darker timeline AU where things twist just enough that it ends up with yoo joonghyuk on the absolute throne; the supreme king, unchallenged, ever victorious at his left hand lounges a man in a white coat, who sometimes leans in close and whispers in the supreme king's ear (advice, admonitions, negotiations, gentle teasing-- 'joonghyuk-ah, don't be so stubborn, won't you listen to me on this once?' he is the only one who would dare), with a devotion so pure it is almost cruel, loyalty sharp as a sword and his tongue sharper; one of the few times that the supreme king's mouth forms a shadow of a smile, when his eyes show a ripple of something other than imperious indifference, is when he lifts his head, and glances at him

Lmaorofl Kim Dokja
"That wasn't my world." I looked at the empty space. "My world is here."
Yoo Joonghyuk was silent for a long time. I licked my lips and laughed. "This place has my incarnation Yoosung, my colleague Yoo Sangah, Han Sooyoung who hasn't blackened yet, my mother…"
"Don't feel joyful. It isn't over yet."
- Kim Dokja just called Yoo Joonghyuk his world then got self-conscious when Yoo Joonghyuk was silent for a long time and started talking about other people
Once we came to our senses, we were lying on the floor like we had made a promise. It was because Yoo Joonghyuk and I had reached our limits.
-What promise, Kim Dokja???

“Y’know, I don’t really think it was a good idea to let Han Sooyoung get that job at the university.”
Yoo Jonghyuk blinks up at him, but turns back to picking apart a pomegranate. Kim Dokja reaches over to grab a handful of seeds, and Yoo Jonghyuk obligingly pushes the platter closer.
Yoo Jonghyuk says, “She’s just going in for some guest lectures. It’s not much of a job.”
“Yes,” Kim Dokja agrees, “but she could say anything about us and those kids would take it as gospel.”
Yoo Jonghyuk moves onto cutting up strawberries. “What are you so worried about? She won’t lie too much. History books exist.”
Kim Dokja steals a slice of strawberry this time. “Yes, she is a good writer. But she is not always a good storyteller.”
This time Yoo Jonghyuk looks up placidly. “She wrote both of our stories.”
“She’s giving lectures in order to give insight into the Scenarios and how they changed perspectives and ‘altered human interactions’. They also want a first hand account of the scenarios by one of the few people who recently participated in them, and how it impacted her. But Han Sooyoung tells stories in a way that makes the reader have to figure it out themselves, and they have at most an hour and a half. No one will be able to get anything out of it aside from how big she thought your chest looked with a belt across it.”
Yoo Jonghyuk processes this information, and promptly goes back to cutting fruit.
“It isn’t your problem.”
Kim Dokja sighs and leans back in his seat. His cane rests across his lap, and the sunlight feels warm from where they’re set up at a table in the large garden.
He starts again. “I’m just worried as to how it will go. She’s a good storyteller, but I don’t know if this will work out as well as we hope.”
“Calm down. If she can write a book about our journey, she can give a lecture to a few college students.”
Kim Dokja tilts his head back against the chair, shading his eyes with his hand.
Quietly, he says, “Maybe you’re right. I should have a little faith.”
Yoo Jonghyuk hums quietly, and Kim Dokja looks up to see him looking at his phone.
“Hey, come to think of it, isn’t it lunch time? Are you not cooking anything?”
Yoo Jonghyuk taps out a text and sets his phone back on the table. “The kids are bringing food back with them.”
“Mmh.” Kim Dokja leans back in his chair with a smile. Then, “You should come sit with me. The shade is nice.”
“You aren’t a cat.” Yoo Jonghyuk continues cutting fruit in the sun, but once he finishes, he sets the fruit aside to dry and sits beside Kim Dokja on the hanging bench. Kim Dokja moves his cane to rest on the ground and slides over so Yoo Jonghyuk can sit down. Their thighs press together, and one of Yoo Jonghyuk’s arms slides around the back so he can rest his hand on the back of Kim Dokja’s neck. Kim Dokja doesn’t mind.
The party rarely use excuses to touch him now, opting for the straightforward approach of doing what they want and letting Kim Dokja get used to it. A hand on the back of the neck, an arm looped through his, a pair of legs thrown across his lap, a child asking to be picked up. Maybe once he would have thought it to be overdone and unnecessary, but it feels grounding, and warm. They don’t mind when he does the same, so he doesn’t ask them to stop.
When the kids arrive, they find the two sleeping against each other on the hanging bench, hands tangled together in the shade.
-
It’s only when Kim Dokja is getting into bed when he remembers his train of thought. He’s already got his arms full with Lee Gilyoung and Lee Jihye, snuggled up against him under the blankets, so he waits until Yoo Jonghyuk slides in next to them to talk. The kids are already passed out, so he speaks over their heads quietly.
“About Han Sooyoung, it’s not that I don’t have faith in her. I just don’t want her doing it alone. She’s already had to shoulder so much in carrying out stories, and I know she wants to, I just don’t want her to feel like she has to do these things alone.”
Yoo Jonghyuk stares at him in silence for a while, sheets pulled up to his chin and hair disheveled. “That’s rich, coming from you.”
Kim Dokja wrinkles his nose in indignation. “Hey, I’ve been making progress. I’m not that kind of guy anymore.”
Clearly ignoring that, Yoo Jonghyuk yawns widely and asks, “Then do you just want to go with her?”
“Absolutely not. I can’t believe how many times I have to say this, but I’m a reader, not a writer. I don’t tell stories.”
Yoo Jonghyuk shoves his face into the pillow, clearly tired of their conversation. “Then what do you want.”
“I just want someone, anyone of the party to go with her; support her while she’s there. They can give some anecdotes to make it look like they’re also sharing their viewpoint.” Kim Dokja absentmindedly blows one of Lee Gilyoung’s stray hairs out of the way.
Yoo Jonghyuk sighs. “We’ll figure it out together later. Goodnight, Kim Dokja.”
“Aish, goodnight, Jonghyuk-ah.”

SCREAMING HOW COULD I FORGET ABOUT 0TH YJH... On the one hand I do want him to be happy with Lee Seolhwa because Seolhyuk makes me Sad, but on the other hand, now SP, 3rd/1864th YJH, and 999 ALL have a hot DILF for a common enemy. Team-up of the century. 41 has popcorn.
gjdjsk 0 is either the dilf that became your neighbor or that cute (only in kdj's eyes) youngster whos clueless (canon stuff btw. if you've read yma's side story youll know what im referring to. the guy cant do his taxes to save his life)
41 is, by all means, "the scum gong" on the surface. but *gasp* he actually has such a tragic past and a broken heart and Can show a protective side for kdj, the one his heart yearns for?? who knew
999 on the other hand is soft. he's the one who will make love. hes the type to hold all bags of groceries in one hand just so that he can hold kdj's hand with the other. does he have moments where he berates and gets annoyed by him?? for sure. it's kdj he's dealing with after all.
SP has the right amount of rizz. he also canonically has the widest range of wardrobe. he is the CEO. the Emperor. the Mafia boss. you get where im going with this
our yjh on the other hand simply had sheer dumb luck honestly. that and his yearning lasted for millennia

orv 🤝 asteroid city
stories about stories that left a surprisingly large impact crater in my brain
anyway some more (frankly far too extensive) thoughts under the cut for an au i dont forsee myself drawing for again (cw: mention of suicidal thoughts and lots of talk about death)
for anyone reading this who hasn't watched asteroid city: it's a movie documenting the making of an in universe fictional play called asteroid city written by conrad earp (kdj) directed by schubert green (hsy) lead actor jones hall (yjh) who plays augie, very emotionally repressed guy whose wife (lsh, kinda) just died and is trying to figure out how to tell his children about it. anyway jones shows up at conrad's house for auditions and the two fall in love, then conrad dies from a car crash 6 months into the shows run and jones is left to play a character mourning the death of his wife while irl mourning the death of his lover and it drives him up a wall trying to figure out if he's doing conrad "right" (hence 'i still don't understand the play')
anyway for this au like everything that happens in the movie also happens i think but the character motivations are a little bit different like in the movie conrad earp writes the play before he ever meets jones hall so we don't really know why it's Like That but i think in the au kdj is either like. having suicidal thoughts or just fully believed he wasn't gonna live for very long in the like cptsd symptom kinda way lmao. so like it's not really that he wrote the play to help yjh process his own death (i think if that were the case the message of the play would be way different lmfao) but it's more like he just had death and grief on the brain and was also writing stuff. and like the answer he arrived at was that he didn't actually arrive at anything in the end. sometimes tragedy just happens and there's no meaning to it you just kinda have to live with that. like i know this is not how the process of play production works but if there's one change to the original movie plot in this au i want to make it's that kdj still dies by car accident but before the script is 100% finished or after he's been talking about rewriting the ending or something because i think he also doesn't figure out an answer he's satisfied with in the end about like death and grief and mourning. like you just know that in kdj's ideal world his loved ones wouldn't mourn him at all if he dies because he doesn't want them to be sad because of him and maybe he still hasn't fully 100% internalised that he has people who would care if he dies. anyway i think yjh kinda understands like subliminally that kdj was trying to Say Something with the play he just isn't sure what because he's looking for An Answer like some kind of meaning to everything that's happened but the point is there isn't one and if there is kdj hasn't found it either lmao. and like i think hsy understood immediately like as soon as she heard the news of his death she's figured out what kdjs thought process behind the play was and like she's absolutely not holding it together as well as she appears but she also sees yjh driving himself insane every night trying to find The Meaning or whatever and like whether or not she even agrees with kdj aside this is the only way she can think of to help him get out of that hole bc she can't exactly tell yjh like 'the point is that there is no point you just have to live with The Everything' so she's just trying her best to make him understand on his own. idk i just need someone who's watched asteroid city to see this and tell me if ive gone completely insane LMAO

"What do you want me to ask?" I know what to she wanted me to ask. However, there were some things I didn't ask because I already knew the answer. "Um… my favourite colour or favourite food," Jung Heewon replied. "Those are questions that wouldn't be asked even in blind dates." "…Has Dokja-ssi been on a blind date?" I ignored the slight hit to my pride and asked, "Are you disregarding me?" "No… it just doesn't seem like Dokja-ssi's style. I feel like you would want a fateful meeting."
A fateful meeting, huh?
Now who might he have had one of those with?

Since I have so many words lying around, probably for things that will never get finished, I figured i might as well start up wip wednesdays again :D. Today being the orv edition. This is a snippet of one convo i wrote for a weird fusion of the movie Your Name with sci-fi/post apocalypse elements. This would be near the climax of it all, once secrets have come out (spoiler alert there are some time shenanigans ocuring.
This is the first bit of orv writing i ever did, even before i had finished the novel and by now i’ve decided to change how i write out names but if anyone has info on proper formatting i’d be happy to hear em.
Yoo Junghyeok thought that people wanted to fight for their lives. He’s seen them struggling tooth and nail for even the chance to survive. Some overcome it, some succumb to what they think is an inevitable end. Kim Dokja hasn’t even tried. For most people, he would just consider them fools and move on, but Kim Dokja is no fool. Begrudgingly, Yoo Junghyeok has to acknowledge that in fact, Kim Dokja is perhaps the most clever person he knows. What is all that knowledge good for if not to save his own skin? Kim Dokja has poured everything into making sure Yoo Junghyeok succeeded, and expected Yoo Junhyeok to abandon him in return? Damnable man.
In front of him stands a door, number 3403. Yoo Junghyeok is forced to wrench it open when it doesn’t open on its own.
“Kim Dokja!”
“You’re so stubborn, you damned sunfish.”
Yoo Junghyeok, whirls around. He’s frozen for a second, taken aback to be looking at a near copy of the face he’s come to know over the past year as his own skin, staring at it in the mirror. This version of Kim Dokja is older than the one he inhabited, none of the baby fat on his cheeks and eyes far sharper. He’s still too thin, and that smile is as punchable as Yoo Junghyeok always thought it to be.
The horns and wings are a surprise though. Kim Dokja hasn’t mentioned them once. The horns are somewhat unobtrusive, all black and standing up straight in the center of his head. However, the dark maroon wings stretch out wide, wingspan likely twice Kim Dokja’s height.  Not that it stops Yoo Junghyeok from silently stomping over and promptly doing what he’s wanted to do since this entire body switching dilemma began.
He punches Kim Dokja squarely in the jaw.
Kim Dokja has the audacity to not even look surprised, he rubs a hand along his chin, wiping away the blood with a smile. “I was hoping that you wouldn’t be able to touch me here. Pity. Hey, if you hit me once, that means I should be able to hit you back, right?”
There are a million other things Yoo Junghyeok should be telling Kim Dokja right now, plans he should be forming to save this crafty sacrificial bastard. Instead, he finds himself saying, “Try it.”
Kim Dokja sighs. “I value my life, thank you very much.”
“Clearly not.” Yoo Junghyeok glares at the man.
Kim Dokja blinks. “Ah. Right.”
“Where is your body?”
Kim Dokja has the audacity to chuckle. “I’m sitting right in front of you. Don’t tell me that coming here made you blind.”
Yoo Junghyeok reaches for his sword. “Physically.”
“Alright, alright, I don’t particularly feel like dying again.” Kim Dokja puts his hands up. “It’s around here somewhere. Couldn’t tell you where though.”
Bullshit. Kim Dokja remembers details down to the smallest piece. He probably knows in what room his body is in currently. “Kim Dokja.”
“You know that this future shouldn’t be changed.”
