okay actual serious ep80 thoughts now

first things first: "tHeY didn’t LeArN aNyThInG" feels like it’s really reductive. i think people came into this expecting all of their communication problems to be insta-fixed so that they can be a perfect cute little found family and that's just not how bh rolls. i do think that it was a much needed diversion from them constantly forcing themselves into third gear (along with the wok sledding, everyone forgets the wok sledding) to stop the bad guys. other people have pointed out that if not given any instructions they’ll be fine with opening up to each other and being genuine, but they froze and immediately started getting antsy the moment they were told to. i just think that’s funny.

i don’t think imogen and laudna are hypocrites. rather they’re very much stuck with their own traumas and assume that their experiences are universal. imogen thinks she was born cursed and that everything in her life has just been set up to punish her for something she inherently deserves. there’s an abusive cunt off the port bow trapped in laudna’s head that she literally had to force herself to walk away from (and make saving throws to stop) to not be forced into hoovering up that shard without her consent.

they both saw fearne shrug off dozens of times she could have died horribly or faced terrible consequences and get off scott-free and missed the forest for the trees. they want her to take power because she can actively consent to it rather than be slapped with insane power at a young age and then forced to course-correct, which probably explains why they got so angry at ashton for "tricking" her: they saw it as them taking something she could use to better herself.

and on that note, laudna telling fearne she’s glad she could make her choice didn’t feel like it was backhanded, envious, bitter, none of that. i think she genuinely does see this as fearne making a choice on her own behalf in a way that she is incapable of.

the whole kerfuffle with callowmoore didn’t make me hate the ship, but it did make me even less fond of the fans of it given the shippers who turned on ashton saying all kindsa nasty shit that got disproved in the 4sd. i’ve always preferred the idea of a slowburn with these two because ashley has said fearne is unsure of how she would handle love or a relationship herself and now taliesin has said that ashton finds themselves unlovable.

as much as i joke and bitch, i don’t think that everyone’s been "forcing the ship" so much as they’ve been assuming that the constant flirtations between the two of them will make them more comfortable with taking the shard and meeting in the middle. the two of them deciding to be friends for the moment is far superior and makes the slow burn way more likable because now it’s something on their own terms rather than them getting together because they were told to.

irregardless of it stays platonic or develops into romance "callowmoore is abusive" is a terrible take no matter if you like the ship or hate it and i hate that it got blown so far out of proportion anditmademelegithateanothershipbutlikethatsnotimportantrightnowandidontwantpeopletogetmadatmeokay.

and yet! there’s always going to be this huge discomfort of the fact that fearne was always unsure about taking it, didn’t explain why she was unsure to anybody expect for chetney (and orym should have fucking said something), and then just decided to take it just so people would stop hassling her about it. she wasn’t forced into taking it but she certainly was backed into a corner about it. she did not ever want it but she saw that it was making everyone really upset and took it because hey, might as well.

"we all might as well" is something everyone’s been saying and while everyone else has their reasons for making the best out of a terrible situation, fearne notably did not have the exact same problem that most of them shared (i have this insane power inside me threatening to blow at any given second that i just have to live with on a daily basis). she wasn’t even aware of the raw deal she had been saddled in her existence with until it was pointed out to her!

long story short the main problem it seems that bh has to get over is just assuming they know what's best for each other. it should’ve been fcg and i will die on that hill. let ashton have a robot sister.

plenty of people on this app have already explained in more detail and better articulation how ashton’s recent decisions are justified in terms of character arc and development, so i don’t feel the need to comment on that

THAT BEING SAID

talking about ashley’s HIGHLY PERSONAL situation and using it as justification for their OPINIONS about taliesin/ashton’s player/character decisions is unbelievably disgusting and vile

part of why i prefer to interact with other actual-play fandoms over the cr fandom is because of how often i see cr fans start bringing the pcs into their criticisms of the play

YOU DO NOT KNOW THEM!! no matter how deeply you read into the reactions at the table and of the characters, no matter how long you’ve been watching cr, no matter how “noble” or “compassionate” your intentions are with your commentary

YOU ARE NOT THEM!! you can have feelings and reactions and opinions about ashton’s decisions and behavior and character but pushing those into TALIESIN HIMSELF to judge his personality and comment on his relationships with his FAMILY at the table is so unreal

CAN one’s behaviors in roleplay reflect aspects of themself? absolutely! however,

the cast knows each other. they trust each other. they 100% ALREADY talked through whatever emotions and reactions they had to this session with each other. this was filmed weeks ago, they’re all STILL comfortable roleplaying and hanging out with each other, as demonstrated by recent events. the comfort and entitlement in the way some of you are speaking about taliesin and ashley right now is disgusting

be angry, sad, disappointed, shocked! disagree! agree! love ashton! hate ashton!

but keep your accusations of above-table “abuse” and “manipulation” out of it

i’ve really been enjoying seeing mixed reactions to this episode and the various in-depth breakdowns of ashton’s character and choices, and i love seeing ppl react to taliesin’s insane character loyalty

but some of you need to back off and keep taliesin and ashley’s names out of your mouths. you don’t know any more about these people’s lives, relationships, and boundaries than what they choose to share with you

in keeping with my unpopular opinions re: the attractiveness of fictional men love and light and I adore both Liam and Taliesin as performers but Liam is literally always dressed like this, and Taliesin is, I would assume on purpose, giving Evil Count Von Count while providing an object lesson in why his goth look in the 1990s was platinum rather than jet. like am I insane or is Imari's holster look hottest of the guys and it's not close

Taliesin: so, inigo was it? How did you meet our friend?

Inigo: rather unfortunately I’m afraid. I was high on skooma at the time, I saw a blinding white blur wrapped in fur tumble out of a bush in front of me. I thought it was a bear so I shot it… as it turns out that furry blur was our snow born friend. A few months went by, I had turned myself in to the authorities but nobody believed me. They said I was wasting their time but I needed to repent! I had to repent. So I paid them to keep me in that cell… then one day as I waited for death, he found me, and he remembered me very well. Apparently I was the first sentient thing he saw when he ran from his cave, and well, he wasn’t happy. *snickers* thankfully Kaidan was there to stop him from attacking me because now, we are close friends. I was alone in this world before I met him, now I have so many friends, friends I would consider… family…

Taliesin: you… have no family?…

Inigo: not anymore… my birth mother died saving me and my brother from being sacrificed. My adopted parents were killed protecting a trade caravan… and my brother… He died saving me. We were ambushed by a group of villagers who pinned a string of break ins on us… Fergus, told me to run, and I did… I miss him dearly.

Taliesin: Fergus huh?… he sounded lovely…

Inigo: he was… What of you?… any family my friend?…

Taliesin: yes I… not anymore I suppose… I… I can never go home. I deserted the thalmor, everyone thinks I died in action… If I went back, the shame I’d bring onto my family would make them wish I’d stayed dead… but gods. I miss them… I hate their views on the dominion, they saw me joining the thalmor as a great honour. I saw it as a mistake. But I miss them so much, I even miss bickering with my sisters… *stares at the fire then across the room as Henwen continues setting up to play and earn them some coin with a few songs* I wonder if they mourn for me like you do your brother… The pain it brings my heart just imagining it… I… *sighs*

Inigo: *pats his back* if they loved you, they’ll mourn. A broken heart is a heart that has loved…

Taliesin: that explains why It feels like I’m having a heart attack then h-heh *sniffles a little like he’s trying not to cry* gods I really am alone in this world huh…

Inigo: No you are not. You have us now my friend. *gestures around the room as Henwen starts to play winding up the tavern into a merry mood, a tavern full of faces that had become familiar to the high elf*

Taliesin: *looks around to see Lucien ordering them food at the bar, Kaidan sitting close to Henwen to admire him fondly, Khash and Cary both dancing with one another to the music, his friends, his found family* A motley crew of insane and lonely souls… I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. *smiles*

Soooo... Hypothetically (and I mean that) of someone had a chance to gush over your work to Matthew Mercer himself, would you be okay with it? In a "oh yeah, please do!" way or more of a "haha, sure, please don't tell me about it though" kind of way?

Okay here’s the thing I don’t KNOW how the CR team feel about fanfic beyond being super supportive of it but also probably can’t read it legally due to them owning a publishing house now, but I also know Dani does read it (I don’t know if she had to stop since becoming Lorekeeper), so like I already assume simply on the basis that LitMoR has two of the longest fics in the AO3 tag that she might be aware of them and might have mentioned them. SO LIKE… i don’t want anyone to make Matt weird about fanfic, but I also do kinda want him to know “hey this person loved Cree so much she’s written one million words about giving her a fair shake” and would never have the courage to do it myself. Or would never think to do it myself. (Seriously I’d be too busy trying to stumble through telling Taliesin my story of how I discovered him through the Evangelion commentaries and his nerdery rewired my ninth grade brain.)

So all of this is a long way of saying you can let him know someone out there loves Cree SO MUCH she’s done feats of insanity over her and gauge the temperature of the situation, but obviously don’t make him uncomfy. Also the fact that you’d talk to Matt Mercer and say stuff about ME is making me flop on the floor like WHAT. Omg.

(And yes I wanna know what he says if you do it…. Even though the idea makes me want to throw up in my mouth a little. I still want to know if it makes him happy to know he created a minor character that barely ANYONE cares about and gave her an epic story.)

CR3 EPISODE 78 SPOILERS

god. i love this fucking campaign. this one's gonna be long as shit.

despite how genuinely depressing this episode was, it also made me really giddy because i love hurt/comfort and there's no point of that if there's no hurt or angst.

im probably gonna go down the line with each member of bells hells, discussing what i can remember off the top of my head, i hope i don't forget anything in my rambles cause this was one of my FAVORITE episodes of the whole campaign and that's saying something.

i love ashton. i have loved ashton the most since the very beginning and for a lot of it i was really worried that ashton was deliberating running from opening up with bells hells while also going out of their way to have one-to-one convos with different members that were deep and insightful but never went as far as they needed to.

i am projecting a bit with analysis of ashton but taliesin does it best when rp'ing for ash and generally talking abt him in interviews. ashton reminds me of myself, which is not a compliment and is actually really terrible. ironically enough, ashton said the same thing abt fcg. i have spent a lot of time hurting myself by sabotaging the things i love, or embracing the worse parts of myself simply because it's become habit. there's always going to be a piece of you that finds the sadness, anger, guilt, emptiness, whatever -- comforting because it's all you've known.

ashton mourns a life that he never lived. i find myself mourning versions of myself that i would hate but still...yearn for them like an itch or an ache that comes from hurt. ashton wanted their family back, in whatever desperate, corrupted way he felt he should have done it, and hearing how he described feeling like he looked past the cautionary tale simply because he thought the pain they caused him should have meant something else made me think of imogen.

beautiful, sweet, powerful, dangerous, sad imogen temult. i won't comment on how everyone berated ashton because that's not really surprising nor was anything imogen said or did pertaining to ash shocking whatsoever. but... there's smth abt the destruction that ashton did to feel close to the idea of a family that doesn't really exist that just parallels so well with the fight that imogen has been undergoing since childhood. against the red storm, now against the call of ruidus, and the temptation and attachment she felt and still feels to her mother, despite everything liliana has done that jeopardizes everything imogen is fighting for.

abandoned by her mother, shunned by her own town, ignored and feared by her father.

going back to ashton again, there's smth to be said abt the guilt and shame that comes from making horrible choices that put yourself and the ppl you love in danger that forever changes the way they perceive you. I've done it. i had to fight to make things better. it can't be enough to love someone enough that would die for them, you have to fight to stay alive. if not even for yourself, for THEM.

i know it can be unhealthy to rely on others so much, but it's certainly not easy to fight for yourself when the foundation isn't there. learning how to love without throwing yourself on a blade is more important than self sufficiency. that comes afterwards.

i...don't like laudna's reliance on delilah briarwood this episode. i... there's smth very ironic about laudna being worried abt ashton's betrayal and the way he hurt her and the others with his deception and selfishness, coupled with my understanding of the absolute fucking insane, borderline stupid danger of even SPEAKING to delilah briarwood, let alone working WITH her.

i think it's hypocritical, but i don't feel any animosity towards laudna. just..sadness. delilah is a parasite. a disgusting, cruel, evil bitch who wants laudna to be... that weak little girl easily crushed under her thumb. she may preach abt laudna's latent power and potential, but laudna won't serve her purpose if she TRULY gains the strength to cast delilah aside forever. i don't think delilah was telling the truth abt their fates last episode, and that's why i so deeply want laudna to toss aside that defeatist mindset that has only gotten worse since episode one. maybe im wrong, maybe delilah was actually being genuine.

i kept watching imogens/laura's face during laudna's moments speaking with delilah alone, and it just made me sad because she didn't need to be alone. she had imogen, but she still felt the need to run and hide away. god i just want her to be happy.

i really liked the doll she made for ashton, even though delilah made it really creepy for no reason, the dramatic cunt she is. her assessment of ashton as being a child may seem rude or even a projection but to me it's the truth. ashton has not grown past his childhood. past abandonment and pain and mistrust and love that never lasts and always hurts. that shit followed them to adulthood and anyone who has any number of mental illnesses and childhood trauma will tell you that it's so easy to feel yourself stuck as a reactive, stubborn, bitter little kid trapped in a shitty cycle of pain. both ashton and laudna this episode felt like they were both broken, sad children interacting. laudna clinging to comfort from delilah, hiding away, mentally reverting to the person she was the last time she was in whitestone. ashton, clinging to his lost childhood and the acceptance of laudna's doll, the admittance that they'd never had a doll before. god... they're so sad, im gonna scream.

fcg apologizing for forcing faith down ashtons throat was sweet and so was ashton apologizing for being so bitter abt fcg's faith. now i just need fcg to apologize for the multiple instances where he put laudna in danger by casting turn undead with no acknowledgement of laudna afterwards.

fcg saying that ashton didn't love anyone or care about anyone hurt me a bit, because while i understood why they were saying those things, it was so... obviously untrue. before all of this, ashton has shown again and again and again how much he loves bells hells, and especially fcg. i know that ashton almost dying over smth so arrogant, desperate and foolish would make anyone question what someone's idea of "love" is, but still. it stung. maybe because i have been there. i know what it's like to be doubted and mistrusted because you ruined smth good callously and carelessly.

chetney... chetney really loves fearne. i don't care if y'all don't get it or if y'all still think chet is some joke character with no substance, I never understood that shit and i simply never will. chet and fearne probably have the best relationship in all of bells' hells -- and yes, that includes imogen and laudna because god knows those two have shit brewing under the surface that needs to be HANDLED, i.e: laudna being defeatist abt their relationship even tho it's barely begun.

chetney's a good man. him going after fearne was the best choice and im glad he gave her a couple laughs before she went off to wander. he cares about her so much, and he BELIEVES in her so much, and i love them. i LOVED the way he went in on ashton. hurting fearne by making a shitty decision and letting her bear the burden of watching ashton die right in front of her was... bad. it is very complicated but, that's pretty cut and dry.

i like him testing ashton again and again. telling him to leave but also being glad they chose to be brave and stay, and face the consequences of their actions. attacking ashton to see what all of any of that shit was even for. (im a little bummed that the shard didn't fully wake up yet but...i love the suspense im just impatient).

FEARNE. CALLOWAY. i love fearne, and i love the breakdown during the first part of the episode. it was such a raw moment and it established the tone of the episode so quickly. im glad that fearne knows that while ashton fucked up royally, her rejecting of the shard and complacence in ashton's plans was also royally stupid. i don't think her being terrified of taking the shard is bad or stupid, it's actually one of my favorite fearne character choices. no one ever actually asked her WHY she didn't want it, and when she said she didn't want it, it was still decided by the hells that the shard would go to fearne. (they're very shit at communication, poor babies). im happy that she specifically clarified that ashton did not threaten or manipulate her (plus he gave her many opportunities to not be involved with his bullshit if it made her uncomfy so im hoping the insane critters who keep treating ashton like some evil, predatory person finally stfu).

fearne being so scared of a version of herself that was sad, lonely, and "evil" to the point that she chose to believe that it was ashton's destiny to take in both shards is so... so rich. i hope she talks about that more in the next episode because i don't think she's EVER brought it up since exu. i don't think the shard would change fearne's personality but god the fact that SHE is so afraid of herself and what she's capable of.... AHHHH. love this damn party.

i hope liam knows that expect really painful roleplaying from him when he comes back cause i really do need ashton and orym interactions like i need air.

the choice to go to the fey realm was brilliant and i missed nana morri so it's a win for me. bells hells COULD have done what they've been doing for a while now, which is ignoring the pain they're all feeling and pushing forward, but ashton doing what they did was the straw that broke the camel's back and im GLAD because i have been begging them all to have real conversations with each other that don't get cut short prematurely for whatever reason.

i do hope that they do really lean into the self care aspect involving therapy and talking through their issues with ALL of the members present or even in groups, and it isn't just fun and games. they're prone to distraction. i love my little guys.
