REVIEW | "AEW: Fight Forever" | B3 - Boston Bastard Brigade
Tumblr media
Growing up, I loved pro wrestling. The likes of Jake “The Snake” Roberts, Ted DiBiase, and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin seemed larger than life when I witnessed their matches. I’ve been on-again and off-again when it comes to watching pro wrestling, with my time seemingly ending in 2002 after watching Shawn Michaels defeat Triple H at Summerslam. But in 2019, a new dog entered the junkyard, in the form of All Elite Wrestling. Once again, I was hooked thanks to the athletic prowess of Darby Allin, Orange Cassidy, and — yes — Danhausen.
Which leads me to AEW: Fight Forever, the wrestling organization’s first official foray into the video games market. Developed by Yuke’s, the game was to be a spiritual successor to — in my opinion — the best sports game on the Nintendo 64: WWF No Mercy. As I booted it up and began to play it, I felt like I was 15 again, opening up cans of whoop-ass and collecting wins like I was a true champion. However, even with my nostalgia goggles tightly on, I couldn’t help but recognize the wrinkles that AEW: Fight Forever needs to iron out.
Tumblr media
Like the Nintendo 64 era of THQ wrestling titles, the game features a good dose of content. On top of featuring over fifty wrestlers to choose from, AEW: Fight Forever features a plethora of modes to sink your teeth into. From your run-of-the-mills singles and tag team matches to the likes of Casino Battle Royales, there are many ways to experience what All Elite Wrestling is all about. There’s even a couple of their trademark styles, such as Unsanctioned Lights Out and the Exploding Barbed Wire Deathmatches, the latter of which has more pyro than your average Rammstein concert. (You can even initiate the lame sparkler pyro that occurred when Kenny Omega faced Jon Moxley, which shows the sense of humor AEW has.)
Controlling a fight is a lot easier than I imagined; in fact, there were times my Xbox Series X controller almost felt as smooth as using the Nintendo 64 one. Grappling, climbing turnbuckles, and initiating submissions felt natural in my hands, thanks in part to an excellent tutorial featured in the game. With that being said, getting a hold of a weapon is a lot trickier, and not because referee Aubrey Edwards was keeping an eye on me. Nay, standing near the ring to grab a weapon sometimes makes my wrestler go back into the ring, rather than get hold of a kendo stick or a bag of tacks.

Let's Duel! - Sherlock (2010-2017) vs Elementary (2012-2019) Hey remember that Sherlock Holmes show? "Which one?" you ask? Exactly, I reply! But also, which one was best? WWE Summerslam 2019 Review
So before I get into the show, I am going to try something new on some of these reviews. Sometimes I watch the big shows with my girlfriend, who will now be referred to as HazyHannah, and she wanted me to throw in some of her comments. So at the end of each grade section, imma write down some things that she said during the match. If you want to check out her blog, it is @hanster36.
Drew Gulak vs. Oney Lorcan for the WWE Cruiserweight Championship: This was the first match of the kickoff show, which was disappointing to see, but something had to be in this spot. Gulak started out with a vicious shotgun dropkick, but the two mat technicians naturally went hold for hold right after that. Lorcan was actually keeping up with Gulak, so he issued a vicious slam right afterwards, then moving back into some holds. Lorcan didn’t actually regain the advantage until he took things to the outside for a hard hitting brawl. Lorcan then rolled Gulak back into the ring, only for Gulak to lock in the Gulock for a quick submission sequence. They then started with a striking contest, which Gulak won with a vicious series of slaps, finishing off by locking in the Gulock, but Lorcan rolled through for a very near fall. Lorcan then picked up Gulak and dealt several slaps and European uppercuts. Lorcan tried to hit the Half and Half Suplex, but Gulak held onto the ring skirt. As the ref went to put it back in place, Gulak nailed Lorcan with a right to the throat, and then a Cyclone Crash for the win.
Grade: B-. Pretty good match. They are very similar wrestlers so they blended together quite well. The two ripped into each other with vicious strikes, and Lorcan only got madder and madder as the match went on, as he usually does. He was overwhelming Gulak, so Gulak had to bend the rules a bit to get the win. He didn’t outright cheat, but this was far from an honest victory. Interesting to see where this goes.
Apollo Crews vs. Buddy Murphy: finally, Murphy’s debut match. This should have happened months ago, on TV. Murphy started with an awesome high knee for a near fall right out of the gate. He continued to follow up with various stiff kicks and strikes to a grounded Crews. Crews fought back a bit and they had some back and forth. At one point, Murphy went for a crossbody off the middle rope, but Crews countered with a samoan drop, followed by a moonsault for a near fall. The two continued to fight, and Murphy was able to nail a cheeky nandos kick in the corner, followed by a powerbomb for a near fall. The two then continued to fight on the outside. Murphy then threw Crews into the barricade and followed up with a tope con hilo. After Murphy threw Crews back into the ring, Rowan ran in from behind and started to beat Murphy down. Murphy won the match by disqualification.
Rowan threw Murphy all around ringside, and wiped him out with a running crossbody. He finished it off with a powerbomb into the ring post.
Grade: C+. The two were actually having a pretty good match here. Crews is a great striker just like Murphy, with just enough flying between the two of them to have an exciting contest for the pre show. However, the finish was not good. Yes, Murphy won, but he looked weak in his victory. And in his first match, he was beaten down ridiculously afterwards. He was not able to really get over because of it, and I really didn’t like that booking. But I won’t lower it too much because their match was decent. More time would have done them good.
Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross vs. The IIconics for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships: I’m glad that these belts actually got on the card. They deserve better than the pre-show, but they need to be built up a bit more before they can hit the main show. Bliss was dressed as Buzz Lightyear ring gear, which for some reason pissed off Corey Graves to no end. It seems like Bliss is going face after winning these belts, which is certainly interesting. Saxton was defending Cross too, this is an odd switch of character. At one point, Bliss was yelling at Peyton Royce on the outside, and then turned right around into a big boot from Billy Cay for a near fall. Royce followed it up with a really nice shinbreaker for a near fall, and threw a tantrum after. She went to continue the assault, but Bliss floored her with a strike to the jaw. She went up for Twisted Bliss, only for Cay to try and pull her off the top rope. Cross yanked Cay off the apron, and Bliss hit Twisted Bliss to retain.
Grade: D. This sucked. The IIconics are just bad. I’m glad they lost the belts. Bliss and Cross have yet to really impress me, but they were not what I disliked about this. The IIconics aren’t very good, and the sudden change in opinion from the commentators was very odd. It was about half way through the match when Graves started to talk about how he hates that Bliss went soft. That makes sense, but her liking Disney is no reason to start hating her.
Becky Lynch vs. Natalya in a submission match for the Raw Women’s Championship: Nattie came out second because she is from Canada, which is more important than the belt. Naturally, they started with a couple slaps to the face, but Lynch quickly unloaded on her in the corner. Lynch locked in a triangle quickly, but Nattie rolled them to the outside and started to assault the legs. Nattie then gave her a snap vertical suplex, which her leg snapping into the ropes. At one point, Natalya wrapped Lynch’s legs in a sharpshooter on the top rope for a great visual. The only way that Lynch could escape was by falling to the outside. At first I didn’t like that a submission match didn’t have countouts or DQ’s, but it certainly improved the match. At one point, Lynch caught Nattie out of a basement dropkick, and Lynch locked in a sharpshooter of her own. After escaping, Nattie locked in a disarmer, turning the tables and dragging Lynch back into the middle of the ring. As Lynch tried to reverse into her own hold, Nattie had a great reversal into a sharpshooter for an intense submission sequence, where Lynch had to slide out of the ring to escape. Lynch slid back in and locked in the Disarmer for the win.
Grade: B. Pretty good technical exchange to open up the card. Meticulous holds, some nice limb work, just a solid match. The finish was not very dramatic, especially after a much better submission sequence with Nattie in control, but it was certainly the right outcome. The crowd was behind Natalya a lot during this match, so there was a hot atmosphere. It got everyone pumped up, so there was certainly nothing to complain about. HazyHannah (my girlfriend) says: Nattie is a dumb nickname.
Backstage, Trish Stratus was interviewed, and she said that although she is feeling the pressure, that is when she thrives. She said that tonight, she will prove that those who paved the way for the women’s evolution are just as good as the women of today. Stratus declared herself the Queen of Queens, and left.
Dolph Ziggler vs. Goldberg: Ziggler cut a promo, saying that he is the best thing in pro wrestling today. He said that Goldberg fears Ziggler, and Goldberg’s music cut him off. He did not whack his head on the door this time around. The two squared off right away, and Ziggler hit a quick superkick, but Goldberg kicked out at one. Ziggler nailed another, and another kickout at one. Goldberg speared Ziggler out of his shoes, and gave him the jackhammer for the win.
After the match, Ziggler got on the mic and called Goldberg a dipshit and said that he hits like a baby. He told Goldberg to fight him like a man. Golderg walked back to the ring, before Ziggler even got back to his feet. He gave him another spear, and another great sell. Ziggler got on the mic again after Goldberg left, and said that anyone can get lucky twice, and said that he didn’t have balls. He called Goldberg a laughingstock, and said that he will never stay down. When Goldberg got in the ring, he threw the mic away, helped him up, and gave him another wicked spear.
Grade: B+. Everything I wanted it to be. Less than a minute. Wonderful. Above average squash match and Ziggler sold like he was a limp corpse. The extra attacks where what bumped this up to a B+. This was really really fun to see, and even though a legend shouldn’t beat a full time guy, this was an exception. Just some fun stuff. I loved it. HazyHannah says: match of the night. This could have gone on for the rest of the night and I would have been fine with it. “Anyone can get lucky THREE times.”
Before the next match, they showed the international commentators, and they showed the british announce team. It was Carmella and R-Truth, trying to hide. They had an awful accent and it was awesome. Drake Maverick showed up to try to get the pin, but they ran before he got there. Funny stuff, it was nice to see.
AJ Styles vs. Ricochet for the WWE United States Championship: Ricochet was out in a full jumpsuit, looking like a biker Batman. Ricochet quickly used the OC out at ringside to his advantage, jumping off of them to hit Styles with a flying hurricanrana. Styles quickly got the advantage, and started to take out Ricochet’s base. Ricochet sold the leg like really well, even selling it when he hit his offense. At one point, Ricochet went for a springboard forearm, but only used one leg and got a near fall out of it. Several times as Ricochet went for his high impact offense, his knee buckled out from under him and he couldn’t continue. Styles capitalized on this and locked it a Calf Crusher, but Ricochet quickly transitioned into an Anaconda Vice. Ricochet took the advantage, and he had to fight off Anderson and Gallows on the outside, and Ricochet went for a twisting 450 splash, but Styles caught him in the air and transitioned into a Styles Clash for the win. It was an awesome finish.
After the match, the OC hit Ricochet with a Magic Killer and gave a Too Sweet.
Grade: B+. Good stuff from these two, good selling from Ricochet. They had a nice strike based match that was interlaid with some great leg work. Still probably not the best that they can do, but it was fun. That finishing spot was badass too. Really good stuff, but still not as good as I expected. HazyHannah says: Ricochet looked like a robot, and they hid his gorgeous muscles. When a man has that much muscles, you let ‘em pop.
Backstage again, we saw the Street Profits putting over Summerslam and Toronto. As they were talking, Ric Flair came up and they started to dance around with him and wooed a whole bunch. It was cute.
Bayley vs. Ember Moon for the Smackdown Women’s Championship. The two started with a bit of grappling before getting into some nice striking. Bayley worked over Moon’s neck and back with various suplexes. Bayley even locked in a weird reverse boston crab, which looked painful but odd. Moon was able to fight back with some of her very interesting offense, kipping up for a hurricanrana and then a superkick. But when she went for a suicide dive, Bayley countered with a stiff strike to the face. Bayley tried to capitalize with a superplex, but Moon nailed a super hurricanrana, and then a spinout codebreaker for a near fall. Bayley won a bit out of nowhere, with a Bayley to belly off the top for the win.
Grade: B-. They had some good interactions, but it felt like they just started to go from move to move randomly, without much story or reason. Moon looked good though, and got a big pop during one of her near falls. So people like her a lot, she could be big. But it makes sense that Bayley won, this isn’t quite the match where it is her place to lose. I hope they do more with moon in the future, because she is great. HazyHannah says: Ember Moon looks like someone’s first D&D character.
Kevin Owens vs. Shane McMahon, if Owens loses then he quits: Before the match started, Shane got on the mic and called out Elias as the special guest enforcer. Shane rolled out of the ring right away, and Elias prevented Owens from attacking him. Eventually Shane got the first hit, and the two teed off on each other in the corner. At one point, Owens went to attack Shane on the outside, but Elias distracted him and allowed Shane to chuck him off and into the barricade. At one point, Shane tried to go for a Sharpshooter, but Owens pushed him away and nailed a pop up powerbomb, but Elias hopped on the apron and made sure the ref couldn’t count. Elias then threw a chair in the ring, which Owens nearly used, but opted not to. Shane then accidentally nailed Elias with a forearm, so Owens nailed a superkick, aa swanton bomb and a frog splash, but Elias pulled the ref out of the ring and stopped the count. Owens then gave Elias a cannonball off the apron, hitting both Elias and the ref. Owens opted to beat down Elias with a chair while the ref was down, taking him out of the equation. The ref got back in the ring and threw the chair away, so Owens gave Shane a low blow and a stunner for the win.
Grade: C. The overbooking of this match made it better than expected, but it still wasn’t very good. Fun to see some comeuppance. The low blow was satisfying. But this was just fun enough to be okay. HazyHannah says: I just don’t really care about this one.
Charlotte Flair vs. Trish Stratus: the two started with a classic staredown, but Trish came out swinging with a Thesz press. Charlotte quickly gained control by throwing her into the apron. Stratus was very much overwhelmed in this match. at one point she was hit with a big boot off the apron. Charlotte then held the ring ropes open, and then ambushed her as she entered. She was constantly jaw jacking with Stratus, who would constantly get too frustrated and get a couple shots in. At one point, the two battled on the top rope, and Charlotte nearly landed a super powerbomb, but Stratus countered with a hurricanrana for a near fall. Flair targeted the leg afterwards, giving Stratus a bit more respect. Stratus then locked in a figure four of her own to a huge pop. She even bridged into the figure 8, prompting Corey Graves to say “it’s not fair to flair.” Stratus then hit Stratusfaction, but Charlotte still kicked out. Stratus then tried to keep fighting, but Charlotte put her down with a big boot, and locked in the figure 8 for the win.
Grade: B+. This was quite a solid match. Stratus delivered a much better match than a lot of people expected, and I think that she could have another run in WWE if she wanted to. Charlotte was awesome here, playing up the “legend not good enough” angle. Her trash talking was great, and the second that she realized that Stratus was dangerous, Charlotte got serious and put her down. Good story and a good match. HazyHannah says: why do they have to wear extensions? Just let them put their hair up. Vince is a disgusting old man who loves blondes.
Backstage, Bret Hart gave Seth Rollins some encouragement.
Kofi Kingston vs. Randy Orton for the WWE Championship: As the match started Orton tried to give Kingston a pancake, but Kofi was not having the disrespect. Orton tried to push the champion, but Kingston was not just going to take that. He pushed right back and stood up to his old enemy. Early on, Orton pushed Kingston off the top and sent him flying into the barricade. Orton then slowed the pace down attacked each limb. Kofi fought back, giving Orton a boom drop and calling him stupid a bunch. Kingston then tried for trouble in paradise, but Orton caught him and gave him a brutal neckbreaker. on the outside, Kingston gave Orton an awesome flying clothesline to the outside, but he didn’t keep control for long. Orton gave him a hangman’s DDT, and tried for an RKO, but Kofi fought out. Kingston pushed him away and went for a splash, but Orton caught him with an RKO, but Kingston rolled to the outside. Orton then followed him to the outside and went to embarrass him in front of his kids, but Kofi fought back with a flurry of strikes. Then ref called for the bell for a double countout, ending the match in a stupid and BS way, which the crowd definitely agreed with.
Kingston destroyed him with kendo stick shots to the back. He shattered the stick, and every time he hit Orton, the crowd chanted stupid.
Grade: D+. This wasn’t too exciting. The action was slow, they didn’t incorporate the story into the match at all, and the ending was dumb and unnecessary.  Kingston should have won and just finished the feud. Summerslam is a place to cap things off, not start new things. This feud didn’t need to continue, but now it well. Not a good match. HazyHannah says: I fucking hate Orton. He is so boring. When they called him a brick wall, it is only because he has no personality or charisma. He has cool tattoos though.
Finn Balor vs. The Fiend: Wyatt’s entrance was awesome, it was creepy as all hell. He had a lantern in a severed head, and a remixed version of his music. It started with the firefly funhouse but slowly morphed into the darker fiend color scheme, with “Let Me In” showing up word by word on the titantron. He was getting Holy Shit chants the second that he got in the ring. The Fiend changed up his mannerisms to be creepier and more sadistic, and was powering him all around the ring. He delivered wicked strikes to his head, neck and back. He nearly hit sister abigail, but Balor fought out of it with some quick strikes and attacks. Finn went to the top for the Coup de Gras, but the Fiend caught him in the mandible claw and got the pin.
After the match, the lights went out and The Fiend was illuminated with strobe lights, and then he was gone, leaving Balor alone in the ring.
Grade: B-. A perfectly cool squash match. Exactly what it needed to be. It was creepy, showcased a new cool character, and got over with the crowd right away. Now we just need to see how the book the Fiend from here. I hope he isn’t wrestling every week on TV, because he needs a mystique around him. Keep up the firefly funhouse stuff, and let him be cool for a while, at least until he has a story that he needs to lose in. HazyHannah says: Finn looks like he is wearing a diaper. It is really distracting. But it’s a good thing he is wearing one, cuz the Fiend probably made him piss his pants.
Brock Lesnar vs. Seth Rollins for the WWE Universal Championship: Rollins came out with his ribs taped up. Lesnar targeted the ribs, and Rollins sold like he was shot every time. Early on Lesnar went for a German suplex, but Rollins flipped out of it and nailed the curb stomp for a near fall. Rollins then nailed a flying knee, a pair of superkicks, but was caught in an F5 when he went for the curb stomp. Lesnar then picked Rollins up by the wrapping on his ribs and threw him across the ring. Lesnar kept control for a long time, delivering loads of German suplexes. He tried to give Rollins an F5 into the ring post, but Rollins slipped out and shoved him into it. Rollins tried to keep it up, but Lesnar continued with the German suplexes. He even busted out a bear hug to continue the attack on the ribs. Rollins fought back into it and delivered a pair of suicide dives, but Brock caught him on the third and ran him into the ringpost. Lesnar then went for a move through the table, but Seth countered and got him on the table with a superkick, giving him a huge frog splash through it. He and Lesnar got back in the ring, so Lesnar nailed him with another frog splash, and hit a Curb Stomp for yet another near fall. Rollins then went for the curb stomp again, but Lesnar got him up for an F5. Rollins slipped out and nailed another superkick, finishing the match with a Curb Stomp.
Grade: A-. This was a really good match. They had a lot of big spots that were mixed in with working over Rollins’ ribs, and they did a really good job of convincing us that Rollins couldn’t win this. He was doing a great job of being in peril, and it made for a great match. Awesome selling from both guys, and Rollins once again overcame the odds. Match of the night. HazyHannah says: this is the best match of the night and it’s only been 5 minutes.
Overall Grade: B-
Predictions: 9/10. Although the finish of the WWE Championship was dumb.
Pros: Nattie vs. Lynch; goldberg squash; style vs. ricochet; charlotte vs. stratus; fiend debut; main event
Cons: owens vs. shane; kingston vs. orton

Shak’s SummerSlam 2019 Review
Becky(c) v Nattie for the Raw Women’s Title: I give this match a C, it was a bit boring, the crowd didn’t really pop all that much. While the reverse submission holds were neat and it did look like Nattie was wrenching Becky’s arm back the end was rather meh. Nattie “I won’t tap even if you break my arm” taps but looks utterly disinterested when she did.
Goldberg V Ziggler: A..it was everything I wanted to see. Dolph sold the spear like the had been shot, the jackhammer was great and the match was under 2 minutes. Dolph still talking shit after getting almost murdered was amusing and I have no issues with Goldberg coming back to spear him again and again.
AJ(c) v Ricochet for the United States Title: B-, my son will be unhappy as he is a Ricochet fan but it was an alright match. Some good spots, timely involvment by the Good Brothers and Styles catching Ricochet and turning it into a Styles clash was nice. Keeps the momentum of the OC going.
KO v Shane: B - Solid, Shane ended up getting his ass beat, Elias got his ass beat after being introduced as the special guest enforcer. Shane should disappear for a few weeks, I hope.
Bayley(c) v Ember Moon for the Smackdown Women’s Title: C and that is being generous. Too many botches in this match for my taste. Ember I can see as this is her first PPV match but Bayley should know better. They didn’t seem like they were on the same wavelength at all but a nice top rope Bayley to Belly Suplex to end it.
Kofi(c) v Orton for the WWE Championship: D: Match was ok, a few momentum shifts but it wasn’t the big win Kofi needed to solidify his reign as WWE champ and the ending was just, I have no workds for how moronic it was.
Charlotte v Trish: C-: Ok match, Charlotte had to carry Trish for good parts of the match, thought for a moment when Trish hit the “Stratisfaction” finisher could she win but no, Charlotte won which is fine with me. The crowd after the match was cool and the loss doesn’t hurt Trish at all but doesn’t really help The Queen either.
Finn Balor v The Fiend: A+: The entrance for The Fiend, holy shitballs. The lantern that is his old face, the dreadlocks made into the handle was creepy AF and so worked for him. I was gobsmacked and loved it. Finn in all white as the “good guy” was a nice touch. Fairly quick match, nice finish with the mandable claw and the lights going out and Bray being gone when they came back on was awesome. Match of the Night for me.
and finally:
Seth Rollins V Brock Lesnar(c) for the Universal Title: B-: Not too bad, Brock sold for Rollins which is goo. When he picked up Seth with his rib tape and swung him around like a rag doll that was awesome. No surprise despite the beat downs Seth had taken that he won and re-claimed the Universal Title. After the match he looked rather good for a person who had “busted ribs” but whatever, its WWE and continuity isn’t a thing for them.
Overall I would give SummerSlam 2019 a B-, it had some good matches and not so good matches. The ending of the Kofi match put a bad stain on things. I also held onto my WWE Title for the match picks I do with my neighbor by one match! Now its time to relax for a hour then watch the finals of the NJPW G1 Climax.

WWF In Your House V: Season’s Beatings
Tumblr media
Date: December 17, 1995.
Location: Hersheypark Arena in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
Attendance: 7,289.
Commentary: Vince McMahon and Jerry Lawler.

1. Razor Ramon and Marty Jannetty defeated The 1-2-3 Kid and Sycho Sid (with Ted DiBiase).
2. Ahmed Johnson defeated Buddy Landel (with Dean Douglas).
3. Hog Pen Match: Hunter Hearst Helmsley defeated Henry O. Godwin. Hillbilly Jim was the special guest referee.
4. Owen Hart (with Jim Cornette) defeated Diesel via disqualification.
5. Casket Match: The Undertaker (with Paul Bearer) defeated King Mabel (with Sir Mo).
6. WWF World Heavyweight Championship Match: Bret Hart (champion) defeated The British Bulldog (with Jim Cornette and Diana Smith).
My Review
The fifth In Your House is a bizarrely entertaining show. At this point in time, the WWF knew they were in trouble. After all, 1995 was an incredibly rough year for the company from both a creative and financial perspective, and they were looking for anything that could catch fire. Thusly, we get this show, an odd mashup of caskets, hog pens, and evil Santas⏤and it somehow works. It’s a showcase for the WWF to throw stuff at a wall and see what sticks. Fortunately, with the exception of a messy Jeff Jarrett/Ahmed Johnson segment, most of it lands pretty well.
The In Your House concept was still a fairly new one at this time. Its early additions often focused on delivering a bunch of different things you couldn’t get from any other pay-per-view, all for a reasonably cheap price. This show is no exception, but its offerings feel a little more satisfying than usual. The WWF was still firmly ensconced in cartoon gimmickry by late ’95, and this show actually manages to bring the fun to match it. The Hog Pen match is obviously meant to be a bunch of tomfoolery, but the players involved revel in it. Hillbilly Jim as the special guest referee is a nice touch, though modern fans will definitely get more amusement from watching Triple H take part in something like this. The casket match between Mabel and The Undertaker is kept short and sweet. It’s a serviceable way to end the main event run of the former, whose ascent to the top proved to be one of 1995’s biggest missteps.
If those matches fit right in with the era, there’s also plenty of proof here of the WWF looking toward an edgier future. The homoeroticism of the Goldust character is really beginning to present itself and while there’s obviously a lot problematic with the storyline in a 2019 context, his lusting over Razor Ramon was new ground for the WWF, especially at a time when having gay characters on TV at all was a hot-button topic. The show’s most famous match is the main event between Bret Hart and The British Bulldog. You’d be remiss to expect something similar to their match at Summerslam ’92. It features one hell of a blade job by Bret, which may be the first instance of blood on WWF TV since WrestleMania VIII. Between this spot and him going through a table at the Survivor Series the month previously, Bret ultimately spearheaded quite a bit of the WWF’s edgier programming. It’s all the more ironic that he’d voice his displeasure at the raunchiness of the Attitude Era when he was one of the key figures in its creation.
The cherry on top is the debut of the WWF’s newest character, Xanta Klaus. Yes, that’s right: St. Nick turns heel on this show. Needless to say, the character didn’t last long, but it goes right along with a show that’s already so weird and off-kilter. And perhaps an even better thing is that this show’s runtime is just under two hours. It’s a fun, brisk watch and goes down like a smooth shot of peppermint Schnapps. It’s the right show for the holiday season, and everything a B-level pay-per-view should be.
My Random Notes
The In Your House theme is kind of a bop, no? I have a thing for pay-per-view themes that sound like the last thing you’d associate with wrestling and it really fits the bill. It’s got that blues sound you could only get in the ‘90s.
Triple H gets a gnarly cut on his back from the metal gate of the hog pen and once it gets mixed in with the mud, you have something that really makes my stomach turn.
Speaking of HHH, surely there’s gotta be more than one person out there who can say they chatted with him on the WWF Superstar hotline while he was covered in pig shit. If you’re out there, please report your experience here!
Given how old dark matches are popping up out of the WWE video archives all the time now, I hope one day we can see the absurdity of Barry Horowitz, Hakushi, and The Smoking Gunns defeating Yokozuna, Issac Yankem, and The Bodydonnas in eight-man tag action. The In Your House dark matches were pretty weird on paper, in general.
So, Double J’s return here: what was up with that? He walked out at the height of his push in the summer of ’95 and then showed back up because he felt like it, I guess? And then he left again a month later because he also felt like it? I don’t think I’ve ever gotten the full story there.
I mentioned the Jarrett/Ahmed segment being a huge mess, and I stand by that, but the transition into the Ahmed/Landell match is way worse. I actually had to Google the name of the ring announcer (it’s Manny Garcia). He completely ruins the surprise by announcing Landell before he’s even revealed as Dean Douglas’ surprise replacement. With that said, I do appreciate the effort WWF made in time traveling 10 years in the past to steal Buddy Landell from the NWA. The Monday Night Wars were crazy like that.
Ah, yes, an entire VHS dedicated to cheat codes for WrestleMania: The Arcade Game. I’ll be sure to pop that in the ole VCR after I watch Jennifer Anniston and Matthew Perry teach me how to use Windows ’95.
It’s practically public knowledge by now, but Diesel in the last six months of his WWF run is absolutely who he should’ve been for the entirety of his world title run. I really hate to throw the ole “shades of gray” line out there, but Diesel’s character here was ahead of the game in terms of being the type of tweener that would be in abundance on the roster during the Attitude Era.

My WWE SuperShowdown 2018 Review
The Card:
Universal Title Match - Seth Rollins vs Baron Corbin
I honest don’t care about either one. Seth is overrated and Baron is cool character, but a boring guy irl. I was waiting for Brock to come the whole time that they FLUFFED the cash in?! No thank you. Next!
4/10
Intercontinental Title Match - Finn Balor vs Andrade
Again, I DON’T CARE ABOUT THESE TWO!!! The demon is cool, but Finn Balor (Fergal Devitt) isn’t! Also he was very disrespectful to the gracious country of Agraba before this wondrous event. This was a boring match with two overrated wrestlers. What have they even done to deserve to be here? Andrade needs to learn English and stop doing the stupid KNEES thing. So stupid. I don’t even know what Andrade’s skillset is because he shows no talent. This match is something the we could have seen on SmackDown Live any other night. No, I say! No!
3/10
Roman Reigns vs Shane McMahon (& Drew McIntyre)
I couldn’t wait for Roman’s ass to be handed to him. I didn’t like the energy they let Reigns have, but in the end Drew did what we all were wanting; he kicked Roman with the Claymore while the referee was distracted. Well done.
8/10
Lars Sullivan vs Lucha House Party
Lars should have squashed these clowns. The match itself was confusing. I don’t understand what happened, but at least Lars stayed looking strong and got the victory. Go, Lars, go!
8/10
Randy Orton vs Triple H
This was a battle between two living legends in their near primes. Neither seemed to have lost a step. The Viper vs the Cerebral Assassin was my personal favorite match tonight. Nothing could top this match for me. No words needed. More of this, please!
10/10
Bobby Lashley vs Braun Strowman
This was a sensational match. An animal in Bobby Lashley with a great physique and the future face of WWE in Braun Strowman. Great job by both guys. Another gem from this event.
9/10
WWE Title Match - Kofi vs Dolph Ziggler
When life hands Dolph Ziggler lemons, he makes lemonade. He also looked great. Dolph has carried this feud. He did great work tonight throughout the match. Kofi did very little in the wrestling department, as usual. Xavier Woods was Kofi’s crony and they cheated to have Dolph lose. Stupid and unoriginal, but predictable. Dolph continues saving this feud as he put on an expertly executed promo to get a rematch. Ziggler is such a great HEEL. Hopefully they will do his great work justice and Dolph wins the title from this clown Kofi and his posse.
8/10
Battle Royal
This was an even bigger battle royale, if you can believe that. It was very cool that a local guy won. The crowd was electric the entire event, but when he won the surge turned into a sonic boom. Very cool. I cannot wait to see him every week from now on.
7/10
Main Event - Goldberg vs The Undertaker
The legend Undertaker fought this old guy from WCW. The old guy couldn’t even pick up ‘Taker. So the Undertaker carried this match and put the bleeding old man down. Great to see the legend Undertaker in the ring again. I hope he shows up at SummerSlam and WreslteMania. I can’t get enough of watching his matches. Triple H vs Undertaker again anyone? Just more Undertaker matches!
9/10
Final thoughts:
As per usual with WWE, the production was immaculate, the matches were well thought out, and the crowd was electric. For an event that had 0 women wrestling (I think Saudi has a law that prevents women from physically or figuratively touching other women under any circumstances), this was near perfect. I hope that piss-ant company took notes because this is how you do an event. WWE Super Showdown 2019 felt like those epic WrestleManias and had moments no wrestling fan will ever forget. I loved the whole experience! I can’t wait for another two!
9/10 overall

Arena Mexico New Values Report! 08/14/2018
Nitro, Hijo del Signo & Espíritu Negro vs. Star Jr., Stigma & Pegasso
Who’s who?
Nitro with his fuzzy mohawk, Signo maskless, Negro in black with crosses on the legs of his pants.
Star Jr. in gold mask, Pegasso in all red and Stigma in red/dark blue.
How’s the match?
Good, Star Jr. is pretty much always fun to watch. I just mentioned in the last Puebla review that I’d like to see Stigma in Arena Mexico more often. So I was glad to see him here. While I like the tecnicos, the rudos are sorta midcard fodder. Espiritu returned from months of being inactive, so maybe he could get into a serious program with someone. I wouldn’t hold my breath, but it doesn’t seem as impossible as Signo or Nitro suddenly being taken more seriously.
Misterioso, Sagrado & Universo 2000 Jr. vs. Triton, Audaz, & Black Panther
Who’s who?
Misterioso in green, Sagrado in black with a thick white cross on his mask and Universo 2000 Jr. is in white/black.
Triton in white, Audaz in gold and Black Panther in black.
How’s the match?
Very good, Triton and Audaz are two of the most nimble guys on the roster. I’m also an unabashed fan of everything Panther dynasty, which obviously includes Black Panther. I think of the three, Triton was the most impressive in this match. The other tecnicos did a good job too. While I think the rudos here have a similar issue to the 3 rudos in the previous match, that being : None of them are going to be doing anything BIG anytime soon. I feel these three have more personality and don’t seem as 1 note. Also, Universo 2000 Jr. does have a big story on the horizon which is joining NGD. Who knows if that will be in 2018 or 2019 or even 2020. As NGD as a three man unit has been doing fine without him at their side. Still... it seems like a question of when, not if. This match is worth checking out for certain.
Soberano Jr., Titan, & Blue Panther vs. Mephisto, Ephesto & Luciferno
Who’s who?
Soberano in blue pants masked, Titan in a silver mask blue briefs and Blue Panther the only maskless guy in the contest.
Mephisto in white mask, Ephesto in red, and Luciferno in black/white pants with a shirt that has his name on it.
How’s the match?
Good, Soberano Jr. and Titan are both great young luchadors. Blue Panther too of course is a nostalgic favorite and has more personality than just about anyone else on the roster. This match is kept from being very good in my opinion because it goes 2-0 when someone throws away the 2nd round and the match.  That makes this a bit shorter than it needed to be. Making it feel truncated, but that in turn might lead to a better match next week. Not a bad match by any measure, but not long enough to get a very good or great from me.
Hechicero (c) vs. Stuka Jr. for the NWA World Historic Light Heavyweight Championship
Who’s who?
Hechicero in black and Stuka Jr. in blue.
Hechicero is coming into this match as champion and is his 7th defense having won the belt from Rey Bucanero on the 1st of November 2016.
How’s the match?
Fantastic! These two had a great chemistry and this match surpassed the last title challenge Stuka Jr. had vs Ultimo Guerrero a month or two ago. This match had the spots you’d expect from both these men, but with some variation that makes the match more exciting. With Stuka Jr. taking aim at Hechicero on the ramp and the deadly full body submission of Hechicero getting set up uniquely here. This match will likely go down as the best match this week from CMLL, but honestly might be the best match of the week regardless of promotion. No offense to all the great matches planned for Super Friday, Lost in New York, Summerslam and Takeover. If you call yourself a wrestling fan... do yourself a favor and take the 30 minutes out of your day to watch this barnburner. I won’t spoil it for anyone reading this who had yet to check it out.
Niebla Roja, Angel de Oro & Kraneo vs. NGD(Sanson, Cuatrero, & Forastero)
Who’s who?
Roja in red, Oro in gold and Kraneo in the bodysuit/mask.
NGD are all in black/white.
Forastero has gold trim and bandolier on his tights, Cuatrero has horseshoes and Sanson has a lion on his forehead.
How’s the match?
Good, this match isn’t anything new though. If you’d seen any of the other countless matches that include Oro/Roja/NGD. Kraneo gives a nice dynamic and it’s still plenty of fun. It just feels fairly inconsequential, which is only further highlighted after a title match that has something on the line.  NGD dominate over the tecnico team as always. I’d call this better than Monday’s main event, but just by a slight margin. Helped a great deal by the fact that Oro/Roja can hold their own better than the older Octagon/Atlantis pairing. Though Taven on Monday was probably the best highlight from both matches.

A Letter To My 3 Year Old Son
Originally posted on August 14 2019
Ror!
It’s been a crazy year. Our family grew from 3 to 4, and you couldn’t have taken it more in your stride. It was always a worry that having another baby would maybe cause jealousy or you would feel replaced. That was never the case in reality though. The first time you met Ace (after ignoring him for the first 15 minutes) was to give him a big hug. You showed incredible maturity and in your own bossy and commanding way - you have become pretty much a third parent! In the first few months of having Ace, whenever you heard him cry you would come straight to us, and if we couldn’t get there immediately - you would go to him and try and settle him. You share food with him, you always make sure you know where he is, and you always show love and protection for him. You are already exceeding at being a big brother. Although you are still not too hot on sharing your Spider-man figure with him, but let's not forget you are three years old!
Moving on from your fantastic job as a big brother, I want to talk about how much you have grown in the last 12 months. We had worries about your speech, but its come on SO much. All of a sudden you are hitting us with sentences, colours and numbers. You call me “Dai” (because you struggle to pronounce daddy) and everyone finds it hilarious. You’ve also continued to be really confident and outgoing. You love going for walks and adventuring to new places. Oh, and we also potty trained you! Well, it was less training and more “I am Rory and i’m bored of nappies now”. You only had a day or two of accidents, and then that was it!
Moving onto the things you enjoy. Your obsessions right now are Spider-Man, Iron Man and Captain America. Firemen. Paw Patrol (still). And my favourite thing that you love - your bamp! Any chance to see Bamp is the best part of your week - you copy him and follow him around like a shadow. He has taught you how to garden and is always trying to teach you how to ride a bike. You guys have an amazing bond. You have amassed a great collection of superhero action figures lately, and you love lining them up and taking pictures of them. Oh and let's not forget how much you love wrestling with me! Cutting promos on me with the microphone and you lock a great arm-bar!
You are currently sat with me on the sofa, its 21:30. You have your headphones on and watching Ryans Toy Review on YouTube. I am watching Summerslam and writing this! Here is to another year of learning who you are and I know you will continue to be the absolute best little man around. I love you! Dad (dai)

WWE Monday Night Raw 8/5/19
We started the night with a tribute to those in El Paso and Dayton. They even gave a ten bell salute. It was good. Nice of them.
Then they showed the theme song, and Samoa Joe interrupted it. He hopped up on the announce desk and yelled at Michael Cole for accusing him of attacking Roman Reigns. Graves tried to defend Cole, which only made Joe more mad. He demanded that they show the footage. They did, and Joe said that since he was nowhere near the attack. Joe vowed to stay at the show until Reigns showed up, so he could get his apology.
As he was talking, Becky Lynch interrupted and walked down to the ring. Badass. I love her.
Grade: B-. I am almost positive that it wasn’t Joe who attacked Roman, so this is just sorta a red haring. But it could lead to a nice brawl and maybe even a good match if I may be so bold.
Then we had a tag match in the Women’s division. Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch vs. Natalya and Trish Stratus. I was shocked that they are actually having Stratus on TV. Charlotte vs. Stratus is one of the biggest matches that they have going for them, so I was surprised to see this tag match get booked. Nattie and Lynch started the match with some technical exchanges. The two exchangd some submissiions, and Lynch was bout to lock in the disarmer, but Charlotte tagged herself in. Charlotte essentially wrestled this match alone, she completely refused to tag Lynch in. Even when she actually did tag Lynch in, she nailed Lynch in the back of the head with a forearm and walked out on her. Nattie locked in the sharpshooter, and refused to break when Lynch made it to the ropes, causing a DQ.
After the match, Stratus tried to pull Nattie off of Lynch, so Nattie pushed her away.
Grade: C+. Fine match, basically continued to show how much hatred has festered between Nattie and Lynch. And it showed that Charlotte is a bad guy. Stratus didn’t actually wrestle, so that was good. Just a perfectly functional angle here.
Then we went into Andrade vs. Rey Mysterio, the never ending feud. The match stemmed from Andrade ripping Mysterio’s mask after their portion of the Gauntlet match last week. We started with a quick pace, getting into striking and flipping within the first minute. At one point early on, Andrade spilled to the outside, so Rey slid out onto him and gave him a sunset flip powerbomb into the barricade. The two put on a really nice, lucha libre style of match with lots of great flippy moves. Rey hit an awesome hurricanrana after Andrade popped him up at one point. Andrade also nailed a beautiful double stomp in the corner after the two battled on the top rope. Rey still fought back however, this time with a mexican destroyer for a near fall. Then he nailed Andrade with the 619, but Andrade got his knees up for the splash after Vega distracted Mysterio. In the finish, Andrade went for the mask once again, but when the ref pulled him off, Vega hung up Mysterio on the middle rope, allowing Andrade to hit the hammerlock DDT.
Grade: B+. Just a nice little spotfest here. Pretty fun, and open to have a rematch. Nice to see a pretty good match.
Then we saw went is going on with Maria Kanellis, at their OBGYN appointment. She told Mike to defend her and her championship, and he said he would. At the appointment, Mike told Maria to relax and hugged her. The doctor then counted a pinfall, so Kanellis won the championship. Mike ran out into the waiting room, where R-Truth was waiting, He threw a baby doll in the air, which Mike caught, and then rolled up Mike to win his title back.
Then we had an interview with Becky Lynch about her summerslam match. Lynch said that she doesn’t care if Nattie has hometown advantage. She will win, because she has changed the business. Nattie said that she hasn’t gotten enough opportunity, but Lynch said that she needed to take opportunities. She is what Nattie’s career needs. Then Nattie was interviewed, and she said that her armbar didn’t matter, because her arm will break before she taps. Then she said that she would end Becky’s career with the sharpshooter and win the championship. Nice, I like tough Nattie.
Then Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman came out. Heyman ran down Rollins for getting destroyed by Lesnar again and again. He said that he loses too much, and he isn’t the hero that he pretends to be. They showed the attack from last week, and Heyman talked about how even he couldn’t stop Lesnar’s vicious attack. He also said that Rollins was in the building, and he insulted him for being stupid and showing up to Raw. Rollin’s music hit, and he limped down to the ring with a hair in hand. When Rollins got into the ring, Lesnar went right for the ribs. Lesnar attacked him with the chair and threw him all over the ring. Lesnar nailed him with an F5 to leave him laying on the ground.
After a commercial break, Rollins got on the mic and talked about why this match was worth it. He said that he wanted to protect the Universal Championship, despite the fact that it gets him beaten up every week. He said that this was all he had, and he vowed to beat Lesnar. He also refused to get on the stretcher when they offered it.
Grade: C-. I am not as fond of this underdog story as I was of a confident Rollins going into Wrestlemania. He is badass when he is confident, and while he is a good underdog, Lesnar eats underdogs. We’ve seen this story before, and while I hope Rollins wins, it seems like he won’t. I’m just sick of Lesnar being in the title picture.
Backstage, Kurt Angle, who would be a special guest referee for McIntyre vs. Alexander, talking to the Street Profits. They wanted to party with him and drink some milk, which they almost did until Drew McIntyre came up and threatened him. If Angle didn’t call it down the middle, then he would crack his skull open. I don’t know why Kurt Angle is here.
Then we had a squash match with the Viking Raiders. They won with the viking experience.
Grade: B-. Inoffensive Squash.
Then we had Cedric Alexander vs. Drew McIntyre, with Kurt Angle as the guest referee. McIntyre ran down to the ring as Alexander entered, and he beat the crap out of him. As they fought on the outside, Alexander gave McIntyre a tornado DDT, and then the lights went out. The Fiend showed up once again, and used the mandible claw to put Angle right on the mat.
Grade: B-. Okay, I’m into this becoming Wyatt’s new thing. A modern legend slayer, but he is way creepier. I like that, he looks really strong so far.
Then we had the New Day’s Xavier Woods and Big E come out to the ring for a match with the OC. The match didn’t even really start when AJ just ran into the ring and attacked. There was a DQ, and the New Day were beaten down, but Ricochet ran down and came to their aid. He helped fight them off, and they turned this into a 6-man tag. Ricochet and Styles mixed it up a bit. Big E was tagged in to fight a bit against Luke Gallows, who came out in his old face paint, so that was cool. Styles and Big E actually had a really good exchange here, where Styles countered several of Big E’s power move. He eventually gave Woods the hot tag, who gave Styles an honor roll. That was when this broke down a bit into anarchy, as Ricochet gave Styles a dropkick through the bottom ropes and out to the outside, but Gallows caught him when he tried again, and he was sent flying into the barricade. Styles then took out Big E with a Phenomenal Forearm, while Gallows and Anderson hit the Magic Killer for the win.
Grade: B. Pretty good stuff, interesting that the OC got the win over the Smackdown tag team champions, so maybe they will be the WWE Tag Team Champions soon. Other than that, just sorta a spot fest. Still pretty good though.
Then Samoa Joe came out, upon finding out that Roman Reigns was in the building. Reigns didn’t come out, so Joe sat in the right and waited. The crowd got bored waiting for Reigns and chanted CM Punk, so Joe walked out and met Reigns in the parking lot. As Joe walked out to confront him, a car smashed into Romans. Joe actually made sure that Reigns was okay after the car was hit, telling him to stay down and yelling for a medic. Triple H came out to make sure he was okay as well. Interesting, no confirmation of who it was. And Joe may turn face.
Then we had a fatal 4-way elimination match for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships. The Kabuki Warriors vs. Fire and Desire vs. Nikki Cross and Alexa Bliss vs. The IIconics. This match feels like they were going to do it at summerslam, but then they just kept cutting the build until they didn’t have a build, so they just blew it off on TV. Also, Corey and Renee are really funny during this match because he keeps yelling at her whenever Mandy Rose was in the ring. The IIconics took everyone down and hit their signature poses, but then Rose ran in to fight them. Rose pinned Cay with a running knee very quick, guaranteeing new champions. Nikki Cross was in after the elimination, but she quickly tagged herself out to Asuka. Asuka intimidated Rose out of the ring to tag in Bliss, but Bliss quickly tagged Sonya Deville. The two had a very nice exchange, followed by an awesome hot tag from the Kabuki warriors. Bliss entered the ring again, and when Renee mentioned that Bliss didn’t want to be in the match because she was scared, Graves suggested that she could be scared of getting scurvy from Kairi Sane. You know, because she is a pirate. So dumb, but pretty funny. Then we saw Rose and Asuka battling a bit, culminating in Rose tapping out to the Asuka lock. That left the Kabuki Warriors and Cross and Bliss. When we came back, Cross was locked in a knee bar, but she eventually broke out. And afterwards, she continued to sell the knee, so that was nice. Sane had a yet another really nice hot tag, which reminded me that she never really had a chance to prove herself on the main roster yet. Asuka then tagged back in to fight Bliss, and nearly got stacked up out of an Asuka lock. Sane went up for the insane elbow, but Cross pushed her off the top rope. Asuka then tried to attack Cross on the outside, but Cross trapped her in the apron and beat her down. Sane then took out Cross, only to be floored by a right from Bliss. Bliss then went up and hit Twisted Bliss for the win.
Grade: C+. A lot of this match was awkward, and not the greatest. But that last fall between Bliss and the Kabuki warriors was pretty good. I hope to see more straight up tag matches between some teams, and hopefully put some respect on those championships. I think Cross and Bliss have the most star power in this
And in the main event slot, we had a contract signing on Miz TV. Miz and Dolph Ziggler were going to sign a contract for their match, and Shawn Michaels was there for some reason too. Ziggler quickly insulted both of Michaels and Miz, saying that he is carrying the company on his back since Michaels lost his smile, and Miz lost his balls. Funny, those certainly didn’t happen at the same time. Miz then said the contract was not for a match with Miz, implying it was with Shawn Michaels. Michaels then said that it wasn’t him, and Goldberg came out. Goldberg then signed the contract after Ziggler retreated from the ring. Goldberg then told Ziggler that he was next, as Michaels drilled him with a superkick.
Grade: B. I bumped this up a bit because of the surprise. Goldberg is certainly a way to get a bigger name on this card, and I’m into it. Ziggler can sell a beating like no other, so I’m excited to see him get speared inside out on Sunday.
Overall Grade: B-.
Pros: Andrade vs. Mysterio; OC vs. New Day & Ricochet; Miz TV; IIconics lost their belts :)
Cons: Rollins looks super weak
