[ID: a comic featuring the cast of the owl house, split into two images. The first image shows King holding a pair of uno cards, looking up to the left- towards Luz, who we see in a cut-in-half close up panel of her face, holding three cards in a dramatic fashion. Her face is in shadow and sparkles appear around her eyes. Paralleling her in the other corner is a panel of hunter, holding yellow cards and sweating nervously.
The next image is two rectangular panels of hunter and Luz sitting across from each other with king in the middle, all three of them playing cards. In the background is Gus, Willow and Amity (who is saying "go Luz!"). The first panel is silent, until in the second panel, Luz says "draw 5" with a smug expression. Hunter stands up angrily, his cards flying in the air, and yells "IT IS NOT LEGAL TO DO THAT FOUR TIMES IN A ROW, HUMAN!". king says "haha, yes it is! Loser boy has lost again!" Gus summons a puff of illusion smoke with a scoreboard on it reading "L: 12, H: 0". Amity is cheering and willow summons the word, "R.I.P (again)" in vines and flowers next to hunter. The background is colored with peaches and oranges. End ID]
Frantically ignoring the implications of todays ep. Incredibly funny to me how these bitches ended up actually being siblings

Its not an actual complaint or criticism but man.
I do wish that we had Mattholomule as a part of the Hexsquad.
If only for the comedic potential since he's a bit more cynical than the rest, maybe besides Hunter (who I guess is now technically a part of the gang??? I gues lmao).
It'd also be nice for him to hang out with people he could bond with, since they've all been seen as outcasts or weirdos. Given his sorta backstory that was hinted in TTLGR. Not to mention his design is just really fun.
Plus, ya know, Gus and Matty are just such an incredible duo together always.

drops an AU Welcome to my fun torture games The Snake House AU- An AU where the Hexsquad and Hagsquad are switched with some other shennigans. Chart under the cut.

*Hunter is still the grimwalker of Caleb, but he's older and Belos had to make sure it didn't get suspicious so he hired Darius to be the Golden Guard. *Luz isn't cursed, she's just a powerless witch who uses glyphs.

I don’t have the brain cells to make a fic with this but while riding the subway this weekend I was thinking about the Hexsquad using the bus alot in the human realm and like okay
I imagine that whenever Hunter is with them he always makes sure his friends have a seat first. The bus fills quickly so he always volunteers to stand, it’s just the public servant in him. If they all have to stand, he stands between them and the strangers to make sure no one messes with them. No one does, everyone is minding their own business but he’s always in guard mode he just can’t help it.
So one day the Emerald trio is coming home from getting some things for dinner and they are just exhausted and the bag is heavy and the bus is busy. There are two seats left and Hunter of course insists that Willow and Gus sit and he’ll hold the railing and the groceries but the bag is so heavy, they’ve all been taking turns carrying it and they need a break. So Willow says no, Gus should sit and put the bag next to him so they won’t have to put it on the gross ground and she and Hunter will stand.
Hunter is fine with this, but soon they realize the only things to hold onto without crowding people are the ropes and Willow is just a smidge too short to hold onto it comfortably without like hanging from it. So Hunter holds onto the rope and Willow holds onto his bicep, like her own makeshift rope. It’s awkward at first, Hunter’s mind goes totally blank at how close this makes them and Willow’s preoccupied with the muscle hiding beneath his sweatshirt. They’re both so lost in thought that they nearly miss their stop and Gus has to snap them both back to reality.
This soon becomes routine. They don’t questions it; it’s just easier, right? It’s polite to leave seats open to other passengers, right? It’s normal to ride the bus just to get off at the next stop, right? Sometimes the bus stops suddenly and Willow will crash into Hunter’s chest and his free hand with instinctively dart to her waist to steady her because of course he doesn’t want her to fall! And maybe they don’t leave the position right away because hey, the bus might stop suddenly again, right?
One day after such an occurrence, an older lady leans over to say what a cute couple they make, how sweet it is to see them care so much for one other. Hunter freezes, but Willow just blushes and says thank you. It would be rude to correct her, Hunter thinks. And besides, maybe she meant a couple of friends. Friends care about each other and look out for each other on the bus, right? Friends stand this close when there’s plenty of room sometimes, right?
Then one day, the whole Hexsquad is heading out to do something fun after a long week of portal attempts and research and they get on the bus. There are three free seats at the back next to a man using the seat beside him to keep his bag. This is fine because of course Hunter stands and Willow goes to stand with him. The man sees this and insists they take his seat so they can sit with their friends. They politely decline at first, both secretly preferring their routine but he insists saying he feels rude taking up two seats when they clearly came as a group and he’s getting off soon anyway. They begrudgingly take the seats, knowing like this there’s no need to touch. They could, but it would harder to play off as a safety precaution.
When they stood together, they could look out the window and marvel at things together side by side. They’d guess things about the buildings and other vehicles but now it’s hard to renter the bubble. Willow would often make a fuss of adjusting his hat to make sure his ears were covered but now facing forward made her less bold for some reason. She wished she could find a way to crash into him but buses didn’t stop sideways as far as she knew.
Gus notices the pair seem less enthusiastic and instantly realizes they are such losers. He spreads out as much as he can, moving everyone’s backpacks and bags to the sides and Luz and Amity need little instruction to follow suit. Suddenly, the row of seats is very cramped. There’s still no reason to get up but the gang is shoulder to shoulder.
“Oh man, it sure is cramped back here,” lies Gus. “Hunter, can you put your arm around Willow to try and make some room so we’re not so squished?”
Hunter happily obliges soon enough Willow leans into the touch, her head naturally resting on his shoulder as they all plan their day. She says nothing of how roomy the seats seem to get after that despite no other changes being made, but she doesn’t really care anyway. Hunter’s arm hovers over her shoulders, restring against the back of the seats but she certain that soon enough it will know it’s okay to fall and bring her closer.

I’ve been busily and excitedly working on this, so if you’re an Owl House fan and you like/love Willow, then listen up!! I have ALSO gotten help from @msbadatnamingthings
Tumblr media
[ID: a digital document that is green and has sparkles and plants all over it. the header says “Willow Park Appreciation Week” and the sub-header says “Takes Place @ May 22 through May 26!!” Under this, there are 5 prompts that say “May 22/Day 1: Palismen bonding OR crossover.” “May 23/Day 2: Childhood OR father/daughter bonding. “May 24/Day 3: Flyer Derby OR favorite on-screen outfit.” “May 25/Day 4: Favorite on-screen moment OR any type of AU (alternate universe) and lastly “May 26/Day 5: character development/growth OR friendship(s).” All of the words typed in are in white font, and to the right, there is a picture of Willow from The Owl House. She has her season 3 hair style and Halloween costume from season 3, and she is slightly blushing with a shocked face expression. END ID]
This is LOOSELY inspired off of that one Gus Week that was hosted last year, and it was super fun, so I went, why not make a week for a core Hexsquad member??  You can post/do fanart, BUT you can ALSO do short drabbles/fanfiction, collages or even a video edit if that’s what you prefer, all types of works are valid!!
AND you can also post your entries on other social media, like Twitter or Instagram (if you wanna find me then I’m on Tumblr) AS LONG as you give credits as to who is running this week OR to tag it as #willow week 2023
ONE LAST THING (THIS IS @ MY FANARTISTS WHO WANNA JOIN IN) if you draw Willow skinny, ESPECIALLY on purpose, I will ignore your entry/submission.
ALSO, HAVE FUN!!!

Hunter head canon #2
I feel like we need to remember that Hunter was treated like an adult and was around adults his whole life. Not just any adults but adults in the emperors coven and coven heads themselves. Who are shown to be, to put it nicely, catty. In result, Hunter himself can be very catty even if he doesn’t mean to be. The lack of knowledge to certain social cues and his overall sass can make him seem pretty mean even if he doesn’t mean to be.
I also imagine him being a young emperor coven head (for goodness sake he’s 16 and already the golden guard when we meet him) he was frequently the butt of the joke among other coven heads. So of course he needed to be just as harsh back to not let himself put down like that.
Like the hexsquad will be messing with each other for fun as friends do and he will just insult them and their whole existence and when the others tell him like bro that enough he’s like “oh no, did I do something wrong. Im sorry :(“ and the other have show him a difference between a joke and insult and the limits to a joke. He quickly learns and is understanding of course cause he does genuinely love his friends.
However with that being said, when he does start attending Hexside like he said he was he runs into some issues. For starters, I imagine him being ex golden guard and being a bit different (obvious scarring, weird personality, etc) many aren’t very kind to him. But what makes him hard to bully is that he can easily rebuttal back and do it meaner. He was surrounded by rude, powerful adults, he can handle some measly rude teens easily. Of course he still does get emotionally effected, he’s not a robot obviously. But he can defend himself and has others to help him
I also imagine he knows how to “professionally” insult people. Making his insults sound polite or be very passive aggressive. Like. “Just a friendly reminder…” or “we can’t all have winning ideas, we need people like you to help fill the roster” or “There’s no reason to be so humble, it’s quite indifferent” and other things.
Idk theses are just my thoughts as I feel alot of people make him seem idk… weaker I guess or a ‘pure soft boy’. He can be both soft n sweet but still a sassy lil shit. Their must be balance people

Willow matters. She matters! I love her so much, because she’s the glue that holds all of the hexsquad together. She is the one shared connection! She is everyone's first friend! She’s so hard on herself but in the end she will always matter to them!
Willow is Luz’s first friend. They hit it off as soon as they met in that clearing, and Willow was Luz’s contact with all the other witches her age—especially Gus and Amity! Not only that, Willow turned the little seed in Luz’s pocket into a huge, beautiful plant. She showed Luz how magic was inside of nature in the Boiling Isles, setting her on the path to discover glyphs!
Willow was Amity’s first friend. They were best friends. Breaking up hurts Amity, and it hurts Willow. Amity changes her ways because she never wanted to be a bully in the first place. She always just wanted to be Willow’s friend. And, years after their friendship ends, Willow is Amity’s link to Luz. Luz, who helps Amity change and befriend Willow again.
Willow was Gus’ first friend. When they first met, Gus thought people only liked him for his skill in illusions. But Willow was there when he had the least control of his magic, and she kept being there. She showed Gus he mattered to someone. She gave him his confidence.
Willow was Hunter’s first friend. Before her, he had Belos abusing him, Eda and King making fun of him, none of the coven heads respecting him, Amity fighting against him. Even his team-up with Luz was reluctant. But Willow wanted him from the start. She saw a star flyer, she trusted him, she depended on him. She showed Hunter that he could find a place outside the Emperor’s coven!
Willow feels like she has to be strong to mean something. But she means so much and it’s never because she’s strong. She riles up the crowd at Eda’s petrification with just her words. She brings together the entire Hexsquad because she’s a good, kind person. Every one of them cares deeply about her. If she lost her magic tomorrow, lost all her muscle, became not-even-half-a-witch Willow, she would be just as important to every single one of them!
It’s the beauty and tragedy of her character: Willow doesn’t see how she matters.
She thinks she has to do something to have worth to her friends. Has to be strong and wise, not show weakness, be the perfect team captain. But that’s not what made her friends love her. They love her because she was the first person to love THEM for who THEY are!
One of the central themes of this show is that “us weirdos have to stick together.” And Willow? She’s the original weirdo. She brings all the kids together.
No, Willow may not see it herself yet, but oh… Willow matters.

Unfortunately due to TOH being cut short by Disney a lot of character arcs and more storyline could not be fully fleshed out and finished as Dana had to wrap up everybody’s story in just a few episodes
I'm fully aware that Disney's intervention is responsible for a lot of the plotlines getting suffocated. Which is why I don't think it's fair to go harassing crew members with "why didn't THIS happen??" and all that, because nobody really knows what they endured working on those final episodes and how much they had to cut and rewrite. But from things Dana has said, it was likely a very stressful and exhausting experience. So I don't like to make assumptions about the crew being incompetent. Nobody knows how the season WOULD have turned out if they had been granted full creative freedom and breathing room to develop it to their hearts content.
However, me not directing personal ire towards the crew doesn't mean that I think that the show is immune to criticism. Its flawed. It might not be entirely the crew's fault but that doesn't mean we can't talk about how it's flawed. If anything, I think acknowledging and dissecting its weaknesses is a good learning opportunity for what we should consider when creating our own stories.
Season 3 is a bit of a mess. There's good stuff. There's some less than good stuff. I think ultimately, as a story about Luz, King and Eda, it knocks it out of the park. When they were left with no other option, they decided to prioritize the writing of their three protagonists and I think that was the correct choice.
But I've been thinking about the three specials and how they stand on their own, quality wise, and honestly, there's valid criticism to be said that is completely unrelated to the shortening.
Bear in mind that the crew has known since Follies that the show was getting cut short and they needed to start wrapping up loose ends. So it's not like they started writing Thanks to Them believing it was the first of 20+ more episodes. They knew that they were going to be writing a 40 minute special. So the execution had to be tight, concise and satisfying, right?
Well...it was....weird. Definitely fun. Good for fan service. The main hook was the witch kids navigating the human world in their dorky witchy way. And initially, that was enough. But once the novelty of that wears off and we focus on the plot of the special, what do we have left?
Thanks to Them is very guilty of lore baiting. Dropping in stuff that they know damn well that they're never going to elaborate on, leaving the audience with a feeling of intrigue that is never going to be satiated.
I personally think that is just bad writing. They knew they didn't have a full season 3 and rather than rewrite the means of which the hexsquads finds answers, they still made the choice to drop in what are most likely vague ideas from the initial draft.
I think, if they had no intention of developing it in future specials, there was no point to that scene of Masha telling the Wittebane story. It was just...filler. To stretch out the running time. Which is....kind of precious. Only 40 minutes. If you're obsessive enough about lore, you already knew the story from the Hollow Mind paintings. That scene was for casual viewers. Which is useless, because there's no point in casual viewers learning about Evelyn and Caleb because it never went anywhere.
Also. I personally think that if there was any value to learning the Wittebane lore without making it plot relevant, it would be for the sake of character development. We wanted to know how the kids would react to this knowledge.
Well how did they react?
*Shrug* They seemed a little unnerved but they kinda forgot about it the second they got off the hayride.
So what was the point of all that? What was the point?
Is it because we wanted "Goodbye, Evelyn," to be more of gut punch?
Was it worth it? Was "Goodbye, Evelyn" worth it? We know fucking nothing about Evelyn.
I think the rebus was a stupid and lazy means for the kids to discover Titan's blood. You introduce this mysterious object that was hidden under the floorboards and then you just use it as a plot device.
When the kids uncover the rebus and find the secret code inside, the viewer is not thinking about how it can be used as a means to an end (finding blood) The viewer is thinking "what the fuck is that thing and how did it get there and how did Flapjack know it was there?"
Questions that will not be answered <333
ALL IM SAYING is that I'm sure the crew could have come up with another way for the kids to have a Titan's blood treasure hunt. Maybe they could have dug a little more into the history of Gravesfield and follow leads on weird things happening on this one spot in the graveyard (which turns out to be because there's magical energy there, revealed when Luz realizes she can use glyphs)
I just think that if you're gonna leave the mystery box a mystery, you shouldn't have included it.
And I know. Its subtle storytelling. There's elements of what could have been a far more complex story and they're leaving hints of it here and there.
Well the thing about that is I think the hints are very unsatisfying and weaken the episode's plot significantly.
Also I don't think they should get to just pick and choose what parts of the lore are subtle and what parts are ham-fisted.
YES we are going to be reminded like three times that Flapjack is being secretive and hiding things from Hunter.
NO we are never going to get a payoff for that because he gets shanked and dies first.
BUT!! BUT!! If you squint, its IMPLIED that Flapjack belonged to Evelyn and blah blah blah
You don't get to rub things in the audience face and then choose to be all subtle about it at the last minute. Pick one or the other.
Anyway....I think they could have written Thanks to Them as more of an intriguing and suspenseful horror mystery where they spend forty minutes gathering clues and everything finally clicks together at the very end. That's not what we got.
We got a very weak attempt on the Hexsquad's part to be little detectives, but like a minute of screen time was devoted to them dicking around in a library, a costume shop, and a zoo.
I don't think we can blame the shortening for this.

I had a dream last night where Raine was the Hexsquad's teacher (they were all humans) and Raine asked their students who their favorite Disney princesses were. And before Christmas break, they gave everyone a goody bag themed to that princess, with like, toys, stickers, and stuff. The class wasn't little kids they were still teenagers. Raine also gave one to some of the other teachers (the Hagsquad).
I was Luz in this dream and the girl behind me was making fun of the bags so I violently threw mine in her face, but that's not important. I had an Ariel goodie bag.

Watching and Dreaming was a fun finale with a lot of banger moments that made me whoop but looking back on it now I realise that it's actually saying very little thematically. TOH always built itself off of a fantasy subversion with the occasional horror elements, but it really got a lot of intrigue and character work in the middle with its mysteries and themes. Now I'm not saying it's wrong to enjoy WaD and I myself still look back on it fondly but we spent so long cleaning up the final battle that we didn't get to see any of the actual interesting character work.
Like, don't get me wrong, the characters all deserved the happy endings they got, but I'm upset that barely any of the character interactions that built this show got much focus. The Hexsquad and Camila were majorly sidelined, and I wish we could have spent more time with Eda, King, and Luz just talking and catching up :(
Not to mention, while I think the Collector is... decent, their redemption being so rushed (and retconning them knowing about death) means his character ends up representing very little to the overall themes, making him feel kind of pointless to the show overall.
Belos is probably one of the biggest examples of this emphasis on the grand show over the actual substance of the characters. Who once started off as a charismatic and charming villain who won people over through his words and had a whole complex backstory dedicated to him just became a literal big monster with nothing to say behind his roars.
Papa Titan as well, I truly love what we got to see with him and everything she said about the Collector gives us a great insight into her character, but I wish we could have just spent more time with him talking about seeing her son grow up and how his opinions on people like Belos and the Collector have changed over the years.
I get that the crew had limited time so there was very little they could do with so much to wrap up so this isn't exactly blaming them, but it's just expressing some grievances and wishes. I know it's a personal preference of mine that I prefer thematic conversations over big flashy fights, but I just kinda wanted to express this.
