Digimon Survive Week 2024
Day 3: Othermon
Tumblr media
No, I will not explain myself.
(Actually, I will. Explanation under the cut)
Day 3: Brothermon lol
So I kinda cheated with this one. This goes along with the theory I had of Shuuji's brother having a Terriermon because the moment you see Lopmon on the cover of this game, you know the guy's got a sibling (and he's not having a good time).
But here we see from Terriermon's POV how their relationship pans out before the game and the feelings that sort of bleed through from their partners from the human world. There was a bit more dialogue in my initial draft but I cut it down to simplify.
Oh and I got that bit from Hurricane Touchdown when Terriermon says "Chocomon laughed" (I cry every time).

If two strangers (sirens) (wolves in sheep's clothing) whispered in your ear (with honeyed words) (with devouring certainty) of a way out, a path to ease the pain of guilt (filling your head with false obligations) (all it would cost is your life)… would you listen? Would you be swayed?
Would you see them (what they truly are) before it’s too late?
My piece for Survive Week, Day 2: Cooperation (Image description in the Alt text).
Did I really take one of the more lighthearted-sounding prompts and turn it into something sinister? Why yes, yes I did. I love the psychological horror of the library. These lines of dialogue are so creepy and fascinating (to me) that I wanted to reinterpret them in the worst way possible. Thank goodness for Agumon being there in the real version!
Tumblr media
This is the first part of a short series I’m calling “Bad End Takumas,” focusing on a few times in Survive’s narrative where Takuma almost makes a poor choice or meets an unfortunate end, but doesn’t (at least, canonically). I find the what-if-he-did alternate reality of those moments really interesting to think about, even though I can't bring myself to play the game’s actual Bad Ending! The next one in this series won’t be ready for Survive Week, but I do plan on finishing it eventually >:)
Here’s an alternate, desaturated version I liked just as much, as well as textless versions of each.

@surviveweek Day 1: New World
I procrastinated on this and then finished it right now- But I didn't want to miss the day for Survive Week! Admittedly I also wasn't sure what to do for this prompt so heheheh.
I probably wont do all the prompts like I did last year since I dont know what to do for all of them but still! It's nice to celebrate this VN again.
This is a sort of companion piece to my previous Survive Week first day entry. Though instead of the red spider lillies at the beginning of the game that introduce you to the kemonogami world, it's the portal at the end that shows you what changed of the old one!

Word Count: 762 Prompt: Cooperation Featured Characters: Takuma Momozuka & Minoru Hinata & Kaito Shinonome A/N: Okay, so I said I was going to explore other characters, but there are a couple days where I return to the main eight. This is one of those days. There is some slightly spoiler-ish territory? But in reality, this is just a kind of made up scenario of a brainstorming session my three favorite boys go through. (I say favorite as if I don't love Shuuji and Ryo to a degree too, haha.) It's been a while since I've written them or witnessed them, so I hope it's not terribly OOC. But nevertheless, I persist! @surviveweek
They needed a plan, but they couldn't agree on anything. Well. Correction. The boys couldn't agree on anything.
Aoi, Saki, and Miu had slunk away to let them all work it out. Takuma, Minoru, and Kaito stood in a triangle of sorts, three points of one shape, but all vastly different-minded. The Kemonogami stood in the spaces between them, a triangle of their own, but they hadn't weighed in on this particular discussion just yet. It seemed they had a silent agreement to let them work it out on their own. For once, Takuma did wish that Agumon at least would interject with something, anything.
Minoru sighed, his hands propped on his hips as his entire body slumped with the motion. "We're going in circles. Obviously we need to do something, but…" His expression crumpled, and he kept his eyes fixed on his feet. "I'm not sure we should be risking so much with everything's that happened."
"There's probably no other way," Kaito insisted, his arms crossed tightly across his chest. If he didn't keep his hands contained, they would start flying, and then nothing would get done. "It might be the only way we'll all get out of here."
Takuma agreed with both of them, in some sense. Yes, it was possible that fighting their way out seemed to be the only way to get things done in this world, but Minoru was right—so much had been lost already. How much more before there was nothing left? No one left? And why was it that he was caught in the middle of this? Again?
Kaito glanced down at Dracmon, who stared back at him in silence. "Do you three have anything to add?"
"You know I'm going to follow you no matter what you do, Kaito," Dracmon said simply.
"And I'll follow you, Takuma!" Agumon said, raising one of his clawed hands. Takuma couldn't ask for a better answer from his partner. It was support, and he knew he was going to need it in the coming hours, even days.
All eyes turned to Falcomon, who held up his wings. "You both have valid points. We'll need to be smart about this."
"Exactly. The smart thing to do is to face it head-on. They won't expect it, after everything." Kaito gestured vaguely, referring to the mysterious "they" that was after them.
"But what if they do? We already tried something like that, and Shuuji—" Minoru's mouth twisted, and he saw the pain flash across Kaito and Takuma's faces. What had happened to Ryo had been terrible. What happened to Shuuji… indescribable. Even if Minoru tried, it just made his stomach twist. Swallowing back the bile that wanted to creep up his throat, he continued, "Bad things have happened when we've tried this."
Kaito shook his head in exasperation. "We know better now. If we all stick together, it should be fine. Takuma?" He turned to Takuma, who had retained the same thoughtful look on his face during this entire discussion.
"You're both right," Takuma began. "We need to be careful, and we need to be smart. I do think sticking together, at least better than we have been, will help. Sitting around rarely works out for us. We usually end up doing something rash."
"What do you suggest, Takuma?" Falcomon asked, his eyes seeming particularly wise at this moment.
Takuma closed his eyes to put words to the shapeless thoughts in his head. "We make a plan. A much more thought-out plan than before. We need to be more aware that failure could happen at any moment." He paused, letting out a breath. "Overall, we need to stay together. Keep an eye on each other. Be honest with each other." Slowly, he met Minoru's gaze and then Kaito's. "Then we can make sure we take care of each other."
There was a moment of silence, of contemplation. Kaito and Minoru kept looking at him, processing his proposal. Then they looked at each other and nodded.
"Sounds good to me," Minoru said, the slump disappearing as he straightened and smiled.
Kaito's smile wasn't nearly as wide, but Takuma knew it was genuine all the same. "Yeah. Let's try it."
If this had been a team meeting, Takuma would have suggested they all put their hands in. That didn't seem applicable here, especially not with Falcomon's wings or the eyes on Dracmon's hands, but he pretended they had done it. "Then let's go tell the others."
It was the most hopeful any of the three of them had felt in a long time.

i bet logan wasn't even asked nicely to pass his car to alex. which is so infuriating. i understand that money talk, alex is their first driver and has more chances at finishing in the points, but the disrespect i cannot deal. if i were logan, i'd be so pissed. the lack of faith istg. such teamwork, you guys. like why not focusing all the energy into helping him scoring points?? plus, how can you punish someone for something that's clearly not their fault? everybody on that team expects logan to just back up, and he obviously has no say in it. ew.

to the next stage of our adventure! digimon survive week 2024 day 7: post-game / future personal thoughts under the cut - less about the artwork and more about shuuji and lopmon themselves. a long rambling containing major spoilers and heavy topics. will cause whiplash. proceed with caution.
other than the fact this may be boring and long-winded, cw and tw: there will be mentions of self-harm and suicide. if these topics make you uncomfortable, please step back. if you're sure, then alright. i'm aware this is a weird place to ramble about shuuji and lopmon considering the notorious highlight of their story would match the themes of day 5 (villains) and day 6 (dark & loss) better. unfortunately (ironically?) i never planned to feature them for those days, so... pretty sure i'm not the only one feeling this, but when i discovered that a good part of the fandom seems to loathe shuuji with utmost passion, even after they claimed to have completed the game, i was confused. the way his death happened and (understanding) the cause made me uncomfortable for a while, but never drove me to the point of hate... once i recovered from the initial shock, what i felt towards him was more pity, then respect (on truthful route). i feel shuuji should have been one of the most appreciated characters in survive. yet it was the opposite that happened. (between you and me though, knowing there was this discourse with the fact digimon survive is a visual novel, i'm not that surprised it turned out this way...) from my point of view, lopmon evolving into wendimon then killing shuuji symbolizes suicide, the act of taking one's own life. it was the climax of shuuji's mental breakdown, leading him to basically self-destruct, causing damage to everyone around him and ultimately himself. lopmon evolved, just like he hoped. but failed to do it like other kemonogami partners (maintaining control of themselves and fending off enemies). the next and final outcome was death, through his own partner actually eating him alive too. it reminds me how when someone thought they have prepared well for something important yet it failed spectacularly, the devastation and frustration would eat them in the same way from inside. and they probably would for one second think, "i'm better off dead". the more i pondered about it, the more it hit home, so of course, the last thing i could do is hate him, when his struggles sound similar to my own - having to rely on consistent achievements to prove your value, to feel you are worth living and not a waste of resources. the part where shuuji went all abusive on lopmon felt like the equivalent of pushing yourself to the extreme to reach your goal, to the point of neglecting your own needs. it's like a student so absorbed in their study, sacrificing food and sleep, until their body eventually snaps and shuts down for good (...this in fact happened to one of the students at my previous workplace. she was in her last year of high school. life was just about to truly start for her when her classmate informed us of her sudden death). even in truthful route where shuuji and lopmon survive that point, things aren't immediately nice and easy for him. you can see that he still has self-doubts, and what i think is impostor's syndrome. he could be making a great contribution to the team and still put himself down for having done "nothing". i have found it interesting that artists and writers tend to be especially fond of shuuji. so perhaps it's not just the matter of one's upbringing - whether you were raised in a harsh, competitive environment and/or with family with (unreasonably) high standards so you can relate more easily to him - but also whether one can see just what every struggle shuuji and lopmon went through symbolizes shuuji's mental state. out of all survive characters, i think shuuji and lopmon pulled off this thing called "surviving" the hardest, no joke. which is why i almost always gravitate to drawing them happy because that's what they deserve :') after all this, what i also would like to say is, it's okay if a character makes you uncomfortable. it's okay if you hate a character. but never, ever bring down the character to people who like them or even consider them their favorite or comfort character. if you must, do it in your own space and only with like-minded people.

Shuuji's Library
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thoughts and spoilers under the cut.
@surviveweek
Day 4: Supporting characters
So once again I cheated with this prompt and chose the library as the supporting 'character'. I like the concept of important items and places being like silent observers. (I even have this going for Buster Sword lol). They get kind of infused with the user's feelings/memories or if its a place, it observes the people coming and going. In this case, the library has been housing Shuuji since he was young.
There's about 5 chapters in this series and explores how over the years, the library becomes important enough to him that his memories would bring the library to the other world.
(I told someone before that when the prof mentioned that it mustve been taken from someone's memories recently, my first thought was 'couldn't be Ryo' 😅. But Aoi recognises it in her focus path so...)
I posted this one last year but I'm not too fond of the art style. I took away the trees since I realise its not part of the real world.

Survive Week, Day 1 (A New World)
I love point-and-click adventure games, I love Digimon Survive, and I love the little optional puzzle in Part 1 with the vinegar and the spirit lamp. So I decided imagine what Survive might look like as a point-and-click adventure game, in the form of this mock screenshot. A new (old) world, indeed! I based it mainly off of LucasArt's UI, even though I exclusively played King's Quest/Sierra games as a kid :)
Genuinely though, I would adore playing a version of Survive where a) Your key item inventory mattered a bit more, b) You could gain affinity by solving little inventory object puzzles around the school for your friends, and c) MORE TERRIBLE PUNS, particularly when you (Takuma/the player) dies though if the story and everything else was exactly the same, that would create some pretty horrible mood whiplash, wouldn't it?
But SPEAKING of terrible puns, here are some bonus text boxes showing what would happen if you decided to GIVE MINORU'S SOCK to RYO:
