Roman Rock Lighthouse is an iconic #falsebay beacon for regular paddlers on this breathtaking stretch of ocean. It is also the only lighthouse in SA built on a single rock, where a wild surge runs amok along this deep ocean reef. The powerful light has been guiding ships to #simonstown harbour since 1861 ⚓ 🚢 . . Third day in a row exploring the incredible trails of #RodriguesIsland, courtesy of @ile_rodrigues_tourisme. During @expafrica, I had to rush at speed along the trail from the village of #StFrancoise, but today made for a more leisurely exploration. This may not make sense if you're in the company of two world-class #trailrun legends like @landiegreyling and @christiaangrey, so let me explain... We had their 13-month old Baby Christopher with us. And he was fast asleep, in a @thule pram. With a base filled with beer, provisions, #snorkel kit, and a few kitchen sinks. The trail very quickly morphed into a series of cliff scrambles and boulder-hopping descents, so in the end Christiaan and I carried the young Royal in his lofty carriage in the worthy new #ar discipline of #HikeAPerambulator ... something to consider for your next event, @heidikinetic 🤔😅🙄 The cold @phoenixbeermru at the amazing #ansebouteille - together with unmatched natural grandeur and superb snorkelling - is what makes @rodriguesisland such a truly unique destination. On Sunday, 1400x trail runners will tackle the extreme #trailrodrigues to pass along this spectacular coastline ... He's no longer a boy, I'm afraid ... Robster has over the past few years grown into a young man that marches to the beat of his own drum, and I've realised this past weekend at @leopardtrailrun that it is but a matter of time before he kicks my butt on the trails 😏😬 After some solid surf sessions in #Jbay, he joined on @theleopardtrail to help shoot the #leopardrun stage #trailrun. Over the next couple of days, he kloofed and ran around 30kays in these rugged #baviaanskloof ranges, negotiating everything from canyons, waterfall swims and sandy riverbeds, to scree-slope ascents in temps touching on 40 Degrees ☀ 🔥 He really wanted one of the @sealandgear race backpacks, so @maraiskaryn 'donated' hers to him when we got home. Half an hour later he brought it back and said he would rather earn it by running the full race next year. We're about to go into training mode, @zaneschmahl - seems #DieOom will be drinking @darlingbrew while @robert.marais captures the action 📸! A few monochrome moments capturing the wild and rugged heart of the remote #baviaanskloof this past weekend. The inaugural @leopardtrailrun - presented by @ecobound_adventures along the craggy and shale-shocked @theleopardtrail hiking route - absolutely rocked (geographically and figuratively). A top-class crew, together with @zaneschmahl and family, blew us away with incredible hospitality, some of the best food (thanks @carmenschmahl!) I've ever experienced at a #trailrun, and a route equal parts cool- and cruel running 👏👏👏 One could hardly imagine a more breathtaking natural setting than the shale-shocked ranges enveloping #cedarfalls base camp, the starting point for this 3-day #trail fest. Indigenous thorn veldt, star-studded skies, farm dam swims, silent nights ... the vibe was full-on family with just enough adventure on the side. Big up to @tayelor101 & #TrailBallie @noelernstzen who stormed to victory. I'm an #OosKaap boytjie, so the odds were always high I'd enjoy #Trek2Teebus and the #steynsburg region as a whole. I never realized how much, though ... In a way, it was like coming home, I suppose. The Baviaans River Conservancy where I grew up is but a couple of hours away, and I felt like a 56yr old kid let loose within a familiar outdoor playground. Rooigras seeds in your socks, the Lego jumble of ysterklip koppies, the whistle of wild rheebuck on windswept ridge lines, the smell of the fertile red soil ... it all felt comfortably familiar. Although our focus was on the 2nd edition of the @trek2teebus #Karoo #MTB Adventure, the @ozone.africa crew did duck into the mountains a few times. Our first adventure was a lightning fast ascent of the iconic #Teebus copy, followed a couple of days later by a ridgeline #trailrun recce for a potential #Trail2Teebus Stage Run. Keep your ears open for further announcements 😏 It was as always great to have my #oZone tjaaina @zaneschmahl as wingman, and with key adventure brands @isuzusa, @FrontRunnerZA, @spotafrica and @sealandgear on board. It's all about #trust. Loved spending time with @rohangermishuys, @fleurvaneeden, @rudiboth and their superb team. Back state-side after a magical family road trip in the @isuzusa #Dmax Double-Cab exploring a small corner of southern #mozambique. So much to do and see here along the Calypso Coast, and what a privilege to be able to spend it with the Waterston Clan 🙏😊 Kev showed me a few of the #surf spots, including the legendary 'local' point break, and one day I hope to up my skills level to properly master these insane barrels. Steep learning curve on a way shorter board, but some seriously wicked waves nonetheless 🌊 Add languid locals, great seafood, a few beach runs with @maraiskaryn, happy free-range kids, warm water and spicy Portuguese peri-peri to the mix, and you've pretty much ticked all the boxes.
