#soy phytoestrogens implicated in protecting bone mineral density
Text
Went back into my grad school notes for a minute...
If you lose estrogen (e.g. from oophorectomy, or aromatase for cancer treatment): you see a rapid decrease in bone density
Increased muscle mass is why men have more bone mineral density than women. The tug and pull of muscle on bones. Men have higher muscle mass, so they have more tug and pull of muscle on bones.
Estrogen—yes, estrogen—is significantly important for bone density in men. Male with a genetic mutation of aromatase did not make estrogen. So he had no estrogen. When given estrogen, his BMD increased. Estrogen is critically important for male bone function and mineralization.
Hormone Replacement Therapy: Oh no! 25% increase in breast cancer due to HRT! But, this means per 10,000 women, that means 38 got strokes/CHD, only 30 got more cancer. It’s most likely high progestin that was the culprit. Women with NO history of CVD had NO increase in CVD on HRT.
Women with NO uterus had no risk. Read the publications. Those with no uterus are just on progestin.
You have to give estrogen and progestin simultaneously because progestin causes blood vessels to shrink and endometrial lining comes off in normal menstruation. You have to give progestin to prevent endometrial hyperplasia, so they don’t end up with endometrial cancer.
