ive come to create a incredibly lengthy post about the new mascot horror game called Indigo Park

I need to ramble ( haha rambley ) about it as i have just quit twitter for an indefinite time for my own mental health as an autistic cannot last on there at all

anyway, im going to talk about all the reason why indigo park is so good and what i hope from it!! and any criticisms i have for it, i honestly dont have many even though its so early to talk about.

how i found out about indigo park:

UNIQUEGEESE!! naturally, i was watching one of masons past streams on his youtube playing FNF after having rejoined the FNF community after its update and finding out about the mod HIT SINGLE; the mod masons was playing( people know it mostly for the silly billy song ) and he had mentioned about him making a mascot horror game which i shrugged off naturally because i am not a fan of modern mascot horror as most of it seems to be low effort and genuinely unappealing, i knew he had made something that was definitely made with love but i didnt have the will to check it out until a announcement trailer dropped which i then saw snippets of the game and the characters and environment, which i was definitely intrigued so I played the game myself.

My thoughts playing the game:

and found it surpisingly good compared to any other mascot horror game, it was unique, genuinely had awesome character designs and very high quality’s graphics and beautiful models and lighting were stunning, again really surprised having endured the hideousness of other low quality mascot horror games, to then find a game with fucking great models ( unlike banban, 2 billion polygon remote or whatever lmfao ).

I started the game and to be real as a extremely gay furry who loves little silly furry boys i felt like i was gonna explode during every single rambley voice line and animation played and fell so in love with him, now a massive comfort character and ive draw. him like 12 times prior to the games first chapter being released like 2 days ago lol, ive never gotten so attached so quicky in my life which definitely makes rambley and indigo park a really special game.

I really love this game, the pacing is really well done, the horror isnt low quality, the like actual character models for lloyd and molly are really gorgeous, i just think the hair and some of the texturing is over done slightly, but definitely made me shit myself multiple times despite this, all while i was laughing with my new silly raccoon boyfriend 💜💜💜💜

hugeeeeww shoutout to team neutron for the the absolute gorgeous expressive rambley screen animations and the credits theme that left me almost tbe same way portal 2’s credits effected me the first time i ever played and definitely huge huge props to otterboyva for the super adorable voice of rambley.

what do I hope for the future of Indigo Park

I hope for the future of this game that content farms and bootleggers disregard it, but this doesnt give me hope seeing that one rambley plush that a company made before the first chapter even released that was completely unlicensed. I will be avoiding social media in efforts to not see people start shitting on this game if it becomes on the same level and milked by content farms like what happened to the amazing digital circus ( i watched this on the day the pilot released, and was equally devastated as many others to see it being used as low effort bait in shitty kids cartoons on youtube shorts )

It's interesting that you say what Sonic fans want equals bad press, but I am curious now, what IS it that fans want? And what does "everyone outside the cult" want? Personally I'd argue proper momentum physics reinstated as a core element of Sonic gameplay seems to be the most consistent direction fans seem to want (due to the amount of fangames made attempting it), but tbf I don't think I'm as in-tune with the Sonic community as you are. I could be wrong about that.

I'm digging so deep in my inbox now I don't even remember what "what Sonic fans want equals bad press" is in reference to. Probably just in reference to how insular the wants, needs, and desires Sonic fans can be. Sometimes they want things that don't actually matter.

I think people "outside the cult" just want a good game. And by that I mean: a game with smooth, polished controls, a strong visual identity, and one that doesn't fall apart if you look at it funny.

Like compare Sonic Frontiers to Super Mario Odyssey and what do you get?

Super Mario Odyssey is a game where all the mechanics sing the same song. Everything feeds into everything else in a simple, clear, obvious loop. Mario's movement is always consistent and player-driven. You rarely if ever lose control. Every single world is visually distinct, creative, and colorful, while maintaining the same overall aesthetic. It is unquestionably a Mario game, as even new mechanics fit like a glove into the ongoing evolution of this franchise. Nothing ever feels out of place.

Sonic Frontiers is a game where half the worlds look identical, and there's clutter awkwardly dumped on top of everything. All of the cyberspace levels reuse existing level designs but beat all the personality out of them by recycling generic aesthetics. Sonic feels stiff and heavy, and after decades of not being able to get Sonic's controls to feel good, Sega just gives you a bunch of ability toggles and acceleration sliders and expects you to figure it out yourself. No matter what you pick, it's not hard to break the game's physics systems, either intentionally or more often by accident. Yet another attempt to add combat depth just proves how little anyone at Sega understands what's supposed to make Sonic the Hedgehog special or unique, instead falling back to "shonen anime hero" tropes.

People "outside the cult" want a Super Mario Odyssey level Sonic game, and that doesn't mean they want Cappy transformations or a food volcano level. They want a coherent, polished, enjoyable game that feels like it was made by people who weren't just duct taping table scraps together that they fished out of the garbage at the last second.

Sonic fans will stand up and say "I liked [xyz] about Sonic Frontiers" but that's not what this is about, because those same people would also be happy with a coherent, polished, enjoyable game that feels like it was made by people who weren't just duct taping table scraps together.

It's the same argument I used to use back in the day when I was getting people defending Sonic 06 on my Youtube video: You want better games, don't you? Some people are too busy sifting through the weeds and have no concept of the big picture.

Everybody should be happy with a good product, in or outside of the cult. But Sonic games are more often made for the cult than not.

i still think helluva as an indie project is good to exist and personally i love the animation and theatrics, it just. if you've ever tried to write a satisfying story, ever, you can kinda see that it falls in a Lot of places that just. don't really leave the rest to actually be a satisfying story. like, at all.

anyway. i could very well be wrong, horrendously wrong!

i just. idk i would hate for people to so enjoy the show and then be let down, especially for a project that could be a big step in indie animation taking off more (not the only step, obviously, but it's not inaccurate to say hh +hb are Very Big in the indie animation circle).

for like 3 weeks i was wondering why i was sleeping so much and felt listless. and just now I managed to email 3 people and responded to a month old message in the span of an hour because I got back to TAKING MY FUCKIN MEDS..........

#MOTHER FFFFUCKER #to be fair. my doc said I could stop taking them while im on break since i wouldnt need to be constantly pumped on stimulants #im not sure if it was a side effect but i managed to take like 3 different naps in one day and STILL managed to sleep thru the whole night #at least 2 days into my break. the weird thing is i didnt feel more or less rested afterwards. but mentally i think im in a good place rn #to really put the level of awakeness im at rn i feel weirdly confident i could start one piece. also bc of that sick new opening it BANGS #the song is really good and im in love with the animation style. did some digging and it seems one of the lead animators is masato mori #but i could be wrong. it seems he also did some work on mp100 which could explain a lot lol.. he uses smear frames really well to convey #consistent movement and fluidity!!! someone else might have done color design but it works really really well esp with odas style!! #just love the overall vibe and aesthetic and id really love to study it and incorporate a bit of it into my art.. especially the thick #outlines which i think helps to separate characters and objects on screen. though i have to say the style is definitely more suited to #animation bc of the simpleness and smears. maybe that will help me explore shapes and perspective when i draw... i wanna get better #at drawing poses and angles but i have a hard time wrapping my head around space and using perspective guide lines NGHHHH #i wonder if it has to do with my dogshit ability to judge distance. not depth perception but like. judge how far smth is in metres etc #im also wearing an N95 for the first couple weeks back bc of the wave. absolutely NO BODY is wearing a mask its so fucking over #where im sitting ive heard 5 different people coughing probably not into their elbows!!! and im just. head in my fucking hands #there was a kid sitting a couple seats away in class coughing as he pleases and i wanted to grab him in a chokehold so badly. It's such a masterpiece and also a complete mess. It's not all that good but also incredible. The dialogue is ridiculous, but the voice acting is phenomenal. The lyrics are so silly, but the songs are fantastic, both instrumentally and in voice performance. The charicter designs are overly complicated and look amature, but the animation??? I'm probably in the minority with this but I wish the first 3 arcs of Sailor Moon Crystal were a two-part movie series (like they did with Eternal and Cosmos.).

This will probably make the Crystal fans seethe at the mouth bc God forbid anyone has an opinion different from them. But we probably would've avoided a lot of the embarrassing poor animation choices had they turned the material into two-part movies for each arc. They'd have more time to focus on the good bits that moved the story along. They'd have more time to also focus on the animation quality of the movies.

Maybe, as a result, they could've spent more time honing their character designs versus getting better after three FULL seasons of SMC.

Sorry not sorry, the designs in Eternal and Cosmos are way better than the poor attempts to copy Naoko's style that plagued the first 3 seasons of SMC.

Divinity

The conversation topic tonight is “Moments that single-handedly changed the way I make things forever” I suppose so.

(You can find the owner and creator here on tumblr too at toastyglow and definitely do, they make so many good things other than just this one particular creation of theirs that im obsessed with)

I may not animate or anything but the way my brain imagines Moments for things im gunna write or draw or like, plot points as a whole was deeply and unexplainably influenced by one particular animation i found three or four-ish years ago and to this day I am with bated breath obsessed with it. Ashivon, Sanga and Tsela live in a special place in my heart. I could talk someones ear off about all the little moments that Kill Me from the original and how much I gush over the following ones, and how violently i am waiting for part 5.

(fucking SPOILERS, but I will never stop thinking about him straining at his own fucking execution all for the sake of a child he’s never met about to live the life he’s experienced or the knife sliding across Sangas chest, every rewatch has me vibrating violently)

(Also tonight specifically, I am thinking a lot about how Ashivon was probably just referred to as The Executioner and how scantly often Sanga and Ashivon would have been alone together safe enough for her to have used his name and how long it might have been since she’s been able to call him by name when they finally escape and thats going to live in my head rent free for a While now.)
