Hello Maddie, I guess I have to ask you this question: I live in Germany too and I just noticed... do we even have gender neutral pronouns? We have er/ihn and sie/ihr for he/him and she/her but what do we have for they/them (not the plural form sie/euch)?
Hello,
unfortunately we don’t have a German equivalent to singular “they/them” as a gender neutral pronoun.
For everyone who doesn’t know German but is interested: plural they/them in German means “sie/ihnen" and that are the same words as the singular feminine pronouns so we can‘s use our “they/them” pronouns in a gender neutral way like you can do in English because you’d be automatically saying “she/her”.
There’s been attempts to create new pronouns, I think the most “common” or most talked about in the queer community is “xier/xiese”. You can find a lot of information about it on this website, including examples of how to use it.But not every German non-binary persons wants to use them (for various reasons) so you probably shouldn’t automatically use them (especially since it can involve outing the person) unless they told you it’s okay.I know German non-binary people who just don’t use any pronouns which means you have to say their name more frequently when talking about them. Instead of say “they like to go swimming” you say “[insert person’s name] likes to go swimming”.
When you want to talk in general about an unknown person (of unknown gender) like “I think the person working at the doctor’s office is nice, I’ve talked to them on the phone” - that’s nearly impossible in German because the moment the sentence reaches the “them”-part you hit above mentioned problem that singular they/them doesn’t work in German. The generic masculinum makes it even fucking harder because it makes you say things like “Arztpraxis” even if you know the doctor is female...
Long story short: I love the German language but I also hate it.
