I bought a tiny @djisouthafrica #djimini early in 2020. Around the size of a fattish Cape sparrow, this is about as backpackable and non-invasive as a drone can get. The images below are the last visual harvest from this tiny little fly-machine with makulu-skop, after a raptor at #CedarFalls decided it resembled a rather stupid bird. Said falcon made short shrift of the drone as it hovered in the airspace above one of the rugged #baviaanskloof gorges, striking it disdainfully and shattering it in a dozen pieces. RIP, my magical aerial friend :-( Moving on. The photos recovered from the drone's SD Card do one thing: they capture a gargantuan vastidiousness (yes, I know this is not a word) within this World Heritage Site wilderness space. The #trailrunners participating in last weekend's @leopardtrailrun literally become a real-time #WheresWally puzzle as they recede to miniscule specks within the unrelenting natural grandeur. Serrated peaks, convoluted gorges, mountain meadows, shimmering rooigras ridgelines, shard-shattered scree slopes, kloofs awash with restios sedges ... there's so much more to this space than just the 3-day stage run. Utter nature immersion awaits in a hideaway world where visitors will discover Shamanic San rock art; a meandering #mtb trail and flow-track; wild horses roaming upon grassland plains and mind-expanding breathing space ... Sometimes you need to soar like an eagle in order to get a bird's eye view of the expansive natural grandeur of an event like @ecobound_adventures' #tohellandback #mtb Challenge. The gruelling route passes through ever- changing ecosystems, from thorny savanna and arid #Karoo scrubland plains, to stands of mountain fynbos 🌿🍃🌸 Along the way, the huge field of riders had to cope with approximately 30 Degrees of temperature variation as they cranked SA's longest gravel pass into #DieHel (and back again). Day 1 peaked in the mid-thirties, while the return ride ascended into 5 Degrees Celsius at Die Top, the zenith of this 2-day, 2-way #mountainbike Stage Race. The predicted massive downpour for the #swartberg mountains never materialized, but I was pleased to have the @isuzusa #isuzuMUX to take on those roads! 👌💪👍 As always, it proved to be an amazing mountain mission with #ECOBOUND & the kickass #Media Crew, including @zaneschmahl, @andrehugomedia, @tonycookadventures, @tribaltourist and a whole load of amazing MTB peeps. He's no longer a boy, I'm afraid ... Robster has over the past few years grown into a young man that marches to the beat of his own drum, and I've realised this past weekend at @leopardtrailrun that it is but a matter of time before he kicks my butt on the trails 😏😬 After some solid surf sessions in #Jbay, he joined on @theleopardtrail to help shoot the #leopardrun stage #trailrun. Over the next couple of days, he kloofed and ran around 30kays in these rugged #baviaanskloof ranges, negotiating everything from canyons, waterfall swims and sandy riverbeds, to scree-slope ascents in temps touching on 40 Degrees ☀ 🔥 He really wanted one of the @sealandgear race backpacks, so @maraiskaryn 'donated' hers to him when we got home. Half an hour later he brought it back and said he would rather earn it by running the full race next year. We're about to go into training mode, @zaneschmahl - seems #DieOom will be drinking @darlingbrew while @robert.marais captures the action 📸! A few monochrome moments capturing the wild and rugged heart of the remote #baviaanskloof this past weekend. The inaugural @leopardtrailrun - presented by @ecobound_adventures along the craggy and shale-shocked @theleopardtrail hiking route - absolutely rocked (geographically and figuratively). A top-class crew, together with @zaneschmahl and family, blew us away with incredible hospitality, some of the best food (thanks @carmenschmahl!) I've ever experienced at a #trailrun, and a route equal parts cool- and cruel running 👏👏👏 One could hardly imagine a more breathtaking natural setting than the shale-shocked ranges enveloping #cedarfalls base camp, the starting point for this 3-day #trail fest. Indigenous thorn veldt, star-studded skies, farm dam swims, silent nights ... the vibe was full-on family with just enough adventure on the side. Big up to @tayelor101 & #TrailBallie @noelernstzen who stormed to victory. About to immerse ourselves into the #moerandgone headspace of the vast #baviaanskloof mega-reserve. This remote and rugged wilderness rates as one of my favourite #easterncape destinations. Most people do not stray off the main gravel strip, though, and as a result they often miss out on some of this #worldheritagesite's hidden secrets ... One of my #outdoor discoveries is the amazing #cedarfalls along the @theleopardtrail. Hidden within a craggy kloof - brimming with ancient cedars and tumbling waterfalls - this is also the base for this weekend's @leopardtrailrun, presented by @ecobound_adventures. Best of all is that I get to spend a few days off the grid with @maraiskaryn, Grace and @robert.marais, far away from the madding crowd. Today's 2019 #Transbaviaans Repeat was supposed to be an (ever so slightly) more relaxed version of the 'world's toughest single-stage #mtb race' . It seems, however, that the @ecobound_adventures crew forgot to share this info with the riders cracking the whip along the rugged 230km via #baviaanskloof ... Merciless headwinds resulted in some jockeying for position on a grey and overcast day, with rain & single-figure temperature atop #Bergplaas, but by midday conditions began to clear a bit. #DieOom decided to go play in the primeval #Poortjie Forests, and what a blast it was 🙌🏻😊👌 The leading bunch cranked through #Langwater at pace, and banged via the midway CP just on 3pm. This set them up for a 9h25min finish at #FountainsMall in #jeffreysbay, with Team #UncleFish taking the honours in 9h25min. Mixed Category went to Team #CycloPro, with a surging ride by @traceyannecampbell, @brucecampbell87 and Jay Carneiro. Top position in the women's field went to Team #Sumeil.
