come in, space cadet
i peeled my face from the cold, wet, glass i must’ve fallen asleep looking outside again like a kid watching sports through the windowfront of a store
that little blue marble mounds of green and brown i can obscure it with the warm white splotches of my breath fogging up the glass
i wonder what it’s like down there right now i imagine a deer trotting down a forest trail and an opossum hiding in a bush, its babies clung into it like fruits ripe for the picking maybe someone falling in love for the first time or a family photo being taken at this exact moment, cementing a core memory for everyone there i’m sure it’s nice
i’m so far away from the movement and noise of every day life but even up here, i think about quite often
because now that im at face with the largest thing that we can comfortably comprehend it’s comforting to remember the small stuff that i tend to forget
wait
“i think i see my house from here!”

In 1957, a Soviet street dog named Laika launched into space aboard Sputnik-2 and became the first animal to orbit the Earth.
This is her story.

August 19
On August 19, 1960, the Soviet satellite Korabl-Sputnik 2 launched with a passenger list including numerous plants, 40 mice, two dogs, and two rats. Thankfully, the saucer men who encountered the satellite were vegetarians, so the mice, dogs, and rats returned uneaten.

This is Kudryavka (little curly) who came to be known to the world as Laika (barker). Only recently I learnt her story. (It's a sad one)
She was a stray dog that used to live in Moscow. She was taken with several other stray dogs to be tested to be sent to the space.
All doggies were put through hard and uncomfortable tests. Like fitting sanitation devices to their pelvic area. They didn't like it.
Another dog "outperformed" her, but she (the other dog) had just recently given birth. So they chose Laika for her soft energy, and they chose a female because they were more docile.
They sent her with one meal, and oxygen for 7 days. Her heart rate tripled and her breath quadrupled by the noise and pressure from the flight.
She wasn't expected to come back. She was used to "test waters" before humans in space travel. She was also used because Russian's premier wanted to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Russian's Bolshevik revolution.
She didn't make it. They expected her to die of oxygen deprivation. She didn't. She died soon after launching when the temperature inside the spacecraft reached 90 degrees. Celsius I assume.
Other dogs were used later on. 71 between 1951 and 1966. 17 died. But all had some expectation of making it alive. All except Laika.
Some groups opposed to launching in Great Britain. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty and the Society for Happy Dogs. Also a group of dog lovers attached protest signs to their animals and marched outside United Nations in New York.
The soviet government lied for sometime saying she had made it alive. They wanted to say she was the first live living to be on a spaceship.
It was so wrong on so many level. The use of an animal for pure human ego purposes. Sending an animal to a certain death. Removing an animal from their natural environment.
But in addition, they abused their soft energy. They use it against the being, to put them in they worst of situations. So the softer the animal the most eligible. That still goes on.
Also they used the fact that she was a stray to abuse of her. A dog "no one" would miss.
This abuse and use of another life, of an earthling, another being; shows the degree of sickness of a society, the unbalance of humanity, the disconnection from all that we are part of.

Ella no sobrevivió.

afterglow - a rain song
subtle drips from the raindrops echo through my bedroom a rhythm that leaves you wanting more and hits at the exact moment you want it
like the tears at the end of a large fight the drizzles feel exhausted remnants, reminders of just minutes ago a storm is a person a person is a cloud
thundering, roaring, massive catharsis now the world teaches us about replenishment
prostrate oneself to the rain cycle, and learn to empathize with the world

Last pic of 'Kosmonavt', my piece for 'Shrine'. This is what was written next to the work: "'Kosmonavt' (meaning ‘cosmonaut’ in Russian) is a monument to Laika, the ultimate good dog. She was an unknowing martyr to space travel. Her skull, saturated in stars and nebulae sits eternally protected by celestial guard dogs." 🌔
