Me: I'm not going to finish Before Midnight tonight, it's too emotionally intense.
Me: let's watch some Doctor Who, Eleventh always helps me heal and recentre!
Also me: you know what, I've only watched The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe once, how about rewatching this one.
End results: full on sobbing in my knitting.
Two things:
Eleventh is GOOD with kids. Maybe the best of the New Who regens.
And also, the Doctor has mommy issues. No, I am not projecting on my most comfort character ever. It's right there in the text. Look at the people who consistently manage to scold him, make him step down or reconsider, or shame him into bettering himself, or having a nervous breakdown, who are they? Jackie. Francine. Madge. Grace. Amy (triple hat for Amy, best friend forever, mother-in-law, River's mother). Indirectly, both Bill's and Clara's mothers. Negative points for Donna's mother, tho - but that's because on the other end, the Doctor gets along well with fathers and/or grandfathers, so the influence of Wilfred negated the nagging of Sylvia. And obviously, their own mother figure, Tecteun.
Anyway. Either I watch Night Terrors, for another good parent/child therapy session, or I watch a lesser emotionally devastating one. Altough now that I think of it, a huge part of Eleventh's run was dedicated to complicated parent/child relationships... What's that about???

Doctor Who: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe
I rewatched this, the 2011 Christmas story, on 8 August 2023.
We begin in space with a giant space ship where the Doctor is running from explosions and fire. The Doctor jumps out of the space thing and dives towards Earth…
He crash-lands into a field. He’s wearing a space suit, but the helmet is on backwards. Madge finds him and helps him back to the TARDIS. A few years later and Madge’s husband is lost in a Lancaster bomber. She and her two kids go to a large house where the Doctor is acting as caretaker. He’s enthusiastic and has ‘repaired’ loads of things, making it a magical place for the two kids.
But then there’s a box, which Cyril sneaks into before he ought to, and he’s transported to a world of snow…
If 2010’s Christmas was Charles Dickens in space, this one is CS Lewis with aliens. Fair enough. It is Christmas, and it is a relief to not have the whole of the Earth in danger (as much as those Christmas specials were fun, too).
Weird coincidence: CS Lewis died the day before Dr Who was first broadcast.

Day in Fandom History: December 25 (Christmas)…
The Doctor helped out a woman and her two kids in War-Torn London when becoming their caretaker when a mysterious Christmas gift appeared out of the blue, taking them to a magical world. “The Doctor, The Widow, and The Wardrobe” premiered on this day, 11 Years Ago.
