Macaque trials offer hope in pneumonia vaccine development

Science News from research organizations Development of a novel pneumococcal vaccine with confirmed efficacy in macaque monkeys Date: November 28, 2023 Source: Osaka Metropolitan University Summary: A research team has successfully developed a novel pneumococcal vaccine by combining the team’s proprietary mucosal vaccine technology with pneumococcal surface proteins that can cover a wide range of serotypes. Experiments were conducted using mice and macaques and it was confirmed that pneumonia caused by pneumococcal infection was clearly suppressed in the target groups of animals inoculated with the vaccine. Researchers at Osaka Metropolitan University are making great strides in combating pneumococcal pneumonia, one of the leading causes of respiratory deaths worldwide. Despite the existence of vaccines against pneumococcal infections such as otitis media, sinusitis, and meningitis, the prevalence of pneumococcal pneumonia remains high. Currently, around 100 new serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae have been identified, and the increase in pneumococcal infections caused by serotypes not covered by the vaccine has become a concern. This situation underscores the need for a more versatile vaccine. Building on their previous success in mucosal responses in 2019, in which they developed a mucosal vaccine that caninduce antigen-specific mucosal immune responses, mainly immunoglobulin A (IgA), on the target mucosal surface, a research team led by Professor Satoshi Uematsu and Associate Professor Kosuke Fujimoto from the Department of Immunology and Genomics at the Graduate School of Medicine, Osaka Metropolitan University, has this time set out to bridge the gap in pneumococcal pneumonia vaccination efficacy. To successfully develop a novel pneumococcal vaccine, the research team combined its proprietary mucosal vaccine technology with pneumococcal surface proteins that can cover a wide range of serotypes. Casting Jerry Jewell as Principal Nezu was one of the smartest casting moves Funimation made in fucking years (just under casting Ian Sinclair as Reo in Sarazanmai). I just now realized Nezu's seiyuu (Yasuhiro Takato) had also played Russia in APH, just like Jewell in the english dub.

Principal Nedzu is conditioning heroes to violence. It'll only take a little push from there to actual killing, which will eventually be justified. Nedzu is preparing for WAR. And it doesn't matter which side wins; humans will annihilate each other, and a new dominant species will arise!

Nedzu is the only example of an animal with a quirk which is one of those stick-out-like-a-sore-thumb things that you simply accept because it was shown early on in the series when your disbelief is initially suspended, which is later revisited and Cerebus Retconned into something far more serious and in retrospect should have been suspicious all along. You know, like Kakashi's chronic lateness, or Lord Hater looking like a skeleton, or literally everything in Adventure Time.

Nedzu’s origin is that he was experimented on by humans after being discovered, which gave him a deep-seated grudge against humanity and a sadistic streak...which is the exact sort of thing you’d expect from a villain’s backstory. Was he ever a hero? How did he become involved in the pipeline that churns out heroes? In what way is he qualified to be in his position? The timeline is literally

The only other time we’ve seen inhuman creatures with quirks is the Nomu, reanimated corpses that have been mutated beyond all recognition by Dr. Garaki and AFO. Who’s to say they didn’t start these experiments with a lab rat? Who’s to say Nedzu isn’t a prototype Nomu?

I think that if Nedzu isn’t working for AFO, he’s on his own side pitting humanity against itself, like you said. Playing both sides like a fiddle. Collecting the best and brightest children with ‘useful’ quirks and grooming them like livestock.

Yasuhiro Takato uses the same voice for him as Russia from Hetalia.
