A nother day at the Azores island São Miguel😃 First we did visit a cave! Gruta do Carvão (coal cave) It is a ancient lava tube. This cave is located in Ponta Delgado. For a guided tour you have too book in advance. This #excursion is #popular. My self I send a short email to get a timeslot. The tour was fun and interesting but short for me. It was mostly listening to the story🙂 The lights💡 they placed made to place look great😃 Finally we went to the beach ⛱️ as well. My self I really wanted to swim in Atlantic Ocean 🌊 We ended up at praia do pópulo beach and I did go for a #swim. Sadly the waves 🌊where so high that just stayed in the sea a short time🕒 After it we just killed some time walking around and drying up. We went to Forte de São caetana and the art work As Mariolas. The artwork is seen in the first picture 😃 #lavetube #basalt #stalactites #stalagmites #speleological #lavabridges #lavaballs #spongylava #basaltoxide #silica #GrutadoCarvão #cave #grot #coalcave #lavacave #pontadelgada #beach #AtlanticOcean #praiadopópulo #AsMariolas #azores #azoren #saomiguel #vacatiovibes #travelblogger #travelphotography #wanderlust (bij São Miguel, Açores) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnfXzTVDoYN/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A Southern Washington Lava Tube, July 2023.
This cave is possibly the second-longest lava tube in North America. It's somewhat known by locals, so unfortunately bears the scars of visitation by an unknowing, uncaring public. Lava caves cannot clean themselves out, nor can they regenerate.
It's a more complex lava tube than most - it has at least three branching passages above the main channel. Two are meanders from when the flowing lava river was at a higher level, and another is a channel that branches off downstream. I cannot find a modern survey of it, so the true length of these branches and the cave itself is unknown to me. The entrance of the cave is steep, and the opening is small. The setting allows a moss and fern garden to grow green in the misty daylight until it is choked out by the dark.
This cave surprised me with how tall and narrow it is - ceilings are often in excess of 40 feet (~11 m), carving a winding void into the earth. The floor is very rugged, and made of breakdown (collapse debris) for most of its length. We never reached the end, unprepared for how long it would take to finish the remaining third of the cave. A return is in order after the thaw.

Some 📸 of a small cave near the National Road Volos-Neochori, behind the hotel in Malaki.
It starts with a small descending vestibule(about 20m long, 📸 9) and continues with the main chamber(about 50m long) which then narrows, a part of which is flooded with water(📸 2-4,8) and to pass across you need boots or you just get soaked up to the knee(it also has deep 🏊 spots however). In the main chamber there are countless 🦇bats🦇(Rhinolophus Ferrumequinum, 📸 5-6) and cave locusts(Dolichopoda Petrochilosi, 📸 7).
⚠️Great care to aspiring visitors, always with someone more experienced and special equipment and training in caving techniques are required! Also, part of the cave is flooded with water! ⚠️

“Finally, we need to notice that a number of caves contain evidence for stalactites, especially of the undulating ‘drapery’ kind, having been struck, though we cannot always be sure that this was done during the Upper Palaeolithic. These stalactites emit a deep booming sound when struck. In the Réseau Clastres in the foothills of the French Pyrenees, they have been struck by someone standing on the far side; someone entering the cave with only a lamp or burning torch would not easily see the percussionist, and the sound would swell and resonate from the darkness in enveloping waves.
The effect of rhythmic sound, especially drumming and chanting, is widely recognized as a means of contacting the world of spirits.”
—David Lewis-Williams, The Mind in the Cave: Consciousness and the Origins of Art
A cave can be a giant drum! I’ve always been awe-inspired by the cathedral-like acoustics of caves

Testing a speleothem with hydrochloric acid. The calcium carbonate present in the calcite of the rock reacts with this acid and produces bubbles, carbon dioxide gas, water, and calcium chloride.
