Chapter 17: Journey (Second Half)
Even when the moon had reached the middle of the sky, the excitement of the Valentine tribe in the distance remained the same, and the joy continued.
But it was a joy that some people avoided.
A petite figure walked through the stone forest. It had gotten dark, and the moon overhead couldn't bring enough lighting. The shadows of the stone pillars made one unable to see the ground beneath them. When there came the sound of an eagle crying overhead, she lost her guard and knocked her head on a stone, groaning and singing in pain.
She was a human girl, maybe a Valentine.
The traveler jumped off the wind-eroded column and walked up to her. She retreated in fear, her back pressing tightly against the rock wall, and shouted, "Don't capture me! Please, let me escape! Don't tell the patriarch and the high priest!"
"Who are you?" asked the traveler.
The girl's panic was quelled by this question and this voice. She summoned the courage to look up at the stranger. In the moonlight, the handsome traveler made her unconsciously open her mouth: "I... My name is Aya, a member of the Valentines."
"Where are you going?" asked the traveler.
"Ant City... I want to go to the Ant City!" Aya whispered at first, but suddenly she said it out loud.
"You should go before dawn. The desert at night is very dangerous," the traveler warned.
Was he concerned about her? Aya looked at the stranger in astonishment. He was very tall, fair-skinned—very different from the short brown Valentines—and handsome.
Aya suddenly looked back and gazed at the bonfire in the distance. She suddenly had an idea in her heart.
She stood up from the ground, dusted the dust and gravel from her skirt, and looked at the traveler with trepidation. He stood in front of her as quiet as the moonlight, as determined as a desert poplar that refused to fall. She was nervous, but she was forced by her inner anxiety.
"You… Do you want to ask me to dance? We can dance all night!" Aya got up the courage and rushed out an invitation that was implicitly out of line.
If people from the Valentine tribe were here, they would understand her. Aya was afraid that he couldn't understand, and boldly squeezed a sentence from her throat: "I’ve grown up, I can do more intimate things than dancing, I can do it!"
When she finished speaking, she quickly bowed her head, afraid to see contempt from the traveler's eyes. This shame, mixed with fear, made her red-eyed and so sad that she almost cried.
"I’m sorry, I’m a monk," the traveler answered her.
Aya's heart retreated. Even a girl like her who lived in a remote tribe knew what this meant—he would not rush to get close to a girl, and would not do anything more than the moment before entering marriage. She should apologize and run away in shame.
But the fear of the future was forcing her. Her lips trembled and she desperately begged: "We could get married, I don't want gifts, I don't want rings... We could get married tonight, and you wouldn't have to visit me after tomorrow. Please, I don't want to... I don't want to..."
The traveler replied, "I’m sorry, I have a lover."
Aya began to cry, shaking with tears. She was jealous of the lucky girls in the tribe who could dance with their favorite boy on this beautiful night while she was locked in her room, waiting for fate. She had escaped, but where could she escape to? She couldn't cross the vast Sea of Tranquility desert, and could only go to the Underground Ant City—the hell on earth that frightened her. She doesn't have the strength of a bear, the sharpness of an eagle, or the agility of a monkey. How could an ordinary human girl survive there?
Everywhere was a dead end, and there was no glimmer of hope. She finally despaired, wiped her tears, and turned to walk towards the village. She had escaped on impulse, but now that she thought about it, there was nowhere to go. Why shouldn't she go back and accept her own destiny?
But the traveler stopped her: "Do you have some difficulties? Do you need my help?"
Aya stopped and turned to look at him. The traveler stood in the bright moonlight and watched her with gentle blue eyes. This stranger cared about her and worried about her pain. This thought makes Aya burst into tears. She couldn't wait to tell the whole of her grievances, but when she was stared at by such a pair of eyes, she couldn't say anything, she could only shed tears silently.
"Thank you... Sir... Thank you."
Amidst the joyful celebration, this tribal girl with honey skin told her story intermittently.
The Valentine tribe was a tribe that had migrated here from somewhere else. Unlike the aborigines with high noses, deep eyes, and white skin, they had a darker skin color and were not very tall. In addition, since they had come later, their relationship with other tribes was not harmonious and they even suffered from discrimination.
Demons always liked pure human girls. As the Dragon Ant Queen aged, she asked for more sacrifices. The secret of her bloody cruelty was circulated in the Sea of Tranquility desert—she drank great amounts of the blood of virgins in an attempt to stop the traces left by time. Aya, who had just become an adult, was chosen as the Valentine tribe’s tribute this year, and would be sent to the Dragon Ant Queen’s palace in the Underground Ant City. She didn't know if she would really face a bloodthirsty tyrant, but she knew that all the girls who were sent there had never come back.
Aya's mother died young and her father had been bewitched by a trader and became a believer in Utopia, leaving the tribe to pursue this dreamlike land of perfection. Left alone, Aya was brought up by the tribe on the condition that she would be a tribute for the tribe when she grew up.
Aya, who had no choice, grew up in fear. In order to keep her pure, the patriarch and the high priest had forbidden her from having contact with the opposite sex. She felt sincere envy and deep fear when she watched her peers walk into marriage one by one.
Finally, in this unattended bonfire festival, she was moved by the joy and excitement. She quietly escaped from the village and wanted to mix into the Underground Ant City to live out the rest of her days. Then she met someone who changed her life.
Now, she and this man were sitting on a low and easy-to-climb wind-eroded column, looking out over the bonfire in the distance.
She confided intermittently, confused for a while, self-pitying for a while, and sometimes even felt guilty: "Maybe I shouldn't have run away. If I leave, another girl will be sent there instead of me, and they don't want to do that... They should have a better life."
The traveler who had been silent until now told her: "No one should bear this pain, and neither should you."
Tears flowed from her dry eyes again and Aya choked: "But everyone doesn't think so. Since I’ve accepted the tribe’s support, I should repay them. This is a matter of course."
"It is an obligation to raise a child. It is unjust to ask her to repay this obligation with her life," said the traveler.
"It's not my fault? Isn't it because I’m too selfish?" Aya asked hopefully.
The traveler shook his head. "It's not your fault, nor is it anyone's fault."
"Whose fault is it then?" Aya was confused.
The traveler couldn't answer, and he was also thinking, if the world forced a warm and kind ethnic group to sell their own kind in exchange for surviving, whose fault was it?
"It's the Devils’ fault," the traveler said. "So we must destroy them and drive them back to the underworld, so that they will never come to this world."
"That's good. In this case, daddy wouldn't believe in any Utopia anymore? A world without demons itself is so beautiful. It’s a Utopia already. I want to live in such a world. Everything is good, perfect and the best," Aya said. Her poor vocabulary couldn't express the world in her heart. She can only describe it as "the best".
"What kind of world is it?" the traveler asked.
Aya thought hard and described the Utopia in her heart: "It must be an equal world. Besides human beings, there can also be demons that don't harm people... I heard that there are such demons in the Underground Ant City, and some even marry humans. If they don't harm us, I can accept their existence. No matter what kind of skin colour, like you or me, or whether we’re men or women, whether we have a faith or not, as long as we’re willing to be peaceful and friendly and not hurt each other, we should be equal and should be happy."
The traveler was surprised. He didn't expect an uneducated tribal girl to have such a mind and ideal, which made his heart that was blindly hostile to all demons ashamed.
Aya couldn't help but smile when she thought about such a world: "It would be great if I could live in a world like that."
With that, she smiled again and sighed softly: "What’s the point in dreaming of such ideals? We don't even know if we can survive the next evil tide... There will always be some demons fleeing to the surface each month during those days. Last month, they ate five sheep that belonged to the patriarch's family and they’ve eaten people before."
Aya asked, "I heard that monks like you can do magic spells. Can you do that?"
"I don't have that kind of power, but I have the Lord in my heart." The traveler replied that he had faith even though he had been exiled.
"Would believing in the Lord make me as smart and powerful as you? Can I also believe?" Aya asked uneasily.
The traveler handed her a heavy book as an answer.
Aya held the book carefully, for fear that her hands would ruin the precious book. She looked at the words on the cover and sounded it out with difficulty: "The Canon, is that how you read it?"
She only knew some simple words and feared that she would remember wrong. After flipping through the pages, she was embarrassed to find that she couldn't read even half of the contents.
"This is what my mother left me, and now I will give it to you," said the traveler.
Aya closed the book in a panic, threw it back, and hit the traveler in the waist with it. He groaned and his face suddenly turned pale.
"Are you okay? Did I hurt you? Sorry, I’m sorry!" Aya apologized fearfully, and she was so anxious that her tears fell down.
"It doesn't matter, it's a previous injury." Although the traveler looked haggard, he had a calm expression, as if the wound on his body was really just a minor injury. He put the book back in Aya's hands. "It doesn't matter. I memorized this book very young. If it can help you, it has value."
He didn't think it was a pity to give the Canon to a girl who couldn't even recognize its words. Moreover, the place where he was going was dangerous, and the result of going was that he might be left sleeping in the ground forever. If he let her go back with this Canon, at least the tribe wouldn't blame her for her escape.
There was a kind seed in her heart. Whether she believed it or not, she should be treated well.
"Thank you, really thank you." Aya thanked him repeatedly and was overwhelmed with joy when she held the book.
During this bonfire festival that she wasn’t allowed to attend, she had still received a gift. Maybe the traveler didn't know the meaning of the gift, but it still made her jump secretly. There was a happy bird singing in her heart, almost flying out of her chest.
But he had a lover. Aya bowed her head sadly, trying to hide her sour mood. With her head bowed, she opened the book and read the words by the moonlight, secretly blushing: "Love is... is..."
"Love is patient, love is kind," the traveler told her the pronunciation.
This heartfelt statement made her emotion surge. She seemed to be inspired by fate and bravely continued to read: "Love does not... what?"
The traveler told her slowly, "Love does not envy."
Aya's hand stroking the pages froze, and her foolish longing turned into full loss and self-mockery, which finally made her thoughtful.
Love is not envy. Aya silently read this sentence in her mind. Don't be envious of the girls who can dance with their sweethearts, and don't be envious of strangers who care about their loved ones. It was not her love.
The bonfire in the distance had become faint, the voice of celebration had gradually lowered, and the festival had come to an end.
Aya held the book and whispered, "I want to go home."
The traveler said, "I can take you to the Ant City and help you settle down."
"No, I’m willing to go back. Thank you," Aya said. "But before you go, can I talk to you for a while? We can talk about anything."
The traveler promised her.
Aya talked happily about the past, and stopped talking about the fear that made her feel miserable and helpless. Instead, she talked about the interesting things she’d encountered. She had been so angry when the bucket was pushed into the well by the sheep when she had been fetching water that she’d chased after the sheep. She had burned her hand when she was making naan and the neighbour's boy had helped her fetch water to cool it down. After listening to the traders talking about the outside world, she had learned that there was a place called the Vatican. She was excited to talk about all these interesting things, because she didn't think the traveler was happy. She wanted him to be happy, and she also wanted to know about his past, even if it was just his name.
But the traveler was always a silent listener, and he had no intention of telling his own story.
She didn't know where he came from, what kind of pain and despair he had experienced, why there was such a gentle sadness in his body, and what kind of person he carefully sheltered in his heart.
But the traveler didn't say anything. He didn't say anything.
Late at night, the young girl was very tired and sleepy. She murmured and asked, "Where is your lover? Where did she go?"*
*{E/N: he and she are pronounced the same in Chinese}
The traveler replied, "He is always in my heart."
Aya couldn't tell whether this is what the traveler said or what she dreamed. She fell asleep with the book as her pillow, and the traveler took the liberty of taking the strange girl back to the village. He covered her with a blanket, sat next to her to watch over her, and went nearby to find some dry wood to raise the fire and warm her.
The traveler himself didn't sleep. He waited for the rising sun and then quietly left to continue his journey.
Before the start of this journey, he actually hadn't had many opportunities to watch the sunrise, as he couldn't see it in the Village of Dusk. When he’d moved to Neverland, he had spent half a year under the eternally starry sky. When he was on tasks outside, he was in a hurry and didn't have the mind to wait for a sunrise. In fact, he didn't have any attachment to the sunrise. If his lover was still there, it would be beautiful for them to watch the sunset together. The sunset never fell in the land of Dusk. They could sit side by side on the beach, holding hands and watching the end of time.
He wanted to take him to the snow-capped mountains to see if the snow leopard he had once treated still occupied the mountains, where there was a beautiful waterfall and ice lake and the frozen blue-green water amidst the ice and snow made the mountain as beautiful as a fairy tale. He also wanted to take him to the polar regions to see penguins. They could even adopt an abandoned baby penguin, feed it, and watch it stagger on the ice until it was strong enough to return to the colony.
He had many, many things he wanted to do with him. Maybe he didn't want to do these things. Maybe he just wanted to be with him.
When people who love each other are together, they can feel each other's hearts even if they don't say a word.
But if the distance was between life and death, could these thoughts reach the other side of the Styx?
The traveler watched the sun rising over the horizon, and his heart was at peace. He was like a boat drifting from one port to another. He may encounter storms along the way, but when the boat arrived at the harbor, he would still feel lucky and never feel dismayed.
He never felt that he should take happiness for granted. His decision with his faith was not to seek happiness, but to let his heart find peace, even if he was punished for it.
It was better to suffer frankly than to live falsely. He knew that he wouldn't run away. He had made a mistake and did not repent, so he should be punished. For him, such punishment was not pain, but atonement. All the sufferings in this world were to redeem the original sin that he was born with, and he had to pay for it with his whole life.
At dawn, Aya woke up from her sleep. She was covered with a blanket and didn't know when the bonfire before her had been lit. There were still faint flames swaying in the wind, but the traveler had left.
Aya grabbed the blanket, picked up the book, and ran to the village in a hurry. The rocks and thorns along the way made her run too fast, and she accidentally fell to the ground.
She couldn't care less about herself and picked up the Canon, only to find that a piece of paper had fallen from its pages.
She picked up the paper and turned it over. It was a hand-painted portrait of a handsome young man smiling at her.
There was a name in the corner, which should be the name of the person in the portrait. It was very simple, and she could easily read it out even if she couldn't read much. She gently said: "Qi Leren."
It was just an ordinary name, but the tender brushwork on the portrait made her voice go soft unconsciously. She wanted to take a closer look and feel the overflowing tenderness, but a gust of wind blew from the desert, violently and rapidly, and took the portrait from her unsuspecting hand, blowing it into the clear sky above the vast yellow sand.
The sand flying in the wind overwhelmed Aya's eyes. She waved her arms wildly in confusion, but she could only grasp the yellow sand in her hands. When she opened her misty eyes again, the portrait had been brought to the sky by the wind, fluttering and rootless, and was about to disappear into the heavens.
Aya chased it without thinking, racing the wind all the way. A great sadness filled her heart and a voice in her heart made her run, run, run desperately... She lost her shoes, her feet stepped on stones, and blood flowed, but the pain of her body could not overcome her inner sadness and she still dared not stop, she wanted to catch what was about to be lost—until she tripped over thorns and fell heavily to the earth.
She fell in such pain that she fell to her knees and cried. Her feet had already been cut bloody, her knees were scraped open, and she was bleeding. Even her hands were full of cuts. She shrank back and wanted to give up, but she looked up and looked into the distance unwillingly.
The wind was blowing again, and a gust of wind sent that thin piece of paper to an unknown distance. Such a large desert, such a small piece of paper. In an instant there was no trace of it, only the vast yellow sand and blue sky.
Who was the man in that picture? Aya would never know.
It was doomed to be unknown, impossible to find and impossible to obtain.
And how could the emotion carried on the delicate paper withstand the relentless sand in the desert?
It would eventually be destroyed, buried and forgotten.
Aya was stupefied and kneeling in the hot sun, with mottled blood all the way behind her showing that she had made an almost crazy effort for a story with no answer. Her eyes, which were filled with the wind and sand, kept shedding tears, but they couldn't wash away the hard sand in her soft eyes. It seemed that something sharp was stuck in her heart, so sharp and painful, but she didn't know what it was.
She didn't know anything.
Sadness and melancholy suddenly welled up in the girl's heart and she burst into tears on this barren land, for a stranger whose name she didn’t know, for a stranger who only knew her name.

Editor’s Notes: After checking three different mtls (my number has gone up again oh dear), I’ve determined that BMBL calls the book the Bible in the original Chinese. I’ve chosen to translate it as Canon in order to distinguish it, as BMBL has stated previously (and will again later) that, despite being very similar, the religion in this series is not Christianity.
I think this chapter is the first time I’ve cried a bit while editing. I encourage everyone to come back and read this little interlude again once you’ve finished all of Part II, there’s quite a bit that hits differently.
I’m going to be taking a one week break while we’re between arcs in order to do some catching up, so the next chapter will be up on June 18th.

A to Z of LynnCove: E is for Eternity
A quick look at a bright future
This was supposed to be posted yesterday but I had a bit of a panic attack so that did not happen :] Sorry about that!! Here’s a long one to make up for it <3
-------------------------------------------------
Even though it was his day off, Cove still woke up to his alarm in the morning. He wasn’t a natural morning person, and needed the extra push in order to wake up most mornings. The sun filtered in through the semi-opaque curtains of his bedroom, and the 25 year old man groaned softly as he moved to turn his alarm off and grab his glasses. Just as soon as he slipped them on his face, did the sliding barn door to the bedroom open to an eager little Chesapeake Bay Retriever that bounded over to him and licked at the free hand that laid off the side of the bed.
“Well good morning to you too, Fleche.” Cove hummed and petted the not-quite puppy , but not quite an adult dog, her coat was soft yet a little wet, as Fleche was a very messy eater.  At the little girl’s insistence, Cove swung his legs over the edge of the bed and stood up, stretching in the light of the summer sun after he opened the curtains. Just as he stood up, the smell of breakfast cooking reached Cove’s nose. “Ah. So this is what you were sent here to do. Already had your breakfast, little girl?” Fleche pushed against Cove’s legs, not even looking up at him to answer his question.
The house he lived in at age 25 was nothing short of beautiful. A small beach house right close to the water, it was like something out of a dream when he found it. Gorgeous wood floors, an overall hawaiian feeling to it (for being in southern california) and the best view ever…. Well, the beach was good too.
[Rest Under the Cut]
His view, though, came in the form of a person’s back being turned to him as they stood in the kitchen, cooking breakfast. Tall and angular, the years had been very kind to them, and their hair was long and in its natural color, a warm brown. There was a tattoo on their left calf of a crab surrounded by poppies, one that matched his own of a dolphin that resided on his lower back. They didn’t hear him coming, but Cove wasn’t one for pulling pranks, that thankfully, was his spouse’s forte. Cove walked up behind them, gently wrapping large arms around their waist and nuzzling his face in their hair.
“Good Morning sleepyhead.” They spoke, not turning their head to look over at him.
“ Mornin’ Lynn.” Cove returned, pressing a kiss to his spouse’s cheek.
Lynn and Cove had changed a lot over the years in terms of likes and appearances. Lynn, who had once been asked to model thanks to their beautiful and femmine figure, was now a lot more androgynous after some soul searching, and a wonderful support network. Cove fit the more masculine look, and looked a lot more like his father, but that same look betrayed his soft and shy personality.
“What are you making?” Cove asked after Lynn turned to look back at him and to get a kiss. Lynn smiled warmly as they turned back to the pan, and what was cooking inside it.
“Pancakes. I made some separate ones for me, these are your pancakes.” Cove had only been half-listening after they mentioned that they made pancakes, the hungry thoughts of food filling his mind as he let go of his spouse.
“I’ll set the table. What do you want to drink?” Cove asked, rubbing his eyes with a wide yawn. Lynn shrugged as they flipped one of the pancakes.
“Orange juice sounds good.” Lynn said nonchalantly, to which Cove nodded and grabbed the bottle from their fridge, which was decorated with many tourist magnets as well as photos, ads, and sticky notes.
Sooner, breakfast was finished cooking. Lynn served Cove’s plate first, and then their own at their small nook that served as their dining table. Fleche had run off to nap in a sunny spot on the couch, their living area being an open floor plan. The two of them weren’t perfect, as many people seemed to still believe, but they worked well and communicated with each other - which led to such a strong relationship. They had their own things that they did, and own friends, but they still did a lot together as a couple - one thing they loved doing, even now, was going for a surf on their days off. Cove wanted to ask Lynn if they were up to the idea.
“Are you up for surfing today, husband?” Lynn asked, as though they’d read Cove’s mind. A mischievous smile danced on their lips, and Cove wasn’t sure if they could...or if they were just messing with him, but he felt like they knew.
“Yes.”He squeaked out, a blush appearing on his features.
The topic soon, even though it was their day off, developed into talking about work. At age 25, Cove was a chef and organizer for a local charity kitchen. It wasn’t a glamorous job, certainly, but it was one that he enjoyed doing. People loved him, and he was able to talk easier with the vulnerable people he taught to cook. Lynn’s hard work their entire life paid off, and they were a zookeeper, taking care of marine animals at the zoo’s aquarium. Their work and his helped pay for their gorgeous house, and dog.. And the nice set of savings for when they would try for children.
The trip to the beach was as mundane as it always was, but for the two of them - every moment was magical as they ran around the water near their home. Fleche loved to play fetch with them when they went out on their surfboards, she could swim really far and would bring back the frisbee they threw each time. Fleche was also a very good girl as well, when they set her back on land and went at it surfing; the waters near their home were a prime spot for waves but were unknown except for by the locals. There was a kid that always came by to watch them, and the two of them often joked how much it was like they were already parents.
After coming home from the beach and taking a shower, the couple split off and would do their own things on their day off. For Cove it consisted of testing a new muffin recipe that he wanted to surprise Lynn with, as well as getting in a few chapters of his new book, and watering the plants they were growing on their porch. For Lynn, their free time consisted of watching a new soccer match, a few crosswords during lulls in the game, working more on a painting they were doing, and unfortunately answering emails as the newest intern was a complete klutz but Lynn was very very patient.
That night was time though for the two of them to get dressed up for a joint-family dinner. The Holdens and The Chos started it after Lynn went off for college and Cove moved out, though the individual families would still have separate dinners from time to time. It was much better with everyone though. Kyra still lived in Nevada, working ever hard on her writing - she had a boyfriend recently though, last time Cove and Lynn saw her. As for Mr. Holden, he’d gotten married the last summer, to a lovely woman named Aya who owned a flower shop, but Cove was still not sure about her. Mom and Ma were doing really well for themselves, taking it easy but still being the life of their country club. As for Lizzie… well, as much as Lynn’s older sister loved to joke about her lil sibling doing all the big milestones before her, there was one thing that she didn’t count on. Lizzie had a kid, and with her oldest friend no less. Shiloh and Lizzie had met again after that awkward encounter, and he’d apologized to her, with real feelings. They weren’t married yet or anything but things were going well for them, and they’d had a kid. Bertie, who was three. Lynn loved the little guy, and even though Cove and Shiloh were still awkward around each other as ever - the Holden-Cho family was good.
“Do you have the thing you told Ma you’d bring?” Lynn waved their hand over to Cove who laughed as he took a container out of the fridge.
“Of course. I made sure to tell Claude that she liked it so much when she came to visit. And yes, he promised to stop hitting on her.” He responded to his spouse’s question, watching as they slid earrings in while grabbing their keys. Lynn stopped short before doing anything else , feeling their husband’s eyes on their back the entire time.
“Can I help you, Mr. Holden?” Lynn’s face split into a sly, seductive smirk. Cove bit his lip as he went to grab his coat from the counter barstool.
“Why no, Mx.Holden, I was just admiring my ravishing spouse. You never cease to amaze me.” He mumbled as he closed the distance to them, Lynn using their hands to move his to their waist.
“And you never cease to be the cheesiest man alive. You’ve got to stop hanging out with those boys.” Lynn’s words were drawn from their lips as Cove pressed a kiss to them. No makeup, but lip balm this night.  Cove pressed another kiss, and then another to his spouse’s lips, before pressing their foreheads together with a happy, contented sigh.
“Normally I love being home with our families, but..”
“But..?”
“But I’d rather much take you back to our bedroom and show you how much I appreciate you.”
Lynn laughed at that and pulled away, heading to the shoe rack and front door.
“Come on handsome. I’ll let you show me later tonight.” Lynn slid some cute flats on, their slender fingers brushing against the anklet around their … well, ankle. Before heading for the door, Lynn shot a look back at their blushing husband, whose hands were empty.
“Don’t forget the food.”

ONEWE - Kanghyun
fluff
you panted as you reached in front of your now new home with your heavy luggage.
due to your current project, it was easier for you to move somewhere closer to your work place. you found a perfect place.
a boarding house. the rent was just nice and the reviews were quite good too.
"ah y/n ! welcome! i am Yonghoon, the one you contacted through Instagram.". a tall guy greeted you with a wide smile.
you greeted him back and walked towards him with your belongings.
Yonghoon helped you out with your things and invited you in.
"you can take your shoes off here and wear any of the slippers. anything that you're comfortable with.".
you thanked him and followed Yonghoon in.
the boarding house had two levels. 2 rooms in level one together with the kitchen and living room. it was quite spacious. level 2 had 4 rooms.
you were relieved because Yonghoon gave you the room with its own bathroom. he said they usually prioritised ladies for those rooms.
as Yonghoon explained, there were currently 5 people living there, including you. 3 guys and 2 ladies.
"I'm the oldest, Aya is a year younger than me but i'm sure you could get along well with her. Harin is the same age as you, and also-- ahh!! speaking of the devil! Hyungu, come here and greet our new housemate!". Yonghoon cut his own introduction as the named boy entered the house.
Hyungu blinked in confusion as he walked towards the older guy and you.
the moment he saw you, Hyungu looked at you from head to toe and frowned. he only bowed a little and excused himself back into his room upstairs.
you gulped and looked down. *i have an enemy here already?*. you thought.
you quickly looked up when you heard Yonghoon chuckle.
"don't worry, Hyungu is just really shy and awkward. he doesn't really know how to act around people he is not close to,". Yonghoon explained.
you only nodded and persuaded yourself to feel comforted.
~
it's been almost 2 weeks since you've stayed in the warm boarding house. just like Yonghoon said, you get along well with Aya.
she was so happy when she heard they were going to get another lady housemate. Aya treated you like her own younger sister.
it's only been a while but Aya had been pampering you with food and invited you to go shopping with her where she would actually pay for your things too. Aya was that happy to have you.
you also became closer with Harin because of your same age. Harin was very friendly and welcoming. if you'd known each other sooner, the both of you probably would have been bestfriends.
Yonghoon was like the dad of the family, he made you feel secure in the cozy house.
that leaves you one more person. i mean housemate. Kang Hyungu.
you've tried talking to him during breakfast and dinner but he would always respond with body language or give you short answers.
Hyungu would always look down everytime he encountered you.
you didn't know what you did wrong but you really wanted to be friends with him. so you tried hard .
"Hyungu... would you like some coffee?".
**shakes his head**
"Hyungu, do you know where the vacuum is?".
**points to the store room**
"Hyungu.... do you like flowers?".
**nods**
"oohh, which flowers?".
"cherry blossoms."
you were so happy when you heard his voice. although it was short, he still talked.
you thought you've finally made progress.....
"Hyungu, do you want to go grocery shopping with me and Harin?". you asked softly as you approached Hyungu who was playing with his phone at the dining table.
Hyungu shook his head and quickly stood up to go back to his room.
you pouted and wanted to go tell Harin but you stopped on your tracks when you heard Harin's laugh.
his voice came closer to the kitchen and soon you saw Harin walking towards you with an arm wrapped around Hyungu's shoulder.
"he is coming with us whether he wants to or not! you eat here too so you have to help out in some ways, Hyungu..". Harin nagged in a friendly tone.
Hyungu only held his head down and nodded weakly.
you smiled and clapped your hands like a little kid. it was the first time for the three of you to hang out together. it was always you and Harin or Harin and Hyungu.
you really hoped you could get closer to Hyungu during this short trip.
to your dismay, Hyungu walked beside you quietly while Harin, as usual, talked to you about everything he could think of on the way to the market.
you had fun because of Harin but you still tried to think of ways to talk to Hyungu too.
"ah Hyungu, remember when we bought your first guitar together?". Harin suddenly asked Hyungu as he was talking to you about being a music teacher at an academy.
you thanked Harin mentally for asking Hyungu something. you faced Hyungu, anticipating his answer.
"yeah, it was chaotic. you tried to argue that the more expensive guitar was better than the guitar i bought. you really wanted me to go broke that day...".
you chuckled and shook your head. the two boys' friendship was really funny. you would listen to Harin blabber about memories of him and Hyungu.
you can't help but blush when you heard Hyungu talk for more than 2 seconds.
his voice was so soothing. it was one of the most beautiful sounds to listen to. greedy for more, you tried asking some questions too.
"woahh, how many guitars do you have now?".
Hyungu continued looking front and held up 3 fingers.
you 'ooh'ed and refrained yourself from being sad at the way he responded.
the walk back home was the same. Harin would do the talking while Hyungu was quiet and would talk only when Harin asked something.
your heart felt really heavy when you reached home. you wanted get closer to Hyungu but it felt like the both of you became more distant.
it was bothering you even after dinner. so you decided to rant out your feelings to Harin.
you sat on the floor with Harin in his room, which was next to yours.
"i don't know Harin. i just want to be friends. i don't know what i did wrong but he had been giving me the cold shoulder since the first time we met. *gasps*. do i look like his ex girlfriend or something? help me Harinnnn,". you complained.
Harin only chuckled and ruffled your hair while you pouted.
"Hyungu is just.... shy, okay? he sucks at making friends. he is stuck with me because he obviously can't live without me. i mean, have you seen him try ordering food for himself?? that kid is a mess.".
you only glared at Harin for not making you feel any better. Harin grinned and held his arms up.
"alright alright, but for real. Hyungu is a shy and awkward dude. he doesn't have any ex girlfriends so that's not it. hmmmm ah! maybe he is just shy to look at you? i mean, you're pretty cute.".
you rolled your eyes and pulled your legs up as you buried your face in between your knees. at other times you would blush but it wasn't a good time for you to be flattered.
you immediately looked up when Harin started laughing like a maniac.
"now i know the real reason!!". he exclaimed.
you blinked and tried to process Harin's words.
Harin just realised that all these while, you were wearing the purple slippers. Hyungu's purple slippers. Hyungu's favourite purple slippers.
probably that was why the first thing Hyungu did when he met you was scanning you from head to toe.
Hyungu would always look down when he sees you was probably him staring longingly at his precious slippers.
Hyungu was probably too embarrassed to tell you about the slippers because you seemed comfortable wearing them and he didn't want to be inconsiderate to you.
but all that still didn't explain why Hyungu wouldn't talk to you. so you had a plan. to try and find out his reasons. you've had enough and it was reaching your limit. you hated having enemies.
~
Hyungu opened his door slowly when he heard a knock.
he blinked in confusion when there was no one outside. but something on the floor caught his eyes.
his favourite purple slippers.
Hyungu squatted and picked up the note that was left on his slippers.
< meet me at the rooftop >
~
"beautiful isn't it? the stars..". you softly said as you admired the twinkling sky.
Hyungu walked calmly towards you and tucked his hands into his pockets.
"hmm". he hummed, enjoying the cool breeze.
"say Hyungu, why do you hate me?". you asked as you turned to face him.
you swore you saw panic in his eyes.
Hyungu for the first time, turned to look at you.
your face heated up at the sudden eye contact. Hyungu's ears turned red too.
"i--i d-don't....". he quietly replied.
you frowned and stepped closer towards Hyungu.
"i'm sorry i took your favourite slippers. but i'm sure you wouldn't ignore me or give me the cold shoulder just because of that, right? or are you.. really that uhm.... petty?".
Hyungu gulped and quickly shook his head no.
he rubbed his nape before taking in a big breath.
"i--i'm sorry for making you feel like that . yeah i'm kind of embarrassed to speak up about the slippers but i really don't mind as long as you are comfortable. i'm sorry if you felt as if i ignored you. i'm just really awkward and suck at conversations so i'd rather reply directly before i make things worse. i know this sounds like an excuse but i'm really just a mess, okay?". you blinked at his long explanation and was about to reply but his next words stopped you.
"be--besides, i'm really shy to look at you directly because you are really, very beautiful.". Hyungu shyly confessed.
you forcefully gulped your almost non-existent saliva and got yourself back together.
"so... you don't hate me?". you asked carefully.
Hyungu pouted and shook his head.
you smiled widely before laughing your heart out happily. Hyungu flashed a smile too as he saw your happy face.
"it's okay Hyungu if you're awkward. we can always try and get to know each other better in different ways. but don't ignore me, okay? i really want to be close friends with you.". you said and patted Hyungu's head.
Hyungu nodded like a little kid and held his pinky out.
"i promise.". he cutely said.
you scrunched up your nose at his actions and ruffled his hair.
you went to the rooftop door and turned back around before exiting.
"so the purple slippers? i'll give it back to you!". you teased and winked before leaving Hyungu alone on the flowery rooftop.
Hyungu watched your back go and chuckled to himself.
*to another journey of making a friend.* he thought to himself as he looked up to the beautiful sky.

Day 6, (Paris: Downtown; Place de la République, Place de la Bastille, Palais-Royal, Pont Alexandre III, Eiffel Tower, Gare de Lyon), 30-9-2019
Written by Ahmed Hassan, edited and corrected by Aya Ashraf.
I just woke up and it’s my last day in Paris. That feeling is always aching my soul yet I always plan to have all of the new places right after Paris just to feel less pain leaving this city behind. Today I’m doing nothing except visit some new places I haven’t visited before, meet a friend from Brazil and then start preparing for my departure to Italy.
I started moving from home at around 7:30 AM, It was that early because I wanted to say a fine goodbye to the city. For a change, I wanted to try taking the bus to the City, discover how it feels going through the suburbs of Paris to reach the city. Took a bus near the Aulnay-sous-Bois train station and switched for another bus till I reached my first destination; Place de la République.
Tumblr media
At the center of the square is a bronze statue of Marianne, the personification of the French Republic. The square is well known for being a protesting spot as it can contain large numbers without severely affecting traffic.
I proceeded to Place de la Bastille, another spot I wanted to visit, the place is another square centered by July column, topped by a gold Génie de la Liberté.
Tumblr media
The Bastille square in Paris is where the Bastille prison stood until the storming of the Bastille and its destruction during the French Revolution, and with no remains in sight at the moment.
I started moving by bus to Gare du Nord. A very interesting benefit of having a free day without itinerary is how free it feels to switch to buses or walking instead of quicker transportation methods like trains and metros. It gives you that feeling of being a resident for a while, even if it was only for a couple of minutes. One of the priceless benefits of travelling is remaining silent, observing and actually listening to nothing but street noises. I can’t remember that I’ve put headphones and listened to a song during the 33 days I’ve been outside Egypt. You don’t need to escape anything anymore, you’re just there to feel and enjoy the moment, and be proud of the present that’s happening and achieving everything you’ve ever planned and dreamed of.
Trying to waste time before meeting a Brazilian friend of mine, I had another walk from Gare du Nord. I passed by Église Saint-Vincent-de-Paul, the scene looked cinematic; people were sitting on the stairs leading to the building entrance in the middle of a Parisian street, and behind them a very symmetrical building of the church itself.
Tumblr media
I continued my long walk and passed by the Opera again, nothing looks the same when you’re saying goodbye. I mean, I still remember how it felt leaving Paris the year before. The feeling is indescribable when you’re looking at anything knowing it’s the last time to do so. The image below might seem like a regular picture of a street in Paris, but it was me observing that golden statues, street noises and beautiful buildings for the last time for a long time.
Tumblr media
In realization that I’m closer to visiting Palais-Royal, I started moving to the Palace to check another place I’ve never visited. Palais-Royal is a former French royal palace, and now it’s the headquarter of Ministry of Culture, the Conseil d'État and the Constitutional Council.
Tumblr media
The Palace is famous for tourists for Les Deux Plateaux, which are rows of columns with different heights put in an old parking lot. The columns were put in this place between 1986 and 1985, and it’s been a touristic spot since then.
Tumblr media
I mean come on, this looks like fun!
Tumblr media
The palace also features very fine gardens, which I like to describe as gardens inside a building inside a city.
Tumblr media
And like Versailles, the gardens had this set of trees aligned in a very symmetrical scene.
Tumblr media
I was about to leave the palace, but couldn’t do it before stealing another symmetrical shot. (Okay it’s not very symmetrical and i’m personally hurt the lanterns aren’t perfectly aligned lol)
Tumblr media
Moving on, the Palace’s exit was right in front of the Louvre’s side entrance. And no matter how stunning and breathtaking the main entrance with the pyramid looks, the side entrance fits the authenticity and classic side of the Louvre.
Tumblr media
I started walking along the Seine, Moving towards Châtelet. I passed by Pont Neuf, Notre Dame, Fountain Saint-Michel, Hôtel de Ville, Centre Pompidou and ending my long walk at Les halls, the famous mall in Châtelet. I had a fast meal at a Burger King nearby, then started moving again to the Louvre.
The sky was very colorful and a bit clear that day, I had an amazing time sitting near the fountain of Jardin des tuileries. A fountain, ducks, fine architecture, good sky view, all in an indescribable harmony creating a scene I’ll never forget.
Tumblr media
I finally received a notification of the arrival of Samuel, that Brazilian friend i’m meeting. We’ve met on Couchsurfing and agreed to tour the city together. He had just arrived from Madrid to Paris so he depended on me to show him around. In one trip, I showed the city to two people who briefly described me as a “local” because of the way I fully memorized city information like the landmarks and the streets.
We met and started to introduce each others, he started complementing my Instagram posts and telling me he’s been dying to see Paris the way I show it in my pictures. I was extremely happy because I’m someone who’s very proud of his Instagram account, I count it as one of my strongest assets of memory preservation. When I introduce or share this account with people, I always tend to mention that it’s like a museum for Ahmed Hassan, as my photographs capture my timeline for the past few years, showing the development of tastes and interests, also what i’ve lived, witnessed and documented during this time.
Continuing our conversation about pictures, Samuel asked me to photograph him near the Louvre. He was amazed of how he pays no effort in explaining what exactly he needs to see in the captured photos. We started discussing various topics like cultural difference, travelling and photography. Samuel wanted to visit the Eiffel tower so bad and start posing for photos next to it. He asked me for good shots for it, I suggested we take a walk along the Seine, crossing Pont Alexandre lll, passing by Les Invalides till hitting Champs de Mars right behind Eiffel Tower.
The below photo was the last photo I took for the Louvre, It was me saying goodbye to on of my favorite places on earth.
Tumblr media
Moving from the Louvre, we walked and talked along the Seine, capturing some fine scenery for the landmarks, showing it all like a postcards you wanna receive so bad.
Below is Musée d'Orsay
Tumblr media
Pont de la Concorde
Tumblr media
And finally one of the best -and saddest- pictures ever, a sunset in Paris. Why saddest? It’s my last sunset there. It looks like an oil painting that has a presence that never fades, or even fails to remind you of what you’ve felt taking such picture.
Tumblr media
We passed by Pont Alexandre lll, and the bridge never fails to be impressive at any time of the day. The timing was perfect because we got to capture a golden bridge under golden weather.
Tumblr media
It’s my favorite bridge in Paris, and It never fails to remind me of the first time I recognized it in Adele’s “Someone like you” music video. I’m no drama queen, or maybe sometimes I am haha, but I slightly felt the same that day walking there, and yeah, nothing is the same when you’re saying goodbye. I’m intending to describe more on that matter, you feel like you’re aching in a way that doesn’t show a physical pain, everything you’re hearing sounds the same, yet you feel it’s distorted. It’s complicated, Anyway, here’s another picture of the bridge capturing Les Invalides.
Tumblr media
Moving forward, He asked for amazing places to capture the Eiffel tower inside the city itself, so I suggested the below location I initially used for my Trip in 2018.
Tumblr media
We continued walking towards Champs de Mars and when we arrived, Samuel was astonished of how the tower looks marvelous the closer you get closer, we arrived there a few minutes before it got all lit so we captured both moments.
Tumblr media
And same way with the lights starting to glow
Tumblr media
We got closer for a better shot, and captured one of my finest Eiffel tower photos ever!
Tumblr media
We again moved to the Seine to pass to Trocadéro to capture my last photo of the tower, which started to light in purple in solidarity with Breast Cancer Awareness Month that occurs annually in October.
Tumblr media
So, That was it. I said goodbye to Samuel as I had to move to prepare my luggage and head towards Gare de Lyon for my 6 AM train, which was pretty early to be there almost 7 hours before the train, but me and Mohamed thought it should be better for him not to pay another night for a few hours, and it was risky to depend on getting there on time less than one hour after the public transportation starts the next day.
On my way to Islem’s home though, I was stopped in the metro station and got fined 35 Euros for violating the Metro’s rules of having an image and a name on my transportation Card, the whole situation didn’t make my Paris ending any prettier, It was scary and worrying being stopped by metro officials, yet I gotta admit it was my fault as I was notified I should update both the photo and the name 5 days earlier.
Arriving at Islem’s, My luggage was Pre-Packed, I just showered and collected my belongings and started moving, I thanked Islem for his GREAT hospitality for the second year in a row! It was almost 11 PM when I started moving, I stopped and took a last look at the house before for my last RER ride to Gare de Lyon.
Tumblr media
I arrived at Gare de Lyon, Mohamed arrived a couple of minutes after. We were ready for our more than 6 hours time of waiting. We tried to discover the station, discovering that, obviously, every single shop or store is closed. The only available items to purchase are the snacks of the vending machines. The only thing that broke the silence that night is a man playing piano closer to midnight.
Tumblr media
We stayed and talked about what we’ve progressed so far in the trip, which is completely nothing to what’s coming up a head, before we were ordered by station security to exit the station as the station is “Closing” till the morning. That was another bullet to my head that night. We roamed the scary streets surrounding the station at night searching for any café or restaurant that might be working after midnight with no luck, we even tried our luck with fancy hotels like Holiday Inn to try and stay for a drink or something in the lobby which was refused as well. It was a scary couple of minutes before we decided to head up to the Station’s door and try our luck again, The security asked us to come back in and wait for the train as he’s been searching for us for a while to tell us to get back inside. We were a bit relieved knowing that we’ll be in a safer situation, we faced another hazard of creepy Algerians who were roaming the station searching for a cigarette or a lighter to smoke weed. We ran into a Brazilian guy  and his dad. They only spoke Portuguese so I used google translate to communicate. They were both heading to another French city and they were terrified by the creepy Algerians roaming the station. We stayed together for an hour or two, talked for a while. I gave him a souvenir of an Egyptian coin which he was crazy about given the fact that he was a coin collector.
Tumblr media
It was finally around 5 AM when we noticed that our train was already in the station since before midnight, not ready to be entered though but we were finally that close. The doors are finally opened near 6 AM and we got on, in separate cars unfortunately but still, safer than ever.
Before the train moves, I wanted to take a moment to appreciate the Paris effect it has on me for the second year in a row now. The city attracts my senses and brings out the best of me, I’m thankful for it as it captured my first experience as a tourist the year before, and it’s the only city I visited twice, and intending to include in every Europe trip I’m intending to pursue. The city also confirmed and enriched my passion for architecture and art. Unlike most Egyptians, I don’t find it an ordinary “overrated” city, I find the streets talking with history and beauty, the bakeries are running and keeping history of recipes, preserving a significant European cuisine. The fact that I remember leaving the city in the two years I visited leaves me speechless. In both trips, Paris was the start of my tour, and even though it was followed by GREAT cities and countries after, It still doesn’t feel the same.
The train started moving and I finally felt safe and calm enough to sleep, The ride takes around 7 hours to Milan. I tried to ditch the previous night away and think about the amazing Italy adventure coming up ahead, the first country I’ve ever wanted to visit. I napped for an hour or two before the Police officers started passing and checking our passports, it’s a normal procedure for intercountry trains or transportation in general. Everything is going well and smooth now, Let’s hit Italy!
Self reflection:
I’m finalizing this blog post on October 9th from Egypt’s North Coast, nearly after three months of not blogging because of the heavy work load I have. And even though it’s all still packed with no time to take a proper break, I found a way to return and preserve moments like this because it’s all still there. Once I started writing, it took me less than a day to finalize the whole post.
So, hmm, a self reflection. I’m currently unaware of my feelings towards anything, I feel better than the last time I blogged, but I currently have a general understanding that everything isn’t worth the effort of thinking anymore. That doesn’t mean I’m not thinking anymore, Haha -I wish though-. by going through 2020, I’m developing weird facts about how everything should be understood and acted upon. Starting from relationships, work, personal spaces, caring, and everything. I feel like I’m still discovering these things for the first time, like a kid learning to walk in his first year. Nobody told me getting ready to turn into a 30 year old has a reset button of your whole belief system. You go through the same things you go through on daily basis, but with growing mind and easier letting go abilities. You go and evaluate friendships, actions, hobbies and whole life style, you check how responding differently can leave your mind in peace, how going an extra mile doesn’t always bring what you’ve been missing or expecting, how being a selfish person is not as bad as it’s been showed to us growing up.
Now we’re less than three months away from the end of 2020, I gotta say it’s still hurting me revealing all my scars at once to myself in one single year, and at the same time I’ve never been more thankful for such an evolution of thoughts in the same year. If I’m allowed to say a piece of non-cliché advice, I’d say go selfish to liberate yourself from the restrictions that keep you from discovering who you really am. Instead of unrolling yourself as a carpet for others to grow with whoever they wanna be, be your own red carpet.
Be your own superstar.

My Ai Yazawa Reccomendation List
This is a list that I’ve actually been thinking about for a while now (like... years lmao). Basically just a few of my personal recommendations of series (only manga and webtoons this time around but I have a couple tv shows and anime that I also might rec in a second list if people like this one...) that people like me that are missing Yazawa’s work might enjoy.  The bulk of this list is for NANA, because that is her unfinished work, but I’ve got quite a few recs for her other series.
I don’t love all the series on this list (or even like tbh), but I can see where someone who likes a certain aspect of Yazawa’s work might enjoy the series more than me.   I didn’t include trigger warnings because it’s been a number of years since I read some of these series (and some I never finished) but feel free to ask me and I’ll do my best.
Obligatory recommendation that if you enjoy any of Yazawa’s series, you should give any of her series a try.  I think all of the series that  I’ve read by her are masterpieces in their own right and if you’re missing NANA (or any of her other works) you should definitely read the rest of her work because many of my own favorite aspects of Yazawa’s works are present in all of her work - like female friendship and continuous story lines (rather than episodic).
Feel free to add on with your owns recs... And tell me if you read any of these series!
-
If you like the past/future mechanic of NANA with young adult characters and enjoy unveiling the mystery in Kagen no Tsuki  then give Piece by Ashihara Hinako a try.  The MC and her best friend have a good passing resemblance to Nana and Hachi, if Hachi were chubby but they have more than appearance in common with NANA’s leading ladies...  To say any more would be spoilers!  This series also marries some of the messy melodrama of RL with realism like NANA.
Tumblr media
Summary: One day, Mizuho, a university student, receives news that her classmate in high school, Origuchi Haruka, passed away. Mizuho doesn't remember being best friends with Origuchi, but apparently, Origuchi told her mother that Mizuho was her best friend. And now, her mother wants Mizuho to help her find the boy Origuchi dated during high school. Mizuho told Origuchi's mother that Origuchi was a very plain girl, and she was never seen with a guy, but her mother told Mizuho that Origuchi got pregnant and had an abortion when she was in high school. Mizuho was shocked, but she still starts asking her other classmates in high school and following the traces Origuchi left behind.

If you liked Paradise Kiss for the portrayal of a bunch of odd-balls coming together to do something creative together and inspiring Yukari with their passion OR for Yukari’s struggle with her mother academic expectations then you might enjoy the webtoon Spirit Fingers by Han Kyoung Chal!
Tumblr media
Summary:  What do you do if you're going on 18, totally awkward and lacking in self- confidence? You could just sit in your room all day and all night and study and wonder why you never get asked out…OR, if you’re Amy Song you could join up with the Spirit Fingers – the strangest, hippest, coolest (yet most welcoming) art club ever. But as Amy is about to learn, discovering your TRUE colors is about more than just painting.
Status: Complete, still being translated.  Best part is you can start reading the series completely LEGALLY here.  They changed the character’s first names to more western ones and it’s a bit behind the unofficial translations but I still recommend reading it legally.
-
If you liked NANA because you liked how the Nanas had the same name and had all these other similarities, meeting under fateful circumstances but also wish they’d date then give Lonely Wolf, Lonely Sheep a try by Fuka Mizutani!
Tumblr media
Summary:   Two women with the same name happens to meet each other when they're at the same hospital for the same injury. They want to become closer, but both must overcome their insecurities and self-loathing first.
Status: Complete
-
If you like the past/future telling aspect of NANA with a large, fully-fleshed cast of characters who are all living their life check out Cheese in the Trap by Soonkki.  Sul is a very strong, no- nonsense MC but with plenty of charm with great friends.  Like NANA it’s easy to hate some of the more flawed characters but at the end of the day even the antagonists have complex reasons for being the way they are and aren’t just living to be an opposing force.
Tumblr media
Summary:  Seol Hong is a hard-working student, who has returned to college after a long break. Jung Yu is a senior at the college known as Mr. Perfect. Seol feels like her life took a turn for the worse since she got involved with Jung. Is Jung intentionally turning Seol's life?
Status:  Ongoing... I think?  You can read the webtoon legally [here] and the translations are being posted weekly still at least.
-
Do you like younger looking characters like Mikako and Miwako?  Do you like playboys like George as a male lead but wish he were a bit more earnest?  Did you like how Akira and Midori took their time getting to know and understand each other by the end of the series?  Do you just like how Yazawa emphasizes friendship in her work?  Here’s Lovely Everywhere by Ke Li for you.
Tumblr media
Summary: Tong Danwei is a high school freshman with romantic dreams about the boy she is fated to meet. While on the way home from picking up groceries, she runs into a pretty boy, and that’s where our story begins. Will she find love in high school? And more importantly, will any boy be able to overlook the fact that although she is in high school, she still looks like an elementary student?? Follow along on Tong Danwei’s adventure of love and high school angst, with plenty of comedy thrown in to the mix.
Status: Complete
-
If you like the supernatural mystery aspect of Kagen no Tsuki starring younger characters with mysteriously dead-but-not-dead characters, then Route 225 might by a good series to try.  It’s by Shimura Takako & Fujino Chiya (Original Story).  You might know Shimura Takako from her other series like Wandering Son and Sweet Blue Flower, so you know she is great portraying emotional realism like Yazawa.
Tumblr media
Summary: 14-year-old Eriko finds herself left in charge of her younger brother Daigo when their parents suddenly disappear one warm summer evening. Trapped in a world that is very much like their own save for the lack of their parents, Eriko and Daigo find themselves desperate for the return of the worrywart mother and apathetic father they never thought they'd miss so badly...
Status: Complete
-
If you liked NANA because you liked reading about a pair of women who are very different and yet are very good friends to the point where their friendship is more important to them than romantic relationships (even if they struggle to properly communicate this to each other) then try the short series Tomodachi no Hanashi by Kawahara Kazune (Story) and Yamakawa Aiji (Art).
Tumblr media
Summary:  Eiko is something like a plain Jane and a doormat, while her best friend Moe is a head-turning beauty. Despite their differences, their friendship is as strong as ever.    Guys are always asking Moe out, but her answer is inevitable, "only if you promise to put Eiko before me."
Status: Complete
-
Did you like how Hachi from NANA kept losing her jobs?  And had no luck in love?  Do you prefer to read about young adult characters?  Even though we never talk about how funny Yazawa’s work is... was that something you really liked about her work? Dame na Watashi ni Koishite Kudasai by Nakahara Aya!  Hachi and Shibata aren’t exactly alike but they are both fun to read and get into the mindset of in a similar way.
Tumblr media
Summary:   The unemployed Shibata Michiko is betting everything she has on her romance with a younger man—literally. In order to keep him happy, she deprives herself of the things she wants and buys him expensive clothing and accessories. Since she's flat out broke, she needs to find a job before she starves to death and loses her young love interest. However, Michiko discovers that the boy was never interested in her romantically. Depressed at being dumped and after a series of unsuccessful interviews, she bumps into Kurosawa—an intimidating former boss she used to dislike.
Status: Complete, with a spin-off
-
If you’re interested in exploring Mikako’s feelings from Gokingo Monogatari when she dropped out of school then Cat Street might interest you.  Both MCs find themselves a group of friends and attend alternative high schools - though while Mikako’s is an art’s school, in Cat Street is more of a free school that seems to specialize in drop-outs and the like.
Tumblr media
Summary:  The story centers around Keito Aoyama, a former famous child actress. Due to a childhood incident, she retired from her career early and withdrew from normal society. Now 16, she passes her days in boredom and without purpose. But one day she runs into a stranger who takes her to El Liston--a free school for high school students like herself, who don't have a place where they belong. Though hesitant at first, Keito decides to enter El Liston and subsequently, she begins a new stage in her life. With the help of her only remaining childhood friend, Taiyou, and her new classmates Rei, Momiji, and Kouichi, Keito slowly finds the courage to open up to others and to accept their support. Will Keito return to acting? Will she find true friends? Love?

If you want a series like NANA that is about adult women who are good friends and roommates as they balance their life with their career, love-lives, and friendship with each other try Tokyo Alice by Toriko Chiya.  Alternatively, if you were wondering what Hachi might look like if you reversed her obsession with love with her love of shopping... you’ve got Tokyo Alice’s MC (lol)
Tumblr media
Summary:   Fu Arisugawa is a little worried there might be something wrong with her. She loves shopping above all else, using her money to buy designer and brand-name items to the exclusion of all else. But while her friends also enjoy shopping, they're all also on the hunt for love in one way or another – something that Fu finds she just isn't all that interested in. When her boss starts showing interest in her, will Fu figure it out? Or is she going to keep going in her shopping wonderland?

If what interested you most about NANA was it’s portrayal of the music industry of a new band and wanted more of that then try Beck by Sakuishi Harold.  Beck, like NANA, has an anime that while it doesn’t cover the entire series is worth watching or even having the soundtrack on as you read the series.
Tumblr media
Summary:  Fourteen-year-old Yukio "Koyuki" Tanaka is a dispirited young boy with no goals in life. However, this all changes when Koyuki saves a strange-looking dog named Beck from being harassed by a group of local kids. The dog's owner, 16-year-old Ryuusuke "Ray" Minami, is an emerging guitarist and the former member of a popular rock band. After Koyuki meets Ray again in a diner, the older boy leads him to his former band's meeting place and dazzles Koyuki with his amazing guitar skills. Slowly becoming interested in the glamour of western rock culture, Koyuki decides to start playing the guitar while helping Ray achieve his dream of leading the ultimate rock band. Together with Ray's younger sister Maho and a few other members, the two boys launch their career into the world of rock by forming a band called BECK. Beck follows the group's struggles and successes as they spread their fame across Japan.

If you like how Yazawa writes her female “rival” characters as sympathetic and likable (even if not everything they do is likable) then you might enjoy Koda Momoko’s Heroine Shikkaku.  It’s about a girl who is shocked when she discovers she’s more like the bitchy villainess who bullies the sweet and pure heroine in shojo manga.
Tumblr media
Summary:  This could be any girl. Imagine being a heroine of a love story. Hatori also believed that one day she would get married to her childhood friend, Rita. But that's not how the world works! This is a hilarious comedy that honestly paints a painful unrequited love story of this young girl!

If you want a short read like NANA, with two very different girls with the same name who tie their futures together then read the one-shot  Watashi to Watashi by Sahara Mizu.  Note that I’m only suggesting you read this specific one-shot, not any of the other one-shots contained in the collection this one is in... Actually I very much insist you don’t read the first one.  I highly recommend reading others’ of Sahara Mizu’s work if you enjoy this one because even if none of them are directly similar to any of Yazawa’s... the emotional complexity is.
Tumblr media
Summary:   Two girls with the same name; one beautiful and athletic, the other awkward and shunned. But who’s the lucky one?
Status: Complete

If you like a series having 2 characters named Nana in NANA (even if their relationship with each other is... entirely different) and enjoy the format of Nana and Hachi continuing to address each other in inner monologues in the future where they haven’t seen each other for years or you just like messy, realistic relationships try We Were There by Obata Yuuki.
Tumblr media
Summary:  The start of high school life. To the girls, that also meant the start of their love lives. For brand new first year student, Takahashi Nanami (Nana for short), it was no different... She happens to end up in the same class as the incredibly popular Yano Motoharu, who rumors say that two thirds of all the girls are guaranteed to fall in love with. But will that hold true for Nana, who says that if she had to choose between like or dislike, she'd say she dislikes him!?

What was your favorite thing about Tenshi Nanka Ja Nai?  Was it Akira struggling with his feelings for someone that married into his family?  Was it Midori and Mamirin’s friendship?  Try Omoi, Omoware, Furi, Furare by Sakisaka Io.  (Strobe Edge also by Sakisaka might also work for you).
Tumblr media
Summary:  The story centers around Yuna and Akari who have two very different views of love: Yuna is someone who sees love as a dream and Akari is someone who is very realistic about her romance choices. Meanwhile, there are two boys, Kazuomi and Rio, who also have different views of love: Kazuomi's an airhead and doesn't understand the concept of love, while Rio grabs the opportunity when confessed to as long as the girl looks cute.
Status: Complete, being translated

If you just like Yazawa’s work and want to read works by a close friend of hers...  Yoshizumi Wataru!  You might know her best from Marmalade Boy, but she also worked on quite a few josei works about young adults... Like Cappuccino (if you like moving on from a first serious relationship as we saw with Hachi and Shouji), but also Cherish and Spicy Pink.
Tumblr media
-
That’s all I got for now... But again... Let me know if you read any of these! Whether or not at my suggestion lol. And add on too! I’ve read or at least tried all of these myself so now I’m the one in need of recs lol.

The Sohma boys as boyfriends/husbands?
*cracks knuckles* okayyy this one is fun lets get down to it!
yuki sohma is! a fuck boy! yuki is the boy who sends machi/kakeru/whoever tf late night “you up?” texts, who lightens the mood by saying “noo dont do x youre so sexy aha,” who is always down to fuck. he and machi watch titanic together; yuki is crying halfway through the movie but hes also being a slutty slutty boy together with machi. he wants machi to draw him like a french girl. with kakeru its a little less obvious because yuki would Rather Die than be caught screwing around with kakeru, but hes still the type to shut him up with a kiss, to avoid serious conversations by doing sexy stuff lmao. that being said, he is still a very emotional boy, and rather open with his feelings; he tends to intellectualize emotions (abby would say its his libra moon) but overall he is very sweet. he believes the only way to respect women is through pleasure and tbh can you blame him??
ayame sohma is an absolute sweetheart omg, tbh discord and i hc that he and mine have the fewest fights of any of the couples; they just exude that “perfect communication, perfect for each other” energy yknow? anyway aya has plenty of flair to spare and he spends a lot of it complimenting mine and making her feel like the most perfect and beautiful princess in the world. they both wear the dress on their wedding day and its gorgeous; theyre beautiful and soulmates and aya is very sweet.
kureno sohma is head over heels in love w his girl uo (if youre gonna fight me over kurenuo dont plz :P)! he’s the type to always assume that uo is doing fine because “shes much more capable with most things than he is” which is true! uo will call him and be upset about something or other and he’ll ask her if shes okay; when she explains whats going on and how shes wondering if she can’t handle....... whatever it is (college uo college uo head canon that actually instead of them travelling together immediately kureno went on his own and uo went to college but they still stayed pen pals anyway shes worried about not doing well in classes) he says something incredibly sweet along the lines of “well, of course you can handle this! you’re capable of everything” and she can tell he really really means it and it doesnt solve the problem but it does make her feel better, and reminds her that she is loved
shigure sohma, once things settle after canon, finally has the chance to spoil the girl he loves, and he does; actually, i think it negatively impacts the rest of his relationships for a while. he becomes completely subservient to akito for a while because he’s found his “happy ending,” so it’s okay to give into those feelings of wanting to spoil her now, right? she’s the most important person in his life, after all. anyway, that mindset lasts for a bit until suddenly it breaks bc akki isnt suddenly perfect either, shes still naturally jealous and afraid that he will leave her, that he’ll cheat on her, so they have a fight at some point; they spend some time apart where shigure learns that it’s okay to love his family and himself, on top of akki, and that being in love isnt about doing everything for the other person; meanwhile akki gets some therapy about her anxiety and rage issues and settles down enough to trust shigure. from then on he’s still very loving and spoiling, but he spends more time teasing her than before, and spends time discussing pros and cons of various couple decisions that they have to make.
hatori sohma is super super cute and super super awkward oml. he spends the early days of his relationship with mayu trying to be cool and impress her because shes so cool (!); he buys aviator sunglasses bc he heard they make people look cool and mysterious and his lactose intolerant ass will go on ice cream dates with mayu which doesnt always.... end well lmaooo. hes very protective of her, perhaps a bit overbearing when she’s sick or injured especially, but it’s always very clear that his heart is full of love for his girl, that he loves her to bits.
hatsuharu sohma has big dick energy  ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) now that thats out of the way: if anyone on this list was gonna tease his girl its haru, oml. haru spends 99% of his day finding new and exciting ways to annoy rin cause he thinks shes cute when she’s annoyed (she is) and because hes very confident that they’ll be together forever p much no matter what (they will be). the other 1% of the day is being the sweetest guy in the world bc thats just haru, he tells rin that shes beautiful, that she’s the only girl for him, that its just facts that they would be together, and then the 1% is up and hes explaining that its bc “who else has this goth energy” and “anyway i like your tits” but! its still sweet, even though he’s annoying.
momiji sohma is a cutie! but he’s also a little shit sometimes. he’d rather be a little shit to the rest of the world, with kimi, than to her specifically though; the two of them are dramatic little shits who stage fake arguments, uncomfortable couple dynamics, overly slutty relationships, etc for the specific purpose of the Drama TM of it all. they also like to play up traditional “male and female, husband and wife” roles to the point of satire, because they think it’s funny to point out how ridiculous it is to be such stilted characters together; unfortunately, however, no one around them pays enough attention socially to figure any of it out :( but! it doesnt matter bc for the most part theyre just starting drama and making each other laugh, so its good :).
hiro sohma is v v v sweet and protective; when he gets a little older he joins the “respect women at all costs” gang with kyo, hatori, kureno, and ayame (vs the “respect women through sex” gang with yuki, shigure, haru, and momiji); he’s a bit of a shit about it bc its hiro but its very sweet! anybody comes and bothers kisa and he’s on their ass about how you can’t treat girls that way blah blah blah hiros v talkative lmao. anyway he’s cute moving on.
kyo sohma (bc i like making kyo stans wait til the end to get their man >:P) is completely obsessed with doin right by his girl. he loves tohru to bits (he’s never ever loved anyone else either, man is a tohrusexual through and through) and honestly its a little overbearing sometimes here too lmao. hc that during the v stressful time when theyre planning their wedding (and tohru is pregnant haha) kyo does his whole “let me do everything for you are you sure you should be doing that in your condition? get some rest i can do this for you also fuck anybody coming to bother her with anything yall are assholes” thing--which, normally tohru thinks is cute n sweet tbh (cause it kinda is) but when shes stressed out of her mind, hormonal, and annoyed w herself for not being able to do as much as she normally can? she gets a little snippy with him sometimes :) however its just a learning experience for them kyo eventually gets better at reading the mood and they live happily ever after forever
thanks again for the ask anon! i love doing stuff like this, anyone can feel free to send me asks whenever! special thanks to the discord for making some of these headcanons in my mind, especially @machi-kuragi, @thewinterose, and @yunsoh, and also MANYA who is not on tumblr but should be tumblr famous  ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) anyway yeah all we do on discord is talk about furuba headcanons and make fun of each other so a lot of this came from collaborative efforts with them! love yall

Headcanon: Orihime is the primary bread winner in the family and works as a famous news anchor.
Ooohhh…I like this idea. And this is what came to mind!!! Also, I added in two of my OC’s for Ichigo and Orihime’s family: twins Reika and Ayaka. Read more about them here.
“Look out below! Aliens are coming in from the engine room! What should we do Captain?”
“Man your battle stations men! Defend the ship! Fight to the last!”
Three sets of little feet came barreling down the stairs with screams, squeals, shrieks, giggles and ‘pew-pew-pew’ laser gun sounds.
“Captain! We’ve been cut off! Where should we go now?”
“Quick! Head for the brig!”
From upstairs, a deep male voice inquired dryly, “You sure you want to head down to the ship’s dungeon, Kazui?”
“Ummm…” called the ‘captain’ back up the stairs, “Where do we want to go?”
“Try the helm.”
Looking back at his ‘subordinates’, Kazui pointed towards the kitchen and ordered, “Quick! Head for the helm!”
The seven year old boy took off with his four year old twin sisters, Reika and Ayaka, close at his heels. They continued playing and frolicking for another ten minutes or so, before their father came down the stairs with a hamper of laundry piled so high that it nearly reached his chin. Rounding the corner to head into the living room, if it had been a cartoon movie, Ichigo might have allowed the basket of dirty clothes to slip from his numb fingers and add to the mess that he had just walked into. Couch cushions had been pulled from their intended places and strewn in a rather haphazard way (at least that was what it looked like at first glance) all about the room, while a couple of afghans and even one of their everyday tablecloths were draped across and now bare couches and the coffee table and that might not have been so bad if it were for the ‘Hansel-esque’ trail of unidentifiable crumbs leading into what Ichigo could only assume was the command center/helm of his offsprings’ imaginary space craft.
“Lieutenant! Behind you! Don’t let the alien touch you with it’s anti-awake stuff!”
“Augh! Captain! Save me!”
“Wahhh! Captain, the alien caught the lieutenant! What’ll we do?!”
“Stand back and keep your nose plugged! I’m going to get her back!”
“Captain!”
Just like with his wife, Ichigo couldn’t help but grin and do his best to stifle a chuckle as his children’s antics. Honestly, it boggled his mind how they managed to come up with such elaborate games to play together when he was 98% sure they had never seen the kind of sci-fi movie or show that their story was seemingly based off of. Then again…they had to take after their mother in other ways than just her good looks.
As he was wondering just how to get their attention as it was getting close to their bedtime and unless they cleaned up this mess there was no way they were going to get through their usual bedtime ritual. Then he spotted a walkie-talkie laying nearby and got an idea. Setting down the laundry basket and turning the device on, Ichigo took a couple moments to breath deeply to try and compose himself before briefly inserting himself into the kids’ game.
Pressing the talk button, Ichigo said in a flat, officious tone, “Captain Kurosaki! Come in, Captain Kurosaki! This is the General Commander Patriarch! Over!”
Immediately all other screeching and giggling stopped and Ichigo could imagine all three of them looking at each other in surprise and then delight as they realized their father had joined in their game.
Apparently they did not wish to break from the storyline they had already established as Reika responded on the walkie, “Sorry Genner Command Party, but the captain is trying to save the lieutenant right now. Um…over.”
Squeezing the corners of his mouth between his thumb and forefinger, Ichigo then went on gravely, “I see. That is most unfortunate. Tell the captain, though, that very soon the queen will be addressing the nation and if he and his lieutenants wish to see her speech, the aliens need to be taken care of and this space ship cleaned up good and proper or it will make the queen very sad. Over.”
There were a few moments of silence and Ichigo was just beginning to wonder if maybe his kids’ were a bit too young for those kind of vague directions when suddenly the screaming and squealing commenced again, only this time it was followed by a kind of explosion of the blankets covering Kazui, Reika and Ayaka as they all raced around trying to put the room back together as best they could. Kazui did fine on his own folding the afghans and tablecloth, but Ichigo took pity on Reika and Ayaka, helping them to pick up and arrange the pillow cushions again as most of them were at least half as big as the four-year-olds.
With the floor cleared, Ichigo could see a package of some kind of chips they had apparently shared, which seemed to be the source of the crumbs. Before he could even say a word, Kazui snatched up the bag to throw in the garbage while Reika and Ayaka knelt down to pick up as many of the pieces as they could with their little fingers.
Heart melting instantly at their sincere and desperate attempts to be helpful, Ichigo wrapped his left hand around both of Ayaka’s then Reika’s with his right as he said, “Don’t worry, Aya-chan, Rei-chan. Daddy will take care of this while you and your brother head upstairs and get changed.”
As twins are sometimes wont to do, Reika and Ayaka looked at each other then in perfect unison straightened up, gave their father a big smile and leaned over to give each his cheeks a big kiss. It wasn’t until he let their hands go (which he purposefully didn’t do for at least four seconds) that the girls leaned away with a big ‘Muah!’ sound and raced out of the room and up the stairs to get their pajamas on so that they could see ‘the queen’s address to the nation’. Unable to control the pleased flush of his cheeks or the rather dopey grin on his face, Ichigo quickly headed to the closet to pull out the vacuum to dispatch of the pesky crumbs.
Less than five minutes later, the whole Kurosaki clan, minus the ‘queen mother’, were comfortably ensconced on the couch before the television while the ‘general commander patriarch’ adeptly turned on the set and swiftly selected the channel they were all anxious to watch. They had to sit through a couple of tedious commercials before the show began and even then it took a few minutes before the camera moved away from the head newsman who was announcing the various stories that would be covered during that particular news hour to the woman Ichigo, Kazui, Ayaka and Reika all wished to see. As per usual, their waiting was rewarded quite spectacularly.
Tonight, Orihime was wearing a particularly flattering ruffled blouse with an onyx brooch fastened at the neck, while over top she had on an emerald colored suit coat. Her hair was loosely twisted and pinned so that the low hanging ponytail hung over her right shoulder, while her make-up was only minimally done so that her natural beauty shone through. To make her eyes pop, however, there was the faintest trace of green and black make-up on her top eyelids, seemingly to match her outfit.
The first half hour of the news always covered topics that both Ichigo and Orihime felt their children could handle: an animal shelter throwing an event to help promote adoptions, a new restaurant sending one of their chefs into the studio to demonstrate how to make one of their not-quite-so-signature dishes, a successful sports team/player or exceptional students excelling in their particular field and so on. Once all the ‘feel good news’ was out of the way, Orihime would secretly signal to her children and her husband that it was time to head upstairs.
On this particular evening, Orihime and her co-anchor had been interviewing a young gymnast who was well on their way to qualifying for the following years Olympic Games but had had to do some intensive training after they were diagnosed with a malignant tumor that was successfully removed and Orihime wrapped the segment up by laying a hand over her heart and saying sincerely, “I’m sure your mother is so proud of how far you have come after such a scary diagnosis. The best of luck to you both in the next few months.”
The camera pulled back to show a wide-shot of both anchors and while the man began introducing the next topics that would be discussed after the commercial break, Orihime looked into the camera and smiled before giving her children the signal that said ‘I love you all and I’ll see you in the morning’. She placed her index finger next to her eye and tapped it slowly and deliberately one, two, three times.
Wrapping his arms around the small bodies surrounding him, Ichigo said, “Okay all. Brushed teeth and under covers in five. Go!”
While most kids would get even more wound up by the directive to hurry and borderline refuse to settle down when it was time, the Kurosaki children had no such issues. They could be wild and crazy one minute and then calm and docile the next, especially at bedtime. Kazui, Ayaka and Reika were by no means ‘perfect children’, but they came pretty darn close in Ichigo’s estimation.
After taking the time to tuck them all in, kiss them affectionately on the forehead and wish them pleasant dreams, Ichigo headed back downstairs to attend to the previously forgotten laundry before settling back down in front of the tv to finish watching his wife with his heart swelling with pride every time he saw her smiling at the screen and listening to her compassionate voice talk about the more difficult topics the news had to cover.
Unbeknownst to the kids, Ichigo also had his own special signal that Orihime would give him at the end of her news hour. In all the time they had been married and she had started working in front of the camera, he had not missed a single broadcast. Honestly, he wasn’t sure which part he loved more about the whole thing: the fact that Orihime cared enough to think of a way to deliberately show him how much she loved him every night in front of an entire studio as well as viewing audience, or the fact that while he needed to be comfortable with his wife being so much in the public eye, open to all their criticism and overblown affection alike, there were parts of herself that Orihime reserved just for him and their kids.
Ichigo snapped out of his reverie in just enough time to catch the signal: a subtle hand over her heart, while she brushed the tips of two fingers along her lips. Unable to contain his smile, Ichigo returned the gesture regardless of the fact that his wife obviously could not see it. However, for some reason, Ichigo thought she knew as almost immediately after he did it, Orihime’s smile would become just a little bit brighter.
Switching off the tv as it went to commercials, Ichigo leaned his head back and closed his eyes, listening to the various sounds throughout the house. If he listened hard enough, he could hear the soft breathing of his kids upstairs and the constant ‘tick-tick-tick’ of the clock in the master bedroom along with the other typical sounds that could be heard when all was still in the house.
As per usual, Ichigo dozed off for a couple of hours on the couch, but immediately became alert when he sensed a familiar, warm presence hovering over him. Opening his eyes slowly, the smiling face of his queen came slowly into focus. What a perfect sight to wake up to, if he did say so himself, even if she was upside down at the moment.
“I’m back,” said Orihime as she reached down to stroke her fingertips along his lips.
Reaching up to take hold of her hand, Ichigo responded with, “Welcome home.”
Shaking her head in gentle admonition, Orihime said, “Honestly, Ichigo. Why don’t you head up to bed? You’ll put such a kink in your neck sleeping like this.”
Chuckling and shaking his head in response, Ichigo replied, “Don’t wanna. Can’t sleep up there by myself. It’s too cold.”
“Oh, you…what am I going to do with you?”
Grinning cheekily, Ichigo’s answer was to cup a hand around the back of her head and carefully pull her down so that he could officially welcome his wife home.
When he finally released her, Ichigo stretched and groaned as he said, “I’ve gotta move the laundry into the dryer before it starts to smell. You head upstairs and get comfortable, all right?”
“Okay,” said Orihime and she started to walk away before she turned back around and said, “Would you rather I wear something comfy so we can snuggle or…something else?”
Inhaling deeply, Ichigo shrugged his shoulders and said, “Surprise me.”
Before she went up the stairs, Orihime gave him another smile that gave him absolutely no indication as to what he would find when he did come up. That was just fine with him. He would be the predictable one in the family who enjoyed allowing the others to surprise him with their spontaneity, while they could always come to him when they needed something firm and steady to hold them together.

Wish Come True
Commission for | @simply-nerdy-gal
Pairing | Aya Hashimoto x Sero Hanta
Word Count | 2,371
Note: The festival featured in this fic is known as ‘Tanabata’, or the star festival! During this festival, people usually will write down wishes on small colorful strips of paper and hang them on bamboo due to it’s tall growth and closeness to the heavens and the stars, so if you’re curious about the mention of wishes in this fic, this is what it is referring to!
The words ‘It’s not really a date’ had flown through Aya’s mind and past her lips a countless amount of times that week, however now that she stood staring at herself in the mirror perfecting the small bit of makeup she had decided to put on for the hundredth time that evening, her thoughts on that phrase were beginning to change.
Lately it seemed, out of all her friends that knew about her situation, she was the only one in denial about her relationship with her close ‘friend’ Sero. Everyone insisted that she hung out with him way too often to be ‘just friends’ and made it clear they were shocked that she didn’t seem to notice the lovestruck, dorky look he’d always have on his face whenever she was around. Of course, it wasn’t that she didn’t like hearing those things, everyone loves to hear that people think them and their crush would be a good couple, however she could still never bring herself to agree. For some reason, she just couldn’t fathom someone as amazing and friendly as him liking her, so instead she brushed off everyone’s thoughts and assumptions, insisting they were just friends and that nothing was going on between the two.
Because of her casualness around the chatter, the noise of the possibility of Aya and Sero being together began to die down slowly, though the moment she brought up the fact that he had asked to go to the Star Festival with her the upcoming weekend, it was as if the intense shipping of the two had come back full force.
“Hold on, hold on, hold on..” Mina interrupted, a smile of disbelief on her face as she continued on. “You’re telling me he asked you on a festival date and you two still aren’t dating!?”
“I-It’s not a date!” She huffed, rolling her eyes and wishing her inner emotions weren’t always so easily on display in the form of her now warm cheeks and stuttered out words. “We’re just..hanging out, that’s all..”
“Hanging out, together, alone.” Jirou chimed in only for Mina to catch her drift and add on her own two sense soon after. “And he’ll probably insist on paying. And I’ll bet he’ll compliment your looks at least twice.”
“Twice? I feel like he’ll aim for three times, but you never kn-”
“Guysss!” Aya said, flopping her head down onto the table, “It’s seriously not gonna be like that, you guys are just getting way ahead of yourselves.”
‘And getting my hopes up’ She thought to herself. Aya loved her friends of course, but the more they talked about it, the more nervous she became. She was almost afraid of them hyping up her confidence because she just knew it would lead to her doing something stupid like finally confessing to Sero after months of daydreaming about him and cherishing every moment she got to spend with him.
“Sure sure,” Jirou laughed, “Either way hopefully you guys have fun. Speaking of that though did you guys tie up any wishes this year?”
“I did! I want a new set of headphones!”
“Dude! You’re not supposed to say what you wished for!!” Jirou laughed, “What about you Fishin? Aya?”
“Ah yeah! I put something up.” Fishin nodded, a small smile on her face as she turned to Aya along with everyone else as they awaited her response.
“I did too, hopefully some of that magic will rub off on all of us.” She laughed out, her usually peppy smile returning to her features as she sat up in her seat and stretched her arms above her head.
Luck was definitely something she needed as she thought back on that conversation that had happened a few days earlier. At the time discussing her ‘date’ with Sero just felt like playful, teasing chatter, but now that he was meant to show up at her door any minute, she began to get a bit nervous again. She didn’t know why, it wasn’t like this was the first time they’d ever hung out alone, in fact they spent a lot of time just hanging out together in one another’s rooms, but for some reason this just felt different. It was like an itch she couldn’t scratch, but unfortunately she ran out of time to even try as the sound of soft knocking at her door brought her out of her thoughts.
Aya was quick to slip on her sandals, give herself one last look in her mirror before taking a deep breath and opening the door.
“Hey! Sorry I’m sorta late, I lost track of time.” Sero said with a sheepish smile on his face as he scratched at the back of his neck awkwardly, though his embarrassment for being late was quickly aimed towards embarrassment for how long his eyes lingered on her figure. She was beautiful, after all, somehow even more so than usual, and his poor heart almost couldn’t take it even though the evening had only just begun.
“That’s fine! It took me a bit longer to get ready then I thought it would anyways.” Aya chuckled in response. “But, um, are you all ready to go?” She asked, noticing how he was just sort of staring at her until his eyes widened a bit upon his brain realizing he had been asked a question.
“Yeah! Er, yeah, sorry...You look really nice, Aya.” He said, his brain losing track of his words once more and for a moment he wished he had kept his mouth shut, but the soft blush that fanned over her cheeks and adorable as ever smile that formed on her face eased his worries.
“Oh, thank you..” She mumbled, stepping out into the hall and closing the door behind her before shaking her head a bit as a way to tell herself to pull herself together. “Well anyways we should get going and try to beat the crowds a bit!” She cheered, giving him another vibrant smile that he happily returned with a nod as the two set off together.
It was Sero’s ability to melt her insecurities and nervousness away with his happy and laid back demeanor that had made her fall for him, so she was happy that he was able to work his charm this time around as well as her nervousness slowly faded away as they chatted happily together the whole way to where all the festival activities were going on. They arrived at the perfect time where it seemed the crowds were just starting to build, giving a lively and vibrant air to the whole place as the hundreds of colorful lanterns and sparkling string lights lit up the streets that were lined with almost just as many booths.
It was a beautiful sight indeed, the soft glow of the lights under the moonlight giving a warm vibe to everything it touched, though Sero had to admit nothing was as impressive as the way the light shone off of Aya’s features. His friends had been telling him over and over again to just finally tell her how he felt about her, but for some reason, he just couldn’t bring himself to do so. It seemed like every time he finally worked up the courage and walked in to school ready to spill his heart to her by the end of the day, his bravery would falter the second she smiled that heart stopping smile and waved a good morning to him. Still, despite his previous failures, he was putting all his money on tonight and all that was left was to hope for the best.
“Oooh they have yakitori over there! We should get some, I’m starving!!” Aya cheered, being pretty honest in using the term ‘starving’ since she’d specifically not eaten much during the day just to save up for all the amazing festival foods she knew she’d be able to munch on in the evening.
“Oh yeah I’m pretty hungry too, training was intense today. Then again, it kinda always is with Aizawa.” Sero groaned in response, following her lead to the small booth that drew them both in with the amazing smell. He was surprised to see her pull out her own wallet once they ordered though, but that only reminded him that he technically never really said this was a date.
“Ah hey, I can pay! I’ve been doing some odd jobs around the neighborhood to save up some money anyways.” He said, quickly putting a hand out to stop her before digging out his own wallet and handing over the right amount.
“Oh, thank you!” Aya said, a small blush finding its way to her cheeks yet again as she took her own skewer and handed him the other, forcing away the memory of what Mina had said only a few days prior.
“What have you been saving up for?” She asked curiously through a small mouthful of food, not wanting to wait a second more to keep her stomach from growling.
“Well it was for tonight for yo-” He stopped, almost choking on his food as he realized he almost just outed his intentions of saving up just so he could spoil her for a night. “Yakitori! For Yakitori! I figured there’d be some being sold somewhere tonight, I haven’t had it in ages!” He laughed awkwardly, kicking himself mentally for that horrible excuse for a cover and letting out a relieved sigh when he heard Aya laugh at how strange it was to save up for a specific food.
“I’d say that’s money well saved then, this is awesome!” She laughed out, already moving back into the flow of people and following along to look at all the different booths presenting all sorts of games and snacks, and while her words were aimed at the food, Sero couldn’t help but smile and nod with his eyes on her instead.
“Yeah, it is pretty awesome..”
He could have stood there staring for hours, a habit he had picked up some time ago when he first realized just how hard he had fallen for her, but after a moment he shook himself from his stupor and followed after her. There were plenty of things the night offered for them to enjoy after all, and enjoy them they did. The two of them spent all night going from booth to booth, playing silly nostalgic games and eating way too many sweets, but despite their tired legs and aching stomachs it was surely a night to remember, and what better way to end such an incredible night then to watch the fireworks from the perfect spot the two of them had somehow managed to snatch.
While the games and other entertainment of the night was surely fun, there was nothing that lit up a smile on his face as bright as the fireworks displayed before them more than that completely absorbed and content smile shown on Aya’s face. It was like all her troubles had melted away leaving nothing but happiness and warmth and knowing she felt that way made him feel just the same.
For a split moment, it was like even the loud blasts of the colorful fireworks had faded into silence as Aya’s gaze shifted to his own, that ghost of a smile still lingering on her face that was so entrancing that Sero hardly noticed the space between the two closing in despite him being the one closing it and before he knew it, the rush of his beating heart and exploding fireworks came back all at once in the form of a single spark bursting from the feeling of his lips pressing against her own. He could only wish that he could be frozen in that moment forever, savoring the warmth of her lips that slowly pressed back against his own, but his senses slammed back into his mind as quickly as they had gone and he scrambled to pull away, cheeks flaring and chest heaving for air. He couldn’t even bring himself to say anything for a second as he just stared into her innocently blinking eyes that seemed full of nothing but curiosity and something else he wasn’t sure of, but he didn’t have time to linger on that.
“C-Crap, did I seriously just do that!?” Was all he could muster, fumbling backwards in his spot. “I’m so sorry I didn’t even--I didn’t mean to like..that wasn’t what I had in mind! I mean I, I guess I did but not all weird and sudden like that!”
It was as if his careful words had brought her out of her own trance, her cheeks burning even more as she replayed that single moment in her head once more as if to make sure it had actually happened, but the look of worry on his face reminded her that she hadn’t even responded yet.
“Oh! That’s..that’s okay, It wasn’t a bad thing or anything I don’t think.” She said, her calm tone surprising even her. It wasn’t that her heart wasn’t pounding out of her chest at the moment, but it was just..a nice feeling, to have all of one’s pent up thoughts and emotions summed up and returned in one single action.
“Seriously?” Sero asked in response, his rigid figure finally relaxing as he realized she really didn’t look mad at all, in fact the way she was biting her lip just to keep her smile from growing any bigger was incredibly cute.
“Yeah, it’s..” She stopped, shaking her head and laughing at herself for no particular reason other than she was filled with a childish sense of lovestruck giddiness. “I wrote down a wish, to hang up on the bamboo.”
“..You mean for the festival?” He asked curiously, his frazzled brain not really catching onto what she was trying to get at and forcing her to continue. It seemed luck and a little bit of the night’s magic really had rubbed off on her and while the pounding in her chest and warmth still lingering on her lips was a bit overwhelming, happiness was all that she felt.
“Mhm, and I’m just happy that it really came true.”

Gensokyo Festival Day 22: Kosuzu’s Grand Tour
The following is a transcript of everything Kosuzu said while giving a guided tour of the Human Village, which I somehow managed to scribble down during the tour. Amazingly, no-one spoke to me or acknowledged my existence throughout the tour, which makes this framing device a little tenuous. What the flip, at least I didn’t embarrass myself by trying to flirt with Aya...
Oh, hello there! Are you here for the tour?
Great! I'm Kosuzu, by the way. I work in the book rental shop, which we'll get to during the tour. Is everyone ready? Perfect! Follow me, everybody, and try to look human!
Right. On your left, you should be seeing a house, and on the right there should be another house. This is a pretty typical road; we have lots of roads just like this one in the village, although a few of them lead to bigger houses with gardens and stuff.
What? The shopping district? We're inside it, actually! A lot of us run small businesses out of our own homes. Look, there's the hairdresser's, right there! Shuri and Chichiro do the best side ponytails in the world!
Yes, as I was saying, most of the villagers can't afford to buy a shop, so they turn their homes into sort of half-shops. My parents are lucky; they inherited a house with two floors, so we can use the whole ground floor for books!
And now, here's the town square! This is where we do... town square things, like festivals and stuff! This is actually the oldest part of the village, it's been here since four thousand years ago.
...What? No, Mamizou, I wasn't there. I'm fifteen!
Anyway, in the centre of the square, you'll see our iconic dragon statue. Believe it or not, the colour of its eyes can predict the weather!
...Oh, you do believe it. Well, great! Good. Hey, did you know it sometimes changes direction, too?! I once saw the statue swivelling to face me while I was out buying tea, and-
Nue, that was you?! You made our statue rotate?!
Oh! Hi, Ms Kamishirasawa! No, no-one's making the statue rotate or anything. This is just a tour. I'm allowed to give guided tours.
All right, I admit that one's a youkai, but what's the harm in it?! You know they need to scare humans in order to live! One youkai knowing what the village looks like isn't going to-
Okay, fine, everyone in the group is a youkai. Oh, please don't beat them up! I need the money! I promise I won't show them anything embarrassing or dangerous, or...
You... want to escort us? I mean, you want to come too? Great! That's lovely! See, Aya? I told you I'd find a history expert!
Right. Um, let's go and see some of the more upmarket houses! Just this way, past the high street. Come along!
You can see quite a few of the bigger shops along here. There's Hitomi's House of Sashimi, the general store, the Kirisame-ya second-hand shop-
Wh-WHAT?! Of course we're not on our way to a lesbian orgy! How could you, Mr Kirisame?! Oh, Alice, Nue, will you please stop giggling? I'm not even of age!
...No, I will not tell Marisa to kill herself! Shame on you!
Wait, no, stop! Get off! Ow! Ouch! HELP!
G-good grief... That was a nice high kick, Ms Kamishirasawa. Very... Very effective. He's going to be feeling that in the morning.
Right. Well. Step this way, ladies; there's some great architecture along here, and even a shrine!
On your left, you should be seeing the Silver Mansion. It probably belongs to the lord of the village, but no-one's ever seen him, so I don't know for sure. Just look at those walls, though! Genuine silver birch planks, put together over a hundred years ago by a team of miyadaiku! And those paper walls have never grown a single pair of eyes!
On the other side of the road, there's Shigeru Kawasaki's house. He's an entrepreneur and landlord who loves gardening. Just look at those bonsai trees and the cute little flower beds! They're amazing!
Oh, here he comes now! Good afternoon, Mr Kawasaki!
...Wait, what do you mean we have to pay to admire your flowers?! They're in full view by the side of the road! You can't charge us just for looking at something!
No, don't call your guards! Oh, dear... Ms Kamishirasawa, could you talk to him? Oh, my! D-don't hurt him! Oh... Um... I-I think we should stop for lunch now...
Aya, can you stop taking pictures of Ms Kamishirasawa stomping on the poor chap's throat? It's really tacky.
Thank you. We'll be taking lunch in the village's premiere book-lending establishment, Suzunaan! My mother and I made some veggie curry and cheesecake, and there's half a salami in the pantry. We can probably spare you a slice each. We have a lot of old books and some classics which are out of print, too, so you're welcome to browse when we get there!
...Mamizou, why are you looking at me like that?
Wh-what do you mean, devious?! I'm just trying to give you all a nice tour! And the curry was pretty expensive to make...
Anyway, the bookshop is just along Orange Blossom Street. Follow me, everyone!
Here we are: Suzunaan, the oldest and most well-established book lender in the village! Just leave your shoes by the letter box. No, not on the little statue, Nue. Mummy, we're here! The tour is here!
She'll just be a few seconds. Here, take some seats!
All right, Nue, put down that chair. You know that wasn't what I meant.
I'm not cute when I'm angry! Mamizou, why would you say that?!
Oh, wow, this curry is delicious! Dig in, everyone!
Eep! NUE, PUT DOWN THAT SPADE THIS SECOND!
I'm so sorry, I had no idea she was going to be like this... Wait, why am I apologising? The tours were your idea, Mummy.
Fair point, bringing Nue was my idea... I'm going to stop talking and have my cheesecake now, all right?
Mmmmm... So good!
Wow, that meal was a triumph! Right, for the next stage of our tour- yes, Aya? What is it?
Agatha Chris Q? I'm sorry, I don't know her. I'm not even sure she lives in Gensokyo! I could maybe show you where the Child of Miare lives, though, since we'd be going that way anyway...
Mamizou, why are you giggling?
All right, keep your secrets. Let's go, people! To North Chicken Tempura Street!
Sorry, Alice, I do not know who came up with that name.
I do know that this street was on the front lines in a major battle some two or three hundred years ago. A bunch of kappa came along in steam-powered tanks and tried to burn down the village so they could take our cucumber! If you look closely, you can still see the scarring on the road where their tanks drove.
It's said that the spirits of the fallen warriors still linger in this very street, and that if a kappa ever attacks the village again, they'll rise up to defeat her.
...Oh, you've all met the spirits of the fallen warriors. Well, great! Anyway, there are a couple of places of worship a little further along. Not the usual sorts of shrines; instead we have a Buddhist temple and a Taoist church-
Wait, what's going on?! There's... There's a woman in a headscarf wrestling with another woman in a stupid hat...
Ichirin and Futo? Those are their names? Well, I never... Um, let's take the scenic route through the alleys. Watch out, it's a little muddy here. Or it might be animal dung. Let's just, um, step around it...
Nue, don't you dare throw that me. I have a spell-card.
Well, yes, you do have ten of the strongest spell-cards in the land, and enough magic pulsating through your veins to duel for hours, but that still doesn't give you any right to-
OH, MY DAYS, A HEADLESS WOMAN! Keine, save me!
Oh, it's only you, Sekibanki... Good grief, you scared me to death!
Well, you see, I'm doing a guided tour of the village. For a modest fee, you get an in-depth look at all the best stuff in the village, with fascinating historical insights and a free meal to boot!
...Well, that wasn't very nice. Honestly, some people just don't care about culture...
That was completely uncalled-for, Mamizou. Aren't you ashamed of being so... Well, so pithy?
Oh. That makes sense, I suppose. Let's press on! Just around this barrel, over the two filthy cushions and past the... Dead dog... Which wasn't here a week ago... Oh, gods, I'm going to throw up! Duck, Aya!
Ohhh, my throat hurts... So sorry about your boots, Alice. It'll wash out, though, won't it?
Right. The Hieda mansion. Just this way, ladies, past the puddle of vomit...
Oh, yes, there's a little roadside shrine here! The Moriyas set it up, I think. It's supposed to drive away snakes. And, just a little further, the Hieda residence! Isn't it beautiful? Just like Akyuu...
I-I didn't say that! I said nothing! Gosh, look at those clouds moving in, we could be in for a cold night. I love mochi, though, don't you? It's so sweet and chewy, and-and I've been thinking of buying some new boots for the winter. My old pair are a little too small. Er. Um.
Oh! Akyuu! Hi! Um, I was just, um... W-we were doing a tour! Of the village! Would you please tell my friends here something interesting?
Really? Six hundred years?
Gosh...
Oh, my days, that's horrible!
Did-did he really manage to defeat all twelve of them?!
Amazing!
Wow, that was so kind of him! And after all the trouble her allergies caused, too...
Good golly, we've been listening for two hours! Akyuu, you really go all in, don't you? You really are the greatest. Thank you so much!
Um, Nue, why are you snoring? Alice, why are you using Nue as a pillow?! Come on, wake up! Akyuu's making a big effort for all of us!
No, it's okay, I forgive you. I suppose it was a bit long...
Right, then, time for the highlight of our tour: a trip to the Hakurei Shrine!
...Mamizou, what do you mean, you went there for tea yesterday? I don't believe it. I won't! I refuse to let my tour end on a low note just because youkai are weird! Akyuu, could we please borrow a bottle of sake? And maybe some ramune?
Ah, this is perfect! Thank you so much, sweetie- I mean, um, Miss Hieda no Akyuu, my... Platonic... Heterosexual friend...
Nue, Mamizou, stop laughing! Now come on, we're going to the shrine, and that's final!
Aaagh, I'm exhausted... I had no idea it was so high up in the mountains... It can't be much further, though, right?
Finally! Oh, thank goodness, we're here! Hey, Reimu, I brought the tour group! Sorry we're so late; Akyuu sidetracked us with a story. We have sake, though, and orange juice for me!
This shrine was founded many years ago, and at least one shrine maiden has lived here ever since-
Since eight hundred and seventy-two BC, Ms Kamishirasawa? Wow... Anyway, the Hakurei Shrine was once associated with academia, and people used to come here to pray for good exam results. No-one knows which god lives here, though.
Nue, you can't have met him! Will you please stop messing with me and just try to enjoy the tour?!
I'm sorry, Reimu, she isn't always like this...
Oh. She is always like this? Well, you know her better than me...
Wow, this lemonade is delicious! It almost makes the arduous climb up the mountain seem worth it, right?
Oh, shut up, Aya...
Right. Before we finish the tour, Reimu said she had a special thing she wanted to show off, and even I haven't seen it yet. Are you ready for this?
Um, Reimu... Is that a donation box on wheels?
Right... Well, she does do a great job fighting tirelessly to protect Gensokyo, so won't you please contribute something? I mean, the tour's only two hundred mon per head, you can afford a little...
Wait, where are you going?! You don't have to donate, it's just, it'd be nice! And-and you haven't even paid ME! I can't give tours at a dead loss! Don't do this to me!
Oh, is that tea for me? Thanks, Reimu. Just what I need to wash down all that lemonade...
