Last couple Dreamsnaps The Fashion Week was "Dapper Delights" which made me think of Dapper Day. It said for early 1900s and that combined with Dapper made me want to either aim for the "1920s/1930s" (due to that being Early Disney) or "1950s" (due to that being when Disneyland opened). I picked the Minnie Mouse dress because it reminds me of dresses from the 50s and it was the obvious choice of the Wall-E clothes and the dress from the theme banner. Use the Filter because while the Black and White or Sepia toned filters would have worked better, its a Fashion challenge and I figured people would still want to see the colors of the clothes. While this was the photo I've done the most research and put thought into (Except for this last week "Fun in Fall" I tried and tested so many outfits and spots...my photo folder is growing by the day), its also the photo that has scored the worst...OH WELL, I STILL HAD FUN! The Decor Challenge was "Critter Love" so I showed off my little critter corner by my house. I spiffed it up to fit fall a little bit better (and because my favorite Critter is the Wind-Up Raccoon from last year's Halloween Star Path. His name is Gurgi and he's a menace).

I would like some new poses now though. I wanna sit on benches or on the picnic blankets in photos. I am tired of use the same "no pose" pose every fashion week...Let me interact with things in the photos. I got so spoiled with the photo mode in ACNH....

so i've just started messing around with a new drawing software and i doodled a little dapper to test it! i think both dapper and her dad have an eyeshine effect on them if you try to take a picture of them in the dark

this dapper design was inspired by @bigboobyhalo 's super cute drawing here --ever since I saw it back in May it's stuck as how i imagine this little critter to look

No reason for this image, just me enjoying Saitama's meaty thighs. That's all.

Story: Like putting lipstick on a hyena

We open with Tatsumaki taking a phone call. She's dismissive of the idea of shooting a commercial to promote the Hero Association to prospective heroes -- until she remembers Saitama talking about how he'd once been weak and agrees. Let it be noted that Tatsumaki doesn't do anything half-assed: she throws herself into the role of ambassador with such enthusiasm that she ends up trashing the studio.

She is less than impressed with what comes out of the session: a cutesy, saccharine call girl simpering in a commercial, about as true a reflection of Tatsumaki as lipstick and a pink bowtie on a spotted hyena. Fubuki, unfortunately, comes home [1] just as Tatsumaki gets hung up on. Oh, dear, there goes the roof. Looks like they'll be staying in hotels for a bit -- ar at Hero Association HQ -- while the damage is fixed.

I'd love to blame Amai Mask for producing the AI-edited monstrosity. But the true blame lies with McCoy. He orchestrated the campaign. The public lap it up, it conforming to an image that's palatable to see [I have A LOT to say about this but that's another post.]

Nastier-minded people would have asked, 'which organization', but so it goes when one has the benefit of the doubt

After the HA executives praise McCoy for his adroit management of the HA's image, they (especially a guy I'm calling Walrus 'stache) turn to the recruitment figures to find...

...ah, let me wind back a second. It's true that the Hero Association is always recruiting, but it's taken on additional urgency with Metal Knight having apparently thrown billions of Yen away on infrastructure and weaponry that don't work [2] and Tatsumaki being unmanageable. We return to the story...

...that...

...the ad campaign had made no difference. The Hero Association approval ratings were up, but recruitment was still on its downward slide.

What gave?

The answer comes from two other conversations happening contemporaneously. One is between a Hero Association scout and Axel, the leader of a vigilante group known as The Hunters, the other between another scout and a super-sumo champion named Raiden. In each case, the scout is sent off with a flea in their ear as the prospect in question has another engagement.

Yes, there's another hero organization in the wings, and it's hoovering up as much talent as it can find. It's even reaching out to current heroes.

We cut to a very dapper-looking Genos being asked by a very tired-looking Dr Kuseno what his intentions are, given this information and the former's feelings about the Hero Association. Genos starts to answer, but we'll have to wait for the answer as the scene switches to Saitama doing a spit-take as he sees the commercial.

Meta: Finally, some good fucking food

Everything can be faked (except truth)

Many people have already noted the jab at AI fakery inherent in 'Tatsumaki's ad,' so I won't belabour the point. I shall leave it to another post.

Alas, heroes don't grow on trees

The Hero Association's newfound desperation to find new heroes has been a long time coming. People who make good heroes are rare critters. There is not only the need for exceptional ability (even C-Class heroes are incredible), but there's also a need for willingness to serve as a hero, moral principles, and stability under very trying circumstances. Fooled by the previously buoyant numbers of applicants, leading to 55 Hero Tests being conducted as of the time Saitama and Genos applied, they've applied an 'easy-come, easy-goes' attitude to their recruits. When they should instead have recognised them as rare talent to be nurtured, even the lower-class heroes. Looks like there have been seven more Hero Tests since those two joined, and the news has not been good.

At no point does the HA appear to have had more than 600 heroes on the books: retention seems to have been a big problem. It fits in well with the executive Gobrich's frustration with the situation that support for heroes is too top-down and hasn't listened to their actual needs and concerns. Bushohige (the Bearded Worker) has made similar points -- but no one's listening to him, either!

Sekingar at least appears to have seen the light in this regard and at least appreciates that heroes, whatever their abilities, need to be used *well* rather than be treated as a disappointment for not being S-Class heroes. But he's just one person and has only recently been promoted.

And now... with the advent of actual competition, the spigot of fresh new bodies to take in and use up has largely dried up. What a to do!

Speaking of drying up

Genos is draining the very life out of Kuseno at the moment -- it reminds me of Uu and Reigen. Yes, the doctor made him a cyborg, and so on one level, he can't really complain if he's the it man when it comes to giving him upgrades. But Kuseno is all alone. The stress of worrying about Genos when the latter casually dumps horrors on him and the burden of designing upgrades (how do you God-proof a person, anyway?) is really getting to him. And he has no one to talk to, let well alone share the burden with. [3]

Try not to die of overwork, doctor! At least not before you can find Genos a new situation.

Asides

[1] Looks like Fubuki lives with Tatsumaki in the manga. Either that or she lives close by and has a key. Love to see it.

[2] Truly an eavesdropper hears no good of themselves. The manga change from Metal Knight being scolded in person to overhearing it is brilliant.

[3] In a kinder world, Kuseno would be able to call Bang to at least have a sympathetic ear (heh, and Bang had a personality transplant). Kind and ONE don't mix, at least when it comes to his fictional characters, so too bad.

One of his main weirder quirks is the whole thing of him being a literal microphone who can detach from his body

Even after getting his body fixed, he can still detach himself at will, either to get out of some weird situation, or some days he just wakes up with chronic pain and goes "Eh. Don't feel like havin' a body today." and he detaches hehehe

🔪 A headcanon relating to fighting/violence

Mike can't exactly fight, but due to his smaller size, he still developed a bunch of prey animal instincts that make him so he refuses to back down without a fight!

You can PROBABLY still fight him and win, but it's the equivalent of fighting a rabid raccoon that has electricity powers and refuses to back down

👗 A headcanon about their clothes

Mike's favourite colour is pink and so is nearly everything he wears :)

He's actually quite enthusiastic about fashion and likes being dapper and well-dressed no matter the occasion

❤️‍🔥 A romantic headcanon

It's absolutely no secret that Mike is overly romantic and cutesy <3 He absolutely wears his heart on his sleeve and loves Host so unconditionally

He absolutely loves singing and I imagine he's come up with songs for Host, just for the two of them and no one else...

Host is just as head over heels for him as Mike is for them~

its why i made it! put those guys in situations. corazon especially. his blind and even overwhelming trust in people he cares about is so interesting. he knows how terrible of person doffy is, so why on earth would he think he'd be exempt from his brother's rage?? its cuz he refused to believe doffy was completely beyond redemption... hes such an interesting critter

and ofc hes so important to law as well bc without him you get this 13 y/o who has been shunned and loathed by the world for no reason since he was TEN never being told that he can be loved and he should be loved. he never gets the chance to learn that there is kindness in the world and things worth living for. so now we have a child filled with anger and grief who's been handed an immensely strong power and he's going to use it. ofc he's going to lash out he doesn't know any better and desperately craves control and revenge to feel safe again.

doflamingo is a bitch and i hate him and he's also a manipulative bastard who is SO fun to think about. he acts exactly like a cult leader and thinking about those tactics of manipulation is really interesting. law's a dapper little fellow when hes a kid in the au bc doffy would buy him things so law would feel indebted to him!! hes a bitch!!!!!

Dapper Reviews: Tome of Beasts 3 by Kobold Press

A while ago I mentioned that I might try out reviewing some of the 3rd party books that I come across in my ceaseless quest to acquire as much 5th edition material as possible, promising that I’d report in once some of my then in progress kickstarters came to fruition.

It’s only appropriate then that my first review is targeted at a monster book, as it was just this sort of product and the evocative entries for enemies inside are what got me interested in d&d.

Overall I can’t recommend Kobold press’s monster books (both previous tome of beasts and their creature codex) enough: The art is great, the majority of the monsters are both original and interesting,with special attention paid to giving most monsters a really interesting suite of abilities to use in and out of combat.

The one complaint I DO have is that a few too many monsters are conceptually quite flat, especially if you’re like me and have seen your share of monster books over the years.  There’s a few too many monsters which are as basic as “here’s an ooze/elemental/plant” monster that behaves exactly like you’d expect and it attacks people or “ here’s a slight variation on a preexisting fantasy monster presented as is”.  This problem mainly pops up in how the monster stat enteries are formated, for which I’ll use a page that’s been freely made available from one of their other books to demonstrate.

See how the space which describe the creature’s lore is directly competing with the area occupied by its stat block? Well since the monsters in TOB3 tend to be more mechanically complex than earlier entries in the series, that space is even more shrunk, leaving less room to actually delve into their concept. Making new monsters is always going to be a balancing act between fluff/crunch, but it’s not helped by the fact that many lore entries just go describing how the creature LOOKS, which seems absolutely needless when there’s a brilliantly illustrated picture less than an inch across the page.  What most disappointed me however was that many of these monsters ( even the good ones) lacked a definitive reason other than “ they are aggressive” for them to feature in an adventure or come into conflict with the party. Monsters NEED storyseeds baked into their writeup, from how their behavior brings them into conflict with people to valuable resources that make others hunt them to their relationships with other monsters. As a DM I can make all that stuff up, but being able to use other people’s good ideas is the whole reason to buy monsterbooks in the first place.  

I’d gladly have taken an overall reduced monstercount to give some of these creatures double spreads, especially when some monsters are so thin in concept that they’re effectively different versions of eachother....did the brain eating “lobe lemur” and the violent “scarsupial” really need to be two different creatures? Quite a few critters in this book suffer from being a slightly more shallow version of another in the same book/series.

My one last gripe is that there’s quite a few monsters in this book that are just outright lifted from world mythologies without a hint of acknowledgement save for a few “ethic” trappings.... which is... actually one of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to monster books.  I get all excited about the idea of a swamp-dwelling giant that mercilessly punishes those that try to steal from its magic garden but will offer aid when asked... only to find out its from Burma and is being presented alongside the company’s original IP.   That just seems... skeevy to me? It’s fine to be inspired by other cultures (aside appropriating the actively sacred) but doing so with no notification?....eh?

Faults aside, fantastic monsterbook, especially for the price, check it out on the Kobold Press store or your preferred digital retailer.

Periplaneta are very dapper and sleek! so slippery and adaptive. if it wasn’t for the way they tend to stink I’d definitely keep some, perhaps the “Venom” morph with white eyes and a black body.

I like the pill roaches… nice and metallic. and who can resist the big leafy blaberids! or the little green ones, for that matter. plus there’s domino roaches, and colorful little Thyrsocera… there aren’t many roaches I can say I really dislike! aesthetically perfect critters

Yes! All of them like animals! Like who doesn't? skjakjsak Top Hat, yeah, not even horses are on his good graces... but it's also kinda reciprocal? Animals don't like him and he doesn't like animals, it's been like that since he has memory so they naturally keep each other apart. But you know those long nosed dogs? yeah, those are funny, clean and refined. Top Hat does like those dogsss

On more positive and general note, the Stars are more of bird-watchers kinda fellas Oh back in the day~, Oh back in Scotland, Oh right Up River~! These guys do love some birbs, doves, pidgeons, seagulls and such~ Captain Star has such a good time to looking through window lol

In the similar vein that Donald has a Duck, I'd say Warrior has a bunch of Cats. With garbage comes rats, and with rats comes cats, so Warrior lets them stay, sometimes plays and feeds them, and since he's so nice more cats started to appear!! There were 14 last time I checked, but it could be 16 now

Of course, Grampus is more of an aquatic creatures kinda guy, from the huge whales to the tiniest critters that the naked eye can see. Hercules is also like that... except for dolphins. He doesn't like dolphins. Not since That Day™ (i don't know what happened and he won't elaborate :I)

And Ten Cents. Ten Cents is definitely a dog person, he could get this huge fuckin dog ever to run around and play catch and rough play if we include the his human version aaaaa it'd be the dream come true!

The Z-Stacks do like the typical cats and dogs, but especially the lil creatures that can do favors for them, so be glad that they don't know about the intelligence and loyalty of crows lol. Also Zip is def a bug collector.... and eater

So on that note, the Zs favourite animals are actually any of the edibles. You know, your cows, pigs, chicken and in the water, fish, shrimps, sharks even... If they can eat it, they like it, in and out of the plate xd

There's also a parrot that visits Zero's office and imitates his voice causing ruckus in work hours since the fleet barely sees thei Captain so they think is him and hilarity ensues sjskjskjskjs it's kinda a love-hate relationship cause the parrot sometimes remembers things that Zero forgot so it's not all trouble after all...
