Why Pacat’s Captive Prince is so ✨captivating✨ and the role of fandom in an often monotoned life.

By way of warning *Spoiler Alert*

So it’s been a few months now since I went on a whim and decided to read my copy of Captive Prince which had been sitting on my bookshelf for years, along with many novels I have yet to delve into for leisure.

Upon devouring the series, the accompanying short-story collection, and now being neck deep in both reading and writing Capri fanfics—I decided to take a step back, in order to reflect on the aspects which I believe made Pacat’s work so distinct, and ultimately fantastic:

The blend of third-person/the unreliable narrator: I think it was clear pretty early on, that Laurent knew who Damen was. Damianos was giving very much dumb jock energy and I will admit it was sometimes frustrating to read. I will say however, that his ignorance in this respect, is reflective of how black and white his thinking is. He held a “right is right” and “wrong is wrong” type of mentality, which is the stark opposite of Laurent, whose nature is cunning as a means of survival from the regent’s abuse. And as they say, opposites attract! Unreliable narrator was definitely a literary choice, one which I found to be effective.

The world-building. Okay, the absolute debauchery that was thrown in our faces in book one was jarring—but I think there is something to be said about the function of shock and the depictions of pleasure. Veretians were described to do everything in extreme hedonistic extravagance, from sex-rings to mentions of public consummation, I’d argue that we as readers were made to feel just as shocked as Damen was when he was first faced with it all. Indulgences like sex, which is often done in private is brought to the forefront of this fictitious world. The hidden being made into a public spectacle in such a bold fashion has a sort of twisted appeal.

The idea of a homo-normative society. The way in which Veretian custom frowns upon the opposite sex coupling up because they’d produce bastards, and the encouragement of same-sex relations is a very interesting concept. “Bastards curse the line, and sour the milk, ruin the crops, and drag the sun out of the sky” (Prince’s Gambit, 168). IM—Our often homophobic society could never.

Illicitness/opposites attract: Damen and Laurent are polar opposites. Akielos and Vere are described as rival countries, so to have two people from warring lands fall in love, already aligns with the famed trope that predates the iconic Romeo and Juliet. Throw in a pleasure slave/master dynamic and also “my lover is my brother’s killer”—whew! The illicitness is shockingly off of the charts, which makes the story so so good.

On the significance of re-reading—now, upon re-reading Prince’s Gambit and Kings Rising, I clocked several intricacies and notable details that I did not recognize nor fully appreciate the very first time I delved into the books:

Jokaste: ugh my girl Jo—Y’ALL KNOW HOW I FEEL. Pls, when you’ve finished here, go show my fics ‘Mirrored Reptiles’ and ‘Meet Me At The Clock’ some love on AO3. Shameless plug aside, Jokaste’s switch in Kings Rising, from antagonist who betrayed Damen in book one, to it being revealed that she in fact saved him from Kastor by sending him off to Vere is such an UNDERRATED function of hers! If it wasn’t for Jokaste, Damen and Laurent would never have met! Every scene she was in during Kings Rising were so damn powerful, she was basically Laurent but scarier because she was calm about it!

The lyrics of the songs described during the parties scenes which played along with the kithara. Kill me. The poetry, I just can’t. Too good.

Laurent’s tactical manoeuvres while fighting against his uncle. Holy crap, everything from his negotiations with Vask and meeting Nikandros, I was so caught up with the romance that at first I missed the extent of the political complexities and the sheer treacheries at play. Laurent as a character is honestly so resilient.

The ending. People tend to say it felt rushed and at first, I thought the same. But the second time I read it over, it absolutely makes sense. It’s a full circle moment for Laurent to have killed Kastor, it made equal what Damen did to Auguste. Damen being left to nearly bleed out on the floor of the baths is honestly very fitting, considering everything that transpired prior. We are reminded that this isn’t just a love story, it is a war-centred narrative, thus a dramatic ending such as was published is appropriate.

Trigger Warning: Mentions of R*pe & Sexual Assault

Finally, a note on the regent and sexual assault. Critics deem that this story condones rape, it is clear from the early parts of book one, that it does not. Damen is described to be sickened by the sexual activities of minors from the get-go. Rape is addressed, not condoned in this work. I would have closed its bounds and threw it out if the narrative was some bullshit romanticizing a minor and a grown ass man. The Regent is disgusting and got everything coming to him by the end of it all. As for the mention of aspects like sexual assault and slavery, though unfortunate, disgusting and utterly wrong to read about or to consider, these are the realities that span global history. Though I want to say that we’ve come far, I’d argue that the atrocities detailed in this work still happen to this day, though in discreet forms, which is honestly even more alarming. If anything, Captive Prince touches on larger problems that span far greater than the fictitious world Pacat presents.

On fandom and fanfiction:

When I finished the trilogy and ate up the short stories, it still wasn’t enough. It’s been a long while since I’ve indulged in fanfiction, haven’t shipped a couple since Larry from One Direction y’all 😂. Life just got in the way. Though after speaking with my lovely cousin who has always been involved in some type of fandom, upon her suggestion I searched Captive Prince on AO3, and the rest is history. My god, I am astounded by the sheer talent that some writers possess, truly, there are folks out here thriving in their craft who need to be published in a professional capacity. Furthermore, for me to be able to write as a way to give back to the series that has meant so much to me, in a time of my life that I chose not to detail for anonymity’s sake—has honestly been so wonderful. Even though Captive Prince was published many years ago and I am late joiner of this fandom, the beauty of fanfic is that it stands the test of time and exists in order that people will always have free access, and enjoy the labour of love that writers extend by their own genuine volition.

What a joy it is to have discovered Captive Prince, in the year that Dark Rise is being released.

In a rather monotoned life, to have fanfic is to have a glimmer of hope.♥️

Linked Universe Dynamics

(or at least how I view everyone getting along)

Warriors/Time: Big bro, baby bro/mother hen extreme mode. Wars treats Time like his little brother and Time goes with it. Wars is who Time goes to when things get rough.

Warriors/Twilight: Best friends that can hear each others thoughts and often speak in sync. Just the best of buds. Two peas in a pod if you will. Often laugh at the younger boys and gang up on them occasionally.

Warriors/Four: managed mischief......fear them. Oh the ideas and strategies that come out of those two when they're together. Incredible.

Warriors/Wild: Mischief not even trying to be managed in any way at all. They don't know what to do with eachother and their stupidity is contagious. Senior/Freshman friendship energy.

Warriors/Wind: Same person different font, very cute and cuddly but in a will die for you way. Warriors tries not to baby Wind, and Wind goes to him to share thoughts or ideas he has when he's afraid no one will listen. Wars goes to him too.

Warriors/Hyrule: unexpectedly wholesome big bro/little bro. The hair ruffling duo. They're just so delightful together, and make everyone feel more comfortable and relaxed.

Warriors/Legend: Oldest child vs. middle child best friends/but sometimes I hate you. They talk a lot and keep eachother going when they need it. Super super great fighting team. Best in the group actually. They just know.

Warriors/Sky: you know that one cousin you just vibe with? Seriously they're so chill. Chill duo all the way. Sky likes to tease Warriors occasionally, but Wars really looks up to Sky and they just work.

Time/Twilight: Will jump off a cliff for you without hesitation. They also constantly communicate every little thing to eachother. They know that if they aren't both in the loop, something could go very wrong.

Time/Four: Reasonable™ shares glances and eye rolls so.......sass duo. Sass duo all the way. Four likes hanging around Time and they both just sort of get eachother. They don't have to try too hard to judge a situation.

Time/Wild: Father/child sort of, but mainly it's trust duo. Wild usually goes to Twi for things, but when he goes to Time that means it's really really necessary. Time is always there, and he always keeps what Wild tells him to himself. Wild does the same.

Time/Wind: Don't call me son. Bond over how great of a big brother Wars is. Wind is actually the one that checks on Time the most. He's also not afraid to get in his bubble when it's needed. The others hesitate when Time needs something because they don't want to bother him, but Wind and Wars don't. It's a cool little bond they have.

Time/Hyrule: Breakfast duo/soft duo. Very sweet together, likes to sit by eachother at meals or by the campfire. Time sometimes pulls Roolie aside to show him something, and Hyrule likes to just listen to Time talk when he wants to.

Time/Legend: Leaders. Stubborn by definition™ holy crap run for cover. These two.....HYLIA THESE TWO. They are so incredibly difficult, but there is something there that is so cool. Time knows that Legend is the one that will step up if something needs to be done. Hard things, simple things, helpful things, tricky things, you name it. He is sort of Time's backup, and they are the only ones that know. If anything happened to Time, Legend would take charge without hesitation and vice versa. Really cool.

Time/Sky: College kid teaching a Highschool kid how to win at life. Surprisingly nice dynamic here. Time likes to listen to Sky talk. It takes his mind off of things and let's him relax and be happy. Some of Sky's less light conversations are held with Time as well. They are the ones that will talk until 3am about anything and everything.

Twilight/Four: Friends/Silent understanding. Never awkward. Always speak their mind around eachother. Confidants. Four talks to Twi about his problems, and Twi goes to Four too. They also like to high five and they fight well together.

Twilight/Wild: Little brother/Big brother sometimes chaotic but mostly loving and supporting. Wild wakes Twi from his bad dreams and Twi does the same for Wild. They would end the world for eachother.

Twilight/Wind: Proud duo. They like to show eachother things they know. They will seek eachother out when they discover something and share knowledge it's so cute. Wind and Twi also give eachother hugs and pats on the back a lot.

Twilight/Hyrule: Brunette squad/Forest duo. Get mistaken for brothers a lot. Really cute, will jump in leaves together when everybody nobody is watching. They can be themselves around eachother. Twi doesn't ask for anything from Hyrule and Hyrule doesn't ask anything from Twi. They can just exist together in peace.

Twilight/Legend: Actually responsible duo. Will corral the others or step up if needed. They make eachother laugh, which confuses the crap out of everyone else. Also they are the duo that would stand in the corner and silently judge you. It's great.

Twilight/Sky: Gossip duo. Tea is spilt, stories are shared, life is discussed. They do be in the know. They also like to fiddle with their hands and do puzzles together. They're also quite competitive and it's funny to watch them play a game and start screaming at eachother. It's unexpected but so, so hilarious to watch.

Four/Wild: bad ideas that work somehow. Hide your valuables, they comin. They're sneaky and they're really chaotic together, but in a functional way....I'm not sure how or why and niether does anybody else.

Four/Wind: Entertainment duo. Likes to pull pranks but also just play games with eachother. Hyrule and Wild occasionally join in. They get in trouble a lot, but that's just how it is.

Four/Hyrule: Beast mode fighter squad. These two are small but mighty and they will destroy the world, then have tea afterward. Also Four teaches Hyrule stuff he doesn't know and vice versa.

Four/Legend: Snark, smarter than anyone or anything in Hyrule, and really close friends. They just have a really really cool dynamic I can't fully explain.

Four/Sky: Affection. Four will go to Sky and only Sky for hugs or comfort. Underrated duo with a fierce loyalty to eachother. They will always take the side of the other person no matter what.

Wild/Wind: really adorable brother dynamic. They occasionally get into trouble, but mostly they just hang out. Pretty underrated duo actually.

Wild/Hyrule: Adventure gang! Always getting lost and exploring. Always coming home with a new story. They like being with eachother because they don't baby or underestimate eachother. Super great team these two.

Wild/Legend: Nerves nerves nerves, Will laugh at each others jokes and be friendly but they push eachothers buttons the most in the group.

Wild/Sky: Solid. Deep respect for eachother and they bond over culture and life. Sunlight duo. They're just bright young men that like to watch the stars together.

Wind/Hyrule: Energy duo. Keep the group alive on long days of walking. Also stay up late chatting. They also like to hear each others stories.

Wind/Legend: Dont tell me what to do!/What do I do!? Aka they share a braincell and react to being proved right/wrong the same way (often it's when they're together too)

Wind/Sky: Free duo. They CANNOT handle being trapped or underground or in the dark. They need the sun and the sky to be ok, and they stick together when they feel scared or trapped.

Hyrule/Legend: Downfall duo. Their bond is special and so strong do not mess with them. They're smart, they're fast, and they're fierce. Also the world would end if something happened to one of them.

Hyrule/Sky: Triforce duo. Do not anger at all costs. They are the shoulders to lean on when things get rough, but they are also the fiercest fighters. They both have the full triforce and together they fight like a hurricane. It's......terrifying in theory actually.

Legend/Sky: In the know. They just get eachother. Legend will occasionally be snarky, but they just silently understand and actually go to eachother for advise and help. Really cool dynamic with these two.

• “Who the hell was that guy?” Nyx Rosed up. Nyx isn’t normally one to be jealous but. But he’s been really feeling it lately. He doesn’t really know why.

• “I was just- I was just-“ Y/N was stuttering. Nyx slowly getting upset was starting to trigger horrible memories with a certain Ex.

• Than Y/N started tearing up. Nyx was upset and it was there fault.

• Nyx was taken back. He did mean to make them cry!

• “Y/N! I’m sorry!” It was then Nyx realized he messed up. He let his jealousy get the best of him. What the heck is wrong with him?

• Nyx then cradled Y/N. He hurt the person who helped him when he was down. Now, he had to help them.

• “Y/N...I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to get angry. I-I know you wouldn’t cheat on me.”

• “I-I know.”

• Nyx knew he had to make it right to them.

• Nyx planned a weekend getaway with Y/N.

• Y/N also explained why they got teared up.

• Y/N’s Ex would get Angry if Y/N was out of there site after five minutes...literally.

• And worse...Y/N’s Ex would even beat them.

• Nyx was heartbroken.

• Nyx promised to do better. Y/N was happy to have Nyx.

• he’s understanding, Kind, and willing to make up for there mistakes.

• he isn’t perfect but to them...he is perfect.

Cor

• Despite his hard exterior, he actually has a big heart.

• Especially towards his S/O.

• But he’s also...Overprotective

• but he has his reasons

• the first time he met his S/O, he saved them from there terrible Ex.

• and he’s lost a lot of people in his and losing his S/O? Well it might literally kill him.

• But it makes him very overprotective of S/O and she feels really cornered.

• They can fight very well on there own but it doesn’t do much to calm Cor’s anxiety.

• he wants them safe!

• His S/O has to sneak out, so they can hunt, train and for gods sake, get away from Cor!

• They love him but it’s a bit much.

• Y/N starts to feel like they can’t go anywhere.

• reminds them of there Ex who wanted to know everywhere and what there doing at every damn minute.

• But the difference is that, There Ex did this to control them while Cor doesn’t want anything to happen to them.

• But one day Cor catch’s Them sneaking out and they get into a fight.

• “Why are you sneaking out?!” Cor shouted.

• “Cmon Cor. I need to get stronger and your suffocating me.” At this point, Y/N has had enough and runs out of the door. completely fed up.

• Cor, worried about Y/N, follows suit.

• For awhile, Y/N is able to train peacefully until Cor runs up to Y/N.

• Unfortunately, it triggers Y/N cause it reminds them of there Ex, who chased Y/N back to there onced shared home.

• Cor is shocked by his S/O’s sudden break down.

• Then he remembers how his S/O was chased by there Ex and dragged back to there home.

• Cor realized that he messed up.

• He needs to let go.

• he apologizes to his S/O and steps back and let them get Train.

• he even battled against them and lost.

• Normally he isn’t happy about losing (especially to Gladio) but Seeing S/O battle and getting stronger, makes him smile.

• “Babe, was that a smile I see?”

• He even blushed ☺️

• His S/O has gotten so Strong, that there able to join Cor and his colleagues.

• He’s so happy for Y/N.

• Still tho, he feels bad about what happened.

• so he plans a “getaway” with his S/O. If you catch my drift 😏

10. None specifically that I can think of. There are several fandoms I’ve heard nightmare stories about, but they weren’t fandoms I would have ever interacted with to begin with, so it doesn’t matter much.

18. I’m not sure to what this pertains, but harking back to the last ask I really do want to sprinkle some OCs in this bish. The C-Drama fandom does OCs so damn well it just so inspiring — I really need to step up my OC game! I’d also like to try having actual character profiles for once -stares at unfinished character bio pages-

22. Oh this is really hard. There are so many. Please, no one take offense if your name does not wind up on here. I admire all of my followers so much, so I’m just gonna pick five people (in no particular order) that I interact with a lot/have a lot of headcanons around:

@battleguqin — Nyx was the first person to follow me in the C-Drama fandom over on my LWJ blog ( @ofwindsweptpines ) and I absolutely adore her. She has an excellent grasp on her Sizhui and I have so much fun writing and headcanoning with her. 10/10 would recommend, absolute sweetheart.

@aeipathic — Rhys is a gem. A complete treasure. Their writing is top notch, and I can’t say enough about their characterization. They have such a range and flexibility with their muses, and flows between them with just admirable fluency. They are also a really stellar person OOC and I enjoy chatting with them so much. Great friend and wonderful RP partner. I can’t wait to torture them with angst my love forever. You should too!

@prismaris / @necrrot / @ziyoue — Burd’s OC game is real. God I am constantly in awe of his creativity and range. And the ART!! My god the art is incredible. Burd inspires me so much in so many ways, and I just can’t recommend him enough.

@evcryopeneye — Sammie my Scottish sweetheart~ Sammie takes some seriously underrated characters and just applies so much love and tender care to them, and really makes them shine!! I consider myself lucky every day to have her as a friend and an RP partner, and she’s amazing for humoring a very unpopular ship for my sake (MWAH!) Be sure to go give her love if you don’t already!

@moonlitimmortal / @nobilitylost / @asunas-embers — this is a little bit cheating, but many of the people I listed have been around long enough to follow one another, so I’m gonna list some people who are new to my blog/dash that some of my old followers might not know/have interacted with yet. - Pandi��s OC Sun Anle is a beautiful MDZS-based character that mixes some fantasy aspects with more cultivational aspects, and would fit in so easily with so many different verses. Mun is a real sweetheart that so kindly gave my best girl smooches without question. Big plus. - KRex has been in my DMs since I met them screaming with me about fandom things and I’ve decided I’m keeping them. Beautiful writer and highly suggestible to new C-Drama suggestions -greedy raccoon hands- - Emily’s Asuna is a Mortal Kombat OC with a very impressively crafted background. I know next to nothing about MK lore, but they make me want to read more into it (which is saying a lot for an OC!) She’s working on C-Drama verses for Asuna and from what I’ve seen so far they’re excellent and well worth exploring. I can’t wait to explore more!

:Bonus: If y’all don’t follow the mun who sent this ask ( @yuanre / @xingzuoyu ) , do it right now. Ni is an absolute gem and an incredible writer. Their love for Boya (and all of their muses) knows no bounds, and they are just one of the sweetest and most generous people I’ve met. They also make beautiful edits! Holy crap I’ve been spoiled with some amazing aesthetics.

end of year writing meme

time for my end of year writing meme! this has been a tradition for me since 2015 or 16, so i’m excited to keep it up :) i normally do it ON new year’s eve because i write over winter break. but.

i have the depression/anxiety cocktail and have to go back to teaching next monday so i highly doubt i’ll get anything else written or posted by then. sigh

Total Words Written: i know my ao3 stats are shifted p drastically this year because i updated two extensive drabble collections, but i do have more unposted drafts this year so i’ll just go with it. 96k Average Words Per Story: about 5k as the mean, which tracks Shortest Story: 370 words Heaven on Her Mind Longest: 11,875 words Academia Nuts

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d predicted?

less! i knew i’d write less this year than i have in the past because student teaching and then first year of teaching are both supposed to be hell, but i kind of expected going into quarantine that would give me the time and energy to write.

but NO! in some months of quarantine i wrote less than i did during student teaching, certified most stressful time of my life

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write most?

pairing: cassunzel! coming in clutch at 6 stories

genre: no fucking clue

fandom: tangled was the most by number, but i think jedi fallen order is the most by word count because those two fics combined come in about 13k

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January? uh, that’s probably rwby. i always knew that when i watched rwby i’d go feral but i didn’t expect to watch it this year

Did you take any writing risks this year? i think my biggest writing risk was writing a 12k fic with romcom tropes about a platonic relationship no one cares about from a mainly dead fandom

Academia Nuts, the one where merlin and morgana are bickering in-laws and academic rivals

Do you have any fanfic or general writing goals for the new year? i would frankly just like the time and energy TO write. this year has been the most stressful and depressing time of my life and that’s reflected in my writing output. i would like to see more output because i have more energy and drive to do the things that make me happy again

Best story of this year: the thing with feathers fluttering in her chest the jedi fallen order fic about trilla suduri capturing cal kestis but still eventually deciding to defect

Personal favorite: Smoke Rises, Cinder Falls my personal take on the cinder backstory before it dropped! while i definitely like where the show took the backstory better because the hotel imagery is TOP NOTCH i still love what i did here. i think that i made good use of style and the information that we had, and i think that the salem connection works very nicely

Most under-appreciated: i know calling a fic with 65 kudos “underrated” is a bit ridiculous, but this is for a very large fandom. it might be dead but i still think it could drum up a bit more support :(

Academia Nuts, the merlin and morgana are bickering in-laws and academic rivals fic

Most fun to write: as a reward for being so fucking happy that biden won the election for real, i rewarded myself by writing the pines family reacting to it

Biggest disappointment: frankly, nothing i wrote this year can be a disappointment because i put words on a page. however, i will say that i could have polished this one that i wrote years ago up more before i posted it

Holy Ground, the shireen/jeyne poole fic from like 2015

Favorite character to write: i didn’t get stuck on a fandom long enough to get a favorite character to write tbh

Favorite opening lines:

Sometimes, when Rapunzel wakes up in the morning, she likes to pretend that everything is alright. She closes her eyes and imagines that Cass is right down the hall, just like she used to be. Rapunzel will burst into her room as soon as she gets up, ready to plot some new mischief to keep them busy for the day. Cass will roll her eyes, but she’ll go along with it because she secretly enjoys Rapunzel’s plans. She’ll smile when Rapunzel isn’t looking, and she’ll call her Raps with a soft fondness that makes Rapunzel's heart melt.

Sophie knows that she shouldn’t be walking home alone at this hour. Of course she knows that. She’s a tiny white girl who lives in Gotham with little self-defense training or experience in athletics. She’s had “don’t walk home alone” beaten into her head for so many years she wonders if those were the first words the nurse said when she came into this world.

Not “it’s a girl!” but “don’t let her walk home alone at night!”

Top 5 Things I Liked About RWBY Volume 1

(Top 5 Dislikes)

Well, got the Dislikes out of the way. So let's move on to the Likes! While V1 is my least favorite volume, I still adore it. I mean it is the volume that got me and many others into RWBY and without we, well... we obviously wouldn’t have a show. I can forgive many of the issues that I listed, as well as things like limited animation and amateur voice acting since it was V1 when they had a smaller budget and were figuring stuff out. ANd there were still plenty of things to love, especially now.

So let take a trip down memory lane and look back at some of the best parts of the beginning of our journey with RWBY Volume 1~!

#5. The Character Trailers

Okay, this might be cheating since they’re technically not part of the volume. But they were made to lead-up to it like the later trailers were for later volumes and they have story relevance later, so I’m counting it! Plus I want to talk about them somewhere because I freakin’ love these so much~!

These trailers are what got me into RWBY. I remember looking up stuff about the show when I started getting interested in it back in late 2013, and I went to watch them when I found out about them. Making these was a very smart move. They introduce us to our characters early on, gave us a feel of each aspect of the show, and of course created hype to ensure that people tuned in when the actual show started. The Red Trailer shows off the amazing fighting animaiton, White shows off the epic soundtrack, Black introduces plot elements and shows that there will be more than just cool fighting, and Yellow brings 'em all together in one badass package. When I binged through all four of these, I became a fan very quickly. I started the show that night, finished the next afternoon as V1 had practically ended just before I started, and I haven’t looked back ever since. And when parts of them came back into the plot later like the bar that Yang trashed in V2? That made me even happier cause it made them have a point outside of just hype.

The trailers were all fantastic. RT was clearly betting a lot on this show to allow Monty to do these, and the gamble paid off. All four of them have their own unique style and aesthetic and still looks amazing even now. It’s why whenever I see anyone ask where to start with RWBY, I tell them to watch these first. They do a great job of introducing you to this world, and with us going into the seventh volume, their impact is still being felt. I couldn’t not put these on here, but since they aren’t technically part of the volume, I left it at Number 5. But still, these are great and if you skipped them, go and watch them. Now. The list will still be here when you get back.

#4. Fight Animation

...what? Are we surprised that this is on here? Monty’s fight animation is amazing. Even years later, they still hold up. Monty got his start at RTwuth his fight animaiton in RvB, which truly brought that series to the next level. Then he got his won show with even more freedom to go crazy, and boy did he deliver. Sure it didn’t always work well, like when he did it for Penny in the finale and gave away the reveal s a result. But it’ still a badass sequence. All fo the major fights are. The trailer fights, Ruby in Chapter 1, the Nevermore fight in 8, everything else in between and after, it all looked incredible. They were fast, creative, and just so much funt o watch. while I am one fo the people who strongly disagree that the fights went downhill after V3, Monty’s style cannot be duplicated. Nor should it be. We may never have Monty’s fights again, but they will forever live on. That’s honestly for the best.

#3. Weiss Development/Rewatch Value

I was a little harsh on Weiss in the Dislikes post, so let's fix that! I love Weiss. She is my second favorite character and one of the best developed. While I complained about her writing int he finale, outside that? She was good. She was snooty and bitchy, but we saw in Chapter 8 that she is aware of her flaws and did save Ruby as well as give her a pep talk... kinda. But The Badge and the Burden is where she really shines. She’s mad about being led by a childish girl who pretty much got allowed into Beacon, Port gave her a stern but encouraging talking to, and Weiss began to try and improve herself as both a teammate and as a person. It’s simple, but for Volume 1, it was nice and made her likable after how mean she was in the first half of the volume.

Then the rest of the series happened, and Weiss in V1 becomes even better.

It makes Weiss’ attitude make sense. She had to work and fight to earn her way into Beacon. Her father outright forced her to fight a Grimm Knight to earn the right to leave and almost lost an eye due to it. Then she meets this careless girl who rushes into fights, gets in her way, and as far as she knows did nothing to get into Beacon while she had to fight tooth and nail. Then the same girl got to be leader despite generally goofing off and not taking anything seriously, and it makes Weiss being angry 100% understandable. She still acted poorly, hence why Port’s talk was necessary, but it isn’t Weiss just being a stereotypical mean rich girl. She has reasons why she acts the way that she does, and she can recognize those flaws and work to fix it. Even with my complaint about her in the finale she DOES follow it up and improve her attitude towards Blake, Faunus, and her team.

Weiss is a fantastic character. V1 gives you many reasons to dislike her, but over time you grow to love her. This volume was the first step in her breaking out of the toxic and hateful environment and mindset that she was raised in, and she took that step in spades. Rewatching her in this volume makes you appreciate her character so much. Again, her development here is simple, but important and overall solid outside of a few spots. I think that Weiss’ arc has the most rewatch value in this volume, and I appreciate it so much. It is a little spotty though, so I put it at Number 3. But we have another good character arc to talk about, one that I think is underrated to be honest.

#2. Ruby Development

Ruby is my favorite character in the entire series. She was since I started the show, and she still is to this day. Many call her a flat and boring character, and it annoys me. But I do see the complaint that up until recently, she hasn't developed. That she is the exact same as when she started. Ugh... yeah, no. I know that V1 was a while ago and that a lot has happened since then, but she developed greatly in this volume and beyond.

In V1, Ruby is just a girl who dreams of being a Huntress. But it’s kinda like a childish fantasy. One that she’s genuine about, but one that she isn’t truly prepared for. She thinks that all she needs is her badass scythe, and she’ll be fine. She’s reckless, charging into battle to prove that she is capable fo being at Beacon. SHe’s awkward and doesn't want to make friends or teammates. Not because she’s anti-social, but because she’s an awkward girl who is already feeling pressure due to not wanting to be received as special when she got let into Beacon early.

This volume greatly sets Ruby on the right path. Her recklessness gets her into trouble, and she only survives because of characters like Weiss helping. She isn’t able to truly take on Grimm until she starts working as a team with the others, in which she stands up and takes the reigns. She starts channeling her recklessness into crazy plans, like the slingshot, which shows her out-of-the-box thinking that becomes a major asset to her. The Badge and the Burden shows her acting childish, goofing off in class and not paying attention. But we also see that she’s anxious in her new role as leader and if she truly belongs in Beacon or if Ozpin made a mistake in letting her in. But Oz gives her a nice pep talk and we later see that she fell asleep while studying, showing that she is trying to put effort into her studies and into her new position. Encouragement that she later gives Jaune, showing that she took ti to heart.

As with Weiss, it’s simple stuff. But it’s still major progression for Ruby. While her goal of Huntress is still somewhat of s childish fantasy, it’s genuine. She is genuine about wanting to help people and make their lives better just because she wants to. Not out fo any personal goal or thrill, just because she wants to do good. We see that she’s learning as she tarts to put her anxiety aside to work with her teammates, learn to take school seriously, learn to not be so reckless and not be so worried about proving that she can do this, and of course begin to take her first steps in becoming a leader. Steps that will lead to great things for her, especially in V6. I can’t properly gush about Ruby in this post, but I love her growth here so much, and it’s one of the best things in the volume for me.

#1. Players and Pieces

So... you’re probably wondering why this is Number One. Well... it’s because while the trailers got me to watch RWBYm this was the episode that convinced me that it was worth something. I enjoyed Chapters 1-7, but I was kinda waiting for that moment that made me see why it had gotten so popular so quickly. I didn’t watch RWBY when it started I hadn’t even heard of Rooster Teeth at that point. I just saw my friends talking about it, got curious, and started watching it. It was nice... but it didn’t really impress me or get why people were loving this so much. It just felt like a slightly above average web series.

Then I got to Players and Pieces.

This episode wowed me when I watched it. You know how I said that the trailers introduced certain aspects and yellow brought them all together? Well, this chapter did that for something within the show. Awesome fight animaiton? Check. Weiss development? Check. Ruby development? Check. It had good humor. It was paced well. It felt satisfying. And the soundtrack? Holy crap the soundtrack. Yeah, I had to force myself to not put ‘Jeff Williams Music’ on this list because it would be redundant, and putting it on every list would get old. But the moment that Red Like Roses Part II kicked in, everything ramped up. Especially when Ruby slayed the Nevermore. That scene is outright iconic.

This chapter took everything that the first seven was building up to and it delivered an amazing payoff. The characters were great. The animaiton was great. The tone was great. It was funny, heartwarming, and badass in every single way. This was when I realized just how amazing this show was going to be. This is when I decided to hop on board the hype train. This was when I became a real fan, and I am still going even six years later. It’ crazy to me that we’re going into V7, cause whenever I rewatch the moment where Ruby is launched at the nevermore and urns up that cliff, I remember when I first saw the scene. And I still feel the same awe that I felt the first time. When I need to remember why I love this show, I turn to this. It was amazing then, and it’s still amazing now and will always be something that I treasure.

And that’s a wrap! My Top 5 Things for RWBY Volume 1~ It was so much fun to go back through this volume. It’s still a fun ride from beginning to end, and will always have a special place among RWBY fans. Chapter 6 (Part 1)

By the time I had finished getting ready it was about time for Jimmy to come pick me up.

I still has extra time so I decided to go to the kitchen to make a drink so I could get a little loose before the event even started.

“Look at you!” Matt hollers coming out of his room with Cameron.

“You look gorgeous!” She says “I love your dress.”

“Thank you” I blush.

The dress I was wearing was the color of champagne with a slit coming up along the side. There was also a deep V neck that was lined with lace.

I had done subtle makeup with a bold eyeliner and soft pink lips, my hair was curled at the ends which was the way it usually was anyway.

“It was a gift” I say “from my mom long ago, just now getting the chance to wear it.”

“Well she has beautiful taste” Cameron compliments.

“I’ll let her know” I say sipping the old fashioned that I had made “I haven’t seen you guys since this morning what have you done all day?”

“Oh you know” Matt says winking.

“Good god” I say “have you eaten food or anything?”

“Nope!” He says “which is exactly the mission we are on. That and to go back to Cameron’s apartment and get her some clothes to bring back here.”

“Moving in?” I ask.

“Not quiet” she laughs “we’ve only known each other a day, but we’ve had a lot of fun so I figure why not hang out another day.”

“Well you’re always welcome.” I say “we need a place with more rooms, this one only has 3 and there is 4 of us.”

“How did you and Kenny end up sharing the room together?” Cameron asks.

“We gambled and we lost” Matt says “plus these girls have way more crap than we do.”

“True” I huff.

“I might make Kenny move into another room though, now that your around.” Matt says seductively.

“Oh brother.” I roll my eyes “Well it’s not gonna be mine, my name is on the lease so I can kick all of you guys out.”

“You wouldn’t” Matt laughs.

“Try me” I say taking another sip of my drink.

“So what are your plans for tonight?” Cameron asks.

“Yeah why are you so dressed up?” Matt retorts.

“Well I have an important event to attend with a Mr. Jimmy Page.” I say.

“Your still seeing him?” Cameron asks.

“To my dismay... what can I say he insists.”

“Did you just meet him yesterday?” She asks.

“Last night” I reply.

“Oh man when I slept with him it was only once-“ Cameron begins but is cut off by Matt “what!”

“Yeah what?” I cough.

“Did I not mention that?” She says.

“Uh no” I say still surprised.

“It was years ago” she says “look they always come back to the same crowd when they are here, I was with my friends at the rainbow lounge and Led Zeppelin showed up. He saw me, he liked me, and asked me to his room.”

“Wait so... what!” I ask.

“We slept together and then the next morning we said our goodbyes... look all I’m saying is that your lucky he is still pursuing you, I mean that genuinely.”

“Well the event tonight is business... mostly.” I stutter.

“I bet he likes you” she smirks.

Meanwhile Matt was still dumbfound, Cameron realizes this and turns to him “your not mad baby are you?”

He gulps “I mean I guess not, free love and everything. I’m just a bit taken off guard.”

“Me too.” I say “and about him liking me we shall see, he asked me to be his girlfriend for the week but who the hell knows what that means.”

She raises her eyebrows “oh you know.”

“Do I though?” I chuckle.

Ding! we hear the doorbell.

“Oh shit I haven’t put on my shoes yet! Matt get the door!” I say running to my room to put my shoes on.

I was sitting on my bed when I heard him open the door “Jimmy! Always a pleasure!” Matt says and I hear them shake hands.

“You as well” Jimmy says in a soft spoken voice “is the lady of the hour ready?”

“Right here” I say stepping out of my room.

His eyes begin to widen as he gives me a soft hug his hands reaching down my waist.

“You look breath taking” He says into my ears causing me to blush.

“And you as well” I say gushing over his silver suit jacket and green button up. He had his Zoso sign pinned to his collar so everyone could see it.

“Where’s this from?” I ask stroking my thumb over the gold pin.

“I had it hand made.” He smirks “shall we.”

“Yes” I say grabbing my purse from the table beside me.

“Alright don’t have too much fun you two.” Matt says walking us out.

Jimmy laughs “it’s not that kind of party, but who knows about later in the evening.”

“Don’t wanna know.” Matt laughs. “Keep in touch Lil!”

“Oh I will” I say looking back at him as Cameron came and put her arms around him.

“Make good choices!” She yelled

“Okay!” I laugh at them acting like my parents as Jimmy opened the car door for me.

“Thank you sir!” I say slipping in.

“Not a problem” he says closing the door then getting in on the other side.

He told the driver the directions then closed the gap between him and us.

“So did you figure out what you were dealing with this morning?” I ask him.

“Just about” Jimmy says “we have all these producers trying to give us an unfair cut, and our label is trying to make us release singles which I absolutely will not do.”

“Is that because the radio will shorten the songs and you get held down while trying to make an album.” I say.

“Exactly!” He says “someone who finally understands.”

I laugh “Well I know a few things about that.”

“There’s just a lot of bastards out there trying to milk the industry, meanwhile we are doing a majority of the work. I’m strongly considering creating my own label.” He says.

“You should do it” I say “and let my band use your platform as well, I hate those people as much as you do.”

He laughs “that’s the dream”

“Tell me about it. Mark my words we would be a lot bigger if we hadn’t signed on to these sour deals.”

“I believe you my dear.” He says “I don’t know why people have such a problem with rock bands wanting to dabble in acoustic music, it’s only the balled version after all.”

“Are you talking about Led Zeppelin III?” I chuckle.

“The media’s response to it was just ridiculous.” He says.

“I agree, especially since we do a lot of balled tracks as well, Led Zeppelin III is actually my favorite album.”

“Really?” He asks.

“Oh yeah it’s totally underrated.” I say “but that’s just my opinion.”

“Tell me why is it your favorite?” He asks.

“Well it’s the complete package.” I say “it has the acoustic balled tracks but it also just has songs that rock you know? Out on the Tiles is amazing and Tangerine and That’s the Way are just fucking lovely and relaxing and just uplifting. Then there’s Since I’ve Been Loving You and let me tell you Jimmy every time I hear that song... it feels like I’m fucking melting.”

He smirks “How do you mean love?”

“I mean it’s definitely one of my favorites, just your solos-when you play it’s like I can hear you speaking to me... I listened to it on LSD once and holy shit it was like I was feeling brand new feelings. I can’t really describe it, the song is-just truly magical.”

“I really don’t know what to say to that.” He says “except thank you, I don’t think I have ever heard it described that way.”

“Well everyone is different, and your welcome.” I smile.

The car came to a stop and I knew we had arrived.

Once we had gotten out of the car Jimmy tipped the driver and bid him farewell.

“Wait don’t you need to tell him when to pick us up again?” He shakes his head “no, because a limo is going to take the rest of the band out to Rodney’s after this. Can’t be subjugated too long.”

“God forbid Led Zeppelin show restraint.” I chuckle.

“Carful darling” He says opening the door for me “more smart remarks like that and I’ll have you over my knee.”

I laugh it off slightly surprised he would say something like that, considering he usually has a kind exterior.

He put his around my waist and growled in my ear “You look like a gypsy tonight darling, I want nothing more than to eat you up.”

I became weak in the knees thankful that his arms were around me keeping me up.

“And eat me you shall.” I whisper in his ear as we entered the premises.

Alrighty so while I’m thinking about it here’s basically every element from Beauty and the Beast that I adored

can I say how surreal it was to be in a theater packed with young girls of all ages wearing yellow dresses with their Belle barbies

not to mention all the adults and people my age who’ve been singing Be Our Guest for eternity were all so excited

it was almost like when The Force Awakens came out and Star Wars was alive again and everyone, old and new generations of fans, gathered together.... ya know what I’m talking about? where everyone in the room is buzzing with anticipation

the CGI wasn’t as terrible as y’all thought, y’all need to have a little faith sometimes lol

the casting was excellent!!

i know people have mixed feelings about Emma Watson playing Belle but I honestly wouldn’t have casted it any other way. She’s always been a women’s rights activist, a bookworm and a thinker, and a strong role model for young girls. and her favorite princess was always Belle I mean come on. and her singing voice was so incredible!! that was what I was most looking forward to in this movie and it did not disappoint

she also said in a buzzfeed interview that she imagines Belle would open the Beast’s library to the public and start a school!!! How rad is that?? HEADCANON ACCEPTED

shout out to Dan Stevens for waltzing in 10 inch stilts while wearing a 40 pound body suit

ok Luke Evans and Josh Gad must’ve thought they were in Dirty Dancing because they had the time of their lives

and Luke was pretty attractive. just sayin

overall, the cast was really diverse! not one but two interracial couples! and in general there were a lot of poc in the village featuring a wonderfully sweet librarian dude

Everything about Belle’s character was fantastic I’m not kidding

i think the town had such a consistent routine that she could precisely time when the morning rush started?

despite the village blatantly gossiping about her she was still so nice and polite to everyone

so??? much??? sass??? it was unreal??? When Gaston asked why she wouldn’t go out to dinner with him he assumed she had plans but she was just like “No...” and she didn’t even explain further how freakin savage she shot that boy down

(a few more examples bc this girl was on fire) “Why would I be startled? I’m talking to a candle” and “Is that a joke? are you making jokes now?” and my fav “’Maybe you just haven’t met the right man?’ ‘It’s a small village Gaston, I’ve met them all’”

this is Elizabeth Bennet level Jane Austen would be proud

they touched on how women were expected to have kids in their late teens/early 20s and she’s like “screw that” yeah girl smash that patriarchy

how on earth did it take me 17 years to realize she’s considered odd because she’s the only literate girl in the whole village???????? how did I, a history buff obsessed with the French Revolution, never make that connection before???? this isn’t specific to the new film but still I applaud it good job disney

she was an inventor!!! i don’t know if i’ve ever been happier than when i saw her solving equations and tinkering and making a washing machine so she can read and get chores done simultaneously. emma totally had something to do with this decision absolutely no doubt

she doesn’t ride her horse sidesaddle and that was like a huge faux pas for ladies back then (again, smashing the patriarchy one step at a time)

SHE WAS TEACHING ANOTHER SMOL GIRL HOW TO READ!!! THAT’S SO IMPORTANT AND PRECIOUS I’VE BEEN UNABLE TO THINK OF ANYTHING ELSE SINCE THAT MOMENT

she planned to escape the castle from the beginning and was really creative about it, and no matter what she always found some sort of weapon lying around lol (a random stick, a chair, a pitcher Belle what would you do with that) but she was always prepared to defend herself with somewhat of a plan and attempt at thinking ahead

She was really curious about the curse and asked questions about it to figure out this mystery herself

she was always problem-solving and trying to find a solution to situations and that was so cool girls need to see that strong female leads aren’t always the ones that can fight, but girls with wit and bravery

there was lots of nice background info on characters that otherwise wouldn’t exist, like Belle’s mom’s death, why Maurice chose to stay in that boring village and Adam’s dad being a jerk and turning him into a monster (no pun intended)

Mrs Potts giving us a reason why the entire castle was cursed, not just Adam. They didn’t do anything to stop Adam’s dad from corrupting him and man that’s some heavy stuff

I feel like each character, especially the servants, were so much richer and stronger and more complex, and the stakes were higher bc each time a rose petal fell they became less and less human

even the enchantress had a name and she was gorgeous?

they went pretty dark in this one... like something caused that tree to fall in Maurice’s path and back into an upright position. the wolves wouldn’t cross the gates because of some boundary. the way the whole castle shuddered with each drop of a pedal. i could go on... and the added character depth really helped that dark stuff too

THE MUSIC!!!! WAS SO GOOD!!! I’ve had the album on repeat for.... four days now and I’m not sick of it yet?? please send help

seriously, they did an amazing job. it was perfectly balanced w both old an new songs, and neither of them overshadowed the other. each song got it’s spotlight, they honored the old ones while including new original ones that were awesome (cough forevermore cough cough)

Gaaaaaastonnnnnnnnnnnn omg that sequence was awesome. honestly i think everyone in the theater tapped their foot when he was stomping and dancing on the tabletops

Belle was really good too to me because i’m a nerd for that set design

Days in the Sun is extremely underrated!! but yes, Forevermore is breathtaking it’s growing on me more and more each day

lots of rotating cinematography and spinning i’m a nerd i love it

the costume and set design.... holy crAP it’s stunning

i read somewhere that Belle’s casual getup has large pockets for her books and she has part of her skirt pinned up so she can ride Philipe easier and that’s beautiful

each scene was packed with tiny details that most movie makers overlook and I’m so impressed???? not just visually but there were so many sounds that truly made it feel real like in the village I’d occasionally hear a crying baby or a dog barking or just constant chatter and that’s stuff you’d expect to hear in a crowded village square

the little twinkling lights during the ballroom dance was probably my favorite i may have cried

No one ever say anything bad about Belle’s dress again IT WAS SO GORGEOUS it floated across the floor like a bundle of sunshine

and there were so many details in that scene? did anybody notice her gold earrings she wore they were wonderful

her hairstyles throughout the whole movie were so cute (esp at the end with that updo!! and that pretty flower dress I need it)

the historical accuracies??? unreal??

so much baroque architecture with all of the elaborate gold designs ahhh i love it

half of it looked like a rococo painting, the other half a neoclassicism painting

girls weren’t allowed to be educated so that’s why Belle was hated so much--and so cool--and ohhhh my mind is blown why did i not understand this until now

lol a giant chunk of France was illiterate at the time too so LeFou realizing that halfway through trying to spell Gaston was hilarious

actually the mob song in general is scarily accurate. what starts with a small discomfort turns into irrational fear which turns into extremism in crowds and they did the stupidest things like “hey there’s a monster that we’ve never seen or heard of and it’s never attacked us before but LETS KILL IT” seriously the French loved mobs

they included a lot more intimate moments w Belle and the Beast to build up their relationship more carefully

Belle almost in tears when she was in that library because honestly same girl

my favorite moment in the entire movie, although small, was when they were in the library during “Something There” and she just kept grabbing book after book and he was walking behind her holding this massive stack that was so cute

honorable mentions: when the Beast shook his head like the horse omg. and I freaking cackled when he threw that giant snowball at her face

when they were in Paris, and Belle figured out that her mother died of the plague and she said “let’s go home”

she just rode off while still wearing her ball dress

“no time to change gotta go save my pa i’m keeping this btw”

and then she strips down to her undergarments because they’re about to go after Adam and that’s the final straw nobody messes with him under her watch she has to save him and, sorry, but she won’t let a big bulky dress get in the way of that despite how beautiful it is

Belle participated in the climax fight scene she was not taking any of Gaston’s crap

and then Adam was like “stay there I’m coming” and she completely ignored him so she could step in if he needed her

the transformation scenes were amazing

LeFou’s character arc was surprisingly great! and I support him and his boyfriend

that one growl at the end... you know the one... I’m very confused why was that so sexy is that bad

there were so many moments where i got goosebumps and sudden tears from the swelling of the orchestra or a certain chilling line and i was just so moved by this movie

in every showing that i went to there was a massive applause from the crowd and i love it you deserve it disney

There was hardly an aspect that I disliked. Maybe more of Mrs Potts would’ve been nice, maybe Belle asking Adam to grow a beard was a little strange, maybe Ewan could work on his French accent a little more (don’t get me wrong I love this man but it could use a little more work... other than that his acting was superb). my complaints stop there! I honestly loved this film so much and I’d been pumped since I first heard about it back in 2015. It didn’t disappoint! that means a lot coming from a person who had insanely high expectations for it.
