Pua Aloalo (Yellow Hibiscus)
Tumblr media
traveltoparadise.com/state-flower-of-hawaii-the-hibiscus/ Yellow Hibiscus flowers are showy, fragrant, and exotic… just like Hawaii! It’s no wonder the hibiscus was selected as our state flower.
The hibiscus flower has been honored in Hawaii since well before we officially became part of the 50 states. It was first adopted as a territorial emblem in the 1920s because of its beauty and prevalence throughout Hawaii. In 1959, when Hawaii achieved statehood, the hibiscus came along as its symbol.
However, it wasn’t until 1988 that the native yellow hibiscus officially became Hawaii’s state flower. Prior to that date, you would see all types and colors of hibiscus used to represent Hawaii, but since then you will see the yellow hibiscus represented most often (such as on postcards, travel brochures, etc). Not only are hibiscus flowers beautiful, but they are useful and versatile as well. Here are some cool hibiscus tips:
For a unique taste of hibiscus, try making a hibiscus syrup and then mixing a little with your favorite champagne for a unique and refreshing treat. The flowers themselves are edible and can be eaten candied or dried. Hibiscus tea is extremely popular. The flowers are known for their health benefits: hibiscus is high in vitamin C and reported to help lower blood pressure. You can use hibiscus to make paper. Hibiscus flowers also attract beautiful butterflies and and bees, of course.
If your resort has hibiscus plants about, stop for a moment to admire their beauty and usefulness as a plant!

Bang Saen beach
Tumblr media
Bang Saen is a town that is famous throughout Thailand. It is the closest pleasant beach getaway spot from Bangkok as well as any provinces north of Chonburi. Most visitors typically come from provinces to the north and northeast of Chonburi. It is much closer, cheaper and is less hassle than Hua Hin’s beaches or Pattaya’s beaches.
Bang Saen is a sleepy town during the weekdays but it turns into a fantastic city on the weekends. The town is a host to a major university, Burapha University. During the day, most of the people you will see are students from the university. On the weekends, travellers, families or groups of friends, come from surrounding areas or other provinces in Thailand to spend the day at the beach.
Nearly all of the visitors to Bang Saen are Thai. There are foreign tourists all year round but most of the tourists are still local because when comparing "Bang Saen" with any other beach around ("Pattaya or "Satthahip beaches") "Bang Saen" the the cheapest beach to travel. Though foreigners are small in number, there still is a Scandinavian village in Bang Saen. There are probably around 200-300 Scandinavians living there and maybe 100-200 foreigners more on top of that. Most of the foreigners who live in Bang Saen work as Teachers in the Burapha’s University or as local guides. For this reason, many menus and shop names are bilingual.
There are few services in English, but maybe 10-20% of people speak at least basic English. However, professional people generally always speak English well. But nearly everyone will try to help you if you speak directly to them. Don’t be afraid to talk to anyone to get some help, Body language and any other communication skill may help you out from any trouble situation. if they can’t help you they might find someone who can speak English. In a town like Bang Saen, it’s very normal to approach anybody for help.
All of the restaurants in the shopping centre, Laem Thong, have bilingual (Thai-English) menus. Nearly all of the restaurants along the beach have English menus.

Helen Wisner Muller, Albumen Carte de Visite, Circa 1861
Tumblr media
"W. J. Moulton, Photographer, 116 & 118 Water St., El Mira, N.Y." To see detail shot where you can see her delightful smile, replete with teeth: www.flickr.com/photos/60861613@N00/6380091443/in/photostream
Helen M. Wisner (1838-1920) was the daughter of Chemung County, New York, Judge John Wheeler Wisner (1801-1852), of which much can be read here: www.joycetice.com/books/1879b283.htm, and Mary Ann Butler (1812-1870). The couple had married in 1835. Helen was the Judge’s second child, having an elder half-sister Frances E., and a younger sister, Eliza (b. 1845), as well as a younger brother, Gabriel (1847-1889). The Wisners were descendants of Henry Wisner, and general in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. Helen’s grandson, Lawrence Muller Hunter, would go on to apply for membership in the Sons of the American Revolution in 1927, citing his pedigree back to Henry.
(As an interesting aside, Frances Wisner married Henry Loftie in 1861, who is renown as a maker of fishing lures. You can read about him here: www.oldfishinglure.com/henryloftielures.htm.)
Helen married the lawyer William Thomas Lawrence Muller (19 Jan 1841-5 Jan 1891) on 8 December, 1858, in Elmira, New York. He was the son of Adrian Herman Muller (1792-1886) and Catharine Schermerhorn Abeel (1799-1894).
Helen and William had two daughters, Ida Mary (1865-1946), and Kate (b. 1869).
Muller went on to become a judge and a commissioner on the New York Court of Claims and, his obituary notes, "was a close personal friend of the governor, and was his ally and advisor." The obituary states that he died of a blood clot traveling to his brain. He was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn. One must assume that Helen is also buried there. She appears to have outlived him, but is not mentioned in his obituary. She also does not appear with the family on the 1880 census, and I cannot as yet locate the family on later censuses. Also unknown is for whom Helen is wearing deepest mourning in this image. It would have to be a very close relative.

“…and upon you the Peace”

(I saw this on a poster inside a shop window of a travel agency at Munich Airpoirt. The Bokeh bubbles are window reflections from the Christmas Market between Terminal 1 and 2. From my point of view, both, the Oriental mood and the Christmas signs work together pretty well 🙂

Return to Valley View 2012
I can honestly say that I never expected to get remarkable snow and light at this exact spot TWO years in a row. But I guess Yosemite and Mother Nature smiled on me again. No matter how many times I return to Yosemite, this spot always makes me just stand in awe and wonder at the beauty of this place. It truly is beyond words, and the fresh snow just makes this place one of my favorite places on earth. Seriously, if you have not been here in the winter, call your travel agent now, and make plans for 2013. It is that kind of place!!
P.S. Check out and LIKE Scott Pudwell Photography on Facebook to follow some more of my recent work!
