also, if you’re unfamiliar: christian science is one of the many weird offshoots of christianity that formed in the u.s., in this case founded by a woman named mary baker eddy in the 1880s, with the basic premise that anyone can heal through prayer the way jesus christ did.

a lot of people say christian science is a cult. i don’t think this is necessarily true? it probably was at the time of its founding, but mbe has been dead for so long that there isn’t really a charismatic leader or a mission of exploitation, so it’s genuinely just a religion...albeit a very fucked up one.

that said:

“christian science practicioners” exist to help you pray instead of going to the doctor if you’re sick or hurt. they charge obscene amounts of money, but it’s likely because they aren’t allowed to have any sources of income other than being a practicioner, if they want to be “licensed” by the church. they also can’t give you treatment if you’re seeing an actual medical professional, or if you’re on any form of medication.

“christian science nurses” exist if you need medical care. except they aren’t required to have any sort of actual medical training, often refuse to work with you if you aren’t also working with a practicioner, and often make things worse by not knowing what’s going on

the church puts out weekly “lessons” that are selections from the bible and “science and health with key to the scriptures,” which is the accompanying text mbe wrote, and the foundation of the religion. these cost a lot of money, and they change weekly! this isn’t even getting into the financial incentive to keep being a christian scientist, especially as a young adult. there are organizations that will give you scholarship money (in the average amount of $4000) just for being a christian scientist. there are “asher houses” around the country for cs university students that charge way cheaper rent than any properties nearby, and often have much more flexible leases. cs organizations are always hiring, and the qualifications are minimal because they really don’t want to hire people who aren’t christian scientists. if you’re raised in this community, it’s really tempting to keep taking advantage of all of that--and is the trade-off of going to church, or cs events, really that bad?

there’s also an element of community that’s really hard to shake. cs summer camps exist, as do cs boarding schools, and a cs university. a lot of people just funnel through all of those, you end up knowing everyone your age because there’s so few christian scientists left in the us, and you typically end up becoming really good friends with them

this is because the way cs teaches you to think is so fucked up. you’re taught that the world isn’t real. everything around you, matter itself, does not exist. you don’t exist. your pain especially doesn’t exist. it’s just an illusion, and not only can you work through it, but you should

i will give it this: it’s probably the most “liberal” of the american christianity offshoots, in that it’s aggressively feminist, being founded by a woman who had strong opinions about women’s equality.

it is, however, very white feminist. while mbe was anti-slavery, she also uses her holy book to declare that Black people being freed from slavery was just the first step in freeing all mankind from the slavery of the material world. yikes.

a lot of christian scientists put up a very good front of intellectualism. however, a lot of them also lie wildly to make the science match their religion--and a lot of cs kids fall for it!!! if a christian scientist ever tries to talk to you about quantum mechanics, neuroscience, or physics in general, doubt them very heavily.

keep in mind that all of this is kind of terrible. but. there are a lot of amazing people who practice christian science. i’m still friends with a lot of them. some people have had genuinely scientifically impossible experiences being cured of terminal illness (there’s a lot of compelling cancer stories) or dramatic injuries, and while those numbers don’t come anywhere near the numbers of people who christian science doesn’t work for, they still exist, and they’re still very compelling. i also know a lot of people who really appreciate the spiritual perspective it provides. it’s very complicated, and far be it from me to condemn everything about it and everyone who practices it

Today is 54th Engineer’s Day in India, being celebrated every year on 15th September to commemorate the Birth Anniversary of Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visveswaraya ( 1860-1962 ) .

1. The theme of Engineer’s day in India, this year, in

2021 is “ Engineers For SKILL DEVELOPMENT & Employment to Combating COVID “ .

The key words of the above theme are : Engineers ; Skill Development; Employment; & Combating COVID .

Here , I am reminded of the following words of Alvin Toffler ,

“ One of the most highly developed SKILLS in contemporary Western Civilisation is DISSECTION: the split-up of problems into the smallest components. We are good at it .So good we often FORGET TO PUT THE PIECES TOGETHER AGAIN.

This SKILL is perhaps finely honed in science. There we not only ROUTINELY BREAK PROBLEMS down into bite-sized chunks and mini chunks , we then very often ISOLATE each one from its environment by means of a useful pick . We say “ CITERIS PARIBUS “ - all other things being equal. In this we can ignore the complex interaction between our problems & the rest of the universe. “

When the august body of Institution of Engineers ( India ) have set the question paper to write , say , an essay on ‘VARSHA WRITU’ , I must stick to the topic ...rather than deviating to write an essay whimsically on ‘VASANT WRITU’ endangering myself to attract negative marking ( at 75th year of my age resonating with Amrit Mahotsav of India’s Independence, I am no longer an evergreen brilliant student as Rajendra Prasad to be honoured with decorated remarks, ‘examinee is better than the examiner’ on my answer sheet ! )

Seeking an unqualified apology from the Council of Management, Institution Of Engineers (India ) , it’s my earnest request to them to relook at the rationale behind selecting the theme every year in an ad hoc manner . Perhaps, they are still guided by the legacy of Lord Chelmsford who inaugurated IEI in 1920 rather than to be inspired by ‘father of our engineering fraternity’ , Sir M. Visveswaraya who provided us an appropriate compass suited to India’s needs through his magnum opus ‘RECONSTRUCTING INDIA’ ( published around the same time line , 1920 ) . Here are some instances of the past themes of IEI on which we deliberated during past years after years. Such practices may fulfil our routine duties merely as event managers rather than serving any meaningful Engineering purpose barring some exceptions.

Yes, Music & Dances , Cultural Programs , Good Food & Laughter with Exchanging pleasantries on Engineer’s Day Celebration MUST BE essential for recharging our body , mind & soul . Looking back on Themes in

2020 was “Engineers For Self-reliant India” ;

I don’t know about the outcome, recommendations of deliberations at hundreds of local Centres sent to Headquarters & to various Govts in Power for taking subsequent actions by them to enhance the serious concerns of Engineering Fraternity.

1. Reverting back to the theme of 2021 , let’s know the origin of the word , ‘ENGINEER’ & ‘SKILL’ . These two words are complementary to each other. What is an Engineer ? Let’s ask ourselves with the true spirit of the following lines of Mirza Ghalib :

har ek baat pe kahte ho tum ki tū kyā hai tumhīñ kaho ki ye andāz-e-guftugū kyā hai

( “ हर एक बात पे कहते हो तुम कक तू क्या है

तुम्ह ीं कहो कक ये अींदाज़-ए-गुफ़्तुगू क्या है“ )

And ...then... by Invoking Sir M. Visveswaraya , his spirit would instantly guide ...echoing through the next lines of Mirza Ghalib :

Sir MV’s brilliance was unexceptional - limited not only to ‘technical’ competence of an ‘engineer’ - as being perceived by today’s generation of politicians, administrators , common man & other professionals . Sir MV was a divine towering personality possessing the finest quality of a Statesman, a visionary, an administrator , an economist & a planner who sowed the seed & vision

of Planned Economy that laid the foundation of Planning Commission ( rechristened by Modi Government as NITI AAYOG in1914 ) .

Not only Mahatma Gandhi or Pandit Nehru sought Sir MV’s advice on important occasions..but..royal kings & rulers , great leaders & eminent industrialists , professionals from all walks of life in India & developed nations solicited his invaluable guidance till he was alive .

I am pained to find ...that...our own Engineering Fraternity , by & large , have ‘bonsai’ed their unlimited capabilities reducing themselves to become ‘HMV’s of their mediocre bosses .

Lord Hanuman didn’t realise what wonders he can do till Jamwant awakened him to realise his real divine power .

In the following paragraph, I would try to illustrate the real meaning of the word , “ENGINEER” co-relating with “SKILL” as depicted in scriptures & archeological evidences . May this motivate our all friends.

The word “ENGINEER” has Latin Root. It is derived from the Latin word , INGENIARE ( meaning : to create , generate , contrive , devise ) & INGENIUM ( cleverness) .

GENE : ( to create , to invent , or ..bring forth )

From the Proto - Indo - European ( PIE ) & RIGVEDA scriptures dating back to [ 4500 to 2500 BC ] , the above meaning of INGENIARE holds true.

According to Encyclopaedia Britannica , first recorded “Engineer “ was Imhotep who designed Step Pyramid at Saqqarah , Cairo ( 2750 - 2656 BC )

: erected some time around 2550 BC.

From the findings & records of Indus Valley Civilisation, Bronze Age , South Asia ( 3300 BCE - 1300 BCE ) , we do have evidences of Engineer’s Brilliant inventing capabilities.

In spite of all that , it’s sad that ....Engineers’ due is yet to be recognised by any Government in Power unless they choose to wear another cap as bureaucrats inducting themselves through Civil Services Examination or fight an election to become MLAs / MPs & Ministers .

In India , generally speaking, a Teacher or a Doctor of excellence has to wear additional cap of some important constitutional post , only then their Birth Anniversary would be celebrated as Teacher’s Day or Doctor’s Day . Perhaps, BharatRatna Sir Mokshgundam Visveswaraya was an exception whose birthday is celebrated as Engineer’s Day .

On this auspicious day , I urge the Political Masters , specially, Hon. Prime Minister of India , to compulsorily include these three books authored by BharatRatna Sir M . Visveswaraya viz. “PLANNED ECONOMY”; “RECONSTRUCTING INDIA” & “MEMOIRS OF MY WORKING LIFE” in the curriculum of all Universities at Graduation levels under New Education Policy ( NEP ) & renaming the NITI AAYOG as VISVESWARAYA AAYOG inducting the Vice Chairperson, Member Secretaries & Members’ Posts from amongst the Brilliant Minds selected from the panels of TOP 10 Ranked Institutions of India for inculcating a fervour of meritorious & Innovative Policy needed for AATMANIRBHAR BHARAT .

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate

Walaikum assalam,

There are two issues here:

a) The ruling

b) Understanding two key concepts:

i) The nature of good and bad; ii) The nature of our slavehood to Allah.

A. The Ruling of Making Dua for Dead Non-Muslims

There is a useful summary of this in two entries of al-Mawsu`a al-Fiqhiyya (Kuwait):

Seeking forgiveness for a non-Muslim

The jurists agree that seeking forgiveness for a non-Muslim is prohibited. However, if one seeks forgiveness for a non-Muslim hoping that they become Muslim and thus be forgiven then it is permitted according to the Hanafi scholars [f: because they understood the prohibition to refer to seeking forgiveness for them while they remained in their state of disbelief, which Allah has explicitly stated that He will not forgive, if they were aware of the truth]

In order to understand the rulings of the Shariah, we must understand two key concepts:

a) The nature of good and bad; b) The nature of our slavehood to Allah.

The first concept: The nature of good and bad

The position of Sunni Islam is that good and bad are not determined by reason but only by revelation, and therefore only known through the Shariah.

The mind’s role is not to determine what is good and bad or right and wrong, but, rather, to understand and implement the rulings of Allah Most High, as contained in the Shariah of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace).

This was explained by the great 20th Century Egyptian master of the science of legal methodology (usul al-fiqh), Shaykh Abd al-Wahhab Khallaf, as translated by Shaykh Nuh Keller in his Reliance of the Traveller:

a1.0 - THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOOD AND BAD

a1.1 - (Abd al-Wahhab Khallaf:) There is no disagreement among the scholars of the Muslims that the source of legal rulings for all the acts of those who are morally responsible is Allah Most Glorious.

a1.2 - The question arises. Is it possible for the mind alone, unaided by Allah’s messengers and revealed scriptures, to know rulings, such that someone not reached by a prophet’s invitation would be able through his own reason to know Allah’s rule concerning his actions? Or is this impossible?

a1.3 - The position of the Ash’aris, the followers of Abul Hasan Ash’ari, is that the mind is unable to know the rule of Allah about the acts of those morally responsible except by means of His messengers and inspired books.

For minds are in obvious disagreement about acts. Some minds find certain acts good, others find them bad. Moreover, one person can be of two minds about one and the same action. Caprice often wins out over the intellect, and considering something good or bad comes to be based on mere whim. So it cannot be said that an act which the mind deems good is therefore good in the eyes of Allah, its performance called for and its doer rewarded by Allah; or that whatever the mind feels to be bad is thus bad in the eyes of Allah, its nonperformance called for and its doer punished by Allah.

a1.4 - The basic premise of this school of thought is that the good of the acts of those morally responsible is what the Lawgiver (syn. Allah or His messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace)) has indicated is good by permitting it or asking it be done. And the bad is what the Lawgiver has indicated is bad by asking it not be done. The good is not what reason considers good, nor the bad what reason considers bad. The measure of good and bad, according to this school of thought, is the sacred Law not reason (dis:W3).

a1.5 - According to this school, a person is not morally obligated by Allah to do or refrain from anything unless the invitation of a prophet and what Allah has legislated have reached him (n:w4 discusses Islam’s relation to previous prophets’ laws). No one is rewarded for doing something or punished for refraining from or doing something until he knows by means of Allah’s messengers. What he is obliged to do or obliged to refrain from.

So whoever lives in such complete isolation that the summons of a prophet and his Sacred Law do not reach him is not morally responsible to Allah for anything and deserves neither reward nor punishment.

And those who lived in one of the intervals after the death of a prophet and before a new one had been sent were not responsible for anything and deserve neither reward nor punishment.

This view is confirmed by the word of Allah Most High.

“We do not punish until we send a messenger” (Koran 17:15).

The second concept: The nature of our slavehood to Allah

Allah Most High explained that the only purpose and meaning for the existence of humanity is to worship Allah:

“I created the jinn and humankind only that they might worship Me.” (Qur’an, 51.56)

“Slavehood ('ubudiyya) is manifesting abasement. Worship (`ibada) is more emphatic, for it is the limits of abasement, and no one is deserving of it except the one who has absolute granting, which is Allah Most High. This is why he said, “That you not worship other than Him.” [Qur’an, 17.23]

Worship is two types:

1. Worship by compulsion

[f: This is the state of everything in relation to its Creator; its very indigence and need to Allah in terms of creating and sustaining it is worship.]

2. Worship by choice.

[As for slavehood, this is various types, including:]

a) One who is legally a slave. [f: That is, not free.]

b) One who is a slave in terms of existence. This slavehood is only to Allah. [f: And it is the essential reality of all creation.]

c) One who is a slave by worship and service. In this, there are those who are slaves to Allah with sincerity, and whose whose slavehood is to this life and its concerns. [Isfahani, Mufradat Alfadh al-Qur’an, 542, abbreviated]

Slavehood to Allah is not only to pray five times a day and to perform other acts of worship. Rather, it is to submit to Allah in all matters, outwardly and inwardly, as He as commanded us to, by following the guidance of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace), in whose obedience lies the obedience of Allah.

The Prophet’s Guidance Has Been Preserved

This guidance has been preserved, as Allah promised, in the Shariah of Islam, as encapsulated in the methodology and understanding of the Sunni path, and its scholars, who are the inheritors of the Prophet and those regarding whom the Beloved of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) said,

“There shall always remain a group in my Community who are manifest on the truth, unaffected by those who oppose them, until the command of Allah comes than they are resolute on this.” [Mentioned with numerous similar wordings by Bukhari, Muslim, and the other major hadith collections.]
