The beautiful imagery within each grid is made up of overlapping butterfly wings in a circular format, like that of a spindle whorl, to represent the cycle of life and the close connection of my people to this land. Day Five:

That’s the end of week one at Kings Seat and the last day of the week saw lots of finds - pottery, crucible fragments and stone tools plus a few iron knife blades. These were mainly located around the hearth area in Trench 4. A lovely cannel coal spindlewhorl was found by Gordon one of our regular volunteers!

Work in Trench 6 continues with two hearths appearing here on the middle terrace. There’s a thick layer of hill wash to remove in Trench 6 which will hopefully reveal more structural evidence relating to these so we can understand what type of structure(s) the hearths would have formed a part of.

Trench 7 has got to a stage where the bank of the lowest enclosure has been revealed and recorded. The UHI students are now digging a section through it to understand its construction and get some dating material.

Andy from AOC gave the volunteers a talk on finds highlighting how the artefacts we are finding indicates the high status nature of this site. Lots of lively discussion ensued and we can’t wait to get back to the site next week to find more!

We will be back on Tuesday until Saturday next week - visitors welcome if you fancy a tour of the site.
