tell me why i’m a third of the way through the semester and I just now realized one of my professors is literally the guy who did the art for the be more chill graphic novel
School is in session! This week on the Vintage RPG Podcast we welcome back friend of the show Mark Sable, who is about to start teaching a class called Writing Adventures for Tabletop RPGs. Seems like something y'all might be interested in. We talk a bit about game design, about teaching games and the nebulous ways we've approached how-to in RPGs. Marks class is eight sessions starting February 6 and is part of the School of Visual Arts' continuing education program, meaning anyone can sign up!
Thomas Woodruff is a former SVA professor who was the head of both the illustration and cartooning programs for years. His abuse and derogatory treatment of students is well documented and extensive. He's been nominated for four Eisner awards this year, despite his outward disdain for comics and excessive efforts to push students away from the art form.
Some wonderful people have started a petition to remove Woodruff and his book from the Eisner ballot, and you can sign it here.
The following is just taste of Woodruff's terrible impact on SVA students over the years, all posted online before his Eisner noms were announced...
"Had a habit of casual racist comments about East Asian students."
"Enjoys making students cry, enjoys inflicting harm on students verbally."
"Woodruff is so narcissistic, racist, belittling, and down right vulgar."
"Head of the illustration major was Thomas Woodruff, who is the most racist."
"He doesn't even bother to hide his disdain for the comics medium, he has no knowledge of it or its history."
NYC: this Wednesday 5/3/23 is PRINT SLAM 15--the SVA RisoLAB's end-of-the-semester sale and exhibition. It's free and open to the public, so if you're in the area and want to browse and purchase risograph-printed goods come on by! My minicomics Broomistega & Thrinaxodon and Deep Time, in addition to the purple version of my Goblin Week 2023 print will be at PRINT SLAM 15!
Drew myself a new portrait for turning 34 this month.
I also started teaching at the School of Visual Arts for the BFA Animation department and having been having a lot of fun already.
Happy Virgo season 🌿
I started this blog 12/13 years ago as a student. Funny to come back full circle.
It’s finally complete! So for context, I’m studying to be a cartoonist and at my school we have a junior thesis which involves adapting a scene from a book into a 6 page comic. I chose Be More Chill and this is the final product! Hope y’all enjoy
hey so do you like SVA??? i was just accepted for BFA comics/cartooning and i’d love to hear ur opinion b4 i officially commit!
I think this is late! But hi! I'm also BFA Cartooning/Comics so this is perfect!
SVA Is an amazing school program wise, they have dozens of courses and options for you to take that are amazing and very helpful, my fvaourites have been Storytelling an dInking this year!
Of course there are cons to lots of schools, cons here are Science & Humanity classes are a REQUIREMENT every year and that some of the professors REALLY suck, but there's also AMAZING teacher who quickly beocome your friend!
Living wise is complicated, if you're commuting then this doesn't apply, but building wise is iffy too. 23rd is an older building and has a lot of things that dont work/are slow, but their pros are a full sized kitchen, a table and a common living space, as well as a big hang out space and it's closer to classes. 24th i have not had any problems with except for wifi issues and the fact there is no full sized kitchen in dorms. BUT Major pros and little cons to both living situations
All in all, I love this school, I personally think it's been money well spent so far, i've learned so much about the art world, how it works both as a freelance artist and in big corporations (how to get jobs with disney, marvel, dc, sony and other studios!) They have incredible internships available, depending on teacher you can work on a lot of real-world expiernce to! I'd say it's worth it but to of course look well into any other options you have especially since SVA is NOT a cheap school to attend (i am in severe debt /hj)
also like a lot of the professors here are like lowkey famous and im always in awe whenever i recognise a name on my professor list it's insane
