A Gruesome Murder in the 1700's

This pretty little Somerset village in a hidden valley was the scene of a brutal and sadistic murder in the 1700s, involving three women..

A Woman, her daughter and a poor servant girl.

The victim is buried at this lovely Norman Church.

Chew Valley Lake and an underwater village of Moreton

In 1999, a driver and two passengers spotted a lady who appeared in the middle of the road (B3114) and drifted across.

She was said to have long, wet wavy hair and an old style dress.

The driver pulled into a nearby pub and called the police.

The driver later attended a historical / paranormal meeting where around twelve other people claimed to have seen the ghostly woman.

Another witness believes that the ghost could be Catherine, who drowned near the site before the lake was created.

In the 1950s, the small village of Moreton had to be evacuated to create Chew Valley Lake, near Bristol.

The lowland in which it stood was intentionally flooded & beneath the waters there are the ruins of roads, gardens and even houses submerged for almost 70 years.

Moreton was named in the Doomsday Book and you can still see parts of it when the lake is at a low level.

Young Catherine Brown died in the early twentieth century when she slipped into a culvert filled with water and hit her head.

The night she died, her mother saw her ascending the stairs of their home, and said Catherine appeared soaked with water.

When the mother went to find her, Catherine was not in the house.

After her death, people reported seeing a young woman walking in the vicinity of Chew Valley lake, wearing old-fashioned clothing and appearing as though she were soaked with water.

The local historical society gathered those who had seen the girl and interviewed them.

Everyone agreed that they had seen a girl walking in the area and their accounts of her were oddly similar.

Catherine's grave lies at the bottom of the reservoir.
