His hiking boots are almost new, though he’s been wearing them around campus for a few weeks now since he read that new boots can be more hindrance than help if they’re not broken in.

Still, he’s glad. He’s glad to be meeting Suo in Nagasaki and not dragging him there, though it would have been nice to have the company even for the short trip. He’s glad Suo asked.

i can't stop thinking about all the nao-chan / suou parallels bc of that damn old lady tomato picking scene. it's about both of them succeeding in a place far away from home and in something that connects so many people but being unable to return to that home for years bc of complicated familial relationships. it's about a teenager trying to bring pieces of home back to them. it's about both of them wanting to be an inspiration to the next generation but being filled with their own insecurities. it's about their motherly figures wanting desperately for them to come back home but being unable to communicate that so they instead use food as a love language. it's about loving your family even though they've hurt you and you've hurt them and still thinking they are home.
