ough just relistened to mag 120. completely forgot how detailed jonah's description of (jon's dream of) jane was. and the way he spoke about the corruption with like,, a weird kind of fear-based understanding and respect? i might be losing my mind but i feel like he doesn't talk about the other dreams with nearly as much care and detail. like the image of jane prentiss' immolated corpse was beautiful to him.
girl who only knows parasight listening to a perfectly normal episode of the magnus archives: man, i'm getting real parasight vibes from this.

LOVE hearing Elias admit that he underestimated Martin. He did so well this season, this whole plan was his and it worked. I just love how everyone takes Martin at face value only for him to end up being THE most important player, surprising even the creators themselves. That's my boy!! Can't wait for him to basically become the co-protagonist next season
Martin does so much and he's so smart, honestly. He did such a good job.

MAG 120 Relisten
(a-mag-a-day people: I fucked up the tag on yesterday's post T_T If you still want to take a look at it, click here: MAG 119 Relisten)
Activity on my first listen: cutting apples.
There is static as soon as the statement starts.
"Desperate, he tries to throw the apple at his observer, but it is too late." Actually, have you tried throwing something really hard in a dream, or punching very hard? It's frustratingly not possible, it feels like you're moving underwater.
Hm, the static has died down a bit at some time, probably so it can audibly rise again at "It hurts."
Hm, it rises again to well audible background static when he leaves the MAG 65 dream and ventures on to those he cannot access anymore.
"The rain is still there, though it is empty. The long and desolate road, slick with the downpour; a police car’s lights flashing over the unmoving van. The doors are open, and the too-familiar statues stand either side of the well-worn wooden box. He looks around, his eyes scanning this forever road and the clouds of iron gray, looking for her, but she is not there." Daisy's dream is still here. Yet Leitner or Gerry, who are clearly dead, never come up. Daisy alive! (Hm, on second thought, we don’t know if Leitner would have come up at all since one, he died before Jon could go to sleep and two, he had read A Disappearance, maybe he would have never come up at all, even if he lived.)
Okay, so I think the static’s phasing in and out. Almost no static at Daisy's dream, though very strong at "I Am For You".
"There is nowhere in this universe that it would not blot out the sky." Just 40 more episodes!
"More than anything, the Archivist wants to look away, to turn his eye from her gentle sadness, from the disappointment in what she sees in him." Ouch...
ELIAS: "Hello, Inspector. Martin. I’m, uh, sorry to hear about Tim –" MARTIN: "Don’t." ELIAS: "And Daisy, I suppose –" MARTIN: "Don’t. You. Dare." ELIAS: "I suppose it’s some consolation Basira made it out. And John. More or less." I mean, they are vital for the audience to know what happened, but I love this little bits of information casually coming up in a conversation for us to fill in the blanks.
ELIAS: "There was simply too much to keep watching over. I only have two eyes, after all." Can't imagine how much of a problem a truly omniscient villain would have been. Even if here it's what he wanted anyway.
MARTIN: "Just be, be careful with him, all right, he can see things – put thoughts and – stuff into your head –" POLICE OFFICER: "Like I said: I’ve been briefed. And the situation is being monitored –" OMG, I just remembered! I was just thinking, you can be briefed all you want, but how would you keep someone like this out of your mind. Does anyone know Village of the Damned? (1995 by John Carpenter, based on the 1960s movie) Under weird circumstances, children with psychic powers were born in the eponymous village. Those children were not benevolent, they could make other people do stuff, get into their heads etc. The town doctor though found a way to keep them out of his head by imagining a brick wall and all this thoughts well hidden behind this it.
ELIAS: [ow] "Are those really necessary?" [SOUND OF ELIAS BEING APPARENTLY PUNCHED IN THE STOMACH] ELIAS: [gag, wheeze] I may not be one for revenge. But I take delight if someone does occasionally reap the fruit of their labor.
ELIAS: [wheeze] "Goodbye, Martin." [wheeze] "Be seeing you." Ha! Seeing!
PETER: "To be honest with you, Martin, I didn’t expect to be taking over the place so soon, or in quite such a state of disarray. But I’ll do my best to keep the place afloat." Ha! Afloat! Coming from a sea captain!
PETER: "Well, if you could send Melanie and Basira up to see me, I’d like to introduce myself." First time around I assumed Elias would be at the hospital when speaking of Jon's dreams. But I guess he wouldn't need to be physically near Jon and this line makes it quite clear, that they are in Elias' office.
PETER: "After that, I’ll put through a couple of weeks of paid leave for you all – I think giving everyone some space to try and deal with the loss of Tim and Daisy might do everyone some good." As someone who likes to deal with grief in isolation, I thought "Oh, how very nice of him". But that's not exactly what this is, given it's a Lukas.

Okay, I read the new dialogue in EX mode (120 spheres) and (SPOILERS AHEAD!!!)
Tldr, this feels very shoehorned in.
Not only does it upheave so much lore, it also just...doesnt make sense? Mags' dream of building a grand theme park AND him thirsting for galactic control doesnt add up -- Esp when taking the old lines into account (where he seems almost ANTSY to get his grubby paws on the Crown. Hell, hes willing to fight Landia, and then sacrifice his new friends when he failed.)
He says hes willing to work hard for this supposed dream of his, so where does his desire for more power fit into the picture? It'd make sense if he believes that the Crown would help him make this dream come true, but no. He SPECIFICALLY says "rule the universe". What do theme parks and ruling the universe have to do with each other?
If his dream was to build theme parks from the START, and it wasnt born from his desire to make Kirby his friend again, why the hell did he go through ALL THE TROUBLE to acquire the Crown?
Which, by the way, he STATES would make one rule the universe? (Not to mention his whole monologue explaining that this was his plan all along, and the universe will bow to him.)
Unless the amusement park lines were a big LIE to get Kirby's trust again after he slipped up and said some very sus things, I dont see how it all adds up. Its very confusing...

You just finished MAG 119 and are destroyed.
MAG 120:
Tumblr media
Senseless ranting-
Being such a late listener to TMA has been difficult since it's near impossible to avoid spoilers. I know some stuff bout the next few episodes but I-
I didn't know about the whole, Circus-Nikola-BOMB part. And I'm so glad I didn't. This episode just hit like a Semi truck and kept going.
And then, out of nowhere, MAG 120 just waltzed in with salt for my wounds and a knuckle sandwich to the face-
Jon's in a coma? Tim's dead? What about the others? Did they stop the ritual?
I'm so, so, sooo excited for the next season now and can't wait for what's next *happy gremlin sounds*

TMA Idea! (Spoilers for MAG 120-122)
I always used to imagine Jon with glasses, but I’m the later seasons I forgot to do that, so I came up with a solution for that.
Jon used to need glasses. REALLY needed them. Couldn’t see two feet in front of his own face without them. But after his coma? Just sorta… got better. Not only did The Beholding keep him alive when he definitely should’ve died, but it also healed his eyes while he was ‘resting!’ After all, The Beholding isn’t just going to have an Eldrich Eye Demon whose own eyes are fucked beyond repair.

i'm procrastinating getting ready for work so allow me to ramble about justified a little more. minor spoilers may be behind the cut, for my friends that didn't watch all six seasons in a week like i did 🙃
edit: this got kinda long, sorry. you've been warned.
despite what my late night, often drunken screaming would lead one to believe, i think justified is a genuinely fantastic show outside of just the dynamic of raylan and boyd. a lot of this, i think, comes from the fact that almost all the characters are very likeable and often pretty relatable. even the ones that are meant to be the "bad guys", and even when they're doing things that are, pretty objectively, terrible and bad. (lookin at you, mags bennet. i love you.) (i say almost all because i don't think this applies to quarles but i will get to that.)
before i started the show, based on what little i knew about it and from reading the small synopsis on hulu, i fully anticipated it to be a very copaganda-y experience. and like, that's not to say it isn't that at all? like it definitely is at times. but i think it is worlds away from the typical cbs procedural stuff. the characters have completely understandable motivations for their actions, even if those actions are extreme. it's obviously not perfect, but the way the show explores poverty, and how it is the driving factor in making these characters what they are, is pretty great. like, in a real world sense, do i think the things that boyd and mags and the other characters like them do are a cool fun time? no, clearly. but, from a narrative stand point i can sympathize with why they do them.
now, none of this applies to quarles, and not only do i not think that's a bad thing, i think it was intentional. quarles is a character that commits acts that even the other pretty extreme characters think are insane. and his "tragic" backstory reveal at the end of season 3 felt very "cool story, still murder" to me. couple this with the fact that he's this pompous, rich outsider coming into harlan, going into dive bars and ordering fucking pappy van winkle (VERY expensive, top shelf bourbon, i'm talking minimum $120 a bottle. i think their most expensive is $300) really puts him firmly into that over the top other category for me. quarles had like, serial killer vibes (well, slightly more than vibes tbh) which is so beyond anything the other characters get up to. and like, i think that's pretty cool. he reminded me a lot of jules pierre mau from the expanse, in the way that we were given maybe 10 minutes of mau seeming like he had some kind of ethical code, which was promptly forgotten when hybrid katoa happened and he went right back to turning chronically ill children into alien super weapons.
all that to say, justified is pretty fucking fantastic. well written, well acted, all around a great time.

A recent realization from a discussion in the replies during this relisten: Based on Dekker and Salesa's comments when writing to Gertrude, it's not just live statements that lead to the dreams, which means it must be a matter of the statement being given to the current Archivist. (The statements given to the assistants in MAG 100 clearly did not count.) This fits with Elias's reference to "his slim collection of gifted nightmares."
Lydia Halligan (MAG 74, "Fatigue") gave her statement on 8 June 2015, long enough after Gertrude's death (even assuming it was May and not March) that Elias could have appointed Jon by then. However, Lydia Halligan notably wasn't sleeping much, and died less than a month after giving her statement. So it's not unreasonable to think that Jon, shortly after starting as Archivist, had a handful of really weird dreams, but then they went away again, it's fine, probably just anxiety over the promotion, nothing to worry about...
(This timeline for when he started as Archivist would admittedly seem to be contradicted by the fact that there is one more written statement, which we haven't gotten to yet, which was given between "Fatigue" and "Alone", which also does not show up in the dreams. However, there is some slight timeline wonkiness in its description anyway, so make of that what you will.)
It truly is a question
Iirc the website statement in 123 is also one that was given during that in between time and Jon actually apologizes to the statement giver in the end which could either sound like he's apologizing for no one taking care of the statement until now OR perhaps apologizing for making the statement giver start to have the nightmares from now on
