WICKED’S REST CRYPTIDS
There are plenty of strange creatures that live in and around this seaside town, but some of them have been supposedly spotted enough by tourists and locals alike to make them famous. There's even a dedicated cryptid club. With this elevated awareness comes their very own personalized name, origin story, and maybe even a statue or two crafted in their likeness! And you can be sure that all the shops in town that cater to tourists will definitely have some cryptid merch for sale.
Wormy
Local to Harborside, Wormy is a massive serpentine sea monster that’s been spotted in and around the bay. You won’t usually catch a glimpse of it unless there’s a low fog hanging over the water: the creature seems to otherwise stay below the waves. That said, boat sonar will sometimes pick up something very large and very long without any other kind of visual, which is where most of the reports come from. From the few who claim to have seen it with their own eyes, they say it resembles a massive snake with an upward-curved snout, large fins, and barnacles attached to its hide. There’s also a rumor going around that Wormy is the one responsible for the missing boats that wander too close to Storm’s Eye Trench, but obviously there’s no proof of this.
Bigfeet
Yeah, you read that right. Wicked’s Rest has its very own version of sasquatch, the more appropriately-named Bigfeet. After all, Bigfoot makes no sense. It has two feet, doesn’t it? Some locals claim it’s the original sasquatch that got ripped off by someone who visited the town back in the early 1800’s, but there’s no way to be sure. Whichever one came first, one thing is certain: the tourists love this cryptid. While some sightings have been recorded coming out of Harmony Hill (which are probably a case of mistaken identity), the more likely habitat where Bigfeet can be spotted is, unsurprisingly, the Pines.
Giuseppe
The phrase “it’s like 90% legs” might not be something you expect to hear in the grocery store, but hear it you may: they’d be talking about Giuseppe, of course. A funny looking fella that’s rumored to live atop Serpent’s Flat, the creature is described by those that claim to see it from the viewing stations as tall, lanky, and… well, mostly made of legs. Just two, but the cryptid’s torso is evidently quite stout in comparison, and the distinct lack of arms makes the legs all the more starkly gigantic in comparison. The body is sort of an off-white color, another feature that makes it stand out against the blackened surface of the Flat. How did it get the name? Well, a local Italian restaurant owner claims that her family coined it decades ago when they built up a rapport with the creature after feeding it some meatballs in marinara. Maybe that’s why you’ll find the occasional plate of meaty treats placed around the edge of the Flat?
Gripwing
No cryptid bestiary would be complete without a terror of the skies, and for that Wicked’s Rest has Gripwing, who terrorizes the beach and seas around town. Gripwing is often said to be a giant butterfly, but no one can verify for sure due to its blazing speed as it soars the skies. However, Gripwing’s victims are distinct. They wash up on shore with their chest cavities sliced open with brutal incisions and the heart torn out. This has led to further rumors about blade-like antennae. Interestingly, some of these rumors seem to originate in a local siren colony with what seems like glee. If Gripwing were in actuality a large siren with extravagantly colored wings and ornate feathers, perhaps mistaking it for a butterfly would be understandable…
Moleman
Everybody knows about the mines. More than that, everybody knows to stay out of the mines. Collapsing tunnels are a real threat, but they’re not the only danger that lurks in the darkness. There is, of course, the Moleman—unimaginatively named by the board of tourism, it’s a creature that is said to dwell in the winding pathways of the immense underground system. Massive in stature and responsible for all the new tunnels that open up (and sometimes make sinkholes in people’s backyards), the Moleman is just that—half man, half mole. Grotesque in appearance, it’s no wonder he uses a disguise to walk among the normal townsfolk. People say that he’s tall with broad shoulders, scruffy and dirty, and perfectly blind. If you see someone like that in town, it may be best to avoid them.
Bessie
To nonlocals, Bessie is nothing more than a strange choice for a university mascot, but to the locals she’s so much more. Before records of Grotte de Fromage appeared, there were many reports of hearing cow-like wailing from up in the mountain peaks. In reality, Bessie does much resemble a highland cow with long red hair that flows in the wind and horns on her head that always appear to be bloodstained. Don’t worry, it’s not actually blood! Some strange supernatural molds can form in Wicked's Rest which could be the source of Bessie’s cheese cave creating powers. There are several stories attached to Bessie that you’re likely to hear from the college kids in town. Some will say her cries were for the loss of her calves and her hallucinogenic cheese was a form of protection. Others yet say this cow has much more devious plans. Why else would her horns be covered in blood? Aside from the fact they aren’t, but that isn’t nearly as fun a story to tell the freshman you’re trying to scare. While it is rare she ventures away from the depths of Grotte de Fromage, when she does come out of her cave, she eats the grass around her at an alarmingly fast speed for a cow. While mostly harmless, her size does pose a danger so approach with caution… and maybe don’t stand in her way when she’s eating if you happen to like your shoes or feet at all.
Gourdon
Gatlin Fields has their own curious cryptid that seems especially fond of the autumn festivities in that area, with a particular habit of showing up in the Maized and Confused attraction. It is a stout creature, no more than three feet tall, and seems to be covered in brownish-orange fur. Its favorite snacks are pumpkin seeds and mulled wine, the latter of which it can sometimes be seen clutching between its front paws as it trundles through the corn maze. It has a long, thick, furred tail that helps it stand upright when it has a warm beverage to carry around, though no one can say for sure where the heck it actually gets the wine from. Is someone feeding it? It’s possible—the creature seems friendly, if not desperately shy. Getting a picture of it is no easy task, though the Club Cryptid HQ claims to have gotten one on one of their trail cams. Gourdon can appear during other seasons as well, in both Gatlin Fields and the surrounding woods, though it might have a different sweet drink hugged to its chest.
Deepsnoots
Exclusively present in Jericho Burying Ground, Deepsnoots itself has never actually been seen. Many are familiar with the sight of a lump tunneling through the dirt underfoot, and some claim they’ve seen a strange appendage or mouth of sharp teeth, but none of these descriptions align with each other. What is known is that Deepsnoots moves quickly, and the rapid burrowing can scare off some of the hooligans that want to deface the headstones. Some think Deepsnoots is intentionally keeping the Grounds safe of crime, like some kind of guardian who ought to be celebrated, while others believe it’s motivated by the need to feed on old buried remains. No one has confirmed this. Or really anything. Deepsnoots might just be a regular mole.
Tendrilla
While Seven Peaks is steeped in Tendrilla reverence, even using a dedicated shrine atop each peak, there is little physical evidence that this entity exists. Within town there are many paintings and art pieces depicting her (she is typically thought of as feminine), and most seem to more or less agree on some key details. First, Tendrilla is huge, dwarfing her own shrines. Two, Tendrilla flies or hovers through the air in the same manner flying saucers are often depicted. Three, she emits a beautiful, ethereal glow, and can bathe an entire mountainside in her light. She is often associated with mushrooms due to the unique variety that grows up in Seven Peaks. Some say her tentacles sting, while others say they embrace with love. Some say she has sheet-like fins that blow in the breeze like sails, while others say she is streamlined and sleek. Whatever the case, Tendrilla inspires great devotion, and… well, there have been some huge, mysterious tentacles found in the mountains over the years.
Mothermoth
Sightings of Mothermoth are most frequently reported in Worm Row, especially in or near the Wormwoods. She’s suspected to be a species of giant silk moth, but most describe her as being about the size of a helicopter or small plane. The huge eye spots on her wings seem to blink. Under a full or nearly full moon, people say her wings take on a bright golden sheen, and some say they were blinded – even permanently – by the moonlight bouncing off them. This reflected light may account for the lack of good photos. Mothermoth’s wings shed golden powder-like scales, and these may have supernatural properties. No one knows anything about where she lays her eggs… or what hatches from them. Some supernatural scholars believe goggies, or a goggie variant, may be the larval stage of Mothermoth’s species. A small group of local entomologists have made it their life’s work to try and prove Mothermoth’s existence and catch her. They’re gonna need a bigger net.
Shaggarok
This ape-like figure has a profusely long coat of white hair that drags in a trail behind it, leaving markings in the dirt and snow. No one knows what it looks like underneath the coat, but people describe a pair of round, glowing eyes peering out from beneath it. Some describe the feeling of being followed before they saw Shaggarok. It has only been sighted in Seven Peaks, especially on snowy days and at high elevations. There are sporadic reports on each of the seven mountains. Most say Shaggarok approached them while they were in trouble in the mountains and freed them from being stuck or chased off an attacking beast. One report vividly describes Shaggarok sucking the hair off a monster after saving someone from it. In actuality, Shaggarok is likely an especially fluffy, white-coated kerashag that seems to be curious about people, though doesn’t like being seen. Even to those who suspect this to be the case, it’s up for interpretation whether that impacts its cryptid status.
The Lighthouse Keeper
You might hear those living along Wicked’s Rest’s coast whispering about “The Keeper”. This mysterious individual is said to haunt the lighthouses along the coastline, luring sailors to their deaths with its ghostly light. Some theorize the Keeper is the ghost of a former lighthouse keeper who drowned in a storm, now seeking to claim the lives of others who venture too close to its domain. Sightings of the Keeper often align with storms and shipwrecks, leading many to speculate that it can manipulate the sea. Despite its fearsome reputation, the Lighthouse Keeper is often depicted as a tragic figure by the locals, doomed to haunt the lighthouses for eternity. Some tales even suggest that it is trying to warn sailors of the dangers of the sea, in hopes of sparing them the same fate that befell it.
Caprifang
Described as a human-sized bipedal goat-like creature with huge fangs, it’s been said that Caprifang has been seen chasing down dangerous prey with immense speed before tackling it to the ground and sinking those uncharacteristic canines into its throat. Local aos sí fae seem to think Caprifang might just be a faun that’s gone mad from loneliness, but none of them have been able to coerce it into conversation long enough to find out. Most who claim to have spotted it say it lives up in the mountains, keeping to itself for the most part—until danger arises. In fact, the folks that believe the beast exists often feel better knowing it’s around the winding trails of the Peaks, for it seems to only have a taste for the blood of monsters, not people. Though if you’re a particularly malevolent sort, maybe you ought to watch out, too.
Zilch
Some say it’s the Dover Demon that has simply migrated north, curiously drawn to the impact crater out in Gatlin Fields. Others insist this is another creature entirely that only looks similar, but the one thing everyone can agree on is this: the thing that lurks around the crater is not from this world. It is an extraterrestrial, stranded on our planet either by choice or accident, doing its best to keep to itself. The humanoid has a very large head, rosy-tan skin, a lanky body, and most often scuttles around on all fours. Unlike the Dover Demon, however, the large glassy orbs that peer back at tourists from this creature’s head are not orange, but instead resemble the night sky—illuminated pinpricks of white light in an otherwise inky, blue/black backdrop. It is larger than its Massachusetts counterpart, standing a frightening seven feet tall when on its hind legs… or so they say. The most unnerving thing about this alien creature is the way folks claim that it spoke to them telepathically, screeching at them to leave the area inside their minds. Maybe it’s best to just stay away from the crater.
The Cleaver
Late at night on the main roads leading in and out of town, drivers might encounter a creature known as the Cleaver. If you’re wondering how it got this name, well, you needn’t wonder any longer—thought to be the victim of a hit-and-run accident, the Cleaver is a humanoid that is missing its lower half and can be seen dragging itself through the middle of the road by its hands, one of which is clutching a large scythe. If one swerves to miss it or even if they hit it dead on, the creature will clamber up onto the stopped vehicle, rip the driver free, and slice them in half with its weapon… just for sport. So if you’re ever driving somewhere and you see something laying in the middle of the road… just keep driving. Don’t stop, no matter what.
Thiccopotamus
At first glance, Thiccopatamus, the beast lovingly named by Wicked’s Rest Cryptid Club looks much like a normal hippopotamus aside from the strange orange glow around her. Add in the fact she’s about twice the size, it’s no wonder that the college kids call her “stupid thicc”. Thankfully, most of the club knows to observe her from afar with the cameras they set up around Wicked’s Rest’s State Park. Normal hippos are dangerous enough as is, but Thiccopotamus is even more so with her even larger stature and appetite. While her hippo cousins prefer vegetation and fruits around the river in the lands they’re native to, Thiccopatamus has been known to eat various types of meat, usually in the form of smaller, less fortunate creatures. Yeah, definitely keep your distance.

Starstruck || Charlie & Maggie
LOCATION: Tendrilla's Shrine TIMING: Current PARTIES: Charlie (@zombiebabysitter) & Maggie (@woveninstardust) SUMMARY: Charlie is trying to write new music while in a shrine, and Maggie realizes she knows him from his band. CONTENT WARNINGS: None!
“A bunch of us in town liked you guys. Thought you had good music. So…”
The rock formation Charlie sat in was apparently a shrine to some cryptid. Not that it mattered much to him, aside from the pretty rocking acoustics he was getting from them, so fuck yeah to this Tendrilla or whoever the fuck. He strummed gently to himself, trying to get words to come to him. His parents had been begging him to come back home to Portland after the incident, but Charlie didn’t want to. Something kept him here, trying to find those fuckers that bit him and killed his friends. Killed Gareth. He strummed a bit harder, his own anger clouding his judgment. The strumming turned to a twang, and he winced and stopped playing. This wasn’t writing music, this was abusing poor Gibson.
“Goodbye my friends, I wish that I could see you again.” Charlie sang under his breath as he strummed a chord. “From the smiles on your weary faces, to us strung out in far off places.” He stopped singing, it was getting too real. He could write something that was going to make him cry. He heard footsteps creep up on him, only to turn his head to see someone uncomfortably close to him.
“OH SHIT FUCK!” Charlie exclaimed, nearly dropping his guitar but recovering before he did so. “Uh… hi?” He then greeted it as more of a question than a greeting. “Welcome to casa de tendrilla, I guess. And my new recording studio. Think the tentacle lady will mind?” His eyes darted back and forth from his guitar to the very close girl. “Name’s Charlie.” He then spoke, hoping it would get her to take a step back.
_
The Tendrilla sights were one of Maggie’s favorite bits of weird Wicked’s Rest lore. The idea of a giant jellyfish that floated high above the town, emitting a gentle glow that coated entire mountainsides was enough to put the deified cryptid on the girl’s radar. Besides, if there was ever a place that seemed more prone to cryptids, it was Seven Peaks. That met with the warming spring weather was enough to drag Maggie out of the house and up the trails to Crown Heights.
It was usually a quiet place. Usually. If there were other people at the shrines, they were local faces. People who kept to themselves and who didn’t care much whether or not some girl from the town proper was there. But someone was playing the guitar. As long as Maggie had been going up to the Tendrilla shrines, she had never heard of someone offering music to Her. The curiosity bug bit her hard. Rather than leaving the guy to his music, she got closer. But as she crept along, certain things got very… familiar. She’d heard this dude play before- she had to have. She knew the playing style. And the voice…
She kept creeping closer and closer, trying to figure out why the fuck she recognized the voice when the guy turned and nearly dropped the guitar. And then it clicked. Zombie Babysitter. While the band had never gotten famous, they had been strangely popular within her little crowd of friends. And then when they up and died in some wild attack in HER TOWN, they somehow grew even more popular. She remembered the accident in the news, remembered how only one of the band members managed to survive. And now, standing in a shrine dedicated to a jellyfish god, she was staring at the sole survivor.
“Uuuuuuhhhhhh…” Her brain had simply ceased working. This had to be one really fucky dream. “Are you offering Her music? While doing the recording? Cuz it’s kind of a shrine up here. Some people might get pissy if you don’t… leave an offering… Charlie Hart from Zombie Babysitter who is standing at the Tendrilla Shrine…” Maggie said slowly, still trying to convince herself that it was all some strange dream. She’d probably fallen asleep behind the counter at Periwinkle Paints. She gave her arm a quick, sharp pinch to see if it would wake her up. It didn’t. “I’m Maggie- are the acoustics better up here or something?”
__
Charlie blinked owlishly at the girl, still holding onto his guitar like it would protect him from the girl’s stare. “Her?” He answered dumbly, sticking his neck out with a raised brow, clearly confused. “Oh, this is a…?” He looked around, suddenly feeling he wasn’t allowed to be in this shrine. Shrine? It just looked like a bunch of rocks to him. Well, it's better to let someone have their happiness and… weird culty religious beliefs than try to get them to see reason. After all, look at him and how he turned out. Tendrilla and he could probably get along.
“Oh, I’m not… recording. I’m just…” He frowned, staring down at his guitar. “Just playing, really.. Clearing my head.” She knew who he was, and it made him simultaneously flattered and a tad creeped out at the same time. Sure, he’d expected to be recognized when the band’s music suddenly catapulted to stardom. He’d gotten so many calls from reporters wanting his side of events, knowing if he’d release a solo album now that his bandmates were gone, forgetting that he was a fucking person who had lost all his fucking friends. Vultures, all of them.
“Nice to meet you, Maggie… fan of Zombie Babysitter who likes to get close to people.” Charlie awkwardly stuck a hand out to her, offering it to shake. “You, uh, know about this Tendrilla thing?” He asked, eyes looking around what Maggie had told him was a shrine. “Like, should I…?” He took out an earring, dropping it onto the ground. “Offering? That thing wasn’t cheap. I hope she likes moissanite.” He saluted the earring before turning his attention back over to Maggie again. “So you know about… about my band.” He swallowed thickly. It was sometimes hard to talk about the band in the past tense. He wasn’t the band's lead singer, but he’d often been backup vocals on most of the tracks and when they played live.
He shook off the feeling of being creeped out, letting the feeling of being recognized wash over him. “You uh, you liked our songs, huh? Sorry that it’s uh, just me now.” He looked down at his feet, then back up at the girl. “But, like… hey, a newfound appreciation for being alive, am I right?” His voice when an octave higher, and he waved his hands around in the air. “Yaaaay…” He spoke in a quiet, still higher-pitched voice.
___
“Her. Tendrilla. Tentacle Lady.” How the hell did people go places and not know the lore? It was mind-boggling to her that someone would take the trek all the way up to Crown Heights to play the guitar near some standing stones as if it was just someplace up in the mountains to be used. It took all her strength not to launch into a full history of Tendrilla and Seven Peaks. Friends were not made by immediate info-dumping. Apparently. Instead, Maggie gave a quick jerk of her head in the direction of a carving that had begun to fade from constant exposure to harsh weather of a massive jellyfish hovering over seven distinct peaks. She figured that would have to do as a means of explanation. “People up here treat Her a little like a god. Better to be respectful about it, just leave something as an offering before you go… The moissanite’s probably fine.”
She took a good step back, giving Charlie his space. Her shoulder rose a little, an awkward sheepish stance. Like she didn’t quite know what to make of the situation now that it was real. “Yeah. Uh. Sorry. About what happened to them. And for getting close, I just was trying to listen and get closer to the- you know-” A painted-blue nail pointed in the direction of the stones. “So I could draw ‘em.”
It was a horrible thing to lose friends. Maggie had watched poor Isa go through hell after what happened to Ruth- though, she supposed, it was different because Isa went to jail for something she hadn’t done. Charlie was still without his band, but was probably living with some survivor’s guilt. Her nose scrunched as he made his apologies. “You’ve got nothing to apologize for. What you went through is…” Her voice died, tapering off. What right did she have to say anything?
Rocking back on her heels she turned in the direction of the nearest of the stones. Maggie you weirdo what the fuck was that… The little voice inside her mind was screaming and scolding herself for every little strange moment. “A bunch of us in town liked you guys. Thought you had good music. So…”
___
Tendrilla was a god around here. Okay, not the weirdest thing he’s heard in his life, but it was definitely fucking up there. “Right, a god.” Charlie stepped back toward the entrance but then remembered his pact to himself. To his dead friends. So he took a few steps forward, getting closer to the etching of the jellyfish. “That’s fucking weird, what’s she all about?” He asked the girl, who seemed to know a lot. He knew it was like opening a can of worms, but who cared? If he learned something freaky about this place outside what he already knew, what could be the harm in it?
“You draw? What kinda stuff you draw?” Charlie asked, not wanting to linger on the topic of his dead bandmates and best friends. Whenever he tried to sleep, he saw Lind’z lifeless eyes staring at the sky. He didn’t need to dwell on it when he was awake. “You listen to us? That’s… kinda cool, actually. It’s always nice to meet someone that appreciates our music, you know?” He gave a half-smile that almost reached his eyes, but the pain of thinking about his friends won out, keeping it from meeting his eyes.
“We actually got a letter to our P.O. box about this place, said that they would love to meet us.” He explained. “Plus I got a pal that lives in town. She starred in our music video.” Of course, Charlie wished they’d never received that letter. Wish they’d never considered coming to a place like Wicked’s Rest, where his friends would always rest. He blinked, then pulled out his notebook and wrote that down. “Wicked’s Rest, where my friends will always rest…” He muttered to himself as he jotted it down, then put the book back onto his guitar case. “Well, between you and me, we recorded one last album. Was supposed to release in the summer, but… now it’s up to me to know what to do with it. Might hold onto it for a while before releasing it. Was supposed to be called Wild Child.” He told her with a twinkle in his eye.
It was strange, meeting someone whose creations you admired. Music wasn’t Maggie’s language, it wasn’t her outlet, but it didn’t stop her from appreciating the act of creation that was inherent to his craft. It was an art that absorbed another sense entirely- one that her pencils and paints would never be able to meet. But they could both provoke thought, provide entertainment. But art can be viewed away from the artist, as music can be listened to away from the musician. To meet a creator gave new details. Maggie loved details.
“Tendrilla is… well…” How did one describe a deified cryptid? It was much easier to explain the Thiccapotamus (description: it’s a thicc-ass glowing hippo) or Guisseppe (description: legs for days and really likes spaghetti and meatballs). But Tendrilla was mysterious, even to the girl who made it her mission to know these things. She tried not to cringe at the musician’s choice of words (fucking weird in the presence of the shrine felt a bit rude). “It depends who you talk to about her… It’s not like a deity that you couldn’t see- she’s a corporeal, giant floating jellyfish… that glows. Some people say if she holds you, it stings, but the folks up here say her embrace is gentle, warm… Like being wrapped up in a soft light.”
Maggie was more than grateful that the conversation turned towards art. She could show art. She didn’t mind critiques or comments on it. Talking to people who were skeptical about cryptids made her twitchy… Taking the moment to breathe, the girl dug around in her bag and fished out a well-worn sketchbook before holding it out. “A little bit of everything, but mostly creatures and bits of folklore from around town.” She paused a moment before awkwardly adding “I’d get it if you didn’t release it- it’s nice to keep memories for yourself sometimes…”
Listening as Maggie explained Tendrilla, Charlie nodded his head slowly. “Got it. Giant floating jellyfish that’s been deified.” He spoke, making sure he got all the facts right. “Cryptids are neat, I guess.” He shrugged a shoulder, wanting to dismiss the idea that this thing could be real. But then again, if he could get bitten by a zombie, then anything was possible, wasn’t it? “I could go for a gentle and warm hug…” He muttered, deciding that this Tendrilla couldn’t be that bad after all.
“Yo, this is good!” Charlie told the girl as she flipped through her sketches. “You’ve got a real talent for this.” He thought for a minute, then grinned. “Wild Child already has an album cover, but I plan on making some music on my own. I’ll have to figure something out with my manager and you could do the album art whenever that happens. If you’re interested, of course.” He quickly tacked on, eyes wide that he was overstepping boundaries. “Maybe it’ll be an album about this place and how it’s rapidly changed my life.” He mused, looking at Gibson with a wobbly smile.
“I think I will. I owe it to the fans and my bandmates’ families.” He then spoke, voice soft and somewhere else. “Just weird once it’s the last thing they ever put out.” Charlie added, kicking the stone under his feet. “Everything feels weird, though. Don’t think there’s any getting over that, though.” He rubbed at his nose, then sighed. “Guess I should stop playing at the Tendrilla shrine, huh?”
She blinked, wondering if she’d heard him correctly. Album cover art. He wanted her, a stranger he just met to potentially make album cover art for a future album. Maggie tried to act non-plussed, but her jaw dropped a little. “Uhhh…. Yeah! Yeah, no I could definitely do that for you, if you wanted. Definitely… totally very interested…” Shut up, Magnolia…
A little wave of guilt lapped over her. He’d lost so much. Friends, bandmates, companions… How lonely it must feel to be the sole survivor of a tragedy. And here she was, being excited about drawing something for a fellow artist. “I… um…” The girl’s voice was so soft, fingers snarling and locking into one another. “I’m sure that they’re proud of you for creating, still.” It was an artist's greatest gift and greatest burden: those that remained created. It’s the way it had always been.
Maggie welcomed the change in topic. It was a relief to talk about Tendrilla once more. Even if they were only ‘cool, he guessed’... “I don’t think she’d mind. It’s an offering, in its’ own little way. You’re giving music. That might be enough…. But I’ll leave you to your music.” She took a few steps back towards the path. “It was nice to meet you, Charlie.”
Charlie grinned brightly as Maggie shared her interest in collaborating, and Charlie nodded his head enthusiastically in reply. “Glad to hear it! I’ll be in touch when that time comes, then. Maybe even let you listen to everything first so you can really nail down the vibes.” The smile faded a bit as he thought of his friends who he would never make music with again. It was bittersweet to continue without them.
“Yeah, I’ve got reason to believe that they would be.” Charlie gave a sad smile and looked down to his guitar. “I owe it to them to keep going, y’know? Not giving up just because I’m too afraid to move forward. I don’t know if I’ll ever be in a band again, but… I dunno. A solo career sounds so daunting, you know?” He shrugged his shoulders, patting his guitar a bit.
“Maybe I’ll scoot out then, don’t want to insult an eldritch deity that I don’t understand. Or the people who follow her.” He pulled a face before pulling his guitar case toward himself and packing the instrument away. “Yeah, it was great to meet you, Maggie! I’ll see you around.” He gave a small wave, happy to meet someone new who shared in the creative process. Suddenly, he didn’t want to be left to his music, feeling an itch to do something reckless. It was easier than processing his feelings.

Note
Do you believe in the local cryptids? Which ones, if not all of them?
I wouldn't say I necessarily believe in them, certainly not all of them but I do have a soft spot for them, especially Tendrilla, Wormy, and Mothermoth. Bessie, too, of course- I can't forget Bessie.
Growing up, I always thought it was really cool that we had our very own cryptids in Wicked's Rest. My dad used to love telling me stories about them
I actually got a Tendrilla tattoo down at Seven Serpents when I was in college. My mother was not happy It's definitely the coolest tattoo I have.

Chris Wood is an artist who works using light and reflections however she works with sculpture. I find her work very interesting and I really enjoy the second work piece. The reflections I think are really interesting and inspired me to create my work colourful and exciting. Using dichroic glass light hits the surface and disperses through to create a sea of colours.

Welcome to our weekly round-up! We do these every week to provide plot drops, highlight starters posted that week, and share other information about the setting. Anyone is welcome to use these bullet points in starters, plots, anons etc. Also let us know if you want us to include one of your setting-related plots in here for next week by sending us a bullet point!
What’s new in town?:
Further mining efforts by EER have left Wicked’s Rest in a state of disarray as the anomalous sludge has covered whole blocks of land. People and animals alike have become encased in it as well, unable to escape as it slowly hardens around them. Check out our final plot of the week of Season 1 for ways to interact!
In honor of the holiday season and the awe-spiring Tendrilla, the Grimm Family Ski Lodge is hosting a small craft party in its game room. It's $5 for entry and craft supplies. The wreaths are cleverly shaped like Tendrilla with little pine spruce tentacles. While you're there, the staff highly recommends taking a ride on the gondola for a view of the lights or hitting the slopes!
While UMWR's football team may not be making it to the playoffs anytime soon, the Big Cheese is still running specials throughout the month leading up to bowl games. From wings to half off games, they're making for an affordable night out this college season. One bartender, Jack, has offered to throw in a free bar tab if anyone can beat Big Brie's score in ski ball.
It's the most wonderful time of the year: santauff mating season! Some locals recommend regular sauna visits to beat the "lingering shivers" of the season... which isn't terrible advice to keep a wintery weasel away.
Starters:
Regan has ended up with a larger than zero amount of mice and is looking for tips on caring for and travelling with them
It's not the happiest day of the year for Leila (undead probs, are we right?) so the Party Thrifter will be closed
While Lil is tending to a family emergency, she asks that you please reach out to do her pal Jamie if you needed her for anything business related
Felix needs to know... was young Kurt Russell hot?
If you were hoping for fresh baked bread this month, Jonas is letting everyone know they have to look somewhere besides Bread Cemetery since they will be closed for the month... it dough be like that sometimes
Zofia is taking a page from the youth's and making quite the entrance
Leticia wants everyone to know that goats are welcomed at Vinyl Countdown and there's even a 25% discount if she gets to pet them

What’s new in town?:
Strange crystals have overtaken the town, and touching them creates a “link” to the doomed people of Bleak Point. Some may find they have a stranger influencing their actions, while others might find their emotions amplified. The least fortunate may transform into creatures from the mines and terrorize the town. Come join the chaos of our latest POTW!
It's summer time and the charming tree worms are giving birth to their young. This means their hunts have become more frequent and several people have gone missing under trees in populated areas.
Looking for something strange and unusual? Or trying to sell something of the same variety? A new market is popping up around town and it's a little bizarre. It never seems to be in the same place twice!
Tendrilla has blessed us all! There has been a sighting of a massive mushroom around the woods. Everyone is hiking and trying to get a peek, which has led to some missing persons and strange side effects.
Starters:
Something is off with this barstool and Bridie has questions
Anyone else seeing these gopher holes around town? Mateo has questions
Chaisai is looking for any and all ideas how to repair the rides at Bigfeet's Adventureland that are blocked by the crystals
If you're good a photography Ren is looking for tips
If anyone has seen a very specific necklace, please let Regan know right away
Looking to adopt a puppy? Hit your mime guy Kaden up!
If you could stop skinny dipping in front of the lighthouse, Marcus would really appreciate it
Send your best chicken noodle soup recipe to Clement!
It's summer time and Psyche is decidedly over everyone littering on the trails
For liability reasons, Dis is letting everyone know to avoid the rose garden a Elysium as its been overtaken by crystals
Hit Winter up with any information you have on being able to use the university library or other good spots in the area
You know what's great? The Mines. Go see Teddy, there's ham!
Teagan is trying to master the art of a perfect cup of coffee so send any and all tips her way
Does anyone know what could be causing Milo's issues with chunks of lost time?

Name: Keeper Species: Human (Non-powered) Occupation: Caretaker of shrines Status: OPEN
Your family has been responsible for the safekeeping of some of Wicked’s Rest’s shrines for many decades. From the ones dedicated to the great Tendrilla atop each peak, to mysterious structures in the thick woods, you cherish them all. But you frequently cross paths with some unusual characters at these sites, and see things that you probably weren’t meant to see. Maybe you’ve made contact with one of the town’s cryptids or maybe you’ve become embroiled in a werewolf pack conflict. You could have even inadvertently soaked up the magic from a coven’s ritual. You don’t know if others in your family understood the risks or suffered through them as you have, but your experience has either made you even more protective of the shrines... or has you questioning what you’ve dedicated your life to, if you can’t count on Tendrilla or some other power to solve your problems.

NAME: Massive, Mobile Mushroom
ALSO KNOWN AS: MMM
RARITY: ★★★★☆
THREAT LEVEL: ★★★☆☆ | While they can leave large areas of dead forest and critters in their wake, their spores don’t travel far and they themselves aren’t a physical threat.
HABITAT: Found only in heavily forested areas. These mushrooms can’t seem to propagate in towns or cities, which has led to them becoming increasingly rare.
DESCRIPTION: Many mushroom species are known for their impressive network of mycelium which far outsize their above ground appearance. Massive, mobile mushrooms (MMMs) are the reverse: they have a relatively small root system but a massive stem and cap. They can grow so tall they exceed the height of trees within the same forest, poking out above them. While they come in many colors, their caps are usually covered in spiny growths making them unpleasant to the touch. MMMs wouldn’t be so problematic if they were just big mushrooms, though – they drag themselves along the ground, albeit slowly, feeding on plants and animals, consuming everything in their path and leaving a trail of destruction behind them.
The mushroom is also capable of releasing toxic spores from its cap. While these spores are an irritant on their own, they become deadly when mixed with water, and will kill other organisms. The MMM will then rapidly decompose any remains it leaves nearby, absorbing them as energy. MMMs will often bide their time during dry weather, building up their spores, only to release them the next time it rains. Due to the increasing rarity of MMMs, some in town believe the appearance of one in the woods is a blessing from Tendrilla.
ABILITIES: The spores of the massive, mobile mushroom have a variety of effects on other organisms, depending on length and type of exposure. On less humid days, direct contact with the spores may only cause a rash and temporary trouble breathing, or possibly some more supernatural symptoms of exposure. If it’s humid or raining, the spores are lethal when inhaled. Due to their size, a number of smaller organisms have adapted to living inside of the gills of the MMM. These critters pose an additional risk to anyone nearby – or they may be harmless. There are some reports of bioluminescent moths and rodents that whip their punishingly long tails out at people who walk underneath the mushroom.
WEAKNESS: Aside from any territorial creatures that live within, the mushroom is not going to pose any kind of unexpected threat to those who want to kill it. It’s huge with a thick stem, so it will take a great deal of force to knock it over, necessitating chainsaws and other heavy duty tools. Care should be taken to avoid spores that shake out when it falls. MMMs only move at night, and can’t move across rocky terrain. The undead are immune to their spores. While they are mobile like their name implies, they move pretty slowly, covering up to a quarter of a mile per day.

NAME: Crown Heights
LOCATION: Seven Peaks
Seven Peaks has a small population owing to its terrain, but those who grow up in the mountains often spend little time in the town proper, and as a result, a unique culture has prospered. The centerpiece of this culture is reverence for Tendrilla, an enormous sky jellyfish said to hover over the town, illuminating those underneath. The mountain folk often pay their respect to Tendrilla at Crown Heights, a series of seven shrines with one atop each peak. They don’t know how the shrines got there. In fact, the shrines have the look of ancient ruins recycled throughout the years. But Resters are mostly satisfied with the assumption that a wiser, ancient people also recognized the cnidarian glory of Tendrilla. Regardless, the ruins have been built upon enough over the years to have truly evolved into shrines with a flavor of ancient devotion that earns respect from any tourist.
These ruins are not, in fact, ruins. At one point, they may have just been an assortment of random rocks that looked kind of shrine-like. Local historians insist this is the case. Most don’t believe it.
Crown Heights consists of seven shrines, one on each peak. None of them look especially alike, and they each have their quirks. What they do share are mysterious jellyfish-like etchings carved into some of the rock faces and even sheer cliffs near the shrines. A couple have an uncanny resemblance to Stonehenge.
Every once in a while a very long tentacle-like object appears sprawled out by one of the shrines. Those who touch it get stung with such ferocity their fingers fall off.
The same mushrooms that grow in Eternal Light Cemetery also grow around the shrines, giving them an eerie, neverending glow. Must just be the altitude.
Sometimes offerings are left on the shrine for Tendrilla. These can range from freshly cooked fish to body parts to jellyfish effigies.
There was one year when the shrine on Mount Ime was inaccessible, and the mountain folk thought it would be safe to skip offerings for that year. Never had Seven Peaks experienced such disaster and loss of life that year – avalanches, bear attacks, “bear” attacks, and freak snow squalls in the summer. When the path to the shrine was finally cleared, things got better.
Some who claim they were former skeptics have reported feeling compelled to bring an offering to any one of the shrines. Those who have made these claims all recall being somewhat entranced with the lights and feeling the intense need to bring something to one of the shrines. One particularly insistent local, Lola, insists that she hadn’t even known the shrines existed when she found herself hiking the trek up to Chattering Peak. They could be telling tall tales, but maybe there is something to all this Tendrilla worship.

NAME: Shimmering Sky Bar
LOCATION: Seven Peaks
For those who want the breathtaking views of the ski lift ride without all the adrenaline of hitting the slopes, the Shimmering Sky Bar is a great place to visit. The second to last stop up on the ski lift stops outside this luxurious bar and lounge that is nearly entirely windows. From both inside the bar and the many seats on the deck, there are 360 degrees of mountain views, including a prime view of Eternal Light Cemetery. Don’t even mention Tendrilla to the owner, Caleb, who firmly stands that the flickering lights in the sky are much like the Aurora Borealis. He loves that the lights make his bar even more popular, Caleb is staunchly against the cryptid gimmicks other business owners use to make money.
Unintentionally, the bar is one of those rotating lounges. No one really knows why or how it rotates around on solid ground like that, but Caleb still uses it to boost his business in advertisements. Don’t worry if it seems like it’s spinning a little too fast sometimes. You probably just had one too many cocktails.
The bar itself has a marble top and cushy leather seats that make it a nice and cozy place to enjoy the views. Most importantly, the bar and lounge are warm, a stark difference from the temperature high in the mountains most of the year.
Hot drinks tend to be the best sellers. From hot ciders to mulled wine and hot toddies, there is always at least one mug of a warm alcoholic beverage on the bartop whenever it is open with patrons.
Given how beautiful the venue is, it’s not uncommon to spot a couple getting engaged on any given evening.
On Friday and Saturday evenings, a pianist that locals have dubbed Dapper Dan plays the grand piano at the lounge’s center. His tunes are oddly soothing, but that’s most likely just his musical prowess.
Despite the owner not believing in the supernatural, the bar itself is accommodating to most species depending on which bartender you get. At worst, you just might get odd looks if you ask if certain things have water or low iron contents.

NAME: Eternal Light Cemetery
LOCATION: Seven Peaks
Sitting atop Mount Ime in Seven Peaks is perhaps one of the most beautiful sights in Wicked’s Rest, despite it being a cemetery. The Eternal Light Cemetery emits a bright glow seen from anywhere in town. Though visible in the daytime (and hard to look at, as if gazing into the sun) it can be best appreciated at night, when Seven Peaks is dark enough to see every star in the sky and the glow runs down the mountain. Those who are religiously inclined may think it’s the heavens shining down on the cemetery, and those who were raised with some of Wicked’s Rest’s more flavorful traditions may assume it’s Tendrilla, the giant sky jellyfish that illuminates everything it floats over. The truth is likely more mundane: scientists at the university have determined that there are a lot of bioluminescent mushrooms growing at this altitude. But can they really give off that much light…?
Eternal Light Cemetery is a popular burial place and one of the newer cemeteries in town. It’s just a little inaccessible. However, most people don’t mind taking the scenic gondola ride up to the grounds. It only takes about an hour, and there’s a nearby lodge and a couple of restaurants and stores for those wanting to stay an overnight or two on the mountain.
Some vampires really enjoy the isolated quarters Eternal Light affords them, and there are plenty of visitors they can chow down on without raising an alarm. The glow of the mushrooms doesn’t irritate them at all, but it does affect their eyesight in the long-term, essentially giving these vampires night blindness outside of the cemetery. For whatever reason, this also seems to let them stay out in the sunlight a little longer than most vampires.
Whether the mushrooms are completely implicated in the glow or not, they certainly have a hold on the cemetery. Their underground mycelium network is so extensive and worms into each coffin to encase the remains. Sometimes it seems as though the mushrooms glow a little brighter when a mourner talks to their deceased loved one.
Fae adore these mushrooms, and will either collect some of them for various uses or will spend some time around them in the cemetery. They don’t seem to make fae especially chaotic like “fairy rings” do, but the mushrooms do allow them to better focus their abilities. Unfortunately, this effect is lost outside of the area the mushrooms grow in.
Wicked’s Rest’s teenagers will sometimes harvest some of the mushrooms and try to pass them off as a new or interesting psychedelic. The mushrooms aren’t actually psychedelic at all, but they might cause light to pour out of every bodily orifice for a couple of days.
