After the war, there’s a lot of clean-up to do. Poe volunteered to go to First Order occupied worlds to help rebuild and rehabilitate. And wherever he went, she told him she would follow. And so she did.

Currently, they’re on the planet Corellia. After the First Order came in and took over, most of the families were pushed to the outskirts of the city. But now, the cities are beginning to grow again, and Poe’s just happy he can be part of the process.

And right now they’re at an orphanage. Or rather, in the process of building one. This is one of the more painful parts of the job. He isn’t really sure kids understand it most of the time. But so many of their parents had gone away to try and fight back. Hell, Corellia’s the home planet of both Solo and Wedge Antilles. They’re known for their pilots.

But it hurts. Because suddenly there’s kids that don’t have parents, and they only have each other. He just hopes the orphanage will help.

He turns to go grab something, and then he sees her. She’s kneeling in front of a little boy, waving a toy in front of him, making him smile and giggle as he goes to chase after it. It’s things like that, the way she so effortlessly can add her brightness to a dark situation, that made him fall for her.

And it’s then that Poe realizes he never told her. He’d thought about it, it always flashed through his head whenever he thought that a certain fight might be the last one, but he just couldn’t get himself to say it. He wasn’t sure where it would lead. Hell, he didn’t think there would be an end to the war most days.

But now it’s the end of the war, and she’s in front of him, looking bright as can be, and it almost feels like home. And it’s like it only hits him then that the war is over. It’s safe again. The universe is rebuilding. He can live a full life.

It’s then when she walks up to him, waving at the little boy as he runs to go play with some other children out front. She stands next to him, and softly puts her head on his shoulder. It’s an action Poe should be used to, with how touchy she is, but he’s not sure he’ll ever get over it.

“Did you ever think about it?” Poe asks suddenly, and he almost expects that she could read his thoughts, half expects her to reply to what he was thinking without clarification. She doesn’t.

“Think about what?”

“What you’d do? Y’know, after everything?” She sighs, and he glances over to see her watching the children playing in front of them.

“Didn’t really have time to.”

“Yeah,” Poe says, and he pauses for a moment. “Me neither.”

She moves away from him, and the absence of her touch makes Poe feel a bit cold, almost makes him want to pull her back, but he stays where he is while she moves in front to look at him.

And she’s furrowing her eyebrows, heading tilting to the side as she looks up at him. Her eyes flit over his face, and Poe’s almost sure she knows something he doesn’t.

“What’re you thinking about?” She asks finally.

“Just-“ He pauses again, “After-war things.”

“Poe, you know that you can tell me anything.”

“I know, it’s just-“

“Poe.”

There’s a beat of silence between them. His eyes are looking over her face, trying to find a way out, but words claw at his throat, begging to be said, and at some point, his heart decided it wanted them to be said too.

“I should’ve told you this earlier, but, you mean a lot to me. I never told you before because, I don’t know, I guess I was scared, but I don’t want to part ways with you, or leave you behind, or say goodbye just because the war’s over. You said you’d follow where I go but- I don’t want you to just follow. I want to be there by your side in every decision, in every moment. I want you.”

Poe lets a breath out, and then he finally takes a moment to look at her. She’s smiling, her brightness radiating out of her and making her look like the brightest star in the galaxy.

“Well it’s about time you said something,” She replies. And then she takes a step forward, taking Poe’s hand in hers and using her other hand to play with his hair.

It feels like heaven.

“You know, you could’ve said something too,” Poe says. She laughs, a bright, beautiful laugh.

“Now where’s the fun in that?”

When she finally leans up, pressing a short kiss to his lips, they hear a chorus of “gross!” and “eww” from the kids out front. And they laugh, before pulling away and getting back to work.
