Probably going to start questioning hyena again. I first (at least knowingly) have had hyena shifts since I was 14 and I have continued to have these shifts on and off for years now. However, it's really difficult for me to tell if this is a theriotype, heart-type, copinglink, or something else. I'm a lioness so it feels a bit contradicting, although I know that's not really important. The main issue is the line between identifying as or with hyenas is unclear. For some of my kintypes it's very easy to figure out, I just know I am that creature, and then for others the questioning process is so long and difficult and I don't know why. It's very frustrating and it's why I put off continuing to question hyenas for so long. The fact I've doubted hyena for all these years makes me wonder if that's a sign I'm not one, but I don't know. I feel very euphoric when I have hyena shifts and something about it feels correct, at least I think so. I have tried labelling it as a heart-type and copinglink but something about those labels made me feel like there was something missing...like it might be something more.
If I'm a hyena I'm almost for sure I'm a spotted hyena but I'll consider striped hyenas too as I have shifts of both. I guess all I can do is keep researching and taking notes, and hopefully figure out if hyena is a theriotype eventually.

what if endless pack ice and weeks were  the sun never rises and chasing penguins through the water and watching wandering albatross from the sea and swimming through the kelp forests of south georgia island
but what if sprinting across the pack ice and pulling a dog sled and herding reindeer and curling up with your team mates and human to sleep
but what if using echolocation to navigate the night sky and crawling, spider like, towards your next host and hanging upside down with your colony
but what if making tools and flying next to cars and neon signs and loud music you feel in your chest and cawing with your murder above the house the humans think is haunted
but what if endless plains and sky and following lions in hopes of food and running beneath the moon and feeling the wind in your fur and laughing with your clan

Hello, could I please have some therian tips for a striped hyena kin? Apologies if you need more detail than that for the request, as I've not seen one of these done before
Okie! What I was planning to do for tips was just some stuff like decor, clothes, activities and gear n stuff so I hope you can find something useful that might help you connect with your theriotype :3
Decor:
Hyenas live in quite a few habitats but mainly savannas, grasslands, woodlands, forest edges, etc. Depending on what you may feel connected to I would get some decor related to that, such as; you could just get some different plants that matched your habitat, and this one might not be available cuz heating can be expensive but keeping your house nice and warm :3 also making little forts can be super fun! Like a den, in the back of my closet I have some small lights and a bunch of blankets and I gotta crawl over stuff to get in there and it feels nice and private and cozy. Or even if you could get like a heated blanket in there and nuzzel on top of it, that might be rrly fun!
Clothes/Gear:
Wearing striped clothes in black/brown and just kinda earthy tones might be nice, I've also found quite a few hyena ear handbands. I haven't found too many hyena tails, but you could always make your own! Fursuit tails can get a little pricy,, so yarn tails could be a cheaper option.
Activities:
Do some quadrobics, I know that's a simple one but if your able to they can be super fun. I would also suggest practicing some vocals, maybe watch videos on them or a documentary and try and mimic there sounds. Hyenas are very smart, maybe challenge yourself with some puzzles or riddles!
Food:
Definitely meat(if you not vegan/vegetarian), but definitely don't make that your whole diet. Okay well I know some people do but um.. in my option I think you need a bit of everything😭 lol. Hyenas do eat a lot of everything tho, like I've read they eat eggs so again(if your not vegan) those might be nice to have a bit more of.

Spooky Species: Hyena
I know, I know. Hyenas get a bad rap. And, sure, some of it is earned fairly, what with their scavenger diet and iconic cackle, but honestly? Hyenas are pretty cool.
Tumblr media
First off, despite their distinctly doglike appearance, hyenas aren’t even close to being dogs. The order Carnivora, containing most predatory mammals, is divided into two groups- Caniform, or dog-like, predators like wolves, bears, and foxes, and Feliform- catlike- predators like big cats and viverrids. Hyenas are solidly in the latter group, most closely related to mongooses.
Tumblr media
Because why not.
There are four extant species of hyena- brown, striped, spotted, and the aardwolf. I won’t be talking about the aardwolf here because it’s the rebel of the family and barely anything that applies to the other three species applies to it. Maybe another time.
Hyenas are highly specialized for consuming coarse food and crushing bones, with powerful jaws and canine teeth that sit further back in their mouth than most animals in order to rest at the point of peak pressure for their jaws. They have been noted to have much more durable jaws in this area than canids, as they break bones with their canine teeth as opposed to their back teeth the way most canines do. All hyenas also possess a rough, catlike tongue, which they use both to scrape meat off of bone and to groom themselves.
Tumblr media
And yes, while I couldn’t find a photo, they do do the leg thing just like cats.
Hyenas’ main competitors are lions and wild dogs. The striped hyena in particular is a scavenger, and though spotted hyenas are much more willing to hunt their own food, chasing down medium-sized ungulates and dismembering them in a similar manner to canine predators with up to a 74% success rate- one of the highest of any predator and beat out only by African wild dogs- that doesn’t mean they won’t take advantage of other animals’ kills. Despite a reputation for being cowardly, hyenas frequently drive off larger predators, including lions, to steal their food. And while striped and brown hyenas will play dead if threatened, spotted hyenas will fight back and defend itself ferociously.
Tumblr media
This is the face of a lion that has made a Mistake.
While all hyenas are known to gather together at kills and may live in family groups, spotted hyenas are the only ones that live a highly social lifestyle, living in clans of as many as eighty individuals. Clans are extremely matriarchal, with even the lowest-ranking female being dominant over the highest male. Hyenas also believe in nepotism, with a female’s cubs inheriting the rank directly below her and automatically outranking anyone who is her subordinate (Though this depends largely on the presence of said mother, as lower-ranking individuals may bully higher-ranking juveniles if the mother isn’t around). This is the only way male hyenas can gain any kind of significant rank, though the majority disperse from the clan once they’re about two and a half years old.
Hyena society is fairly compact and unified, operating under a fission-fusion method where clan members seldom remain together and often break off alone in small groups to hunt and forage. Hyenas recognize their relatives, even distant ones, and may show favoritism towards them, with male hyenas often only interacting closely on a social level with their daughters, who show favoritism to their fathers by behaving less aggressively towards them.
Hyena social structure is remarkably complex, often compared to that of primates. Hyenas are conscious that some clanmates may be more reliable than others and recognize third-party kin and rank relationships, and use this knowledge during social decision making. Also like primates, rank is not determined by size or aggression, but by ally networks, acquiring rank by befriending higher-ranking hyenas. Unlike primates, however, rank reversals and overthrows in hyena clans are extremely rare.
Tumblr media
Hyena clans share a single communal den, which is usually located on flat ground with several entrances and exits. These dens are often repurposed burrows made by warthogs, jackals, and springhares that have since been abandoned. Because of their size, most adult hyenas can’t actually enter the full extent of their den, with most tunnels being dug by smaller animals or the cubs themselves, who are remarkably developed and born unusually mobile for a carnivorous mammal, with their eyes already open and a full set of teeth. While a hyena mother usually only produces two or three cubs at a time, many females will share use of a den, meaning it’s not unusual to see twenty or so cubs all gathered at one site.
Spotted hyenas have also consistently demonstrated a high level intelligence, even outperforming chimpanzees on cooperative problem-solving tests and even helping less experienced clanmates solve the problem entirely spontaneously, where chimpanzees required extensive prior training by keepers and struggled to work together.  It has also been noted that hyenas can be incredibly cunning and suspicious, especially after having successfully escaped traps in the past, and they have even been observed apparently taking revenge after a lion killed one of their clanmates.
Tumblr media
Humanity ought to show hyenas a little more love. We might even learn something from them.

Sparkle Serendipity
Tumblr media
Hello hello otherkin community! I wanted to do something fun and celebrate our identities in a fun way! A virtual serendipity if you will. Side note is this otherkin drag? Anyways. I’m sure people are familiar with the term “sparkle dogs” if not i’ll explain: sparkle dogs are a sentient character, with unusual hairstyles and fur colors or patterns, including rainbows. Think bright anime hair, neon stripes, bows and glitters, rainbows, spikes, “emo” or “scene” get ups are also pretty common! if you look up the term you’ll figure out the vibe pretty fast! I would love to see everyone's kin-type sparkled up! So fuckin’ join me! I wanna see! as an explanation for me its pride month and it’s a great time to celebrate my own identity. I’m sure others feel the same. I think this would be nice to see just cause I don’t know the last time I saw something like this for the otherkin community? Were always very serious but god damn it! I wanna see a dragon with anime hair and a tiger with MCR leggings! this also isn’t meant to be something only “pro artists” do. Use photoshop, use ms paint! Draw stick figures!! Go fucking bonkers I wanna see it all and celebrate and be silly for a moment any medium is welcome! please tag with #sparkleserendipity and lets see how the otherkin community rocks the sparkle scene and fuck kffers. I’m not sure about others but there is something beautiful to me about owning something and going “so what dumbasses” which is the inspiration of this, to just let go and have fun amongst ourselves for once. To be happy were otherkin and hey, here’s to more years being non human! I hope this finds everyone in good spirits! go nuts! I’m going to challenge a few of you to join! but again this is meant for everyone to join in and celebrate! I would love to see my feed full of sparkled kin! @dogwithglasses @a-dragons-journal @centuriosenex @aestherians @dinocanid @who-is-page @strawberrybabydog  @kagesystem @hyena-butter

Homebruin - A Gnoll PC Race
Tumblr media
Hullo, Gentle Readers. As you may or may not know, there is a Telegram group I created for discussing D&D, RPGs, DMing, etc. In that group, a popular topic for debate is the treatment of gnolls in D&D 5E. We all generally agree that 5E has done gnolls dirty by making them absolutely unavailable as PCs, devotedly evil, insane, etc. While there are already numerous versions of the gnoll in D&D Beyond’s homebrew section, I’m throwing my own version into the ring in order to marry it to the lore of my campaign. You can, of course, adapt this lore for your own purposes. And if the art looks familiar, you may remember it as the pic Scott Fabianek did for our Monster of the Month article in 2018 on gnolls. Here, then, is the Gnoll Iconoclast.
Although gnolls were originally created from hyenas that ate flesh corrupted by the demon lord Yeenoghu, as they mated, the strain of demon blood lessened.
They began to breed true, and some gnolls found themselves drawn away from the dark practices of their kin. Although many of these iconoclasts were killed by their savage brethren, in at least one area, the new gnolls overthrew and supplanted their darker folk.
Now, they are forming a territory of gnolls where the teachings of Yeenoghu's chosen were utterly rejected, and where the gnolls are now able to find their own paths, often following the ways of the Primal Spirits.
Hardy and Self-Reliant
Gnolls are tall and broadly built by comparison to humans, with females being somewhat larger and stronger than males. Having lost much of the slouch of their demon-tainted forebears, they are, instead, allowed to stand to their full heights of nearly seven foot. They have brown to tan fur colored in various patterns, from spots to stripes, that're passed down as part of their family heritage. They possess powerful jaws filled with sharp teeth, and they are primarily carnivorous. They have a lot of self-confidence in their own abilities, which can sometimes come across as arrogance to others. Because of the reputation of their heritage, others meeting them are often suspicious and hostile, so they know they mostly have to rely on themselves and each other.
From Darkness to Light
The gnoll iconoclasts have utterly rejected the ways of Yeenoghu. One might be violent, or even cruel, but they never intend to become what Yeenoghu made them. Luckily, their demon-tainted kin are easy to tell apart, as their terrible tendencies make it impossible for them to blend in, but they know Yeenoghu desires their corruption or destruction, so they're ever-vigilant against even a whiff of demon-worship among their members. Many now follow the ways of the Primal Spirits, finding that no particular gods seem to have a home for them. The path of the Primal Beast is particularly appealing to them, aiding them in hunting and survival.
Fighting Against Fear
The gnoll iconoclasts are highly aware of the reputation of the rest of their kin. They don't expect acceptance from other races, and, while they would like others to know their true selves, they don't intend to be chained and muzzled to prove who they are. If someone shows an open mind and gives them a chance to prove themselves with being condescending about it, they become loyal friends and allies. Betrayal is met with an immediate breaking of any contact; they will not allow anyone to use them or abuse their trust.
Extended Families
Gnoll society tends to be matriarchal and clannish. A clan is made up of multiple family units, and a gnoll settlement may have several clans. The leading female of each clan meets in a group called the Circle of Sisters, and all tend to defer to the eldest member's wisdom. The Circle meets regularly to discuss important matters that affect the entire community, but they will convene to discuss urgent happenings at a moment's notice. Males are still valued members of a community, often serving as diplomats, crafters, and cunning hunters.
Gnoll Iconoclast Names
Like many races of Tol, Gnoll Iconoclasts use a personal name and a descriptive surname. Unlike many races, members of the same family can have different, descriptive surnames. In time, surnames may become family names, but it hasn't happened yet. Gnolls also have clan names, which they append with the word “ta'”. Thus, a gnoll might be K'Ark Keennose ta'Klagak.
Female Names: Aykeya, Bakata, Brekata, Chekara, Dreeka, Eekt'a, Kreedek, Preetaka, Skatarka, Takeema
Male Names: Aamako, Batoro, Dolaro, K'Ark, Lhoryn, Motaro, Nakoto, Thero, Yamoro, Zollo
Descriptive Names: Blueeyes, Greylock, Keennose, Sharpears, Strongjaw, Swiftpear, Whitepaw
Clan Names: Breedak, Klagak, Kraktok, Pranak, Tovok, Valdak
Gnoll Iconoclast Traits
Your gnoll character has the following racial traits.
Ability Score Increase
Your Strength score increases by 2, and either your Dexterity score or your Constitution score increases by 1.
Age
Gnoll iconoclasts reach full maturity by age 14, and they are considered elderly by 50. They have been known to live 80 years or more.
Alignment
Gnoll iconoclasts tend towards neutral alignments. A touch of the wild means many of them fall to the chaotic side of neutral.
Size
Gnoll iconoclasts average about 7 feet tall. Your size is Medium.
Here’s how to determine your height and weight randomly, starting with rolling a size modifier:
Size modifier = 2d12
Height = 5 feet + 10 inches + your size modifier in inches
Weight in pounds = 180 + (2d6 × your size modifier)
Speed
Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Darkvision
You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Powerful Jaws
Your jaws are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you can deal piercing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.
Rampage
When your character reduces a creature to 0 hit points with a melee attack on its turn, they can take a bonus action to move up to half their speed and make a bite attack.
Self-Reliant
You gain training in the Survival skill.
Wildling Metabolism
You have Advantage on saving throws against disease.
As always, I have created this race in D&D Beyond for your enjoyment. You can find it at https://www.dndbeyond.com/races/705013-gnoll-iconoclast. Until next month, may all your 20s be natural.
