random question, but why do Algerians still hate the French? French Algeria hasn’t existed since 1962, so why so much hatred still?

First of all 1962 is 61 years ago. You’re saying it as if it was centuries ago and nobody was alive anymore. My grandparents who are very much alive Al hamdulilah were born under French colonialism. I’m 29 and I saw the consequences of French tortures on my great grandpa with my own eyes (they cut off some of his fingers) as I was lucky enough to meet him (he died when I was 8-9) This is not some ancient event that has no consequences anymore on people. It still has consequences on the country and on the people. Like you’re going to pretend that France didn’t have lynching against Algerians until the 90’s? You’re going to pretend anti Algerian racism is not so present in France that the French word for a racist attack/lynching (ratonnade) is not a mix between an anti Algerian slur and the word “beating”?

Now to answer your question.

We don’t hate the French they hate us that’s different. Algerians don’t give a flying fuck about France. Algerians would want few things more than pretend France doesn’t exist.

But France hate us and resent us for taking our independence. Are we supposed to stay silent when France says we should be grateful for colonialism? Are we supposed to stay silent when they say we should be apologizing not them? Are we supposed to stay silent when absolutely nobody got punished for what they did to Algerians and that they actually got rewarded? Are we supposed to stay silent when the remains of our ancestors (some of them children) are still kept and exposed in French museums despite asking to get them back? Are we supposed to stay silent when France still has our archives including the ones before they colonized Algeria and still refuse to give us those archives? Are we supposed to stay silent when they say the trauma of their colonizers grandparents leaving Algeria is worst than the trauma of our grandparents seeing their loved ones being killed, tortured, raped? Are we suddenly pretending transgenerational trauma doesn’t exist and that 132 years of colonialism and the denial of the horrors committed, worst than the denial switching the blame, has no consequences on Algerians today? My grandpa still sleeps with a shotgun because of the trauma. My father left Algeria because his mother was so traumatized by what the French did during the war of liberation (they killed one of her child, he wasn’t 2 years old yet) that when the civil war started she told my dad to leave cause she didn’t want to lose an other child.

Now do you plan on asking French people why they hate Algerians or do you keep your questioning to Algerians only? We don’t hate France but if we did we would have every single right to.

Lastly if I was a Jewish woman posting about Nazis Germany and antisemitism in present Germany as well as Neonazis would you have felt you have the right to ask me why I still have issues with it cause it happened in 1945? Unless you’re a racist scum you wouldn’t have done it cause you know how horrific the holocaust was and how fucked up it would be to question the feelings of descendants of survivors (I’m still giving you the benefit of the doubt maybe your ask was genuine and you didn’t know any better). So why do you think you have the right to question how Algerians feel about France?

You were sitting on a supply box, reading the novel you hadn't been able to put done for the last two days... when you weren't forced to spend time with the others. It was the only salvation you had when you were forced back into a Payback mission. This one was planned alongside the CIA and you hated any mission where the whole team were together... the only people you could handle was Noir and Ben. But Ben had been particularly frustrating to you the last 6 months, and you had only gone seperate ways with Noir just two months ago.

It was mutual, but you knew he still had feelings towards you. It made it only somewhat awkward. But you enjoyed his friendship and wanted to see him succeed. Being a black man was hard enough, let alone being forced to hide it by the industry that claimed to be supportive and inclusive... you still couldn't believe those that praised Vought like they did. Yes, you wouldn't be where you were without them, but the man himself you know was racist, Nazi, scum.

"Every chance I see you, your face is buried in that book." You're interrupted by a smooth masculine voice.

You look up to see the beautiful brown eyes you had grown fond of over the last year. You return Noir's smile, genuine happiness washing over you.

"It's better than secondhand embarrassment." You smirk, nodding to the cheers coming from the munitions tent where you knew the rest of the team were showing off.

"Pfft, yeah fair. I thought we weren't allowed to bring personal belongings?" Noir queried, pointing back to the novel in your hands.

"We aren't. However, we are allowed those that assist our powers." You state, turning to the next page and marking your place before closing the book.

"Oh?"

"Yes. I must continuously sharpen one of my most powerful tools." I smirk. "And since that tool is my mind, reading books it will be. It's far more challenging than reading the minds of the majority of our so called team mates." I wink at him, making him chuckle. But something else flashes across his face.

Much like Ben, you made it a point to not enter Noir's mind. That didn't make you not curious, however.

"What is it?" You ask, seriousness colouring your tone.

"Just... Edgar is still refusing for me to take off the mask... even threatened to send me to Minneapolis."

"Erving..." you frown, not knowing what to say to make it better.

"It's okay... it's just part of the job, right?" He says, trying to make it seem okay. You know it isn't though.

"Yeah..." you say as you let out a heavy breath. You look back over to the noise erupting once again from the camp.

You suddenly sense Noir's prescience directly behind you and tense up.

Something was wrong.

As your powers open up, you move to stand up, trying to get away, but something is quickly covering your mouth and nose, strong arms pulling you backwards.

A gas you don't recognise is forcing its way into your lungs as you struggle with the strong man behind you. You attempt to get him off, your powers shooting out of your hands, a few boxes being destroyed in your attempt at freeing yourself.

Your mind expands to meet Noir's and you can feel his internal struggle concerning his actions. You try to jumble his mind with your powers, but the bitter tasting gas is rapidly making you grow weak. Your muscles give way, your body slumping against Noir as you are now paralysed.

"I'm so sorry, Y/N..."

You jerk upwards, your chest tight and a bitter taste on your tongue as you gasp for breath.

"Y/N?" You feel a hand touch your back, but you jerk away from the contact, still gasping for air.

You turn and see green orbs staring at you, brows furrowed as you feel like you can't breath. No amount of air that you're sucking into your lungs is helping you.

"Y/N, it was a nightmare!"

You continues to gasp.

"Y/N, look at me." Hands grasp either side of your face. "You need to calm down. Listen to my voice. Listen to me." You tune into the deep timbre of his voice, eyes focusing on his. "Good girl. My heart genuinely goes out to those young kids whose choices are conscription (a fucked up and unethical concept even in a normal country...and they're not in a normal country) and carrying out genocide and ethnic cleansing or jail time. And the fact that there are young folk, teenagers, who look at this, the MASSIVE societal pressure, the ostracism, the violence they themselves are subjected to and choose the jail time, understanding that said jail time is a paid holiday compared to what your average Palestinian is subjected to by the occupation. They're folk who had the integrity to realise "Never Again" means "Never Again for ANYONE", and that makes them bigger heroes than any uniformed murderer posting snuff videos and 'trophies' to tiktok. Going to end this here, as having a rant about everything foul and perverse about the zionist entity and it's genocidal actions is an entire academic discipline's worth of writing and far more eloquent folk than I have made that point/written those books, and it's better you go read some of those. Can anyone point to actual cases of unapologetic and unironic Nazi fans in stuff like WH40K?

Because I hear this all the time. And as someone that has always been a video gamer, my entire life, I get the same vibe as those problem glasses wearing revisionists that very generously define everything from, "actual racists and monsters" to, "guy that voted for a republican at one point" as the same kind of scum.

We're told to just take it as fact that the Warhammer 40K fandom is just, "so full of fascists and Nazis and dudebros" and yet the only stories I appear to find are everybody on the bus clapped stories that you totally have to just trust their lived and personal truth bro they totally happened.

So naturally they imagine they must be even 1 out of 20 of the fandom in numbers. You're supposed to just take their word for it of people that would likely lump you in the same pile if you don't, "check your privilege."

Don't get me wrong. A Nazi is a Nazi, and if a person is trying to earnestly speak about some sort of racial inferiority of others, superiority of someone else, and/or similar horse shit, it is what it is.

But I'm seeing a lot of people very quick to just determine A.) "the fandom is just full of fash and Nazis" B.) "I saw a socially maladjusted asshole at the war games table with actual unironic Nazi painted guys" C.) "Therefore we can safely determine there are probably hundreds more hiding."

Are there any compiled lists of consistently vocal nat-soc WH40K fans? Youtubers? Vtubers? Streamers anywhere? Any source of non-anonymous figures where one photo or one encounter where someone could either be just trying to be "funny" and very much not being so, or even someone dressing up as the enemy and disappearing back into anonymity to "prove the cryptid?" Because even a guy like Chris-Chan has a consistent online persona presence.

Give me names. Give me deets. Give me dirt. Where are all the consistent and unapologetic WH40K fan personas to scrutinize if they're actually the bastions of problematic, rather than rumors preceding them? Those enigmatic masses we have to overcompensate for because, "your average 40K fan is a white supremacist"?

They might be a good person, but they would still make a bad cop, because the role of a cop is a very flawed one.

Many cops are also racist and/or religious extremists, there are cases of police officers taking selfies with conservative neo-nazis. Some might say "you shouldn't exclude people from being police officers for their beliefs, that's discrimination", but like??? You wouldn't want your child's teacher to be a pedophile or a groomer or a "minor attracted person" (aka a fancy way of saying child predator), this is the same thing! People don't want protectors who genuinely believe that they are scum for the colour of their skin or the way that they speak, because those protectors aren't gonna do their job properly! Because they are biased!

Rwanda is not a safe country. It is an authoritarian state that has documented human rights violations to their name, not least involving asylum seekers and they try to shut down anyone, including international journalists, who bring attention to this.

But we already know this. But we have entered a state of cruel and spiteful one-upmanship from people who even when they have power still want to destroy anything that disagrees with them. Conservativism has ruined the world for at least 40 years of political and economic power; but they will always have a chip on their shoulder about culture.

Our most recent iteration is being anti-woke. This is the latest variation that runs from being anti-PC left-over 90s crap to full-on white supremacy in the mainstream. Everyone from the most extreme racists in public to washed-up comedians now whines about woke culture somehow being responsible for their present state of affairs. Woke, like PC before it, holds no real power. It is just a case of being polite and decent to people, hated by those unable to face that life has moved on; or because the greatest political achievement they hope for in life is to tell racist jokes without feeling guilty. Woke holds no power, so it does not really exist in the people accused of it.

Woke is an excuse for failure; woke is something to blame when time has moved on and no one will tolerate your bullshit and unfunny jokes any more.

The painful truth is we have failed to take real control of our lives. Working for a living has never been fun, but in today’s failed realm of neo-liberal desperation, it defines our lives more than ever; as we work for less, have to pay out increasing amounts for a roof over our head or food in our bellies. Nothing means anything beyond productivity; this is all we are good for and all we will ever be used for - in that world, what do you expect culture to amount to? It’s just another excuse for producing capital in some way and nothing more.

When it comes to the prominent practitioners of anti-wokism, they are very easy to take apart. They are nothing more than an attention-seeking self-serving and usually talentless twat demanding you give them your precious time and sometimes money; sometimes they are the Nazi scum that we dealt with yesterday and they are back with a new version of the old prejudice.

Always beware of false prophets and anyone not taking on capitalism is not tackling the problem, ever. Everything else is nothing more than our old enemy; distraction.

Many try to excuse What is subversive? Is it too much in our broken pretend society to ask for something with meaning? Real subversion is almost impossible to find, not least because it has been co-opted as part of the capital takeover of everything; or it has fallen victim to the very anti-working class politics we have lost out to; because the middle class and higher are never going to take down a system that they benefit from.

I have never had a problem with being offensive; I have a problem with doing it for no reason. This is the behaviour of school kids.

All we are doing is allowing overgrown teenagers to take our time and attention; in a period when it is in short supply and the stress of the world is far too much.

How often do you see a genuinely subversive viewpoint put across? Something that challenges power. I want to see the death of patriotism. I know this viewpoint will annoy some people, deeply upset others and get me death threats if the wrong people pick it up. But I mean it sincerely because I think it is a cultural poison that makes the world a worse place. It causes conflict and the only people who believe it (‘believe’ is debatable) are the worst, most repulsive people in society. Racist, backward, always hiding their extremism (up to and often including Fascist ideals of race purity) behind love of nation and the violent enforcers of that ideology, the police and armed forces. They attack anyone who deviates from this viewpoint; anyone who dares to cross an imaginary boundary in a land we are constantly lectured to is ‘free’.

All of these characteristics were present in fascist Italy, Nazi Germany and plenty of other human rights abusing societies before and since.

It is also just pathetic. You do nothing for the people of this country, yet claim you love it. You are always criticising it; saying people are terrible and they do not belong. Waving a flag is the most low-energy, low intellect activity that can be. It involves no commitment.

Ditch this grievance politics. You get nothing from it and the worst people and corporations just monetise your discontent.

How very insane that you can so randomly, toxically dishout out your very noxious vitriol with such utter impunity to those whom you unwarrantedly hate, crucially invariably have never met and undoubtedly don't know, while clearly doing so, evidently on account of your very endemic and basically earnestly cultivated racism; all this compounded by your fatuous and decidedly, keenly perpetual envy of them, in full conjunction also with the quite evilly demented actions on your part that malevolently stipulate that these unfairly slated, victims of yours, must be thoroughly despised because they have ethical attitudes, attendant with basically honest and hardworking strategies significantly diametrically opposed to your really quite facile and vacuous way of life.

All this consistent with the puerile notion you assiduously cling on to; that you are effectively the clever ones, routinely doing whatever you want, which is essentially nothing, and in return being fulsomely kept and actually ongoingly maintained very obviously by a very generous state benefits system; aptly disproving from your perspective the boorish myth that says you simply don't really get something for nothing. While conscientious and distinctively, irrefutably hardworking mugs, as you see them, carry on rather pathetically with their altruistic and conscionable equality of opportunity nonsense, for all; in a delusional, nonracial society.

A behavioural pattern on her part that just didn't change however even after marriage to Randolph, and undoubtedly getting him to legitimize her bastard offspring. Clearly so, as it's well documented and effectively distinctively also known that Jeanette had in excess of 200 lovers really, as a married woman, some of whom subsequently were younger than her son Winston. A basically working class quite genuine council estate female, of whatever age would undeniably have been called at best a tart and equally branded as a whore, while these obviously evidently likeminded women of these quite laughably, so-called upper class society, in marked contrast were, and still are in 2024, regarded as socialites.

But what literally effectively does have me in stitches of laughter, when I discuss this and other associated issues with students or other very prescient minded academics, is that these very denigrated white Britons, real ones or pseudo, imaginary and equally evidently very proselytized and bogus ones like Boris Kemal, alias Johnson, equally so Sarah Vine, quite unquestionably also, Tom Bauer, Nigel Farage and irrefutably the rest of this toxic scum, is that their pretence at being authentically British is as essentially nonsensical as if I were to effectively start calling myself a white Caucasian distinctly because as an enforcedly born Brit, who as an Afro-Caribbean, a clearly proud Bajan to be precise, who quite literally, like all other Afro-Caribbeans like myself that have been involuntarily during slavery and specifically colonialism also, been involuntarily simply biologically, distinctively impregnated with the white man's Y chromosome that action in essence, then essentially literally makes me as well a white Caucasian! Lol! Thanks but no thanks! Quite happy unquestionably as I am! At least in Britain whites still control the country, which isn't a case in the USA, where the indigenous North American has no meaningful say: if any at all!

so, as we all know, the elder scrolls is a pretty racist game series. this is a well known and pretty indisputable fact, demonstrated by things like the heavy anti indigenous racism, the orientalism with the dunmer and other stuff, but something i personally haven't really seen talked about is the incredible amount of anti romanism w/ the khajiit. which, yknow, i'm not exactly upset over as the vast majority of tes fans aren't romani, but! it's still bad and it makes me so goddamn uncomfortable at the best of times! i don't deserve to have panic attacks over the amount of racism that is subjected to my eyes over cat people! so here is my public service announcement

note: i'm not like, 100% sure the writers of the elder scrolls were intending any of this or meaning to code the khajiit as romani, and i'm not going to claim that, but that doesn't change that i have seen people use real life nazi propaganda to justify why the nords are right to hate the khajiit or that most people who notice these things read the khajiit as romani lmfao so! and i'm also not an authority on this and i don't want to be treated like one. this is just my romani opinion, other romani people might have differing opinions and that's alright. gadje don't get to argue w/ me abt any of this tho ❤

so anyways, most of the romani coding comes from skyrim, by way of introducing the khajiit caravans, full of people hailing from a south asian coded country with a history of slavery, that travel from city to city, relying on nomadicism, due to being barred from the cities because of stereotypes that paint the khajiit as thieves and drug addicts who face racism as a result of things like that.

if you know anything about the romani, this probably sounds familiar! as we're also a south asian diaspora who are traditionally nomadic and have been enslaved, who face severe racism and are heavily stereotyped to be thieves and drug addicts. i've even personally been told that i'm dirty trash who shouldn't be allowed in a city! fun.

this alone isn't a problem. i would love to have some representation, even in the form of cat people, and if this was all there was with the khajiit and romani coding i would honestly be overjoyed! but alas.

the problem is that the khajiit are actually portrayed as thieves and drug users within the games. in ESO, the baandari clan honor the bandit god and follow a code that allows thievery, and practice fucking fortune telling. in skyrim, in skyrim, ri'saad is a fence for the thieves guild who accepts the offer after being given moon sugar and ahkari is hinted to be involved with to the skooma trade. the khajiit overall are cultural drug users, and while there is absolutely nothing wrong with cultural drug use and drug use in general i hope you can see why its bad in this context.

and even with all of this, if this was where it began and end, it wouldn't be that bad. as far as i know, this is all accidental, and none of this is what keeps me up at night. what bothers me is how fans react to the romani elements of the khajiit.

i've had to see the use of the g word, something that is personally very triggering to me, almost everywhere, both casually and in a demeaning manner. i've seen the khajiit described as the scum of tamriel that live in scum infested sewers hooked on skooma and live off of imperial assistance (which is another thing that i've been told in regards to my people, that we're scum who live off of government assistance). i've seen khajiit called useless drug addicts who have no home. i've seen people say they see khajiit as dirty, filthy gypsies and tend to imagine skinning them for wall hangers.

it's tiring. it fucking hurts on a whole different level to see a slur utilized against your people and against you everywhere, hurts to know that people still view you and your people as a dirty and subhuman, and i'm honestly pretty done if we're being honest. tes has been ruined for me because of this stuff. and i'm not even asking for y'all to pay for me Ethnic Therapy Tm lol all i'm asking is that gadje learn about anti romanism and what that means, learn how they can support romani people, that they stop using the g word and perpetuating anti romani things, and that y'all don't let others get away with racism against romani people anymore

That is what is so genuinely frightening about TNS. Like, it’s hard to know what’s worse. In the first series, Alan getting so much support was understandable, because he was making an effort of appear logical and moral, and he was charismatic enough to pull it off. Post-series one though, he’s just spewing nastiness like he doesn’t know how bad it sounds, and despite some major scandals in his career, he remains afloat. It’s fascinating and hilarious to watch, but it gives you an uneasy feeling

Honestly, there are some real British politicians from today and the past who've been similar to Alan in some ways, or at least been nasty fuckers who've said awful things, and they tend to have a cohort of loyal supporters in society. Take Nigel Farage and his racist Brexit campaigns (he now has a spot on the alt right news channel GB News, where not long ago he courted headlines when he got mad at the Royal National Lifeboat Institution for rescuing refugees from drowning in the English Channel).

After the Brexit referendum was won, he announced they'd secured victory "without a single bullet being fired" despite, not even a month earlier, Labour MP Jo Cox being shot to death in her constituency by a white supremacist Brexit supporter because she was campaigning for the Remain side. He also used an anti-immigration poster during the campaign featuring Middle Eastern people and the words "BREAKING POINT", which people were quick to point out looked awfully similar to some Nazi propaganda about Jewish people. A lot of us know that Farage is scum, yet there are still lots of people who like him (or, at least, liked him during Brexit). And why is this? Because he's got charisma. He was smart enough to convince people that he was normal, he went to drink in pubs, he wasn't one of these out of touch Westminster elite types - and people bought that. At the time, the Tory party was being led by posh knobs David Cameron and George Osborne, who were about as good at convincing people they were ordinary as the Queen is (I mean, literally, David Cameron is a fifth cousin twice removed to the Queen).

Boris Johnson is another example of a cunt who seems to be invincible. He can basically say or do whatever, break lockdown rules and throw parties, fill his cabinet with far right turds who break the rules and aren't reprimanded, make blatantly racist remarks, and still he suffers no consequences. Still people like him because "haha he's Boris isn't he funny". Johnson wanted to be "World King" when he was a child - he is an entitled, posh, bumbling imbecile who won't even admit to how many children he has. He didn't even take part in any Tory leadership debates that he didn't want to - and we all knew he didn't need to anyway, because he was going to be elected leader no matter what. Because there are different rules for him. Because he can do whatever he wants. Because he's got the charisma.

Alan B'Stard actually possesses more charisma in his little finger than the entire current Conservative Party combined - a lot of them are absolutely hopeless at appearing genuine or just as though they aren't running on buzzword autopilot. Alan being so charismatic is partly down to Rik, partly down to the fact that he's a fictional character and can have all his qualities exacerbated. Alan knows who he needs to please - the people who actually have the power to hurt him, career wise - and those people aren't the British public. This may sound wrong - surely the British public are the exact people who have the power to harm Alan's career in a democracy? But not really.

I mean, for starters, it's only the people in the constituency of Haltemprice who get any say on whether Alan keeps his seat. Alan has the largest majority in the House, so he doesn't need to worry about keeping them onside like an MP in a more marginal constituency would. In a safe Tory constituency like Haltemprice appears to be, Alan can basically do whatever anyway and people will still vote Tory. A lot of people see voting in a presidential sense (they see it as voting for the party leader, when in actuality they're just voting for their MP). Anyone politically conservative, anyone who doesn't really care for politics and thinks "everything seems to be fine * shrug *", anyone who's doing well and doesn't want to rock the boat - they're all going to vote for Alan, even if they don't like him personally. And so he is free to be as unpleasant to people as he likes. A lot of his unpleasantness isn't even public knowledge, anyway. It isn't until the last episode that anyone outside of politics finds out about his and Piers' sadomasochistic relationship. 😂

Anyway, went off on a ramble there. Excuse me. Alan's career and the stuff that happens to him while he still manages to stay afloat are hugely exaggerated, of course they are, but that's just because he exists in a sitcom where not everything has to be absolutely realistic. I don't think someone convicted of murder and only reprieved by an act of god would actually be able to get his old job back as an MP. 😂 Well, you'd hope not. Even though we know Alan didn't actually commit the murder that time. Amongst the comically exaggerated in TNS however, there are very real streaks of the truth - and that's what makes it uneasy, I suppose. TNS isn't afraid of being upfront about the corruption and ineptitude all over the political sphere, from people of all walks of life. Maybe that's why there are quite a few things that were merely joked about in TNS that were later on revealed to be true.

A friendly reminder to all those who frequent my blog: if you happen to be a racist, transphobe, homophobe, anti-semite or another sort of bigot, you are not welcome here. Leave.

We’ve allowed bigotry to run rampant in the Hetalia fandom, and too little of us have made effort to stop such behaviour. Just yesterday, a literal Nazi started up an ask blog. If you care to look closely, you’ll find scum like this everywhere - on Wattpad and AO3 are racist fanfictions, on Instagram are groupchats filled with transphobes and here on Tumblr, there’s fanart of real-life issues that should never be used as means to create content.

We should’ve put a stop to this months ago, when people started making art and fanfics of COVID-19, such as APH China infecting APH Italy. As a Chinese person, do you know how much it hurts to see your nation being boiled down to be nothing but a dirty spreader of disease? In many other cases, such as the Mexico OC that sparked lots of controversy a few weeks ago, fellow POC fans and Jewish fans have been hurt by the racism in the fandom.

This has been going on for too long, long enough that we have to get our heads out of our behinds and actually take action to get rid of the bigotry that has sunken its claws into our community.

Guys, it’s going to take a lot of effort to rid the fandom of bigotry, but if we stop fighting over petty issues like ships and work together, it’s possible. Report any bigots found on social media, call out racist, anti-semitic or transphobic content and listen to what POC, Jewish and other minority fans have to say. “Trolling” is not an excuse, that doesn’t justify the discriminative actions of such people. Legitimate or not, discrimination has to go.

Don’t send hate anons or try to debate these people. Just report and block them; they don’t deserve our attention. They have no place in this fandom, and it’s high time we remind them of this.

And before I end this post, I’d like to apologise for only speaking up about this now. I’ll no longer be silent about this, I refuse to be complicit in the problem.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier - Episode 3

Man, Wandavision was so much better.

The one person I follow on here who also watches this show posts a lot about the politics of the show and how questionable they are, and I think there are some valid points to be made. But I think that this makes it very easy to miss the important truth: The show is amazingly committed to not saying anything at all. It’s mind-boggling.

A key element of this is how little America, as a concept, seems to figure into this. The show is all about two Captain America sidekicks, about his shield, about who gets to be Captain America, about the legacy and about the treatment of African americans… but it goes out of its way to never be about America. The new bad Captain America seems to work for a Generic Recurring Council, and also the german police (and in fact in the opening jumps out of a van that literally has “GRC Polizei” on its side).

You could maybe argue that there is a default assumption of USA-ness here; people keep talking about “your/our guys/side”, and that side seems to include the CIA. But that’s as specific as it gets, and since the other side is explicitly the fantasy evil against everything Hydra, that’s not really saying much. The scene where they introduce the new Captain America and introduce him as an all-american Hero is arguably the closest thing they come to saying something, anything, about the US as such.

Now, MCU Cap has never really been about America much. The closest he came was in the first movie, but even there, he fought Hydra instead of actual Nazis. Aside: ”The First Avenger” is easily the most pro-German american WW2 movie ever. Anyway, even then, he was on the side of the good guys, who happened to be Americans, but he wasn’t explicitly about the US, and in the movies since, he didn’t much touch on the US either; it was always about SHIELD and HYDRATE and Bucky. But in this show this becomes even more egregious, because they keep touching on stuff, apparently on accident, and then don’t do anything with it.

Isaiah Bradley is a big deal, isn’t he? You’d think he’d be a key piece to the question “what does it mean to be a symbol for America, and what is good and bad about that”. But in this show, he doesn’t actually matter. They bring him up because they know he’s important, but they don’t seem to know why.

Who does the new Captain America work for? You’d think it would either be the US government, or explicitly not the US government, but in reality it appears to be the generic world council of badness. Speaking of, what does it mean that there is a generic world council? There is a group called flag smashers who are against borders - or against the generic world council hoarding medicine, or something? It’s all stuff that seems meaningful, and you can read meaning into it (which never works in the show’s favour), but nope, it doesn’t mean anything.

The show seems scared of being political, in this political spy thriller about the meaning of a US symbol, and just ends up dithering about. Of course it’s impossible to be completely apolitical, so the show settles for what it assumes are default political statements nobody can disagree with - which are apparently, in the minds of the show runners, „US interventionism is good“, „everybody loves the US“ and so on. That sure is a choice.

So when the show talks about Captain America being a symbol or an icon, what it seems to talk about mostly is Steve Rogers himself. But that’s boring, because he’s boring, and the show has nothing of value to say about him anyway. „Steve sure was a good guy“ is the one and only note it has, and it bends itself over backwards to say it. When was Bucky into the whole stars-and-stripes stuff? Why don’t any of them remember Steve personally? Do they have opinions about Steve going back in time to destroy the legacy of Marvel’s first good TV show „Agent Carter“? …have the TV show versions of Sam and Bucky ever met Steve? The thing is that they talk about Steve as a symbol, but never as a person. The show knows that the shield is a symbol, and the man wielding it as a symbol, but it doesn’t seem to stand for anything. The shield is a symbol for the man who is a symbol because he has the shield, or something.

Okay, with that out of the way, some more notes:

The banter between Sam and Bucky is fairly good. If they had a better writer, and more of it, then we could almost say that the show had a strong point there.

Breaking Zemo out of prison is a stupid plot point, but Zemo makes the banter better, so I’m not going to complain.

I like Sharon. The mean reason why would be because she doesn’t care about the plot either, which makes her relatable, but honestly, she’s just fun here.

I do recognise the term Madripoor from the comics but I don’t care. Between you and me, I’m not sure I like the concept of „like Singapore or Hong Kong but everybody is a criminal“, it feels a bit racist to me. Are there people who have investigated the concept of the port city that is a wretched hive of scum and villainy, so to speak?

Zemo is supposed to be imprisoned in Berlin, but the uniform he steals to sneak out has the coat of arms of Hamburg. That’s completely unacceptable.
