How would the mercs react to being gifted soup? Just a thermos of soup, appearing in front of their room's door every so often. It's a different kind every time and everyone on the base is suspect.

Scout: he takes it into his room, a bit confused mostly. for a moment, he thinks it must be from his Ma but there's not way she'd be able to ship him soup. he takes a sip and it's definitely not his Ma's! it's nowhere near as good as she makes soup, but he'll still take it. he's just disappointed it wasn't from her

Soldier: he lines everyone up to march in front of them until he gets answers! he wants to know who's been leaving him soup right this instant! not because he's mad, no.. rather it's the best damn soup he's ever tasted and he intends to give them a medal and appoint them the soupmaker on the base from now on

Pyro: they're excited! soup is their favorite because it's warm and easy to drink through their gasmask. they immediately take it in and enjoy it while they're going about their day! they set it outside when they're done with a handmade card, covered in hearts and glitter because they REALLY want whoever it is to know they appreciate it

Demoman: he's skeptical. he'll take the first thermos inside to think about it for a bit while he studies his cryptid books, or makes his bombs, or start working on that "anti-Scout-barging-into-my-room" device Spy requested he make with whatever chemicals he has laying around. (he suggested a lock but Spy wanted something stronger.) after some time, he's hungry and will give into temptation and drink it

Heavy: the first two times, he takes the thermos into his room to be nice but doesn't drink it. he debates having Spy or Medic test it for him, but sneaks out to empty and wash it before leaving it back outside his door. but when it keeps happening, he starts to feel bad about wasting it and actually starts eating/drinking it. he still washes the thermos each time before leaving it outside

Engineer: he assumes someone on the base is just being real nice, so of course he'll take it! it makes for a good meal while he's closed himself up in his workshop to work on things. he always sets the thermos back outside when he's done with a thank-you note tied to it

Medic: he always takes a sample to run tests on first before he deems it safe to consume. by the time he's finished and finds out it's perfectly okay, it's gone cold and he can't be bothered to go all the way upstairs to reheat it so it sits in the fridge "for later" and he promptly forgets all about it

Sniper: free food!! he gives it a sniff test and that's all he needs to determine whether or not he should go bottoms up with it. the answer is always yes, he will. maybe one of these days it'll catch up to him and he'll regret it but until then nothing will stop him

Spy: he wouldn't trust this if his life depended on it. it goes immediately down the drain with the most frustrated scowl anyone has ever seen because this is the fourth time this week this has happened and he's getting tired of it! he starts setting up cameras to catch whoever is doing it

Core Mastery Improvement

In order to move up the ranking table in Mastery, you must be able to understand the difference in processing ingredients of vastly different properties according to different Methods, and be able to catch the timing just right for them all. Roleplay is possible, with further details possibly changing the difficulty modifier subject to GM approval. e.g. "remove the cabbage when the leaves have gone limp".

Increasing Mastery can be done partially through experimentation, or through watching other, more skilled practitioners, albeit up to a certain point. This does not retroactively count, so if a player watches a Perfect practitioner do a method and they're at F, it only counts as increasing mastery to D, without any other perks that affect this.

METHOD MASTERY

At None to F, players must either watch someone who has at least F skill in this method 3 times, OR perform a successful roll of the method 2 times.

From F -> D, players must watch someone who has at least D skill in this method, AND/OR perform a successful roll of the method 3 times.

From D to C, players must either watch someone who has at least C skill in this method, AND/OR perform a successful roll of the method 4 times, each time WITH different propertied ingredients (minimum one staple, one main, one vegetable/fruit)

From C to B, players must perform a successful roll 6 times, each time WITH a unique combination of different propertied ingredients AND at least 2 different equipment.

From B to A, players must perform a successful roll 8 times, each time WITH a unique combination of 4+ unique, differently propertied, ingredients AND at least 2 different equipments AND at least 1 unfamiliar ingredient per cook.

From A to Perfect, players must perform a successful roll 10 times, each time WITH a unique combination of 5+ unique, differently propertied ingredients AND at least 3 different equipments AND at least 2 unfamiliar ingredients per cook.

GENERAL METHOD MASTERY

Two or more Methods that share similarities (whether in utensil usage, ingredient handling, Experience, or anything else) unlocks a general skill; General skills also have a Mastery Rank, but they are calculated via an average of all Methods inclusive, rounded down. General skills also grant unfamiliar Methods, as long as they can be convincingly argued to share similarities, a starting boost to their Mastery Rank, with a minimum of F. Even if the general Method Mastery Rank drops afterwards, the mastery rank for discovered Methods remains the same.

For instance, Small Pot Handling (General) is at a Mastery Rank of D (comprising Boiling (Small Pot) - B and Blanching (Small Pot) - F. When Soupmaking as a Method is discovered, it starts at D.

While a table of common Methods that players can discover is included in the APPENDICES*, players may improvise any suitable Method but must indicate whether they are a general or specific Method. General Methods do not add bonuses to the dish; a perfectly Boiled cabbage may boost Texture, but the General skill for Small Pot Boiling will not, even if it is at Perfect.
