Author Self-Interview
tagged by @delirious-comfort
Name: Dianne full penname ShadowDianne or ShadowSelene, gods know I bothered quite a lot of people with the double pennaming back at A03. Some others use Dia. I will basically answer to any variation of the penname.
Fandoms: Could be a smartass and say all the fandoms I've written for but let's be honest; It was SwanQueen, Princess Rover and I guess some SuperCorp/SuperCat
Where do you post: AO3 and FFN but I’ve stopped posting on FFN now.
Most Popular Multi-Chapter: [Oh boy, let's do this. I'm just gonna remind y'all that I basically never wrote multichaptered -well, few exceptions- and that numbers never worked for me xD Let's do this... AJ here was very thorough and did ffnet as well but since I erased like 70% of the fics I had back at ffnet a few months ago I will simply go to A03 for simplicity's sake]
Oh! I'm doing it by Kudos
Annnd, that would be “I'm not afraid of the dark” Princess Rover-Shannara Chronicles with 237 Kudos. It's a wip so, heh xD
Most Popular One-Shot: That one would be “Cracked it” SuperCorp -I think??- Supergirl with 667 Kudos.
Favorite Story You’ve Written So Far: I always say the same one but that's because I basically went to my sandbox and said yeeet. I would write it differently now -I basically edited out a bunch of things I wanted to write because if it would have been up to me the romance would have been less upfront but since it was a SuperNova I guess I went the route of “giving focus to the ship rather than the worldbuilding which I what I love -lol-. Either way that would be Metallic Ink. Yet, to make it a bit more convoluted because y'all know how much I love writing long-winded answers my favorite piece was anything and everything I wrote that involved Steampunk -and I have a bunch!- or fae-related writing because that's what I like the most.
Fic you’re nervous to post: Quoting AJ: All of them. The fear of posting never left no matter the amount of times I did it. We all are nervous from a performance point of view.
How do you choose your titles: I curse a lot xD Not in the titles per se but while trying to find something to write there. I usually go with one word titles for one shots and, somtimes, short sentences. Sometimes they are taken from lyrics -either translated or not- that I think aids with the aesthetic I'm trying to go for or, other times, most of the times really- they are a rewritten version of a sentence written within the text. I'm horrible at it.
Do you outline: I did, sometimes, for specific things. I think I've written about this at some point prior to this tag but, and considering the biggest amount of my work is comprised of one shots and prompts at that, there were certain themes I had written enough times to know already what sort of tropes or themes I wanted to go with so those very rarely needed an outline. I wrote several versions of them, though. Sometimes because plot bunnies, some other times because I wrote in batches so if I realized there was something that was being repeated across several prompts/stories I could lean into something different in order to not be overly repetetive. If I was going for multichaptered or worldbuilding I did an outline. Some stories that required particular details -words of desire, hundred steps, words in the cloud...- also used outlines so I could keep everything in order before writing them and I knew what topics I had already written and which ones I hadn't yet.
Complete Fics:  Hah. As always the exact number is something we will never know xD I've erased a bunch so the number is already not the correct one and I'm not even considering tumblr- Now that I think of it I didn't write down tumblr as a site in where I post things... telling. Anyway, according to a03 I have 535 works. Jump that a couple 100s and that will probably be a more accurate number. From those... 513 apparently. It's probably less. Let's be honest xD
Do you accept prompts: *laughs in tired* I did, I do... I guess I still do because what I've last posted were prompts but I consider myself out of most of the whole prompt writing business if it is not for a very particular list of people. If you give me ideas I may implement them but since I don't feel strong enough for any couple atm and the burn out I ended up having is something that still lingers... let's say I'm more the shadow rather than the dianne portion of my penname these days.
Upcoming Story You’re Excited to Write: Fic wise... I guess nothing? I'm not writing fics atm, I may at some point but I'm currently still trying to unlearn a bunch of things and trying to find something I can give back in the form of a transformative work.
Stories You’re Excited to Read: Back to quoting AJ: Give me angst. And fantasy. And hurt comfort with a heavy dose of the first and very little of the second. Pretty please.
Tagging: @waknatious, @stregaomega I'm not remembering if AJ tagged you @naralanis but considered yourself tagged on my end :P

Author Post — KizuRai
We sat down with @kizurai to talk about Rain World, their process, and their Supernova adventure!
What inspired your story?
Listen. I was stuck in traffic on my way home from work one day, and it was pouring rain – as it does in Seattle, or anywhere near the northwest – and I thought to myself, “What if- but rain?”
No, but seriously though, I really was stuck in traffic and I wondered what would happen if rain could eat through materials. I would’ve been just stuck there, with nowhere to go and just melted there. Which is, okay, it’s morbid but I mean I wrote a post-apoc, what did you expect?
That and also I took inspiration from this indie game called <i>Rain World</i> (where I got the title if you couldn’t tell) and it… honestly there’s almost zero resemblance but I loved the concept of lizard monsters and the pressure of the rain killing you and having to run shelter to shelter. Like I said, kinda resembles my fic but not really?
Anyway, my fic is not frightening I swear!
How do you form your stories? Do you outline beforehand or write by the seat of your pants? Do you write linearly or out of order?
Outline? hAHA I tried, I honestly did try considering that was one of the requirements for the first draft: to at least have an outline written out (although it's a little more than that, be sure to read the rules lol). So I did write one, but then I threw that right out the window when I started writing because these ridiculous characters just don’t like to stick to script.
What I did do was write a bunch of random blurbs and facts about the world (which I never ended up using) and drew out some concept art and some floor plans, because I'm nothing if not a thorough game developer LOL
I also cannot for the life of me write out of order. If I do I just end up throwing it out even though I like it; I end up not being able to fit it anywhere.
So yes, I write linearly (not by choice) and write at the seat of my non-pants (because I hate wearing pants) and I just sit there, staring at a blank google doc until inspiration hits, or lightning strikes, whichever one comes first, and I just write and force myself to write and I keep writing until the stupid thing is done.
What in your fic are you most proud of?
Um, that it’s done? I’m still surprised I completed something, surprised I even managed 74k of words, like was I possessed?
Serious answer though, I wrote like up to chapter 9 and realized I didn’t add in any relationship stuff and Emma and Regina’s relationship went from 0 to 100 in a chapter. So I had to go back and sprinkle their relationship here and there. I guess that’s probably what I am most proud of, lmao, that I managed to make swanqueen for a swanqueen fic lol
Oh, and also making everyone hate me because of my fic. That is a joy.
Is there anything you'd change now?
Serious talk, which means this part is uninteresting but:
The thing is, we’re always changing, we’re always moving forward in one way or another, our minds are in constant movement. Therefore, whenever I look back on my old stuff I always get caught up in “god, that’s awful, why did I write that?” or “maybe I could’ve done better” and I’m sure I could if I spend the time to do so but why?
It’s done, if I’m really upset about something I should change then I’ll write a new story and do better because we grow with experience and each story writers churn out is like gaining experience points, eventually we’ll level up and maybe gain an extra skill.
The point I’m trying to get at is that, sure, there are plenty things I would love to change – burn the whole thing in a fire if I could (believe me I wanted to a couple of times) – but instead of looking back I’m going to look forward and make something better than the last.
How do you deal with writers' block?
So I follow Emily Andras on twitter and she mentioned something that I took to heart; she said something along the lines of ”writer's block is for amateurs” and I got confused and a little angry at first but let me say, I think I get it. Even though I do get writers block and I’m screaming at my screen hoping for something to happen, I wonder what professional writers do when they’re on a deadline?
I think they power through.
And even if you think what you’re writing is terrible and it might never make it into the final copy, it’s still something, it’s still words on a page and sometimes just writing something might spark something. That’s basically what I did, I kept powering through even though I hated every second of it, but I managed to get it done on time (early actually because I remembered the deadline day wrong, but let’s not talk about that) and it’s done. Period.
Also, deadlines. Those help a lot.
Was this Supernova experience different than your typical writing experience?
As mentioned above I really think the deadlines helped me. I’ve always been kinda the ‘goal-orientated but lazy otherwise’ type so on my own I’m pretty much whatever and I have a billion WIPs but forcing myself to write and do daily sprints really helped. There’s also a bunch of other writers facing the same thing as me so we can all suffer together.
Any advice to other writers who might want to write a longfic, or participate in Supernova next year?
You know what, don’t listen to all the other authors telling you outlines are the key LOL sure, go ahead and write one if that helps you, but really you gotta find the process that works for you. It’s a little bit like education, everyone learns differently, everyone has a different way of doing things.
Oh but, yeah, listen to me on that ‘forcing yourself to write’ thing, you might hate yourself, or you might hate me while doing it – most likely me but whatever – but just get words on a page.
Also, don’t be so anxious about sharing your work. Your fic is not representative of your self-worth. Don’t write because you want validation or have everyone praise you. Write because you enjoy it and get happy if even one person reads your fic and loves it because these things tend to turn out like a popularity contest and a lot of new writers get lost in the crowd (I mean, like 6-8 things will pop out daily so unless you have a following already, people may or may not leave you until a lot later) so
1) Don’t be upset if you don’t receive any comments until a month (or 5) later 2) Be happy you finished something! Look at what you’ve accomplished rather than focus on the extraordinarily high expectations you’ve put on yourself 3) Have fun
That’s it for me on advice. #fluffwriter signing out.

Theforgottenpromises: SQ Supernova Author Interview
Here is our interview with theforgottenpromises  on their story  “Clarity In The Fog”
What inspired your story?
I was so lucky to have regalducky’s beautiful artpiece as a starting point.  The words used, the colors, the darkness, the angst. I was sold. And then I suppose after considering about 341 different ways to interpret and work with what regalducky offered, I landed on one because of a comment my sister made when I asked her what to do. “What if Emma isn’t physically gone? What if she just mentally checked out?” I told her no of course, then shamelessly stole that idea and claimed it as my own. A true younger sibling. I tried to get some of the whole hijacked mind feel from The Hunger Games: Mockingjay into it too but stories have a habit of leading a life of their own so I didn’t exactly end up where I thought i was headed. Which was totally fine in the end!
Let’s get deep: why do you write?
I write because I love it. I love stories. I love words. I love the beauty one can create by putting the right words in the right order. English isn’t my first language, but I fell for it even before I even knew how to understand it. To me, there’s no better language to express emotions in than English and writing is just another excuse to use more of it. That said I’ve always have a very lively imagination, creating entire fantasy worlds in my head before I could even read or write properly and now, 20 years later I’m still dreaming. I never wrote much because I didn’t know where to start or end (and because I never. just. sat. down. and. wrote.), but then I found this little thing called fanfiction. It offered pre-existing characters with their own traits and some rules to work with as well as a potential audience. After reading a lot of it I decided to try my hand at it myself. So far, so good!
Do you ever have conversations with your characters, and talk back to them?
No, I just write what’s in my imagination.
What is your favorite type of writing to do?
I still feel like I’m new to the whole writing thing. So far the only stories I’ve ever written and finished are all fanfiction. Writing about romance is a given for me and somehow I’m incapable of writing a story that doesn’t end up with a good dose of angst in it. There’s something beautiful in deep emotions. Good AND bad. So at some point I’ll always find myself writing about that.
If you could live out one scene of your writing what would it be?
I once wrote a oneshot about SwanQueen taking a cable car ride together  (A View To Live For), which was inspired by my own terror when riding one of those up a mountain! And I tend to slip phrases or little habits of my personal life or people around me into my stories, but nothing super major yet. As for the scene I would want to live out… I suppose romantic ice skating on a frozen pond surrounded by fairy lights (Storybrooke Secret Santa) wouldn’t be completely awful.
How do you shape your characters?
Writing fanfiction, you don’t really get to create your characters from scratch. I do, however, have very set head canons for the existing characters that I will rarely stray from because I seriously hate reading/writing about things that feel out of character to me.

Author Post — trixwitch!
We sat down with trixwitch  to talk about Heroes and Lovers, their process, and their Supernova adventure! trixwitch had the following to share with us:
For "Heroes and Lovers," I decided to adapt the entire story arc of the season 4A finale, where the Author traps everyone except Henry in his book - Heroes and Villains. This presented a really interesting challenge of deciding which elements from the canon story to keep, which to adapt, and which to leave out. I knew I wanted Bandit Regina to immediately fall in love with Emma, so my first thing to figure out what how they would meet. In the show, we never see Emma's experience of entering the world of the new book - we first see her when she's been imprisoned by Evil Queen Snow, and we hear that she called herself the savior. That gave me a lot of freedom to just make up a story for Emma, while still making a SwanQueen version of the scenes that we actually see in the show.
I like to have the major plot points of a fic planned out first, but then I just start writing and see where my characters take me. It took me a bit to figure out Bandit Regina's voice. I wanted her to be recognizably Regina, but also clearly different. What I ended up using as the basis of her character was something that I have Emma express in the fic - that Bandit Regina is Regina if her life had gone differently. Bandit Regina is ruled by sadness rather than anger, but she's still that incredibly caring and loving Regina who has been knocked around by life. That's what I always like to highlight about SwanQueen - two women who are so ready to love but have so many defenses up before they can get there. In this case, Bandit Regina led both of them to finding that tenderness a lot faster than I think season 4 Regina would have.
The next big problem I had to deal with, and don't we all, was Hook. I really didn't want to just have Emma forget about him, because in the canon version this is kind of where she realizes that she loves him. So instead I had her realize that she's now capable of love, and that Regina is much better option than Hook. When I'm doing re-writes like this, I like to try to find the core of the character arc and adapt it, and so I wanted Emma to be in that opening up place where she's still tough and fights hard, but also knows and sees her own heart.
Finally, I did want to mention that I combine magic and sex into nearly all of my fics, and this one is no different. Magic is such a powerful metaphor for our deeply held emotions, and I think it has everything to do with sex and intimacy. That's why most of their sex scenes involve magic, too.

Author Interview — E_Panda!
We sat down with @cmb-tryingtomakeitworksomehow to talk about At Roni’s, their process, and their Supernova adventure!
What inspired your story?
Season seven's lack of Swan Queen
How do you form your stories? Do you outline beforehand or write by the seat of your pants? Do you write linearly or out of order?
This story was outlined because of having to work the story around the script. It flowed quite nicely into the original storyline, I just wanted to put as many fluffy SwanQueen moments in as I could and it gave me a chance to write Emma's character with a touch of vulnerable traits.
What in your fic are you most proud of?
I'm most proud of Espe's and Regina's relationship in the story. I loved the idea of Regina being mom to Henry and Espe.
Is there anything you'd change now?
I would maybe tie up a few of my lose ends like Emma's past and a few odd things i missed out. But this is the piece im am most proud to be author of. I learnt a lot from the experience and also got to talk to other writers which was a great experience. Thank you to everyone who helped me. Especially S.K Allen, without her help this fic might not ever been done in time.
How do you deal with writers' block?
Watch lots of SwanQueen videos and read other peoples SwanQueen fanfictions.
Was this Supernova experience different than your typical writing experience?
Yes, the fact that i got to talk and get help from other writers definitely made the writing experience a lot more enjoyable.
Any advice to other writers who might want to write a longfic, or participate in Supernova next year?
Don't be scared to ask questions. Don't shy away from the difficult parts and always make sure your enjoying writing.

Author Interview — Lockedsoulsam!
We sat down with Lockedsoulsam to talk about We’ll Always Have Hope, their process, and their Supernova adventure!
What inspired your story?
I really love the stories about SwanQueen family. Around season 6 Swen were always joking about how Baby Hope was actually a result of Regina and Emma’s roadtrip for Henry’s graduation. So I wanted to explore that concept a little further and decided to write it
How do you form your stories? Do you outline beforehand or write by the seat of your pants? Do you write linearly or out of order?
Normally, I don’t outline. I just go with the flow and see what happens. I keep a google docs page for notes and little things to remember so that the story doesn’t have huge plot holes. With the Supernova, I outlined meticulously and sometimes I followed it and sometimes I didn’t.
What in your fic are you most proud of?
I’m most proud of being able to say that I wrote Emma and Regina in a way that I love to see them. Positive and in love
Is there anything you'd change now?
No
How do you deal with writers' block?
I had a Spotify playlist that I would put on shuffle and repeat for hours.
Was this Supernova experience different than your typical writing experience?
Yes, it was more strict and this actually had deadlines. I was afraid I wouldn’t finish in time, but the experience was a fun one. Getting to talk to different SQ writers was amazing
Any advice to other writers who might want to write a longfic, or participate in Supernova next year?
Have what you want to write as an idea now and make sure you want to stick with it. Most of all have fun with it. Don’t forget to thank your artist !
You can read We’ll Always Have Hope on AO3, along with Lockedsoulsam’s other works! And don’t forget to feed the author!

SQ Supernova Author Interview
---with Laiz (call me Lai - pronounced as ‘lie’) for Coffee, Cooking and Cuddling. @sqsupernova
What inspired your Supernova story?
I'm not sure what made it happen, but the first idea that came was "ok, they'll meet in the supermarket and have completely different groceries and hate each other, but they'll keep meeting there, bumping into each other". Eventually I had to cut the story short, cut some scenes (a lot of sex scenes and Mary Margaret scenes, LOL) and characters because I didn't had the time to develop it as I wanted, but I kept the idea of how they would meet.
Tell us about your writing history for fandom/general, and have you participated in SQ big bang or writing challenges prior?
That's the first time I posted a "long story" and the first time I posted a SwanQueen story. It's difficult to write for Swens because they are all so talented it makes everything I write look like shit, seriously. Rizzoli & Isles fans are usually older and more critical (Yes, you are, guys. But I love you. LOL), but Rizzoli & Isles it's not as popular as Once Upon a Time and the story was smaller, so I guess it was less intimidating posting Pour Your Heart Out.
It was not the first time writing a longer story, though. I wrote a lot over the last six years about me and my girlfriend, but that was only for us, nobody read that. (Babe, if you're reading this, you're the best reviewer and my biggest inspiration, thank you for encouraging me.) Then, last year, I decided to post a Rizzoli & Isles one-shot that turned into a two-shot. But when I saw the challenge I thought, "Ok, this is how I'm gonna do it. This is how I'm gonna get the courage and motivation to write something bigger that's not about me."
What is an interesting fact about you personally or related to your writing process?
I just write things that come to my mind in topics. Like, "they meet at the supermarket; completely different groceries; hate each other; Emma's detective; Regina's a bookshop owner; Henry and Emma meet and love each other". Then I use this as a frame to the chapter/story I'm writing. I also like to keep my TV on mute, my lights off and use only a bedside lamp while I'm lying on my bed writing on the computer.
What other stories have you written? Which is your favorite?
As I said I wrote some things about me and my girlfriend and posted a Rizzoli & Isles two-shot, I also have some stuff I never posted (both Rizzles and SwanQueen stories). You can find both Coffee, Cooking and Cuddling and my Rizzoli &Isles story Pour your heart out on AO3. But I would probably choose one of the stories about me and my girl as my favorite, the ones about our future together; those were what made me write in the first place.
What is your favorite type of fan-fiction?
Alternate Universe
Is there anything else you'd like people to know about you?
I'm kind of a perfectionist with my writing, I always think of/see something that I could do better, so it was very difficult for me to post this story as I did: in a hurry, without sending it to my beta, knowing I couldn't develop the story as I had imagined it... But I'm very happy for being a part of the challenge and for the good things that happened to me while I was writing that made my writing time scarce.
