SUNDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO “2 Gospel Songs by Sam Cooke” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0azkZ751hSg Two of my favorite gospel songs made popular in the early 1950s by Sam Cooke & The Soul Stirrers. "Touch the Hem of His Garment" re-tells the amazing story of the chronically ill and socially outcast woman who touches the hem of Jesus's garment (His prayer shawl) to be healed (Matthew 9:20-21)--the more you learn about this story the more fascinating it becomes.
"Jesus Gave Me Water" is the story about the Samaritan woman who meets Jesus at Jacob’s Well, a public watering place near Mount Gerizim (a place of spiritual significance). Jesus was en route to Galilee, having just finished a lot of work in “respectable Judaea” and taking a break in “unrespectable Samaria,” home of racial half-breeds looked down upon by Pharisees and Romans. Jesus sat down by the well while the disciples went to buy bread. When a solitary gentile woman came to draw water, he broke at least two social and religious rules when he asked her to give him a drink. A strange conversation followed, untwisting the barriers between natural and spiritual, literal, and eternal, condemnation, and redemption. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0azkZ751hSg

Hi Marina! I have a question for you. I’ve noticed you mention Sam Cooke in several of your stories, and I wondered if you are a fan of his music. I love soul music and consider him to be one of the most talented soul singers of all time. If you do listen to him, what are your favorite songs? Mine would probably be A Change Is Gonna Come, Touch the Hem of His Garment, and Bring It On Home To Me (especially the live version at the Harlem Square Club).
Also, if you haven’t seen The Two Killings of Sam Cooke on Netflix, I highly recommend it. Even for people who don’t know his music, it is an interesting look at the intertwining of the music industry and the civil rights movement.
Would love to hear your thoughts! ❤️😘
Sweet Shanny! A fellow Cooke lover! Oh this brings me joy.
Like Elvis and many of his era I grew up on Cooke’s music, or at least a top five selection -What a Wonderful World, Cupid etc- and always enjoyed him. Starting to study him out of curiosity as I got older impressed me with his good character and his vast vision. I did see that documentary a few years ago, loved it and it only confirmed my impression. What a remarkable human and an exceptional artist.
Rather like RFK’s murder and that of MLK, I get rather choked up about Cooke’s untimely end, filled with such a sense of loss and a wonder for what might’ve been, it was a terrible time to lose such bright influences.
Im glad you mentioned the live Harlem concert, they’ve become some of my absolute favorites of his and they showcase so much natural talent and incredible energy, it’s a damn crime RCA withheld them so long for the reasons they did. Glad we’re got them now, rather like the comeback special, I’ll put up with the audience noise for the sheer amount of verve that comes through. Some of my favorite versions of his songs are on that record.
Ok but lastly, favorite songs. Hmm.
Touch the Hem of his Garment, (I adore it,) as well as A Change Will Come, also Chain Gang, Everybody Loves to Cha Cha, Summertime, Twisting the Night Away (his growls!!!) and lastly my favorite hidden gem is Rome Wasn’t Built in a Day -it’s so catchy, the horns send me into a happy astral sphere and the sentiment is sweet. 🤣
I’m so gonna rope that particular song into the Sarge universe, watch me. 🌚 thanks for asking, such fun to chat with someone who shares an interest. Xoxo
PS -have you seen the movie One Night in Miami? It was rather fascinating and I loved L. Odom’s portrayal of Cooke.

The Soul Stirrers - I'm Trying To Be Your Friend 1973)
Absolutely fantastic funky gospel soul from the Soul Stirrers, who started way back in the 1920s, later including Sam Cooke and Lou Rawls, and continuing into the 1990s.  This version of the group featured several of the Crume brothers.

SUNDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO + HAPPY BIRTHDAY SAM COOKE, the King of Soul and one of America’s most influential singer-songwriters, creative pioneers, and game-changers, with hit songs like “Chain Gang,” “Cupid,” “Saturday Night,” “Twisting the Night Away,” “Wonderful World,” “You Send Me,” and so many more. His distinctive vocal style influenced singers such as Bryan Ferry, Steve Perry, and Rod Stewart. Born in 1931, Sam also had a significant role in the Civil Rights Movement. He used his popularity to appeal to whites and blacks, joining a platform with his friends Muhammed Ali, Jim Brown, and Malcolm X to campaign for racial equality.
“Sam Said” is my tribute song: My lyrics describe the arc of his life and career, from his early days in gospel music, to his popular standards, then to his achievements as an entrepreneur and artist’s role model. This is a no-frills acoustic recording, but I aim to re-record it in a reggae style, as reggae was a field Cooke was heading towards before he died in 1964 (Sidebar: Cooke advised a struggling young r’n’b singer from Texas to “go reggae." His name was Johnny Nash, and the style-switch worked out grandly for Nash, another of my favorite singer-songwriters). Meanwhile, HB Sam—thank you for blazing a trail with such a lovely voice.

in another life, I'd have continued on the music track and worked to develop my singing. for this life, I guess I'm content providing harmony to sam cooke and eddie vedder. I'll save myself an empty room wherever I live so that I can hear myself echoing and resonating and it will feel perfect.

Sam Cooke - Night Beat (1963)
