Realized I never posted here! We added a new pup to our home. Her name is Cinder, and she is a tamaskan dog.
Tamaskans are a breed of dog that is bred to look like wolves. They typically have low or no wolf content. The breed is young and still in development, and is managed by the ITR in Europe, and the TDR here in the US.
Tamaskans not registered through either of these groups are likely not true tamaskan dogs and are potentially from puppy mills. Only ITR/TDR registered breeders are selling actual tamaskan dogs.
To prevent genetic bottlenecks, outcrosses are still done here in the US fairly frequently.
*Blue eyes are a disqualifying fault in Tamaskan dogs. Cinder has blue eyes and therefore cannot ever be bred, which is fine with us. While I love the breed, I didn’t feel we were in the right place to be contributing in that regard.
**Cinder was an outcross litter that happened before the parents had finished their health tests. Since they did pass, the pups were granted X-tier registration.

Afaik we don’t have any real wolfdogs here in Australia, but a fb acquaintance has been bragging about her new Lyksos (?) puppy. Apparently it’s a brand new breed here and they’re “dogs in wolfsuits”. From what I could see on their website, the dogs are mostly malamute X German shepherd. The breeder claims the dogs are all fully health and genetic tested, but the facial structure of the dogs make me think of those white tigers with Downs Syndrome (I don’t think that’s what it is but I can’t remember properly right now). Just needed to share cos I don’t understand the obsession with wanting to own a wolf…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I do find it hard to believe that these two different dogs aren't [very] low contents. This is off the website of one of the Lykos breeders listed on the official Lykos website. I went looking for the exact breed mix and once again found a lot of coy "oh you know, gsd, husky, and related breeds..." wording but no actual list. I'm wondering if this is similar to the Tamaskan/Utonagan/Northern Inuit situation, where Sarloos Wolfhound or Czech Wolfdog was used and they are technically [very] low contents as a result. Or if they used those aforementioned wolfalikes, which vary by line but do have some low content wolfdog mixed in there, and again thus have created more [very] low content wolfdogs.
Does Australia allow the import of the four recognized purebred wolfdog breeds, or those wolfalikes I mentioned? If so, then I think I've figured it out.
I'm not really seeing anything that looks like the super inbred white tigers. A lot of photoshop on the eyes though.

Here’s several moths worth of having a service dog hyperfixation! Do keep in mind that everything I know is based on American laws and the ADA, so I don’t know how it’d go in the boiling isles cjsmckksox
Therapy animals are animals that provide some sort of support to people in specific spaces, such as schools or hospitals. There’s a huge range of animals that can be therapy animals, the most common being dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, and even birds (in the US, there’s some criteria that determines what kind of animal can become one). Organizations will usually require these animals to pass some sort of test before they can start serving. I was actually training my dog alongside a NGO so he could serve as a therapy animal in pediatric hospitals, but then the pandemic hit and we were forced to give up :P
Emotional support animals are usually prescribed by psychiatrists and are indeed owned by the people they provide emotional support to (they’re covered under the Fair Housing Act in the US), said people not necessarily being disabled. They can also range from a variety of animals and don’t have to be trained to do anything specific. “Emotional support animal” is more of a legal/medical definition, so there’s no way to know how or if anything I’ve said could be applied in the Boiling Isles. That being said, I still love the idea of an emotional support palisman for Hunter, regardless of human definitions being applicable or not lol
Unlike the other two, service dogs strictly have to be dogs (even tho mini horses are actually also valid if dogs aren’t a possibility). They have to task trained in order to aid their owners, who do have to be disabled. Any breed is a valid breed, so I like to picture Hunter with some wolf-like dog like a northern Inuit dog or a tamaskan (even tho both are high-energy dogs and might be hard to train). Service dogs can be taught tasks to aid people with a range of disabilities, be it physical or psychiatric. So like, Hunter could use one as a mobility aid or teach them things that could help with his PTSD (picture a dog telling him to lay down suddenly and just laying down on him for deep pressure therapy). They can follow their owners anywhere they go, as their access is required by law according to the ADA. Even tho the ADA wouldn’t valid in the boiling isles, witches seem to be allowed to take their palisman wherever, so I don’t think anyone would stop him if he just had a very polite dog lmao
Anyways I’m 100% drawing him with a service dog I need this in my life
Amazing, Thank You. Yep, for sure a service dog is the best fit for him, perfect!

There’s a wolfdog in Prey? I haven’t seen it yet but that makes me want to see it more!
yes! i’d say either a wolfdog or a tamaskan dog. it does get… ripped apart. but. i still find the canines in prey really fascinating!
Tumblr media
here’s prey’s wolf. there’s a couple glaring differences i can see when compared to a real wolf — mostly that the snout is the wrong shape, the ears are too pointy, and it’s too small (both in the sense that it’s too short and it’s not stocky enough). it also doesn’t have quite as much fur around the face and the eyes are a bit off, which leads me to believe it’s either a mid-low content wolfdog:
Tumblr media
or a tamaskan dog:
Tumblr media
here’s a wolf for reference:
Tumblr media
something i also found very interesting was that because this movie is set in ~1700s comanche territory (out west), it’s likely that in-universe, naru’s dog is a pre-contact dog breed!
Tumblr media
^ her actor’s name is coco, btw. i believe she’s just a standard mutt, which is a little disappointing — i’d have loved for them to use a carolina dog — but understandable. they did a great job casting her, though! it’s nice to see that they didn’t choose a recognizable “breed” and instead picked a dog that’s similar to surviving pre-contact dog breeds.

Can I own a wolf in Australia?
Owning a wolf in Australia is illegal. In fact, even importing dog breeds that have any wolf content in them is highly restricted. Australian law does not allow the entry of any domestic or non-domestic dog hybrids. This means wolfdogs such as Saarloos Wolfdog, Czechoslovakian Wolfdog are not able to be brought into Australia. While some dogs with wolf content do exist in Australia as they were imported prior to the ban, they are few and far between.
What about a pedigree wolf look dog?
The Australian National Kennel Council (ANKC) and Master Dog Breeders and Associates (MDBA) are the only two formal dog breeding associations in Australia that recognise pure breeds and breeds in development. Neither of those organisations recognise any wolfalike or wolflook breed. Even some of the wolfalike breeds that are recognised overseas such as the Tamaskan, Czechoslovakian Wolfdog and Norther Inuit do not have breed recognition in Australia.
But what if i still want my domestic wolf?
Some are continuing to develop the more restricted breeds that they imported prior to the ban. There are also a number of breeders in Australia mixing domestic breeds such as Malamute, Husky, German Shepherd, White Suisse Shepherd and Samoyed in an attempt to achieve the domestic dog wolf look. As there are no established or recognised wolfalike breeds in Australia, it can be hit and miss. Any google search for Australian wolfalikes will show dozens of different looking dogs and more critically, because they are often made up of a few breeds, the temperaments can also be very different. So if you are searching for your domestic wolf it is critical to do you research. Get to know the breeder, learn about their breeding practices (do they have an established program to ensure the pups get adequate exposure and care, watch for those that are overbreed - lots of litters means little time for training and care) , where possible visit their premises so you can see the pups in their home environment, ask questions about the breeds in the pups you are looking at (and research those breeds to see if the dogs are suitable for you), meet the dog parents where you can, chat to other puppy owners and read any contracts they give you very carefully.

Warden had two litters as part of his contribution towards the Tamaskan Dog program. While we aren't going to ever be working with Tamaskans ourselves, we were approached with the request from several breeders who were looking for a wolfalike stud dog who'd been fully health tested and had no wolf content and Warden fit the bill. Both of his litters produced puppies who all Embark tested with no detectable grey wolf content, which was part of the goal for both breeders.
Lark and Ciri are the two breeding prospect puppies from Warden's second litter. The owner of the dam, Avalon Tamaskan, kept Ciri and they co-own Lark with a great family. They are only one year old, so they have another couple of years to go before they'll finish their health testing and be seriously evaluated for breeding suitability.

Pardon my ignorance, but what are the four wolfdog breeds?
Kunming Dog (China), Sarloos Wolfdog (Netherlands), Czech Vlcak (Czech Republic), and Lupo Italino (Italy). All of these are relatively low content at this point but recognized breeds of wolfdog in various registries. Their legality status varies widely from "just a dog" to "pure wolf" depending on how restrictive the laws are in that particular area, but they are all technically low content wolfdogs. These are just a few of the various projects many governments have tried to combine wolf with GSD in order to create a working dog. Most of these projects have failed because it creates a dog that is skittish and lacks the confidence or drive to perform the work, these four are what remains of that era.
Tamaskans, Utonagans, Northern Inuit Dogs, American Native Indian Dogs, Alaskan Noble Companion Dogs, Blue Bay Shepherds, and others like them are "wolfalikes" whose breed purpose was supposedly to create a wolfy-looking dog with zero wolf in them, and all of them have lines that absolutely do come from wolfdogs whether by using one of the recognized wolfdog breeds (so they're absurdly low content) or by using actual wolves and higher content wolfdogs (so they're mostly low-to-mid content). Their creators all deny it as do a large percentage of their breed communities but genetics don't lie.
It is for this reason that I now regard EVERY supposed "looks like a wolf without any wolf!" creations with a lot of suspicion. When paper hanging and outright dishonesty is simply par for the course when it comes to these dogs, I just don't trust when someone says their dogs supposedly magically look like low or mid contents without wolf in them. And to me, that dooms a breed pretty quickly if you're being so dishonest about what's in your breeding program.
