Just heard that legendary artist and comic creator Tim Sale (May 1, 1956 – June 16, 2022) has passed away at the age of 66.

Sale was collaborator with Jeph Loeb on such stories as Batman: Long Halloween, Batman Dark Victory, Superman For All Seasons, Catwoman in Rome and the Marvel Color stories of Spider-Man Blue, Daredevil Yellow, Captain America White, Hulk Grey.

Sale also drew covers and short stories for a number of independent companies.

May He Rest in Peace.

Finally finished my homage to Zack Snyder, Henry Cavill's Superman and Superman: For All Seasons. Absolutely fell in love with Tim Sale and Bjarne Hansen's artwork for the book, and got an idea to honor it with a drawing of a tender moment between Martha and Clark. I'm eternally grateful to Zack for Man of Steel and Batman v Superman and I'm holding out hope that one day we'll get to see the Snyder Cut of JL. There are two variants: one with text, one without. RAMBLIN REVIEW: Superman: For All Seasons

'Superman: For All Seasons' is regularly on "best Superman stories" lists. I hadnt read it until now, and I gotta say IT IS EARNED. This is less of a "year one" story (though it definitely has that aspect to it) and more of a character examination. The story is about Superman but Clark gets none of the narration at any point in the story. If you want to know why Superman doesnt just up n takeover the world, this is gonna be that story. It's mentioned at several times even that he could (or that people are afraid he will), but he never does. Sure, he's an alien but Superman was raised in Smallville, Kansas. So he has inhuman abilities but small-town farm-boy values. I dunno. If it doesnt click with you, read this story. I do want to say that Jeph Loeb has a wonderful grasp on who Clark is and where he's from. That's the writing. The artwork is a different story. Tim Sale has a unique style to him. I like it, but it's not gonna be for everyone. Some may find it an obstacle that the writing may or may not overcome. For me though, it kinda works hand-in-hand. Sale actually dedicated it to Norman Rockwell and you very much get that vibe here. For the purposes of reading, there's a couple 2-page splashes that you'll breeze through. However, you can also pause and just take in the gorgeous artwork and landscape that they've made here. It may not always be the cleanest art, but it definitely fits. There's just something... "from the heart" about it all. It's a really moving story overall and if you like Superman in any format on any level, you should absolutely check this one out. Double up if you're from a small town (JeffCo, I see you).

P.S. The edition I got from the County library includes like three other short stories from later issues, but with Loeb & Sale reunited (colorists are different) and they fit naturally and work incredibly well. Ok, two of the three. The third one is literally two pages that I glanced over, but whatever. The other two are SO GOOD though, that if you werent already feeling some feels, you probably will by the end of "Sam's Story" (though I also know that "Sam" is Sam Loeb, Jeph's son that died very young, so it hits a little harder if you know this is a legitimate person being inserted into the story).

Anyway, 5 stars, must read.

Splintered

The pen light in his gloved hand gives enough precise luminescence to skim through the backlogs in this dark room, filing cabinets lining the walls and cutting across the floor in ordered rows. The organization is decently consistent within, files aligning as sense would dictate them to.

Volke can appreciate that, has rifled through enough private offices and personal records to see the difference between competent filing and disarray. Such makes his task easier, not that he has found great success despite the ease.

Hydra is known by the Daily Planet, Volke is sure of that much. But by claims of these archives it is an old knowledge, from a bygone era. His father’s time, actually. Stories of Western victories, of destroyed bases, of a company of American soldiers that spearheaded the advance through Germany’s hills.

There is nothing in the more recent notes of the vague current of Hydra that is spreading in the underlying murk of this city.

Frustration burns in his blood, but Volke has worked through far worse aggravation. If these files refuse to give up the evidence that someone in this building is in league with those that once held his leash, than Volke will have to further his investigation. The network will have to be his next avenue of attack, perhaps should have been his first, despite the greater risk therein.

Clark’s shoulders heaved one last time as he swiped a hand across his eyes. “Okay,” he sniffled. “If there’s no other way.”

The demon rolled her eyes at the crying man, and let out a sigh, her fingers coming to massage at her temples finding the pressure between them only increase with his crying. “Look, I suppose I could find another way of getting rid of the litter of kittens.”

Clark adopted a wide stance, arms folding over the considerable expanse of his chest. “You know exactly what you did, young man,” he returned lowly. “I’m surprised you thought it would escape my notice.”

Dick frowned as he thought back on all the things he could have done wrong, things that manly could have gotten Superman upset with him. “Is this because I stole one of your capes? Or a few of your jackets?” He offered, hoping it was for one of those smaller reasons, and if not, well he had just outted himself as a thief. Oops.
