was shauna good friend?

it’s complicated because with everyone else it’s easy to argue she is a good (even great) friend. she’s willing to die in a fire to save van, she helps tai (both young and old) without hesitation, she’s also kind to misty in the adult timeline even if the two of them aren’t that close.

but with jackie it’s debatable. the two of them have that relationship where you’ve known each other so long that its hard to visualise life without them. so in a way there’s not as much need to try in the relationship because it seems impossible not to always have. obviously sleeping with jeff is not a good friend thing to do, but there are other things.

like the whole university situation, from shauna’s perspective it feels like jackie was taking control of the situation and pushing her into this same routine by picking rutgers. but from jackie’s side, given how much she loves shauna, it would be surprising if she was unsupportive of shauna going to brown. if anything she would probably be proud of her for getting in. if shauna had told her in advance and given jackie time to get used to the idea their relationship may have also been healthier for it. and yes jackie could have asked but ultimately shauna did not tell her any of her plans and allowed jackie to continue on in the belief that everything was right as rain.

as far as we see shauna was the one hiding things from jackie. and jackie of course had her faults but also if someone slept with her boyfriend, and wrote possibly terrible things about in her diary, seemed to be replacing her at a time when they needed each more than ever, any reaction she had would be understandable.

yes there was probably a better way for them to talk about their issues but honestly they are teenagers and that can be difficult to do no matter what age.

so yes jackie could have handled things better (namely not exposing shauna’s pregnancy before she was ready) but a lot of their problems seem to rest with shauna’s inability to be open with jackie

what's happening with Petra in this?

Petra is a complicated figure in Lotus's life. She's their older sister, but she was the one who raised them. She'll represent everything they come from, the meaning of family and the truth of gods, what it's like to live in a changing world.

She'll be disdainful of the valley prides' unyielding attachment to their traditions. She teaches Lotus that change is natural and that no rules can truly define the world. She'll teach them that there are no pure goods or pure evils, ideals that lead them to challenge Goldspring and Asphodel on everything, always wanting to find that underlying thread.

And Petra will show them that to love is to teach, to know things about the world and then to share them is a gift. Knowledge is power, and power should be shared. She instills in them a burning curiosity about the world that becomes fundamental to how Lotus approaches pride customs.

I'm not so sure about her son. I think if anything, she would give him over to Lotus because of that same sense of wanting them to have family in the pride, but also giving them the gift that she was given herself: the opportunity to raise them and teach them and love them. I do know his name will be Coriander, though.

Actually it is astounding the about of leverage Wataru has on Eichi I think the amount of stuff he could use to guilt Eichi into doing something really speaks as a testament to how much he loves that guy.
