I feel a little bad (and also attacked) by @shittywinememes' last post about opening a sparkling wine so I opened a Lambrusco in her honor. Lambrusco, for those that dont know, is made from one of the eleventy bajillion Lambrusco varietals growing in Northern Italy. So, Quarentine bottle number whatever: Quaresimo Lambrusco Dell' Emilia, from La Collina. Yes, this is a Lambrusco, but with some quirks that make this bottle out of the ordinary. For one, this is an organic, biodynamic wine. For two, this is pretty dry as these wines go, at most 1% residual sugar. There's a whole philosophy behind biodynamic that is too long to get into for an Instagram post (and it's one I'm not 100 percent convinced makes a difference in the bottle, don't hate me folks), but what it boils down to is a human attempt to make the wine and harvest the grapes according to the natural cycle and rhythms of nature and the cosmos. In the glass, this wine is a bold, sharp garnet color. The bubbles are tiny slow, and generally scattered, after the initial pour. There is a slight reductive character to the nose, but it fades away quickly, replaced by intense earthy notes, along with strawberry, cherry, and pomegranate. The palate has notes of sour cherry, potting soil, blackberry, and pomegranate, with nice acidity. Again, it's not terribly fruit forward, making this a fun vintage; a far cry from the "terrible sweet wine" stereotype often associated with Lambrusco. Cigar pairing: a Macanudo, Dominican Republic. Not sure exactly which one this is, but the earthiness of this cigar is balanced bith by the earthiness in this wine, making the fruit notes more pronounced-but not sweet. Book pairing: The Two Towers. Hence the tree of Gondor glass, which was a gift from @autisticruthenian. I like this wine. Thoughts and Tasting notes for the 2018 Il Gruccione from the Lugana DOC, for #winestudio.... (First off, as a bird guy, I frigging love this label, and the story of these birds returning every year. Bee-eaters are awesome.) The nose of the opens with lemon rind, limestone, orange blossom, green apple, pear, acacia blossom, apricot, flint, and seasalt. The palate is filled with deeply satisfying acidity; racing and mouthwatering in nature. It is lighter-bodied than I expected, but still qualifies as a Medium-bodied white wine for me. There is flinty and saline minerality, intermingling with lemon peel, apricot, green apple, acacia flower, and that mouthwatering acidity. Overall, It is perfect for a warm day in the Arizona high country. Pairing...hmm.. This wine works great with the tiny little Hoyo de Monterey cigars sent to me by my friend, but I want this withwith a charcuterie board. An entire charcuterie board, with all of the cured meats. *Ron Swanson intensifies* Some final thoughts: I'm not sure why this grape was EVER known as a Trebbiano varietal before becoming known as Turbiana; this is so completely different than anything I've tasted in the Trebbiano wheelhouse. The 2018 Il Gruccione is definitely among the best Italian white wines I've ever tasted, period. Oh, the personification of this wine? Remember when Legolas (in the books) sings the Song of the Sea, after the battle at the Black Gates? Yeah. Today's wine is something a bit more local in nature: the 2014 Buena Suerte from @callaghanvineyards. This is a full-bodied red blend of 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Petit Verdot, 19% Tannat, and 17% Cabernet Franc, all from the Sonoita AVA in Southeastern Arizona. Kent Callaghan is well-known for his skill and knowledge here in Arizona, and all his accolades are well-earned. He's also an all-around awesome dude, and one of the founders of the @arizonavigneronsalliance. Aromas of black cherries, pencil shavings, juicy plums, black olives, sandalwood, toasted pecans, wild iris and tangerine form the nose, intermingling with just a hint of cedar smoke. The palate of the 2014 Buena Suerte ("good luck," or "fair chance" in Spanish) is, in a word, savory. Black cherry and rich plums continue, intermingling with blackberry, savory herbs, briny green olives, cedar, cigar wrapper, graphite, and earth. There's a fair amount of leathery tannins still present here; I'm inclined to agree with Kent's assessment that this wine will age without issue until 2027, possibly longer. The 2014 Buena Suerte is a stellar pairing with the cigar I've chosen today, the Grunt, from Line of Duty Cigars. This cigar is on the mild side, with a Nicaraguan Sun Grown wrapper. The filler is also Nicaraguan, and the binder is Ecuadorian. This is a fun combo, providing an easy smoke with mild flavor notes (earth, vanilla, graphite, almonds, and chamomile) that plays well both with the tannins and the fruit notes of the Buena Suerte. I won this cigar from a recent online auction from @skallywag_cigars; their humidor is well worth a visit if you're in Old Town Scottsdale.
