Poster 40, 2016. Happy anniversary to Snow White, which was released on this day back in 1938. I love stylizing characters but for this one with such a historical tie to Disney’s history, it felt right to take a more on-model approach to the cast. I also wanted the poster to look like it could’ve existed during the time of the film’s release. Working in one style has never been fun for me so I tend to try to explore a bit and learn new techniques of drawing and painting. I looked at lots of German fairy tale illustrations to help come up with the composition and typography to give it a more ‘authentic to the fairy tale’ feel. There’s a bit of a mix of storytelling here with Snow White’s dilemma with the Queen/Witch, the heroic Prince’s venture to the castle, and then the very comical dwarfs in the foreground. These early Disney films could have moments of real darkness so I didn’t want that to go unnoticed. Hopefully the combination of all these different elements give a decent representation of the film in total.
