Back in 2020 I shared my thoughts on #creativity and clinical #depression. It seemed to chime with many of you and since it’s World Mental Health day today, I thought maybe it was time to revisit it… . I was diagnosed at 19, when I had no real responsibilities other than to scrape my way through a degree. My twenties became an interesting time - I had some very happy times but they were shadowed by this big black cloud that would empty itself of rain at the most inconvenient moments. . I’m now firmly middle-aged and have learnt to manage the cloud into near insignificance. There are occasional showers or threats of thunder, but I have a sturdy umbrella, and a decent pair of galoshes. I might get splashed but rarely get soaked to the skin. . Initially anti-depressants helped but I found over the years that letting my creativity, curiosity and imagination loose created a longer lasting waterproofing. It’s not an unusual solution but everyone has to find their own in their own time. The pleasure of switching off from the rest of the world while designing a new piece, the satisfaction when a piece turns out as imagined, and the meditative sensation of drawing a needle through fabric - all these things bring me comfort and a deep sense of #peace ☔️ . It’s #worldmentalhealthday today so I urge you to take five minutes to think about the things that bring you greatest comfort and give you a sense of yourself. I’m not ashamed of my depression- it’s as much part of me as my weirdly-shaped feet or capacious bosom, and has shaped who I am and what I do today. . If you’re in the early stages where even breathing seems too hard, pick up a pencil and let your hand draw the emptiness - no rules, no ‘can’t’s, throw it away, keep it, hide it, show it...maybe it’ll work for you, maybe it won’t, but it’s something. . It’s been lovely to see such a response to my IG and FB posts from Saturday, #worldmentalhealthday - thank you for all your kind words and recommendations of things to try to get through bouts of #depression 😊 . One of the most popular remedies was fresh air - whether for a walk, gardening, stitching/reading outside or just opening a window, connecting with the outdoors seems to help so many of you. For me, it helps to put things into perspective and takes me out of the day to day grind - a bit like doing a reboot on myself! 🌳🌿🍃🌷 . I particularly love this time of year for walking - especially sunny, chilly days when you can get bundled up in cosy coats and scarves, tramp across crispy leaves, breathe in those autumnal smells and return home for hot soup! 😊🍁🍂🍄 . Like millions of you out there, I have clinical #depression. I was incredibly fortunate to be diagnosed when I was 19, with no real responsibilities other than to scrape my way through a degree. My twenties in particular were an interesting time - I had some very happy times but they were shadowed by this big black cloud that would follow me and empty itself of rain at the most inconvenient moments. .
