder will be good enrichment
mary-and-annie · 1 year
Text
I'm changing the girls' morning feeding routine, so instead of their kibble going into a bowl it is instead going into an interactive feeder (nighttime feed is still in the bowl). They haven't really picked up the nuance of smacking the shit out of it for their food yet lmao.
Probably going to mix a few treats into it to really get Mary's attention.
Wish me luck! My girls are absolute sticklers for routine.

Regarding that last video; isnt it ok to feed monkeys like that if they live in a sanctuary? How can we tell if theyre living in a good place like a sanctuary, versus living in a bad place like someones backyard?
Reputable sanctuaries will not allow guests to feed the primates! If a video/photo source is unclear, here are some signs you can look for to tell if a primate is being kept as a pet or at a reputable facility:
1. How is the primate being fed? Reputable facilities will never feed primates by holding out food with a bare hand. Professionals will hand-feed animals but they will always do so safely (through barriers) and rarely share content of them doing so. Sharing content of staff feeding, handling, or otherwise interacting with animals is an industry no-no as it can blur the lines of what's safe/acceptable interaction for the general public.
Some feeding red flags include: a person getting very close with no barrier (like a fence), junk food being given (some sanctuaries do give treats that fall into this category, but they don't tend to post content of it), and infants being fed without their mother being around.
Some green flags in this category would be: Staff wearing gloves (and masks in indoor spaces) while handling food/feeding animals, puzzle feeders, and food based enrichment devices!
2. What kind of barriers are there? Reputable facilities will separate people and primates using glass, metal mesh, or fencing. Unprotected contact is a red flag, but can happen at sanctuaries and zoos by professionally trained individuals and should not be promoted for the public to attempt.
3. Is the primate alone? Reputable facilities will house a social species in troops, and house their primates only with appropriate species in a mixed exhibit. If you see a monkey holding a duckling or a chimp with a tiger cub? Always a bad sign.
There are other signs that a primate is being kept as a pet that are more obvious such as being inside a house, wearing clothes, or otherwise engaging in unnaturally human behavior, but even when these are absent the situation can be a bad one. I am automatically skeptical of Japanese macaque content in general because of how often they're exploited for content, so whenever possible, find the source of the video/photo for more info!

(@hearthome-habitant) Uh... hey there. I know we haven't interacted before, but I don't know who else to ask this.
You seem to know a lot about Murkrow... do you mind going into more detail about how to care for them?
...Also, if want to share some knowledge about Ghost types, I'd appreciate it. There's a bunch native to Lost Tower, and I want to be prepared to both face and care for one.
Hello! That's alright, I may live in the middle of Eterna Forest, but I don't mind being asked questions! Even as obsessed as I was with ghosts, I always loved flying types too, and Murkrow captured my heart early on.
They're omnivores in the wild, so while I've never known one to turn up their nose at a berry feast, it shouldn't be all they eat! If you choose to feed them kibble, something high-energy with plenty of protein is ideal. Like most Flying types, they have a fast metabolism, and I suspect their habit of cooking up mischief takes extra energy, heh!
They're also just very active in general. Whenever they're out of their ball they like to be Doing Something, whether it's exploring or enrichment activities like puzzle feeders or teasing their trainer and team.
It might take a little patience to bond with them, they can be pretty aloof at first. But they respond well to being engaged together! Battling, playing, conspiring, even eating together sometimes. My first Murkrow bonded with my ghosts through making mischief together. They may be dark types, but they're still highly social creatures!
Battling with a Murkrow in my experience works best if you can leverage their speed and hard-hitting tactics. They can also work strategically, they're smart enough to keep up. They can't take hits as well as they can dish it out though, so it might be a good idea to work on their endurance.
And facing the ghosts in the Lost Tower… I went there before I officially started my journey. It was my first time meeting a ghost type in person! They don't have to be super powerful to get what they need (or play how they want) there, so you can focus on strategizing and overcoming their tricks.
The cool thing about dark types is that they generally keep their confidence up even when ghosts use tactics that can frustrate and scare other types. Going invisible, creating an eerie atmosphere, inducing confusion… It's really neat to watch actually!
The ghosts of Sinnoh don't have much in the way of physical strength, so what you're probably going to see is a lot of tricks and misdirection and maybe an attempt to scare you off rather than a full-frontal assault. Ghosts in general defend themselves mostly by playing the psychological field! Their whole strategy is usually "try not to get hit in the first place", because they typically can't take hits very well.
You can definitely use it against them. Murkrow can learn Haze, which is really useful for revealing their tricks! Feint Attack is also stellar against ghosts, because they can lock onto the ghost even when they're hiding and still hit them, and it leverages both Murkrow's power and the ghost's weak defenses.
So I know that was a lot of information. I hope it wasn't overwhelming, and I hope it helps! Best of luck on your journey, by the way, and I would recommend maybe bringing some cleanse tags along, just in case the ghosts turn out to be particularly active that day. Happy travels!

Hi! I saw the post about octopusseseses and I went down a rabbit hole of octopus-human interaction vids, and apparently some people have a pet one. Thoughts on hobbyist aquarium keepers with octos? It seems like a very difficult animal to care for properly at home, but an interesting one. There's a lot of conflicting info on if one can ethically keep one at all. Sadly, I have chronic "cute i want one" disease when I see any animal. But I can't keep houseplants alive, so I won't, don't worry lol
Small octopuses can be successfully kept as a pet, but they do require a specialized tank and specialized care, and the smaller species can have a lifespan of 1-2 years. Overall my opinion is that as a pet, the amount of specialized care and expense that goes into keeping an octopus is just...not worth it for their short lifespan. Also I do NOT think anyone should get an octopus unless they're experienced with keeping saltwater aquariums. Here's a quick list of things that need to be kept in mind for an octopus.
-Lifeapan: like I said, smaller species of octopus that you can find in the hobby have shorter lifespans. You'd pretty much be setting a whole system up to keep one animal for a relatively short time.
-Octo-Proofing: the escape stories of octopuses are only slightly exaggerated. Public aquariums keep their octos in tanks designed to hold an octopus. They can climb, they're strong, and they have no bones and too much curiosity. An octopus tank will need a lid that is latched down, plus every single filter intake and return and overflow and ANYTHING will need mesh attached and attached in a way that the octopus can't just figure out how to rip it off. You will then have to clean that mesh frequently to make sure it doesn't get clogged up and mess your whole tank up
-Filtration: octopuses are messy. They have mucus that comes off them, they toss bones and shells from their food all over the tank and eat daily. They're sensitive to high nitrates and their hemocyanin blood makes them sensitive to shifts in pH. You'll want a good protein skimmer at least and I'd recommend a system with a sump that'll allow good gas exchange while still being able to keep the top of the tank closed up against octopus escapes. You'll want to do weekly water changes and for smaller systems it's better to just set up an automatic top-off to keep the salinity stable.
-Tankmates: you won't have any tank mates that last long except maybe some tiny asterina starfish and corals.
-Bastard Factor: ok so I don't know if it's common in the hobby but it is not unheard of for some smaller octo species with lidded tanks to figure out that if they can push the lid up just enough to spray water out of the tank then the lid will open up and other such bastard animal shenanigans that sound charming and fun to read but are way less charming to actually deal with.
-Food: so this isn't impossible but they do need a variety of prey items that are sometimes more expensive. Octos are opportunistic hunters but most of their prey consists of invertebrates and you'll want to offer a good mix through the week for the best nutrition. This can include whole small clams/mussels, small crabs, krill, squid chunks, shrimp, and occasional fish like silversides.
-Enrichment: these are smart animals, which is the appeal! But even when you're not interacting with them the octopus is going to need things to interact with. This can be puzzle feeders, toys to take apart, plastic jars, frozen whole small clams/crabs, octopus popsicles made of frozen saltwater with food inside (which will also make a mess of your water as it melts!) and then you need to change up the items offered or add multiple items through the day.
So overall I would say it's possible to keep an octopus ethically as a pet if you're already an experienced aquarium hobbyist who is able to do a specialized system and the extra routine of enrichment. But the money, time, effort, money, and MONEY involved just makes them not really worth it as a pet. And each one has a different personality, so there is no guarantee that you'll have an octopus that has any interest in human interaction.

Training Your Dogs And Cats
Training Your Dogs and Cats: Effective Methods for a Well-Behaved Pet
Buy Now
Introduction: Training your pets, whether they are dogs or cats, is essential for fostering a harmonious relationship between you and your furry companions. While dogs and cats have different temperaments and learning styles, both can benefit greatly from structured training. In this article, we will explore effective methods for training both dogs and cats, helping you establish clear communication and mutual understanding with your pets.
Understanding the Differences: Before diving into training techniques, it's crucial to acknowledge the inherent differences between dogs and cats. Dogs are pack animals with a strong desire to please their owners, making them highly trainable through positive reinforcement. On the other hand, cats are more independent creatures, often motivated by their own desires and instincts. Understanding these differences will inform your approach to training each species.
Training Dogs:
Start Early: Training should begin as early as possible to instill good behaviors and prevent bad habits from forming. Puppies are like sponges, eager to learn and please their owners.
Positive Reinforcement: Use rewards such as treats, praise, and playtime to reinforce desired behaviors. Dogs respond well to positive reinforcement and will quickly associate good behavior with pleasant consequences.
Consistency: Be consistent in your commands and expectations. Use the same cues for specific behaviors and enforce rules consistently. Inconsistency can confuse your dog and hinder the training process.
Patience and Persistence: Training takes time and patience. Be prepared to repeat commands and exercises multiple times, and don't get discouraged by setbacks. Consistent practice will yield results over time.
Socialization: Expose your dog to various environments, people, and other animals to promote socialization and prevent fear or aggression. Early socialization is crucial for developing a well-adjusted and confident dog.
Buy Now
Training Cats:
Respect Their Independence: Unlike dogs, cats may not be as motivated to please their owners. Respect their independent nature and avoid using force or punishment in training.
Use Positive Reinforcement: Similar to dogs, cats respond well to positive reinforcement. Reward good behavior with treats, affection, or playtime to encourage repetition.
Clicker Training: Clicker training can be effective for teaching cats specific behaviors, such as sitting or coming when called. Pairing a clicking sound with a treat reinforces the desired action.
Patience and Timing: Cats may take longer to learn commands compared to dogs, so patience is key. Timing is also crucial – reward desired behaviors immediately to reinforce the connection between action and consequence.
Enrichment: Provide plenty of mental and physical stimulation for your cat through interactive toys, scratching posts, and puzzle feeders. Engaging their natural instincts will keep them mentally sharp and satisfied.
Buy Now
Conclusion: Training your dogs and cats requires patience, consistency, and a deep understanding of their individual needs and behaviors. By employing positive reinforcement techniques, respecting their natural instincts, and providing ample opportunities for socialization and enrichment, you can cultivate a strong bond with your pets built on trust and mutual respect. Remember, training is an ongoing process that requires dedication and commitment, but the rewards of a well-behaved and happy pet are well worth the effort.

Wagging Tails and Smarty Paws - The Charm of Interactive Dog Toys
Before we delve into the reviews, let's understand why interactive dog toys are the next big thing in pet enrichment. Dogs, like us, need mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy. Interactive toys provide a cognitive challenge, keeping those tails wagging and minds sharp. These toys are designed to mimic real-life scenarios, promoting problem-solving skills and preventing boredom-induced mischief. Now, let's explore the diverse world of interactive dog toys that promise to turn playtime into a brain-boosting adventure.
The Kibble Quest - Puzzle Feeders as Interactive Dog Toys
First up in our review is the fascinating realm of puzzle feeders. These interactive dog toys not only satisfy your pup's hunger but also engage their problem-solving abilities. Take the Maze Muncher 3000, for example—a maze-like contraption that dispenses kibble as your dog maneuvers through it. With its adjustable difficulty levels, this toy grows with your furry friend, providing endless hours of mental stimulation. The market is brimming with similar options, each adding a unique twist to mealtime.

So, go ahead, unleash the joy, and watch as your dog's tail wags in appreciation of their newfound smart fun.

A Comprehensive Overview of Ginger Cat Breeds
Ginger cats, those charming felines adorned with orange, red, or yellowish fur, possess a unique and vibrant allure. In this article, we will delve into the enchanting world of ginger cat breeds, delving into their distinctive characteristics, care requirements, and the captivating qualities that set them apart.
Tumblr media
Introduction to Ginger Cat Breeds
Ginger cat breeds encompass a captivating spectrum of shades, ranging from the gentle hues of apricot to the fiery depths of orange. While any cat can sport a ginger coat, certain pedigreed breeds have become renowned for their iconic red fur. Among these distinguished feline companions, we find the Abyssinian, Turkish Angora, Turkish Van, Somali, and American Shorthair, each with its own distinct charm.
Ginger cats tend to exhibit outgoing and sociable personalities. They have an innate ability to forge strong bonds with their human families and thrive in environments rich with playtime and interaction. Their boundless energy and playful demeanor make them delightful additions to any household. In essence, ginger breeds are exceptional companion cats.
Appearance: These medium-sized felines are adorned with resplendent ginger coats, often accompanied by striking green or golden eyes.
Characteristics: They are known for their intelligence, exuberance, sociability, and unwavering loyalty.
Popularity: While ginger coats have gained widespread popularity, specific ginger breeds remain relatively rare.
Temperament: Ginger cats are typically active, engaging, outgoing, and affectionate in nature.
Lifespan: On average, they enjoy a lifespan of 12 to 15 years.
Coat: Ginger cats may have either short or longhaired coats, both displaying the vibrant ginger hues that define them.
Ginger cats, particularly the pedigreed varieties, trace their roots back to original breeds such as Persians, Siamese, and regional Turkish cats.
Caring for Your Beloved Ginger Cat
Nutrition: Provide high-protein cat food, raw diets, or homemade recipes rich in meat to support their energetic lifestyle.
Environment: Enrich their lives with interactive toys, cat trees, scratching posts, and ample playtime and human interaction. Access to windows for bird-watching can be particularly enjoyable.
Grooming: Short-haired ginger cats benefit from weekly brushing, while their longhaired counterparts require daily attention to prevent matting. Regular nail trims every 2-3 weeks are essential, and it's advisable to check their ears and teeth weekly.
Enrichment: Keep your ginger cat engaged with puzzle feeders, treat-dispensing balls, catnip, and a rotation of stimulating toys. Consider clicker training to challenge their minds and provide mental stimulation.
Bringing a Ginger Cat into Your Home
Ginger cats are cherished companions worldwide, with North America and Europe being particularly fond of them. Original Turkish breeds can still be found in their native regions.
The cost of acquiring a ginger cat can vary widely, ranging from $500 to $1200 USD, depending on the rarity of the breed.
Consider adopting from reputable rescue organizations such as Ginger’s Pet Rescue, Orange Tabby Cat Rescue, or Turkish Angora Rescue.
Before finalizing the adoption, ensure you:
Check for general health indicators: Ensure the cat is active, maintains a healthy weight, and exhibits a good coat condition.
Verify vaccination records: Confirm that the cat is up to date on vaccinations, including FVRCP, rabies, and feline leukemia.
Review the medical history: Familiarize yourself with any pre-existing conditions the cat may have.
Preparing Your Home for a Feline Friend
Cat-proof your home by securing cables and removing any potentially toxic items. Provide an abundance of toys and vertical spaces for climbing and exploration.
Have essential supplies ready, including food bowls, a litter box, a scratching post, and cat trees or perches. Be sure to select cat-friendly plants.
Consider useful supplies like interactive toys, dental care treats, nail trimmers, and pet insurance.
Keep in mind that certain diseases, such as kidney disease, dental issues, and feline leukemia, can be of concern. Schedule annual vet visits to safeguard your ginger cat's health.
Choosing the Perfect Name for Your Ginger Cat
Selecting a name for your ginger cat can be a delightful endeavor. Given their vibrant personalities, opt for fun and lively names that reflect their unique charm. Popular choices include Spice, Maple, Marmalade, Pepper, Pumpkin, or names inspired by food and beverages.
We hope this comprehensive guide has provided you with valuable insights into the world of delightful ginger cat breeds. Prolonging a Dog's Life: Tips for a Longer, Healthier Companion
Tumblr media
how to prolong dogs life
Prolonging a dog's life is a goal every responsible pet owner shares. Dogs bring joy and friendship into our lives, and we only naturally want them to live long, healthy lives. Fortunately, pet owners can take several proactive steps to help their furry friends thrive and enjoy a longer lifespan. This post will examine these tactics in detail and offer insightful advice on improving your dog's general well-being.
Provide a Balanced Diet:
One of the foundational pillars of extending a dog's life is a balanced diet. Dogs require a diet rich in essential nutrients, including proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals. Feeding them high-quality dog food, preferably recommended by a veterinarian, ensures they receive all the nutrients for optimal health. Avoiding overfeeding and providing portion control is equally necessary to deter obesity, which can lead to various health issues.
Regular Exercise:
Exercise is key to a dog's longevity. Daily physical activity keeps your dog in shape and stimulates their mind, reducing the risk of behavioral problems. Engaging in mentally stimulating activities, playtime, and regular walks is important. Adapt the exercise regimen to your dog's age, breed, and energy level. To develop an appropriate exercise regimen, speak with your veterinarian.
Routine Veterinary Care:
Visiting the vet regularly is crucial for monitoring your dog's health and identifying potential problems early. Vaccinations, dental care, and preventive measures against parasites (such as fleas and ticks) are essential to routine veterinary care. Discuss appropriate vaccination schedules and health screenings for your dog's breed with your vet.
Maintain a Healthy Weight:
Obesity is a common issue among dogs and can significantly reduce their lifespan. To prolong your dog's life, monitor their weight and confirm their healthy body condition. See your veterinarian for a personalized weight-management plan if your dog is overweight. This plan may involve dietary changes and increased exercise.
Dental Care:
Oral health plays a crucial role in a dog's overall well-being. Infections and other medical conditions can result from dental problems. Regular brushing, dental chews, and professional dental cleanings can help keep your dog's teeth and gums healthy, as advised by your veterinarian.
Mental Stimulation:
Exercise on the body is not as important as mental stimulation. To keep your dog's mind active, provide them with interactive toys, puzzle feeders, and training sessions. Mental enrichment can make your dog friend happier and more content by preventing boredom.
Provide Love and Social Interaction:
Dogs thrive on social interaction and the love of their human companions. Spend quality time with your dog, offer affection, and ensure they feel secure and loved. A happy dog is a healthier dog.
Safety First:
Protect your dog from accidents and potential hazards. Use a leash during walks, ensure a secure and fenced yard, and be cautious about toxic substances in your home and garden. Regularly check for potential dangers in your dog's environment.
It's a fulfilling journey to extend your dog's life, and it requires good food, exercise, medical attention, and emotional support. You can help your four-legged friend live a longer, happier life by paying attention to his or her health and using these tips. Recall that a happy and healthy dog will bring you joy and make you a treasured companion for years.

Dog Training Decoded: Understanding Canine Behavior for Effective Training
Tumblr media
Have you ever wondered why some people seem to effortlessly train their dogs while others struggle? The key lies in understanding canine behavior. Dogs are intelligent creatures with complex emotions and instincts. By decoding their behavior, we gain valuable insight into how to effectively train them. In this article, we will delve into the fascinating world of dog training, exploring the reasons behind their behavior and providing you with actionable tips for successful training.
Dogs thrive on positive reinforcement. Rather than resorting to punishment, which can instill fear and aggression, focus on rewarding good behavior. For example, when your dog follows a command, offer verbal praise and a tasty treat. By associating positive consequences with desired actions, you create a joyful, cooperative learning environment. Who wouldn't want to learn when rewarded with love and treats?
In order to effectively train your canine companion, it's crucial to understand their instincts. Dogs are pack animals, which means they look for a leader to follow. By establishing yourself as the pack leader, you earn their respect and trust. This can be achieved through consistent training, setting clear boundaries, and providing structure in their daily routines. When your dog knows their place in the pack, they feel secure and confident.
One common mistake dog owners make is misinterpreting their dog's behavior. For example, when a dog barks excessively, it's often a manifestation of fear or anxiety. Yelling or scolding will only reinforce their negative emotions. Instead, identify the underlying cause and address it directly. Calming techniques, such as providing a safe space or introducing gradual exposure to triggers, can make a world of difference. Empathy and understanding go a long way in building a strong bond with your furry friend.
Communication is key in dog training. It's crucial to establish clear signals and cues that your dog understands. You can start by using simple commands like "sit," "stay," or "come." Consistency is vital, so use the same words and gestures every time. Be patient and give your dog time to process the information. Remember, they are learning a new language. With practice and repetition, your dog will eventually respond to your cues like a pro.
Did you know that mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise for dogs? Boredom can lead to destructive behavior and disobedience. Engage your dog's mind by incorporating interactive toys, puzzle feeders, and obedience games into their routine. Not only will this provide mental enrichment, but it will also strengthen the bond between you and your furry companion. A stimulated dog is a happy and well-behaved dog.
As responsible dog owners, it's our duty to ensure the safety and well-being of our pets. Dog training plays a vital role in this. By understanding canine behavior and training techniques, we can create a harmonious relationship with our four-legged friends. Remember to approach training with positivity, empathy, and patience. With a little bit of effort and a whole lot of love, you'll soon find yourself decoding your dog's behavior like a pro trainer.
Section 2 - Creating a Positive Environment for Training
Have you ever wondered why your dog sometimes seems unresponsive during training sessions? The answer may lie in the environment you're creating for them. Dogs are highly sensitive to their surroundings, and a negative or distracting environment can hinder their ability to focus. In this section, we will explore the importance of creating a positive and distraction-free environment for effective training.
Dogs are perceptive creatures, and they can easily pick up on our emotions. If you approach training with frustration or impatience, your dog will sense it and mirror your negative energy. Instead, create a calm and positive atmosphere. Speak in soothing tones, use encouraging words, and maintain a relaxed body language. When you exude positivity, your dog will be more inclined to engage and learn.
When it comes to learning, dogs need consistency and routine. Establish a designated area for training, free from distractions such as loud noises or other pets. Remove any temptations that could divert their attention, such as toys or food. By creating a focused environment, you set the stage for successful training sessions. Remember, you're not just training your dog; you're also training yourself to be a patient, proactive trainer.
Physical exercise is important for dogs, but mental stimulation is equally vital. Before beginning a training session, make sure your dog has had the opportunity to release excess energy through play or exercise. A tired dog is more likely to be receptive to training and less prone to distractions. So, grab a ball, go for a walk, or engage in interactive play to get them ready for a productive training session.
In order to reinforce positive behavior, timing is everything. Dogs operate on associations, so timely rewards are crucial. When your dog performs a desired behavior, such as sitting or staying, reward them immediately. This creates a clear cause-and-effect connection for your dog, making it easier for them to understand what you're asking of them. Remember, practice makes perfect, so seize every opportunity to reward good behavior.
Training sessions should be short and frequent, rather than long and sporadic. Dogs have limited attention spans, so keep their sessions concise to maintain their focus. Aim for multiple short sessions spread throughout the day, rather than one extended session. This approach prevents boredom and ensures your dog remains engaged. The more engaged they are, the faster they'll learn and progress in their training journey.
Section 3 - Addressing Common Behavioral Issues
Have you ever struggled with a misbehaving dog? From barking excessively to pulling on the leash, addressing common behavioral issues can be frustrating. Thankfully, understanding the underlying causes can help you tackle these problems effectively. In this section, we will explore some common behavioral issues and provide tips to overcome them, ensuring a harmonious relationship with your furry friend.
Barking is a natural way for dogs to communicate, but excessive barking can disrupt your peace and annoy your neighbors. Dogs bark for a variety of reasons, including fear, boredom, or wanting attention. To address excessive barking, it's important to identify the root cause. Is your dog barking out of fear or anxiety? Are they bored and seeking stimulation? Once you've determined the cause, you can implement targeted solutions. Consider socializing your dog, providing mental stimulation, or rewarding calm behavior instead of barking.
Does your dog pull on the leash, turning your pleasant walks into a tug-of-war? This behavior can be caused by excitement, lack of training, or a desire to explore. To teach your dog to walk politely on a leash, start by addressing their excitement. Keep them on a shorter leash and reward them for walking by your side. Consistency is key, so practice in low-distraction environments before progressing to more challenging ones. With patience and persistence, your dog will soon become a leash-walking pro.
Chewing is a common issue, particularly for puppies or dogs with excessive energy. It's important to provide appropriate outlets for their chewing needs, such as chew toys or bones. If your dog is chewing on inappropriate items, redirect their attention to a chew toy and praise them when they engage with it. Keep valuable or dangerous items out of their reach to prevent destructive chewing. Remember, patience and consistency are essential during this training process.
Jumping up on people may seem cute when your dog is a small puppy, but it can quickly become a problem as they grow older. Dogs jump up to greet and seek attention, but it's essential to teach them proper manners. Consistency is crucial in curbing this behavior. Redirect their attention by asking for a sit or a down command and reward them when they comply. Additionally, teach guests to only give attention when your dog is in a calm, seated position. With practice, your dog will learn that jumping up is not acceptable behavior.
Aggression is a serious issue that often stems from fear, anxiety, or a desire to protect their territory. If your dog exhibits aggressive behavior, it's important to consult with a professional dog trainer or behaviorist. They can help you identify the triggers and develop a tailored training plan to address the aggression. Never attempt to handle aggressive behavior on your own, as it can be dangerous. With the right guidance and support, you can help your dog overcome their aggression and live a happier, more balanced life.
Section 4 - Building a Strong Bond through Training
Training is not just about teaching your dog commands; it's about building a strong emotional bond. Dogs are social animals that thrive on companionship and love. By incorporating training into your daily routine, you strengthen your bond and create a deeper connection with your furry friend. In this section, we will explore how training can serve as a foundation for a strong relationship.
Training sessions provide an opportunity for quality one-on-one time with your dog. Instead of viewing it as a chore, embrace it as a bonding experience. Focus on the joy and fulfillment you both feel when you accomplish a training goal together. This positive energy becomes embedded in your bond, making it stronger with each training session. Remember, it's not just about the end result; it's about the journey you take together.
A well-trained dog is a confident dog. The more skills your dog learns, the more confident they become in various situations. This newfound confidence extends beyond training sessions and into everyday life. A confident dog is less likely to be anxious or fearful and is better equipped to navigate new environments or social encounters. By building their confidence through training, you empower them to live life to the fullest.
Training is an ongoing process that should continue throughout your dog's life. Regularly introducing new challenges and reinforcing existing commands keeps their minds sharp and their skills polished. It's a lifelong commitment that allows you and your dog to grow together. As your bond strengthens, you'll discover the joy of having a well-trained dog who understands and respects your expectations.
In addition to training, incorporating playtime and physical affection into your daily routine strengthens the bond with your dog. Engage in interactive games, go for walks together, or simply spend quality time cuddling and petting. These moments of connection reinforce trust and love between you and your furry companion. A strong bond built on trust and love is the foundation for a happy and fulfilling relationship.
Remember, effective training is rooted in understanding canine behavior. By acknowledging their emotions, instincts, and individual personalities, you can tailor your training methods to suit their needs. With patience, positivity, and a proactive approach, you'll be well on your way to unlocking your dog's true potential. Training is not just about obedience; it's about building a deep connection and creating a harmonious partnership. So, embrace the journey and embark on this fulfilling adventure with your loyal canine friend by your side.
Section 5 - Enriching Your Dog's Life through Training
Did you know that training can provide mental and emotional enrichment for your furry friend? Beyond obedience, it offers numerous benefits that enhance their overall well-being. In this section, we will explore how training can enrich your dog's life, encouraging them to thrive and experience a world of possibilities.
Training engages your dog's mind, providing mental stimulation that keeps them sharp and focused. By challenging them with new commands or tricks, you awaken their curiosity and desire to learn. Mental exercise is just as important as physical exercise for dogs, as it prevents boredom and related behavioral issues. Take your training sessions to the next level by introducing advanced commands or puzzle-solving activities. A mentally stimulated dog is a happy dog.
Training allows your dog to develop new skills and abilities. From basic obedience to specialized tasks, such as search and rescue or therapy work, the possibilities are endless. By identifying your dog's natural talents and interests, you can provide them with opportunities to excel and shine. Not only does this boost their confidence, but it also deepens the bond between you as you embark on shared adventures and challenges.
The training process itself fosters resilience and perseverance in your dog. Every command or task requires effort and practice. As they overcome obstacles and master new skills, they become more resilient in the face of challenges. This resilience extends beyond training and prepares them to adapt to various situations they may encounter in life. By nurturing this resilience through training, you equip your dog with the tools to navigate the world with confidence.

Setting the Stage: Pet-Friendly Living Spaces
1. Designing with Pets in Mind When it comes to creating a pet-friendly living space, design plays a crucial role. Opt for pet-friendly materials that are durable and easy to clean, such as stain-resistant fabrics and pet-friendly flooring options like hardwood or tile. Ensure that your furniture and decor choices are pet-safe, avoiding delicate items that can be easily knocked over or chewed on. 2. Creating Safe Zones Just like humans, pets need their own space to retreat to when they want some peace and quiet. Designate a specific area in your home as your pet's safe zone, complete with a cozy bed, toys, and their favorite blanket. This will provide them with a sense of security and comfort, especially during times of stress or when they need a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Nutrition and Health: Nurturing Your Pet's Well-being
1. A Balanced Diet for Optimal Health Proper nutrition is essential for your pet's overall well-being. Consult your veterinarian to determine the ideal diet for your furry friend based on their breed, age, and specific dietary requirements. Invest in high-quality pet food that is rich in essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. Remember to provide fresh water at all times and avoid feeding them from the table, as certain human foods can be harmful to pets. 2. Regular Exercise for a Happy Pet Exercise is crucial for maintaining your pet's physical and mental health. Create a regular exercise routine tailored to your pet's needs, whether it's daily walks, interactive play sessions, or agility training. Not only will this keep them physically fit, but it will also help alleviate boredom and prevent destructive behaviors caused by pent-up energy.
Safety First: Pet-Proofing Your Home
1. Identify Potential Hazards To ensure the safety of your pet, it's essential to identify and eliminate potential hazards within your home. Secure electrical cords, keep toxic substances out of reach, and install childproof latches on cabinets containing cleaning products or medications. Regularly inspect your home for small objects that could be swallowed, as well as plants that may be toxic to pets. 2. Microchipping and Identification Accidents happen, and pets can sometimes wander off. Protect your furry friend by ensuring they have proper identification. Microchipping is a reliable and permanent form of identification that can greatly increase the chances of a lost pet being reunited with their owner. Additionally, make sure your pet wears a collar with an ID tag that includes your contact information.
Socialization and Enrichment: Building Strong Bonds
1. Positive Reinforcement Training Training your pet using positive reinforcement techniques is not only effective but also helps strengthen the bond between you and your furry companion. Reward-based training methods, such as clicker training or treats, encourage good behavior and build trust. Be patient, consistent, and always use positive reinforcement to motivate and guide your pet. 2. Interactive Play and Mental Stimulation Pets thrive on mental stimulation and playtime. Engage in interactive play sessions with toys that challenge their problem-solving abilities, such as treat puzzles or interactive feeders. This not only keeps them entertained but also prevents boredom and destructive behavior. Remember to rotate their toys regularly to keep things fresh and exciting.

10 Best Toys For Your Cat's Mental and Physical Wellness
New Post has been published on https://petnews2day.com/?p=49867
10 Best Toys For Your Cat's Mental and Physical Wellness
Cats have a reputation for being lazy, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Like all animals, they need some kind of motivation and stimulation to stay active, yet their humans often provide very little for them to do or be excited about, especially if they’re indoor cats. That’s where toys come in! Here are 10 toys that will keep your cat’s mind sharp and their body fit.
1. Petstages Tower of Tracks
Source: Petstages Tower of Tracks/Amazon
This durable toy with a non-slip base will mentally and physically engage your cat. The tower has 3 different levels of tracks, 6 brightly colored balls for them to swipe and chase, and a safety bar covering the top hole so your cat won’t get stuck. This popular product works great for one or multiple cats. Petstages Tower of Tracks costs $14.49 on Amazon.
One Amazon reviewer says, “We got this for her our 9-week-old kitten. She is good at chasing and playing but when she doesn’t want to chase but she needs to be busy, we pull this out and she loves to play with it. But I only pull it out every once in a while so that she doesn’t get bored with it. But it is a great toy! Definitely recommend it for kittens and it’s a good value for the money. The balls are only colored ping pong balls though so not super sturdy but they seem to work fine and roll fine for now.”
2. Cat Amazing Interactive Treat Maze & Puzzle Feeder
Source: Cat Amazing Interactive Treat Maze & Puzzle Feeder/Amazon
This award-winning toy is lightweight and will slide on floors, which will enhance the difficulty level of finding food and give your cat more exercise. The box contains inner chambers that will challenge your cat to retrieve treats and provides 3 different levels of difficulty, plus a bonus level you can unlock with the instructions. This product is also recommended by veterinarians, made with 30 percent recycled cardboard and printed with metal-free inks. Cat Amazing Interactive Treat Maze & Puzzle Feeder costs $15.92 on Amazon.
Rebecca Gallant says, “This is my second time purchasing the Catamazing box. It keeps my indoor kitties from gobbling up their treats too fast and gives them the hunting enrichment they need. Since it is made of cardboard, my new kittens like to bite and rip off pieces of the box (or any box for that matter), so I had to give the durability 3 stars, but everything else is 5 stars across the board. Will definitely purchase again once they’ve destroyed this box. lol!”

3. Rainbow Cat Charmer
Source: Rainbow Cat Charmer/Amazon
This durable, classic toy will give your cat great aerobic exercise and help enhance their agility and mental focus. It’s also made in the USA and crafted with non-toxic materials. You may want to consider putting this away when you’re not using it, as there have been some rare reports of cats ripping off pieces of fabric and choking on them. Rainbow Cat Charmer costs $6.49 on Amazon.
Jackie says, “My cat absolutely loves this. It’s made out of soft, lightweight felt material, so it really flies around when you wave it and he likes that much more than the heavier wand toys you basically just drag on the floor. As some other reviewers mentioned, because it’s a soft felt material, cats can (and probably will) chew parts off and may swallow them if left unsupervised. It’s probably a good idea to supervise while they play and put it away and out of reach after. We had another similar toy and this is a replacement because my cat ate part of it. This one goes safely in a drawer when not in use.”
4. Yeowww! Catnip Toy
Source: Yeowww! Catnip Toy/Amazon
This colorful toy has a natural cotton twill exterior and is stuffed with organic catnip. It’s also highly rated on Amazon, made in the USA, contains no fillers, and is colored with vegetable and soy-based ingredients. Yeowww! Catnip Toy costs $6.99 on Amazon.
Kim says, “I purchased my first YEOWWW! catnip toy for an elderly cat at the rescue I worked with because he was so depressed. ‘Archie’ loved it so much that when he was adopted I sent it with him and let his new mom know what to get him! Since then I have purchased many of these brand toys because they are well-loved. They are also extremely durable. I like the rainbow shape because they can ‘rabbit kick’ it while enjoying it! Great brand, great toy, would purchase from this seller again!”
5. PetFusion Ultimate Cat Scratcher Lounge
Source: PetFusion Ultimate Cat Scratcher Lounge/Amazon
This award-winning toy is made from recycled corrugated cardboard and features a modern design that will look great in your home. It’s durable and can be flipped over to make it last even longer. The scratching surface allows cats to relieve stress and exercise, and it keeps their nails healthy. Plus, it gives them something else to scratch besides the couch! PetFusion Ultimate Cat Scratcher Lounge costs $49.95.
Bonnie S. says, “There is absolutely nothing I dislike about this product and neither does my cat. She is on it quite a bit and all her scratching needs are satisfied. It is stylish, so very well made and well worth the money. My cat not only uses it for scratching needs but sleeps on it and keeps all her little fabric mice on it. This is the best product I have bought for my cat. I anticipate it will last one year as you can flip it over and use the bottom. Not a bad price for saving the furniture.”
6. YVE LIFE Motion Activated Cat Laser Toy
Source: YVE LIFE Motion Activated Cat Laser Toy/Amazon
This motion-activated laser toy turns on when it detects movement and then operates for 15 minutes before turning itself off again. It can be activated once per hour, has two different speed modes, is noise-free, and rotates in a circular pattern up and down. The USB battery takes 2.5 hours to charge and lasts for 3 days. YVE LIFE Motion Activated Cat Laser Toy costs $22.90 on Amazon.
Danielle says, “My kitten LOVES her laser pointers, but was starting to get a little obsessed. If she heard me grabbing it, she was UP and ready to pounce. I love that this pointer has a slow and fast setting, and it just goes on randomly. Sometimes the cats will just watch it, tuckered out from their last chase. Sometimes they are both up the second it turns on. A few reviewers were mad about the laser climbing the wall, probably they should be more mad that they didn’t look at the super basic directions. You just have to adjust where the laser goes, and I started it super low and then adjusted from there. It’s great, it’s quiet, and my cats (and dog) LOVE it!”
7. Trixie Cat Activity Feeder
Source: Trixie Cat Activity Feeder/Amazon
This interactive cat feeder will force your cat to think and use various strategies to remove their treats from the various compartments. It includes 4 different games, a non-slip bottom, and an instructional booklet. It’s also dishwasher safe. Trixie Cat Activity Feeder costs $32.92 on Amazon.
One Amazon reviewer says, “Great cat activity board! My cat is very food motivated and a beggar. He was immediately interested when I put food down. Took him at least 3 separate times of filling to fully get the concept and how to get the treats but now he’s a pro! He cleans the board every time! Minus the fish bowl part, we haven’t gotten that yet. It’s fun to watch his brain work at getting those treats. Definitely recommend this!”
8. LUCKITTY Geometric Cat Tunnel with Plush Inside
Source: LUCKITTY Geometric Cat Tunnel with Plush Inside/Amazon
This 47-inch collapsible tunnel has a soft flannel interior and a tough waterproof exterior. It includes two vents in the middle, a dangling ball toy, steel springs that allow it to pop out easily, and linking buttons to connect more tunnels. LUCKITTY Geometric Cat Tunnel with Plush Inside costs $21.99.
Rosemary Taylor says, “This tunnel is high quality, long and it is easily stored in seconds. My cats love the three escape ports on top. They ambush each other and have plenty of room to escape. It has sturdy buttons on it to keep it closed. The price was very reasonable, I was impressed and will buy another one.”
9. Cheerble Interactive Cat Ball Toy
Source: Cheerble Interactive Cat Ball Toy/Amazon
This automatic moving ball has 3 different modes of operation, an obstacle avoidance sensor, LED lights, a soft surface, and is a small enough size for cats. The ball operates for 10 minutes and is then inactive for 30 minutes. The battery charges in an hour and allows for 4 hours of playtime. Cheerble Interactive Cat Ball Toy costs $34.99 on Amazon.
Brittany B. says, “My cat has spent the last 40 minutes excitedly going after it in gentle mode (rolling). It’s very quiet, especially compared to other robotic cat toys which is fantastic, and within seconds it gets out of most places it was stuck in. I haven’t had to get up as much as any other toy to get it unstuck, which is nice! It’s also very easy to get hair off of it!”
10. SPOT Sponge Soccer Balls
Source: SPOT Sponge Soccer Balls/Amazon
These non-toxic miniature soccer balls are soft and durable. They’re about the size of a golf ball and are perfect for a game of fetch or for your cat to swat around. SPOT Sponge Soccer Balls cost $5.49 on Amazon.
Beth Wade says, “I think I have purchased at least 12 of these packages of 4. My cat hides them all over the house, and he hides them very well. He loves them, though, and so I just keep buying them if I can’t find them. He plays fetch with me with them. They are sturdy, and they hold up well! Even the older ones that I have found, are still in pretty good condition despite little teeth marks on them. They really are his favorite toys and I am so happy he enjoys them. Highly recommended!”

Beginner’s housing for a pet pigeon
We can go into the complexities involved in housing multiple pigeons at a later time.
Right now, we’re going to focus primarily on setting up for a single bird who is intended to be a companion animal.
The biggest problem you are going to run into is that the housing commercially available for birds is designed either to display a finch or a parrot.
Tumblr media
Finch cages make excellent hospital cages for pigeons, but that is their only useful application.
A Hospital cage needs to be small to discourage the bird from moving around too much and doing anything other than eating and drinking, so that their recovery, be that from disease or injury, can progress with as few delays as possible.
A healthy bird cannot tolerate this degree of confinement for long.
Parrot cages are huge and expensive, but too narrow for a pigeon to be physically able to use.
The bare minimum requirements for any cage a pigeon will be housed in for more than an hour a day is that it be two inches wider than the full wingspan of the bird at the narrowest point, to allow their wings at least an inch of clearance on either side.
They are cliff nesters that don’t roost on branches. Round perches hurt their feet, so they need either flat platforms or square perches.
Pigeons cannot climb the way parrots can. They can only walk or fly, and they cannot comfortably fly if their wings will clip into things like hanging toys or ramps.
So they tend to prefer their enclosure be as uncluttered as possible.
Socialization is best done outside the enclosure, so that’s where most of the toys should be.
Tumblr media
Dog kennels set up like this one above are kinder to both the pigeons and the wallets of their care taker than pretty much any indoor bird cage available.
A Labrador sized (usually marketed as a “Large”) kennel will fit bird about homer sized and smaller.
Larger breeds or breeds with longer flight and tail feathers will need a larger size as a base line.
These are very simple to modify.
The nest box is a bunny/ferret corner litter box, about $8-10 at most pet shops. Easy to clean and comfortable.
The perch is a garden stake cut to length, about $5 from the garden center at Walmart or a hardware store like Lowes or home Depot.
Honestly, if I had this to do over, the birds would get a wider, shallower food dish.
Pigeons are ground foragers. It’s easier for them to eat comfortably from a shallow dish than a deep one.
The water dish can be as deep as the pigeon can reach the bottom of.
Tumblr media
This is the upper level of a ferret nation Double modified for my first breeding pair of Lucerne waaaay back before my loft was built, when I had a grand total of four breeding pair of pigeons and 16 pairs of Ringneck doves.
This one also has a garden steak cut to fit as a perch.
Their nest box is a large dog bowl full of timothy hay.
Notice that this enclosure has a single hanging bell toy exactly at standing head height for the birds, well out of the way of their wings.
This probably looks unbearably spartan, especially if you come form a parrot back ground.
Remember that pigeons cannot climb and will not fly in a space where their wings may bump into clutter.
The cage for an indoor pet pigeon should serve the same function as the kennel does for an indoor dog:
That is NOT where the dog lives!
At most, it’s where they sleep at night, and where a puppy stays when they can’t be supervised until they’ve learned the house rules.
Pigeons are absolutely smart enough to learn house rules just like a dog or cat.
And pet pigeons are happiest when they have the freedom of motion to exercise, play, and interact with their human flock mates at will.
While they can free fly an entire house, a single bedroom is enough space for most breeds to move around happily.
Pigeon proofing is pretty simple.
They aren’t capable of chewing like parrots, so no need to worry about your electrical chords being damaged and your bird giving them self a nasty shock.
They can’t damage wood or drywall or fabric by chewing.
Pigeons don’t eat plants, but do like the feel of ripping them and will use strips of leaves as nest bedding, so house plants may need to be protected by glass covers.
Things displayed on shelves in the room or rooms the pigeon will have access to need to be heavy enough or well enough wedged in that the bird can’t pull them down if they land awkwardly on them or push them off if they bump into or try to squeeze past them.
Papers need to be stored where they won’t be scattered by the wind that their powerful wings kick up in flight.
Any crevices too high or awkward for you to easily clean need to be blocked some how.
Poop is simple.
The poop of a well fed, healthy pigeon with a good diet should be round and solid enough that it can be easily picked up with a square of toilet paper or a tissue when wet or vacuumed up when dry.
Once you know your bird’s favorite perches, you can make clean up even easier on yourself by laying down puppy pads under them that you can just change out as often as needed.
Once a pigeon has mastered the house rules, you can do away with the cage entirely.

This is the feeding station we set up for Ankhou and Bird-bird.
On the little feed tray for cats were the feeder and waterer with oystershell offered free choice from a dish between them.
Pigeons are one of the very few animals that recognize their reflection in the mirror as a a reflected view of themselves, instead of another bird.
Most like to practice dancing, strutting, their sweeping charge, and bow-cooing in front of mirrors, so those are excellent enrichment for them.
Being cliff nesters, bricks are simply the most comfortable thing for a pigeon to stand on.
Strutting back and forth on the rough surface in front of a mirror will help them keep their claws blunted.
The bricks are holding down a crinkle sack for cats, laid out flat.
Pigeons love noise stims. Particularly crinkly, jingly, or chiming.
The noise it made made dancing in front of the mirror extra fun on the crinkle mat.
The dead keyboard serves a similar function.

This beans box from Walmart full of straw served as Bird-Bird’s nest box.
She laid eggs fairly regularly, and slept in there most of the time.

Ankhou was a man of simple tastes.
This baby doll blanket on the nightstand at my bedside was where he slept at night.
Social bird was social and wanted to be as close as possible to us at all times and involved somehow in everything we did.
Pigeons like to take baths, and our free flying pet liked to be offered the opportunity to take one when we showered, but did not like to actually be in the shower with us.
So we got him a little pyrex casserole dish about as long as he was that stayed on the side of the bathtub and made a habit of filling it for him before we got into the shower.
Anhkou didn’t care much for forage pans or puzzle toys, but many pigeons do and they are very simple to make.
A pan or tray with a few fists full of straw, paper strips, sand, or a mix of all three with a high value treat like Safflower seeds sprinkled in to find mimics the way rock doves would forage for seed in the wild.
Puzzle feeders for pigeons are as simple to make as crumpling a sheet of paper with a few high value seeds inside.
Pigeons love crinkly sounds and tugging on the crumpled paper or blowing it around by flapping at it will reward them with a few spilled seeds and a fun noise.
The little wicker balls for kitties with a jingle bell inside complete the holy trinity of stick-texture, shiny, and jingly, and many pigeons love to kick, peck, and toss them.
They like to pick up and shake and toss bread ties with a small jingle bell fastened to the end.
Bird-Bird’s favorite toy was the bell intended to go on a kittens collar.
She liked to strut around with it holding it by the loop by which it was supposed to fasten and very softly jingling it.
Q-tips with the cotton tips removed and toothpicks with blunted or clipped ends are basically pigeon Legos.

Miniature wind chimes like this little angel and her harp are fun auditory stims too.

If you can swing it (ha!), pigeons enjoy swings, as long as the perch is flat.
Experiment with your birds and see what kind of enrichment they enjoy. ^v^
