So I’ve been thinking about some of the different adaptations of Dororo, and while if you scroll through my posts I definitely have some obvious favorites, I also think that if you told me I had to pick one and only one for the rest of my life, I’d pick the stage play, and then promptly get in trouble when my fanfics made it clear I was still looking at other versions too. None of the ones I’ve finished so far have necessarily felt incomplete to me, but there’s stuff in each that is focused on in a particular way which I am not entirely willing to give up.
The 2019 anime has the expansion of Mio’s character, depiction of Hyakkimaru’s soul sight, and the introduction of Kaname, while the stage play has this amazing use of suggestion (such as how the monsters are often represented by people in black with ribbons or cloth) and nonverbal cues, as well as pulling off some impressive emotional gut-punches with its characters, while the movie has Dororo’s character arc and excellent use of queer themes while also pulling off several emotional gut-punches, the game has Tahomaru’s arc and uses a scrapped idea from the manga in a cool way (and also emotional gut punches in a different way than the above versions), the manga has this great juxtaposition of comedy and horror, 1969 has Nota (and yes there are other things too, but dudes, Nota), and while I’m admittedly not far enough in Den to say for sure, it seems to be doing a lot of interesting things with character interactions in a way that hasn’t really showed up in previous versions.
I don’t necessarily think you could put all of them together without it turning into an overcrowded clusterf*ck at some point, similar to how you can ruin a good hot cocoa by adding too many flavors at once (at the very least, I don’t think you could do Tahomaru’s arc in the game at the same time as his arc from Den, though you could probably combine his game arc with his 2019/stage arc, and there are certain events in Jukai’s arc which would make it difficult to combine his and Hyakkimaru’s arcs in relation to each other between the movie and the anime/play without shifting some events around, but theoretically I suppose you could do it if you really wanted to). But even if you could seamlessly put them all together with minimal sacrifices, the greedy part of me would still prefer to have more stories of varying sizes rather than one big “superstory,” if you will.

some loose thoughts about the latest, 12th, episode of Dororo:
Hyakkimaru uses “ore” for himself. I wonder where he get it from, since Dororo uses “oira”. I know that it’s the same as in 1969 anime, but there he had telepathy.
He uses childish “oka-chan” (”mama”) just like Dororo. And he also understands what the word mama means, and given that they didn’t met any plot relevant mother, he learnt it from listening to others (mostly Dororo). He might have known what a mother is before, but he would only know the written word, not how it is pronounced. Also he smiled, which means not only he understands the word but it has personal significance to him.
He can communicate enough to give Dororo an idea what happened when they were separated.
He can say simple sentences now, though he doesn’t speak very fluently, pausing after each world. But the important thing is he gets the grammar (at I hope so given that I don’t know Japanese nearly well enough).
It seems that Dororo still helps him understanding the nuances of the language/helps him made sense what he heard.
When Dororo found Hyakki he was sitting by a fire which produced reddish smoke. I’m kinda intrigued by that. First of how and when Mr Wooden Hands learnt to make a fire? Second why the color?
I wonder if Tahomaru going to the Hall of Hell affected him badly, you know with that demonic wind blowing and all?

Let's hear it. Harvest, fog, spice, cinnamon 🍁
Evening! Let’s do this!
harvest - what fictional character do you most identify with? Why? In general, I usually relate to the kind of characters everyone hates and thinks is the worst. The jealous, envious, angry, bitter, petty, and not good at letting the past go. The kind that let resentment fester inside until it becomes their one and only lifeforce. Currently, I relate to She Li (19 Days) and Oikawa Tooru (Haikyuu) the most. Then perhaps Tahomaru (Dororo) and Severus Snape (Harry Potter). None of those characters are identical to each other, but I feel every one of their pain deep in my core and relate to it in one way or another.
fog - how well do you think you’d do in a zombie apocalypse scenario? Extremely poorly.
spice - have you ever encountered a house that you believed to be haunted? Yes. Near to where my childhood best friend lived there was an old abandoned house that belonged to the local museum. A piece of the little town’s history. It also happened to be officially haunted which meant it was listed in some book that had mapped all the haunted places in Finland. I never went closer to it than walked past it. I actually wrote a short original work based on the house.
cinnamon - if you had to live in a time period different than the present, which would you choose and where? The period I would die to experience in history is August 15–18, 1969 in Bethel, New York. An Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music aka the Bethel Rock Festival aka Woodstock. Love, peace, music, and a shit ton of edibles. Other than that, the 1960s in the US in general.

Dororo
Look ma, no hands!
