everything is making me emotional lately i have so many reads kinda put on the back burner, not bc i dont love them, but bc theyre affecting me TOO much and i cant handle it rn, and i cant handle the emotions of a reread of anything beloved rn yet either, so pick smthn i have on my shelves that i havent read yet and have few-to-nonexistent preconceived notions of/emotions about, so i can read it and hopefully cleanse my brain palate and stop being insane. classic fantasy is usually helpful when im in this sort of mood. but like. doesn't have to be

The reason I’m having trouble writing the second chapter of my recent Hugo-pastiche Les Mis fanfic is that, every time I try to write Jean Valjean in the style of Victor Hugo, the chapter just turns into an overlong agonized inner monologue of spiraling self-recriminations and self-loathing. and then the story never moves forward. :P

Originally I’d actually hoped for this entire fic to be a short comic, but I changed it to prose after realizing that most of the comic’s script was just Jean Valjean’s inner monologue and yet somehow all that inner monologue was still not enough to feel like anything even close to resembling something like the characterization of Hugo’s Jean Valjean.

This is why it’s so much easier to write Javert. Javert canonically hates thinking and will not do it. It makes everything so much easier

#we need more characters who deliberately refuse to have an inner life #it makes them so much easier to write #Les mis #I don’t pretend I’m writing Valjean completely ‘in character’ or w/e #but it has taken me Years to figure out how to write him in something that even resembles his narrative voice in the novel XD #years! and a couple older fics that I have very mixed feelings on now #especially wrt Valjean's characterization #Javert is an easy character because once you realize he doesn’t think and has an authority kink he’s p easy to write #but Valjean is actually like a genuinely complex little guy #and there are so many contradictions and nuances in the way he thinks that its difficult to get a solid read on him #especially we spend a lot of the book viewing him 'from the outside' #and to the people around him he's often mysterious and unreadable

i’m the #1 todd hewitt advocate, that boy did so many wrong things and i won’t justify them but god damn if the story doesn’t explain it and deal with it in one of the most thorough and refreshing ways creating the most groundbreaking character arc i’ve ever had the pleasure of reading

Lucky! It's one of the top 5 books I want to try to get my hands on once I can allow myself to buy more books.

i'm not sure honestly if they'll be doing the following series of the percy jackson universe, but we can only hope. as far as we know, the second season (which'll be about the second book) hasn't been greenlit yet.

anyways, if you ever do feel like getting into the riordanverse, the series order is something like:

percy jackson and the olympians (the lightning thief to the last olympian)

the kane chronicles (egyptian mythology)

the heroes of olympus

magnus chase and the gods of asgard (norse mythology)

the trials of apollo

the sun and the star (stand alone featuring nico di angelo and will solace!!)

the new percy jackson books (chalice of the gods, wrath of the triple goddess, and an unnamed third in the new trilogy!)

im SURE theyll be renewed for next season. everyone loves it i havent seen one bad review. i hope they get to do the whole series cuz i LOVE this cast. and the last adaptation flopped and didnt finish so honestly itd just be so mean if they did that again lmao.

as for if i ever get around to reading it, honestly im hella intimidated by the shear amount of books there are. ive also been in a crazy readers slump lately but maybe one day ill go crazy start the whole thing.

Reading through all the titles of the books I've gotten on Humble Bundle in my account on their site is a really sobering look inwards ngl.

#I'm certainly a person of diverse and intense interests #many of which were 1-6 month long things that I haven't thought about in years despite it being all I cared about at the time #but yeah... I sure am passionate guy #with my elephants' graveyard of unread humble bundle books about ten thousand different hobbies and niche interests #few of which seem to naturally relate to each other #I don't like... dislike that I like things so much #but sometimes I wish I was less of a fucking dilettante and managed to git gud at more things #by focusing on fewer things overall
