Who could say no to a Marjorie Liu graphic novel? I sure can’t (and won’t).
Zuli was raised by mystical bird spirits in the branches of the Great Tree, she’s never been anywhere else. But, when something sinister threatens the magic of the tree, Zuli and her owl, Frowly have to get to the bottom of it. At the same time, Zuli may also find out who she is as well.
It’s an awesome story, and even more so the art by Teny Issakhanian is just… amazing. I loved it so much, and, I am solidly in the ‘I will read anything based on the story and the art is extra’ camp. But, this are was just amazing, and, I’m pretty sure that I’d have read a shopping list for text if this was the accompanying art. Awesome.

Bit late as it's been a everything is very behind kind of day. This week's boards are a random selection of panels by Tenyai (@ tenyai here on tumblr) which were posted a couple of years ago! A couple have not appeared otherwise.
Brief Recapitulation, Red Boots, and KLEB for the ask game!!
Brief Recapitulation - something you'd want to see explore more/explained
I want to see Douxie’s story and character be explored a lot more than it was. This probably comes a lot from seeing Teny Issakhanian’s art but I want to know more about him. The other main protagonists (Jim, Aja and Krel) had more time to develop. Hell, Aja and Krel literally have a whole Trollhunters episode. Gimme me more Douxie lore!
Also a bit stupid but I kind of wanna see what Douxie, Archie and Nari did in that year they were gone idk.
Red Boots - if you could make one piece of TOA merchandise, what would it be?
DOUXIE PLUSHIE BUT HE LOOKS AS GOOFY AS THE JIM ONE (jom) ⬇️
KLEB - random headcanon
Aja and Eli have designated days to wear Steve’s letterman jacket (that he has because I said so)
I read mostly manga, because I'm so picky about Western comics! But I've been keeping a running list of graphic novels I really liked, and I'm going to start sharing them here on this blog!
My tastes are often highly specific and choosy (I do NOT read romance, and I usually prefer any romantic relationships in the media I consume to be entirely ignorable or barely focused on) so most of these books have no romantic or sexual elements whatsoever. They are often fantasy, and the demographic I usually choose to read is often middle-grade, because I hate the aforementioned romantic nonsense perpetuated by YA fiction.
ANYway, that probably sounded very negative, so now let me sing the praises of a few things I like and recommend:
Wingbearer by Marjorie Liu and Teny Issakhanian: This one features a young girl in a fantasy setting, with a strong emphasis on winged species and birds. There is an adventure and mystery element to the plot and feels very Disney. The artist, Teny Issakhanian, has worked for Disney, so that’s no surprise. Her artwork is dynamic and gorgeous, full of color and life. This is going to be a series, and only the first book is out so far. Give it a try if you enjoy Disney and fantasy!
Salt Magic by Hope Larson & Rebecca Mock: Another fantasy story, this one is set just after WW1 and is a sweeping, whimsical standalone epic about a girl’s journey to save her brother and family from a witch’s curse. It’s a story about growing up and letting go as much as it is about the beautiful, magical elements. The art reminds me of Studio Ghibli, poignant and sensitive and cinematic.
Humpty Dumpty Lived Near a Wall by Derek Hughes & Nathan Christopher: A more unusual choice compared to the other two on this list, this is more of a picture book for older readers than a graphic novel. It is a creative spin on the popular nursery rhyme, and I won’t spoil it because it’s very fun. I think the art is the biggest draw for me, Nathan Christopher’s ink illustrations are GORGEOUS and rich with detail, and I highly recommend checking out the book just to stare at them.

Since one of my writing goals was to read more, I thought it would help to keep track of what I knocked off Mount Tsundoku. Here’s as good a place as any to post what I’ve read to keep me honest, and what my favourite reads were each month.

After seeing this was by Marjorie Liu, I had a feeling I was going to like it, and boy was I right. The story hooked me right from the get-go, and Teny Issakhanian's were beautiful. Zuli is immediately an utterly likable protagonist, and all of her companions—Frowly, Orien, even the brief encounters along the way—made for such a captivating story. Along with the characters, the world that was created for this story was super complex and felt very well thought out, which is especially nice since this was only the first book. This was definitely one of the best graphic novels I've read this year (rivaled only by Liu's other series) and I am so excited to see where they go with this story since the ending was such a cliffhanger.
Favorite Quote: We are all born at a crossroads, with many paths before us. And there is always a choice. We can choose to kneel down, or stand. We can choose to hide, or fight.

About Wingbearer
Zuli is extraordinary–she just doesn’t realize it yet. Raised by mystical bird spirits in the branches of the Great Tree, she’s never ventured beyond this safe haven. She’s never had to. Until now.

Still on the subject of Teny’s storyboards for Merlin’s farewell and the script for the same sequence there is one more mention I think is worth a show case namely this line at 0:58 of the animatic:
“You wrote it in Draconic! It was a pie recipe!”
This line makes an awful lot more sense when you remember that the only being we’re aware of that can read Ancient Draconic is Charlemagne an avid blood berry pie maker and is another hint along with knowledge of the Genesis Seals that he and Merlin knew one another and might have even been friends at least at some point.
But where DID the pie come from? Well we can thank Sean Wang also known as Tanginova for that one! The below image has been shrunk a bit as the original is huge, notice the bottom left of the second page?
Given everything going on it’d be very easy to miss in context so now you can have a proper shufty to your hearts content. The more you know :)

After reblogging Teny’s storyboards from Our Final Act how about a little more from the same episode for your day? At the time Aaron was kind enough to share the script of the sequence which does fall into a bit of a weird area where even when they’re public on twitter tumblr is a bit more eeeeh so to play it safe I’m going to link to the tweet in question without a preview instead.
You can find the three pages from the fringes of the Light Realm to Douxie’s reawakening here
As a bonus Teny talked a little about the process of making a sequence in the same thread which I’ve screenshotted below:
