Could you spill the tea on changeling lore? I think I’ve settled on Mal being a changeling but I always like to hear your take on stuff like this
Yay changelings!!! More reasons for me to love Mal.
In changeling mythos there are two main types of changeling.
The first is the obvious fae baby, the one that gets switched with the human baby in the middle of the night. Sometimes it's because the fae want a human baby to raise as a servant, sometimes it's for the love of a human child, sometimes for a meal. The fae baby is usually identified by intelligence beyond their years, uncanny insight, and playing alone. Their eyes are wide and watchful, perceptive of the world around them in a way other children aren't.
Fae children usually fall into two categories themselves: the internal and the external. Internal children are more introverted, consumed by their hobbies and interests; they don't talk much and don't like eye contact. External children are more extroverted, they're louder and more active in their hobbies and interests, more social and talkative than their internal siblings. The autism and adhd fae babies.
Now there are myths where human children are switched with elderly fae made to look like babies. These elderly fae can then live out their lives being doted on and loved by their human "parents".
The second type of changeling is the log changeling. Log changelings are usually meant to wither and die in the place of the human that was stolen. Often logs are brought to life in order to act as a stand in while a human adult is kidnapped to become a fae's lover. (I think Gaz has left behind quite a few logs in place of the Darlings he steals away.) There are myths of logs replacing babies though! These are changelings that might be given to humans who want to walk home with a baby today, or switched out when a fae baby isn't available.
Log children are very low energy, more sickly children. They're melancholic, only happy when they're out in nature. Unlike the internal fae children they don't have the same excitement and engagement in their hobbies. They are quiet and contemplative. It's not in the myths but I like to think that these are the artists and writers of the changelings.
I think changelings grow up within human society and have a profound understanding that they're different. There's magic that buzzes right at the edge of their perception. They see the wild, they see the fae that walk the streets for what they are, they smell the change in the seasons. There is a world that they can perceive and are part of, but don't know the rules for.
Many fae children grow up and join their fae brethren. The ones that leave home may not return, the ones that do are different (and yet the same) when they see their human parents again. Their magic may be a little more volatile, having learned it late in life, and they don't have the taste for tethers or meat that their cousins do, but they fae recognize their own.
In my mind changelings have a lot of trouble accessing a more monstrous form, they've been raised human, there's no reason for them to have wings and fangs. They can of course, with enough time in the wild or with enough training, but they won't get to König's end of the spectrum.

Arcadia is beautiful in the springtime now that it is restored. The little ones love playing in the park.
It is so nice seeing them happy and having fun; Eleanor spending time with them, too.
I mainly sit on the bench with Auggie and Ms. Grace to watch them have fun. But I do go have fun with them! They love climbing all over me, it's funny.

ANNETTE — “Hi, ace detective.” The young girl stifles a yawn. “We’ll be closing up soon, I’m afraid. Is there anything I can help you find?”
EMPATHY — She’s hoping the answer is yes. Any excuse to take a break from the dreaded *math homework.*
“No thanks, I was just on my way out.” [Leave]
“It’s okay, I don’t want to distract you from your studies.”
“Yeah, actually. I’m looking for a book.”
ANNETTE — She tries and fails to hide her relief as she sets her textbook under her chair. “Of course! What are you looking for, sir?”
“A happy story.”
“A sad story.”
“Something that will make me a better detective.”
“Something that will make me a better person.”
“Something about how to mend a broken heart.”
ANNETTE — “Oh…” She frowns, staring up at the shelves as if hoping that the perfect book will miraculously catch her eye. “Umm… Let me think…”
EMPATHY — She’s genuinely trying to think of one. She wants to help you.
ANNETTE — After a long, long pause, Annette finally lets out a sigh of defeat. “…I’m not sure,” she admits sadly. “I’m sorry, sir.”
YOU — “You can’t think of anything at all?”
ANNETTE — “Well… We do carry some self help books, sir, but…” She casts a quick glance around the store.
REACTION SPEED — Making sure Plaisance is out of earshot.
ANNETTE — The girl leans in conspiratorially and whispers, “Mother says those books are all snake oil. ‘If all it took to change somebody’s life was a book, *we* would be sitting quite prettily.’”
DRAMA — Her Plaisance impression is uncanny! What talent!
YOU — “Why do you sell them, then?”
ANNETTE — “Well,” she coughs, “not everyone agrees with my mother.”
RHETORIC — Translation: because people buy them. It’s as simple as that.
ANNETTE — “But I don’t think that’s quite what you’re looking for, is it, sir…?” She looks up at you with that seemingly impossible mixture of innocence and knowing that is unique to children.
“Yeah, you’re right. It isn’t.”
“No, I think I’ll give the self help books a try.”
“I’m not really sure what I’m looking for, to be honest.”
ANNETTE — She nods slowly, looking down at her frayed nails. “Lots of people come into the shop not quite knowing what they’re looking for. But that’s what’s so nice about bookshops, don’t you think? No matter where you look, you can find *something* interesting.” She smiles bright enough to light up every dark corner of the bookstore and the doomed commercial area below it. “I’m sure you’ll find what you’re looking for, ace detective. Maybe you just have to let it find *you.*”
+1 MORALE
VOLITION — Here in this bookshop. In Martinaise. Revachol. The world. This seemingly wretched lifetime. In the midst of it all, there is always something for you. Uncurl your fist. Let it find your palms upturned.

you know i must have been bone-tired when this part of the herb brides lore didn't come to my mind when i discussed how the Kin fundamentally differs from the cultures it is inspired by um There Is The Human Sacrifice part. like it's an important part of pathologic 2 that you are doing human, or anthropomorphic (if you want to see the Herb Brides as closer to spirits, which comes with its own set of problematics regarding how to approach their oppression) sacrifice. it's an important part of pathologic 2 that you kill a woman, as part of the journey and in direct resonance with you ritualistically killing cattle earlier, and she offers herself to you with cultural and religious significance.
human sacrifices have been done across the globe for millennia, but i cannot, for the life of me, find any source at all that mentions the Buryats (since that was the discussion point) partaking in human sacrifices by the turn of the 19th-early 20th century (or even anything past the 16th). every single source mentioning offerings and sacrifices i've read mentions animals, things such as milk and vodka, and often both at once. would love to read anything about these rituals if papers exist, but i'm personally drawing a blank.
the Kin has Obvious and very Visible influences but it also differs from specific (in this discussion's case, the Buryats) or wider (here, turkic/mongolic as a whole) cultures from the area by so many pieces, big and small, that i wouldn't have enough appendages on my whole body to count them all. and sister. i have plenty of appendages.

I've been thinking how everyone has a personal quest, except you as a PC ofc, and for that reason... what would be Nat's personal quest.
Already established she's been constantly on the run for deserting Lolth's cult in Menzoberranzan, so it'd definitely be tied to that. I like to think that for the past 70 years, she's always been captured here and there but always managed to escape.
She's not under constant attack, there's a lot to do in actual service, but to turn your back on the Spider Queen is a great as sin as ever, one Nat's previously High Priestess would like to see properly punished, with a great deal of pain involved.
I haven't decided many specifics yet, but my general outline is that during Act 2, due to close proximity to a convenient Underdark entrance, Nat gets snatched up somehow and has to be freed. Between her companions realizing she's gone and actually finding her, her captors have flooded her system with poison that only an expert can get rid of.
And that's how it "bleeds" to Act 3, where either Araj Oblodra helps after some of her bizarre bargains, or the treatment has to be found lost somewhere in the Sorcerous Sundries. Meanwhile, Nat's in under constant but somewhat manageable pain and has her combat abilities (which are not that exquisite, she's a thief after all and not a fighter) severely hindered.

I suppose this counts as a kinfession. I just wanted to state how sometimes it gets really frustrating to see sentients who are kin with a not binary character that uses they/them (see Kris from Deltarune) and them then using he/him. I get that it is their own memories and literally them, but I suppose after a while it feels like some sort of erasure to me? I hope that makes sense, and if anybody could explain more to make me more comfortable with this specific thing, that would be lovely as well. I always want to keep an open mind.

How come you decided to make Hollylark and Sparkpelt mates?
I know they’re not related in this au but they are in canon
The most important reason is that because Sparkpelt is not related to Firestar in this rewrite (Bramble x Jessie), it would have borked ASC when it finally comes because Nightheart wouldn't be Firekin.
So I went to grab a Fire-descendant, but I'd already squished the plothole that half of the Clan is directly descended from Firestar by trading many of Lionblaze's children (Spotfur, Sorrelstripe, Fernsong) to other litters. So Hollytuft was the most obvious choice here
Especially since they just never did anything with her name and legacy. It's weird that Nightheart is having this arc about being reminded of someone he never met, while canon Hollytuft is casually sitting in the background. I think it makes more sense that his other mother was dealing with similar feelings before she died.
So at this point, I was ready to wrap up, but then I realized it wasn't obvious that something large had changed here. So I decided to combine Hollytuft's name with Larksong's, to make it clearer that this is a combination character taking the canonical role of Spark's mate. That's how we got to Hollylark.
And even if I wanted to just use Larksong, I already nipped that one by pruning Lilyheart's kids AND her mate. There's no Snowbush, Leafshade, or Honeyfur anymore, so there's not much space for Canon Larksong either.

[🚨 SPOILERS FOR S2 EP 8 of Kin 🚨]
That’s a very good - and very disturbing - question.💀
What exactly did Michael mean when he told Jimmy that “[Bren] didn’t come after you like he did with me and Jenny” in explanation for why Jimmy hadn’t known his father was a pedophile his entire life but Michael himself had “always” known it???
I mean, the statement’s still somewhat ambiguous enough that I could argue it either way (that Michael was sexually abused in a similar manner to his sister, which is a hell of a lot like what the wording of it suggests - OR - that Bren did target Michael in a way he hadn’t done with Jimmy but limited his abuses to the mental and physical).
A disturbing matter to contemplate and now it’s going to bug me, because knowing Kin, there’s a very good chance we’ll never get a clear answer to the question and will instead be left to decide for ourselves.😬
So what, if anything, does anyone make of this?
