Artist Interview: John Rutsky- Etched in Blue

(John is in the white all the way left)

John Rutsky, one of my first friends here at Rutgers is a talented guitarist for the band Etched in Blue. He is from New Jersey and is one of the kindest, most responsible guys I have ever met. That is why I thought doing an artist interview with him would be really cool; to see where he gets his roots and his current aspirations.

How did you get into music? Is there a specific genre you really enjoy?

“Hi, I’m John Rutsky from the band Etched in Blue currently attending Rutgers Business School. I grew up in a household where there was always music playing from classic rock to pop music. Due to this, I’ve always had a fondness for rock and especially the Beatles.”

How many years have you been playing? How did you find your band mates? How long have you been with this band?

“Funnily enough, my love for singing started in church as a little kid which led me to joining choir in middle school. I kept up with it all through high school and am now a member of the Rutgers Glee Club. I’ve been playing guitar for almost 5 years and did jazz band in high school as well. I have known our drummer since elementary school as well as with our bassist. I met our lead singer through choir who asked me to be a part of the band when their guitarist went away for college. It’s coming up on 3 years I’ve been with the band and my favorite gig is still the first I had with them.”

What is your favorite song by your band? Favorite memory with them? Favorite music memory in general?

“My favorite song that we perform is our original “Hey Mister”. My favorite memory with the band was when we were finally able to get War Pigs by Black Sabbath down so we knew it would be ready for the show. In general, my favorite musical moment was seeing Paul McCartney live.”

What are your goals for the band?

“My goal with the band is firstly to have fun and create music that we enjoy. We want to reach as many people as possible which is why we have music on Spotify and take as many gig opportunities as possible. For instance, on November 18th, we’re playing at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park.”

How can I listen to Etched in Blue?

“You can listen on Spotify! Right now our biggest song on Spotify is “Wrapped Around Your Finger” which is currently sitting at 1.3 million listens.”

I hoped you enjoyed reading this interview, I know I had a lot of fun learning about John. As you can see, he is a pretty successful guy, going to Rutgers, making music and having fun. I cannot wait to see what music he and his band have coming up! Maybe I’ll even go to the Stone Pony to see him, who knows! I hope to see you guys there too!
