By this time, Claudia considers herself an adult and is wearing fully adult silhouettes and hemlines although the costumes emphasize her petite frame. Even though fashion in the 1930s went back to a more traditional waistline compared to the previous decade, the choice to put her in loose dresses rather than the more feminine formfitting silhouette of the day highlights her body's lack of maturity.

In the scene before she decides to leave home again she is once again in a dress reminiscent of her childhood sailor dress with a schoolgirl-esque collar and bow, showing us that even if she is an adult woman now and has taken on the responsibilities of one, she is still Louis's little girl in her heart.
