The Tumblr app hasn't let me create a new post in the last two days so now I'm going old school and posting via website - let's see if it works 😊.
Yesterday was an unexpectedly relaxing day. I accidentally woke up just in time to catch a gorgeous sunrise which kicked the day off nicely, and a few hours later we slowly packed up our things and made our way to Sedgefield for a beach / water / lagoon view and for the best (literally) fish and chips. We then drove to Oudtshoorn, heading back west towards Cape Town. The reason the day unexpectedly became relaxing is because we had planned to drive Swartberg Pass...but a trailer filled with 24 tons of oranges had flipped over 4-5 days ago and rescue workers were still manually moving boxes of oranges and the path was closed. So instead we hung out by the pool and Rob and I went to a local, VERY old school gym. I was a bit lost at first because the equipment looked strangely unfamiliar and there were a lot of wobbly parts and squeaking 😅. It was still super nice to get some activity in though.
Fortunately the pass was open today so we took a slight detour to drive it - super beautiful views and the road actually wasn't as scary or narrow as comments online suggest. I particularly liked seeing these mini palm tree-aloe-flower-plant things everywhere (last picture) - they look so funny 🤩. From there it was all driving (about 6ish hours total today) to get back to Cape Town. The scenery was so different inland vs by the coast. Much hotter and very dry, with rolling hills. There were many patches of bright orange and purple flowers everywhere though, dotting the hills and lining the side of the highway. All in all, a nice day, albeit I didn't feel so great by early afternoon - it was our first day taking anti-malaria pills and I think I had some small side effects like stomach pain, chills, achy joints, etc. Nothing an Advil couldn't cure 😊 but hopefully this was just a one time thing!

Bijlia dilatata
Bijlia is a small genus in the Aizoaceae, or Ice Plant Family. This one is Bijlia dilatata, from near Prince Albert, South Africa, at the foot of the Swartberg mountain range. It is notable for its pale green lumpy leaves, with the flowers coming out a little before the winter solstice.

The second part of our trip has come to an end after a 5 day road trip on the Garden Route. This route took us through rolling hills with vineyards and white sandy beaches along the southcoast and back over the steep mountainous Swartberg Pass and endless desert driving more inland. Total distance was roughly 1700 km.
On the first day, we set off early to see the marching ducks at a vineyard where they use them as a natural pesticide. My hope was high, and expectation set to see a Donald Duck like fanfare marching from the pond into the lush vineyard. Unfortunately, the info provided online was incorrect, and Donald and his troopers had already had their breakfast. Nevertheless, we got a private tour of the estate, which was still very informative and interesting, even for people like us who only use wine for goulash. Next, we stopped by Laura's friend, where we had milktart and tea, in a gated community that did not exist on Google maps. This was a completely different side to living in SA to the townships we had just passed to get there. We continued our journey on to Hermanus, where we did a coastal walk and spent the afternoon watching the abundant amount of whales play and eat in the bay.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The days after, we spent a long time driving with a few highlights. Laura and I went bungeejumping from the 3rd highest bungee in the world at the Bloukrans bridge. This bridge allows for a freefall of roughly 170 meters. I can't deny my knees were weak, arms were heavy, nearly some vomit on my sweater already when seeing Laura and the other "contestant" being strapped up to jump off the bridge, but once it was my turn felt surprisingly calm. I knew I could not withdraw and live with the knowledge that my sister had more courage (or stupidity, depending on who you ask) than me. If you wonder what it feels like, it's exactly what you imagine. Air moving very fast past you, a gentle deceleration, and then a good 2 minutes of blood rushing to your head while you ungraciously hang upside down to be rescued. They must have a laugh up there wondering why stupid tourists pay for such a thing.
Tumblr media
Another highlight was buying my souvenir for this trip, which is an Orlando Pirates football jersey. After watching the film Captain Phillips, I got my inspiration on how to name my Fifa and FPL teams. Can't post the name here, or I'll get demonitized, but the true managers out there know what I'm talking about. Besided that, the shirt looks cool, and I am looking forward to wearing it on the pitch!
The last 2 highlights were the Robberg hiking trail on a beautiful sunny day, with a wee detour to the island. And of course, todays 7 hour drive over the Swartberg pass and over the N1 through a desert. For more interesting facts and details, you can read Naomi's blog (nfornaomi).

How's this for a mountain pass. Heaven on a motorcycle. I looked forward for this ride for years and years. The stunning Swartberg Pass in sunny South Africa. If God rides a motorcycle, his holiday home is sure to be close by. Now I've done the pass many times. Best of all, my new favourite is the mighty Ouberg Pass, about 300 km away. The ride to Ouberg is so Lekker (cool) and the technical aspects make one respectful of the pass. The views are spectacular

The State History Cango Caves Travel Guide for Everyone on a Budget
Tumblr media
Cango Caves are a series of caves located in the Swartberg Mountains in the Western Cape province of South Africa. The caves are one of the country's major tourist attractions, with over half a million visitors each year. The Cango Caves were first discovered in the early 18th century by a local farmer, but it was not until the early 19th century that they were explored in any detail. The first scientific exploration of the caves was conducted in 1857 by a team from the Cape Colony's Department of Public Works. The Cango Caves are formed of limestone that was deposited in the sea some 250 million years ago. The caves are the product of millions of years of erosion by water seeping through the limestone. The caves are home to a variety of stalactites and stalagmites, as well as other rock formations. The caves are also home to a colony of bats. The Cango Caves are open to the public for tours. Tours of the caves take place daily and last for about an hour. The caves are also a popular destination for spelunkers (cavers). Read the full article

My mate Tim and I found this amazing campsite behind the Swartberge mountains in the Klein Karoo near Rouxpos. Hospitality of the owners was excellent, everything neat and tidy. Tim had bike issues after a low speed fall so we were kaput after a long very hot day in the Africa as he nursed his pony to the campsite. That evening we made the breweries very happy. Those frosted ales were like sensational, so we elected to sleep in the dormotatry just too exhausted to pitch our tents. With his equipped workshop the owner assisted us to make a temporary repair to last the rest of our 4 days in the Karoo. Man I love the karoo and it's people.

Sometimes you need to soar like an eagle in order to get a bird's eye view of the expansive natural grandeur of an event like @ecobound_adventures' #tohellandback #mtb Challenge. The gruelling route passes through ever- changing ecosystems, from thorny savanna and arid #Karoo scrubland plains, to stands of mountain fynbos 🌿🍃🌸 Along the way, the huge field of riders had to cope with approximately 30 Degrees of temperature variation as they cranked SA's longest gravel pass into #DieHel (and back again). Day 1 peaked in the mid-thirties, while the return ride ascended into 5 Degrees Celsius at Die Top, the zenith of this 2-day, 2-way #mountainbike Stage Race. The predicted massive downpour for the #swartberg mountains never materialized, but I was pleased to have the @isuzusa #isuzuMUX to take on those roads! 👌💪👍 As always, it proved to be an amazing mountain mission with #ECOBOUND & the kickass #Media Crew, including @zaneschmahl, @andrehugomedia, @tonycookadventures, @tribaltourist and a whole load of amazing MTB peeps. All images were captured on the kickass little @dji_za #djispark - it punches way, WAY above expectation, @chantzg1!!
