Okay, now is the time where I complain of Duo's arc (I don't know if I'll ever do this again)

This is where everything starts, the Diamond Cutters talking about their lastest, and also very first, mission as a team...

I will already point something: Note that Lanolin says "We have a lot to work on 😑😮‍💨" instead of "We have a lot to work on 😖😩" Yep, the emojis are important.

My point is that the face she actually does indeed gives the vibes of someone tired who wants their team to get better... Buuuuut, it doesn't show her dissatisfaction with herself, if she showed herself a little more panicked and vulnerable in front of her teammates, she would more definitively give the vibes of someone who is pressing herself above all else, who is stressed because she takes her and as primarily her own fails as a leader and intend to work on.

This could make us reconsider her actions towards Tangle and her toy:

Note that since she looks tired on the start but only seems irritated when glaring at Tangle, she seems not to be taking the a bigger portion of the fault to herself, what would bring the point of she being pressing herself more than the rest of the team and so tending more to give slight bursts like this with Tangle's toy... But since she doesn't show such signals and given she's looking at Tangle and her toy with irritation when she is also talking about "diversify the team" and "have more options" it lend the readers to think she's got some beef with Tangle. It comes out more as rude attitude towards an already established character than as some burst of somebody being pressed (either by somebody else, either by herself)

That got too much, next point: Duo's arrival

Mimic is clever, he strikes the right points to convince them three that he is determined to help, willing to evolve and not afraid of the stuff he KNOWS are dangerous, so their acceptance of this new member happens just good.

And then we got what is the WORST decision in the plot of this arc:

They reveal us it's really Mimic in the EXACT next page after he is accepted just like that. No mystery... no red herrings... they just show us that...

If they kept this twist, we could give Lanolin more credit later when she gets in the recruit defense, but well... We know she's wrong, then it's harder to understand.

But now they showed that to us, they'll showcase Mimic's disguise abilities and his ellaborated lies and plans, right?

Mimic's "ellaborated" plan is kick Silver and expect the following rock slide to kill the DC, after all is not like they were fast and quick enough to avoid that or had resources to explode the rocks and protect themselves, right?

OH, wait, they HAVE, they CAN and they DO!! they avoid AND explode the rock slide quickly, right? WHAT A SURPRISE, NO??

Sarcasm aside, Mimic's plan was full of holes, like Whisper was the only one to see he kicked Silver... But he was really expecting Silver didn't feel that? And if the rocks smashed the DC, what would he do? Reveal himself to Silver since the hedgehog would not have ways to prove? Worse: What if Silver managed to grab the rocks again? What would he do?

Oh wait, he luckily doesn't have to worry about that since this flood and Giant Chopper comes out from nowhere and make sure Silver is not able to help the DC and give them a badass moment in which they show they didn't need to move at all if weren't the flood, Lanolin's magenta wisp easily destroys the rocks as well as Whisper's rocket would...

I’m glad Mimic didn’t get fully outed in Issue 64. I want this to be a bit of a longer term thing where we’re just constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop. I admittedly would’ve been a bit disappointed if they caught him 2 issues into his infiltration and whatnot. Plus, we’ll get the juicy drama of the Diamond Cutters finding out that, oh shit, Silver was RIGHT? Maybe he could rejoin the team then, who knows.

Really enjoying this arc and whats its doing for the characters. Lower stakes stuff that focuses on character will always be my bread and butter

IDW SONIC #68 - THOUGHTS

Warning: Spoilers Ahead

This issue was really good! From what I could gather, @spiritsonic was trying some new stuff with her art here, and her hard work really shows! She's always great, but I'm real excited to see what she gives us in the future.

After all the debate, I still do consider the circumstances surrounding this update somewhat unfortunate, but whether it was brought on by (perhaps unnecessarily) harsh criticisms from the community or not, it does look really good, and Evan seems happy with it on her various social media feeds, so I'm happy, too.

Aside from the fantastic art, this issue also had a lot of stuff I've really been wanting from IDW Sonic!

The story features a single Chaos Emerald hunt instead of just nabbing a bunch of 'em at once.

I always prefer this to stuff like Starline just bringing them all to Eggman or the Roboticized Masters collecting them off-page. Placing them one by one over time really helps drive home to me how significant these gems are to this world, and makes them feel like part of the overarching narrative instead of a simple macguffin that can just appear whenever it's convenient for the plot.

I guess what I'm saying is I like the setup phase of Chekhov's Gun just as much as the payoff.

As of this issue, we now know the location of three Emeralds - Rouge grabbed the white one in the 2022 Annual, Tails ended up with the purple one in Winter Jam, and now we've got the yellow one here.

We got some nice exploration of Sonic and Tails' dynamic in this one. It's nothing new, Sonic and Tails are naturally seen together quite a lot in this comic, but they're often in communication with other characters working toward a greater goal, or trying to solve some kind of crisis. They're after the Emerald here, but there's no great catastrophe and it's just them... spending time together. They get competitive, they banter, they pick up where the other falters - it's a really great reflection of the strong relationship Sonic points out between Silver and Blaze in Issue 64.

They get lots of little moments in this story, but I especially appreciate this one:

It's a small thing, but I think this is the first time in the comic's 5+ year run that Sonic has referred to Tails as his "little brother." When you think about it, these two really have spent most of their lives together, and this is a nice reminder of that.

What I really appreciate most in this issue, though, is the

🫒Environments.🫒

I've always felt that IDW Sonic's world was a little... homogenous, without a lot of the beautiful, fantastical scenery we see in the games.

Even when we DID get cool set pieces, they were usually direct references to the games - not a lot of spectacular, new settings made to fit the games' world.

But this one had a cool ravine with weird hexagonal pillars and old bridges for Sonic and Tails to race through!

That looked like it could be a game level! Then they get into the cave and we get this cool, glowing, underground green world with a giant salamander stalking around - this is also a really neat way of hinting at how the Emeralds affect the environment around them!

I know it's gonna be a while before we return back to the main series - the Fang the Hunter mini-series does seem fun, though - but I'm really, really excited to see where it takes us next!

i know im late to the party and not to start an argument but the duo arc in sonic idw is very stupid and badly written.

i keep seeing people agree with this stance for different reasons (aka. LANOLIN DUMB AND DOESN'T BELIVE SILVER!!) when like- she kinda has reason not to.

i just think its way way way too forced because none of the characters are doing things that they would fucking do-

first of all, HE KICKED YOU TELL THEM HE KICKED YOU

whisper literally saw it happen- she saw him kick silver. she knows what duo did!!! and even though silver didn't know that she saw what duo did, it would be very in character to tell them anyways! he's very honest and headstrong! he's not a loser who will fold the moment someone tells him he's wrong!! HE TRIED TO KILL SONIC!!

STOP ACTING LIKE A KICKED LITTLE PUPPY YOU ATTEMPTED MURDER, YOU FOUGHT GODS, YOU RID THE WORLD OF THE METAL VIRUS WITH SONIC. FIGHT BACK

"it was an accident" he literally kicked you. you were already rightfully accusing him- WHY NOT BRING UP THE FACT HE KICKED YOU??

also dude his eyes literally changed colors and he gave you an ominous and obviously evil grin.

he brought up the eye changing to whisper and not the rest of the team for some reason??????? later in the issue, whisper confides in silver. they talk about their suspicion and come to the conclusion that this is mimic! for really valid reason! now, let's move onto the next issue. SURELY they'll tell lanolin about this... right? RIGHT????

and then the girls start fighting.

dude- JUST TALK TO EACH OTHER— lanolin, you are the leader of this newly form group. two of the members who are extremely skilled and have so much experience under their belts are telling you something. maybe don't immediately jump to defending the dude you've known for like two days??? like don't let them assault the bitch, but call a group meeting or SOMETHING.. but she's new so i can excuse that i guess. but SILVER AND WHISPER?? SAY SOMETHING!!! PLEASE!!!!

this kind of plot is genuinely so annoying it makes me want to rip my hair out. i hate this trope so much- I HATE MISCOMMUNICATION TROPES WHEN THEY'RE SO OBVIOUSLY FIXED- YOU COULD JUST SHOUT OUT ONE SENTENCE LIKE-

"HE KICKED ME!!" or "HIS FORM STARTED CHANGING!!"

also one thing that could've made this infinitely times less infuriating..

DON'T TELL US ITS MIMIC LITERALLY THE PAGE AFTER HE GETS ACCEPTED INTO THE DIAMOND CUTTERS!

anyways i believe that's enough ranting today, i genuinely love sonic franchise so so so much. i am just annoyed by this specific trope to no ends. everything else about this comic? ive loved it! genuinely such a fun time to read, but this plot feels so aggravating and redundant. it just makes silver look like a loser who will fold at any pushback. it makes lanolin seem bossy and untrusting of her team and like she just wants to put them down. it makes whisper look incompetent and like she has no idea how to make a point or cooperate in a team. and it makes tangle... not exist, lmao.
