metafiction no matter the quality is fucking amazing. anything slightly self-referential is so good. bc when its done well its like WOW u really went off and said something really interesting and deep abt the power of art or whatever. and when its done badly its like WOW this is a complete self-own and u accidentally dissed urself but ur somehow also saying something even MORE interesting and even deeper abt the power of art or whatever bc this time its on accident so its like the power of the art defeated the author wtf.

and supernatural is right in the sweet spot where u can't tell whats on purpose and whats not, which makes it even better like it is a GOD TIER experience of metafiction. like have you SEEN atomic monsters?? u fully cannot even begin to comprehend what is happening in that episode until uve watched it, then watched the entire season, understood fan reactions to and criticisms of the finale of the show, understood the insane divorce between critical response/casual fan response vs more engaged fan response, and then rewatched the episode like im sorry no one does it like ben edlund and davy perez. theres a reason people are like "unparalleled media experience" and it is not just because misha collins is rumored to have a secret tumblr.
