I feel a little bad (and also attacked) by @shittywinememes' last post about opening a sparkling wine so I opened a Lambrusco in her honor. Lambrusco, for those that dont know, is made from one of the eleventy bajillion Lambrusco varietals growing in Northern Italy. So, Quarentine bottle number whatever: Quaresimo Lambrusco Dell' Emilia, from La Collina. Yes, this is a Lambrusco, but with some quirks that make this bottle out of the ordinary. For one, this is an organic, biodynamic wine. For two, this is pretty dry as these wines go, at most 1% residual sugar. There's a whole philosophy behind biodynamic that is too long to get into for an Instagram post (and it's one I'm not 100 percent convinced makes a difference in the bottle, don't hate me folks), but what it boils down to is a human attempt to make the wine and harvest the grapes according to the natural cycle and rhythms of nature and the cosmos. In the glass, this wine is a bold, sharp garnet color. The bubbles are tiny slow, and generally scattered, after the initial pour. There is a slight reductive character to the nose, but it fades away quickly, replaced by intense earthy notes, along with strawberry, cherry, and pomegranate. The palate has notes of sour cherry, potting soil, blackberry, and pomegranate, with nice acidity. Again, it's not terribly fruit forward, making this a fun vintage; a far cry from the "terrible sweet wine" stereotype often associated with Lambrusco. Cigar pairing: a Macanudo, Dominican Republic. Not sure exactly which one this is, but the earthiness of this cigar is balanced bith by the earthiness in this wine, making the fruit notes more pronounced-but not sweet. Book pairing: The Two Towers. Hence the tree of Gondor glass, which was a gift from @autisticruthenian. I like this wine. Alfredo Bertolani’s Lambrusco Rosé is a delicious, light, and refreshing aperitif. It is cherry red in color and smells like strawberries and raspberries and violets with a touch of white pepper. On the palate it smacks of red berries, spices and flowers. This Lambrusco is delicate with a delicious combination of both fruit and acidity. Beralani’s Lambrusco is classified as a Reggiano Lambrusco, which is a dry Rosè sparkling wine made with 50% Salamino and 50 % Marani Lambrusco grapes that are soft pressed with a short maceration of 7 days followed by temperature-controlled fermentation. Refermentation is performed using the Charmat wine making method which produces a light and refreshing sparkler at 11.5 % alcohol. The Bertolani winery was established in Scandiano, Emilia Romagna, Italy, in 1925 by Alfredo Bertolani. His success was a product of his passion for grapes and his knowledge of the terrain and territory. Family-owned by the fourth generation, they make delicious Lambrusco wines. Scandiano lies in the south, at the foothills of the Reggio Emilia province. Bertolani’s grapes come from hillside vineyards and foothill areas where soil is fine with high levels of clay and lime. The vineyards in the hills are old vines that create wines with a interesting character and are more structured and delicious with intense fruity notes. Lambrusco is not just one grape variety or wine. It is a family of grapes and each has its own characteristics. The are many styles of Lambruscos that use the various Lambrusco grapes varieties in a number of blended combinations. That being said, Lambrusco is always a red sparkling wine, typically dry in style, fruity in flavor, sometimes savory, with good acidity, and tannic structure.
