For the last dozen years teens from Virginia's award-winning Hampton Roads Youth Poets have participated in @BraveNewVoices — the world's largest youth poetry slam — alongside hundreds of voices from across the nation and beyond. In 2019 New Orleans artist and activist Brandan Odums, aka BMike, traveled to Virginia Beach and collaborated with Teens With A Purpose ( @TWPTheMovement ) to paint this wall on Virginia Beach Blvd for the @SomethingIntheWater festival. BMike says as soon as he met these amazing young people he knew he had to paint them—the perfect complement to the amazing verse of the Hampton Roads Youth Poets. @bmike2c/

Today we dedicated it! @artbychavonne worked with us on the design and ultimately painted the mermaid. @nanyakarum designed/painted the face and logo. Their collective efforts made this beautiful teenage mermaid possible. She will be placed outside our building on the corner to greet everyone as they come inside in the coming weeks. Corporal Miles James. Linocut. By Quinton Jennings-Sherman, aka Q5. 2018. This gentleman was a slave from what is now known as VA Beach that joined the Army at Fort Monroe on Dec. 28th, 1863. He was assigned to Company B, 36th Infantry United States Colored Troops. At the Battle of New Market Heights (Chaffin's Farm), he took heavy shrapnel to the left arm resulting in mutilation. In spite of this...he continued to load and discharge his weapon with his good arm in order to help his fellow soldiers advance. They were within 30 yards of enemy territory as he did this. Parents, are you tired of the lying, bickering, arguing, fighting, challenging that is happening between you and your children? Teenagers are you tired of feeling controlled, untrusted, unheard, unseen and not respected? Do you feel safe and loved in your home? Parents are you tired of your children breaking the rules? Teenagers do you think the rules are unfair? Do you even know what the rules are? Well as parents we typically don't know what the rules are as well. We certainly don't spend enough time thinking about them? We surely don't tell our children why they are rules to begin with and the reasons behind the rules. Then when the rules are broken parents just make up a punishment. What does punishment get us anyways? It makes our children angry. It stresses the parents out. Nobody is happy because we had to punish them and they are punished. So what is the point of all this. To learn a lesson? What lessons? The point is that life is a game and if our children don't know the rules how are they supposed to win. We are setting them up for failure and dooming ourselves to raising an anxious child which equals a stressed out parent. I am in the final stages of completing this book. 15th Annual Teen Event: No Holding Back – A Multimedia Production! For the 15th consecutive year, Teens With a Purpose will deliver a youth led, youth inspired community teen event. This year’s original production will take the audience on a multimedia journey through time from conception to growth

and development of this youth empowerment organization paralleled with the journey of four “wanderers”, young people who came to TWP searching for a place to belong, bringing with them their troubles, their talent and their potential to change. They ultimately triumph over adversity. The wanderer also represents the developmental assets and TWP’s key vehicle of change and positive peer influence. Each segment of No Holding Back highlights a different set of circumstances teens’ face. It represents different roads to resolution played out in song, dance, drama, fashion, photography and poetry. When they are angry. Put the heat on you. Yes. It will blow their mind. Ask them where you are feeling them as a parent and just give them the space to answer this question they never heard before. Are you a punisher? We’re you parents punishers? When you were punished how did that make you feel? Angry, unworthy, small, powerless? How do you think your kids feel when you punish them? Maybe the same? Punishment results in everyone being angry and frustrated including us as parents. Aren’t you sick of doing the same thing over and over? When children are punished they think sometimes have revenge fantasies. How can I get back at them for taking my phone away from me. It never ends well. What about if you tried something different? How about next time they break a rule or exhibit poor behavior you ask them to help you discover a solution to the problem. Because that’s all it is. A problem that needs a solution. Give a try...it couldn’t hurt and more than the punishment. Depression is challenging especially when we as parents aren’t sure what to do. There is no guidelines for helping our children. We see them struggling and constantly wonder what is going on in their mind that could be so bad. They shut us out because taking about it could make them feel worse or maybe they they are ashamed because they feel alone in their sorrow. As parents we must always be vigilant and keep an eye on them but be very careful not to be too intrusive because that too could have sever consequences as they may feel pressured to get better and them having no idea how. So take a step back and give them some space, give them a boost and give them some of what you are going through or went through at their age. These are some of the first steps in building rapport with them so maybe they will open up and share their challenges with you. If anyone has had some success with helping their children with depression would you please let us know what you did. Let’s try and parent out of the box on this one. In the box are therapists and medications.
