Was debating on whether to put Tahu or Takanuva, eventually decided for the latter. Since if you think about it they share many things, like:
-Former friends got turned into mindless drones destroying everything
-Both got stranded into foreign lands and always felt like an outsider
-Both wear a piece of equipment(s) created by a presumably more powerful being
-Both was given power of the dark/shadow lord at some point in time
-Both got flinged across dimensions
-Both fight world-ending colossal enemy
Edit:
-Both got their most trusty armament confiscated
-Both fight their "evil counterpart"

Headcanon that Skrall as a species are essentially doomed on Spherus Magna.
Even though they are warriors of the highest caliber, 100,000 years of war, starvation, and the loss of every female of their species leads to a slow, inevitable decline.
Ruthlessly culling any member of their species that wasn't a high-class warrior meant that there was no investment in education or skilled labor. The only way their society functioned was to rely on pillaging and slave labor to obtain food, medicine, and essentially everything that didn't involve stabbing.
Given their very rigid social system, it didn't seem like female Skrall had much say or power in their society. On Bara Manga, the second they did get mental powers they were considered a threat and banished to the wilds. Canonically, the male and female Skrall also separated into two societies on Bota Manga.
After that point, the population replacement rate was 0 and the male Skrall were in an endless war with the Agori for resources. While they never really lost fights, that didn't mean that they weren't losing people to disease, injury, and old age.
And then Mata Nui came along and curb-stomped the only leader-cast member of their species they had left. The remaining male Skrall dispersed into smaller groups led by named Skrall or high-tier casts.
And then Teridax came along.
A huge portion of their remaining population was atomized when Teridax blasted their home in the Black Spike Mountains. The remaining groups decided to join the free-for-all fight between the Agori, Toa, Rahkshi, and Skakdi.
And even as amazing warriors in a normal fight, there's no way the Skrall did anything but get their shit kicked in against armies of beings with ranged supernatural powers. A sword is great, but not much use when all your opponents can do things like suck the oxygen from your lungs, or summon a mountant to crush you without breaking a sweat.
Plus, every Agori and Glatorian hates their guts and wouldn't hesitate to gut any Skrull injured or trapped by the absolute free-for-all that was Bara Magna.
Anyone who survived the bloodbath and subsequent reformation of Spherus Magna, including adding Bota Magna Skrull to their ranks, is still looking at a very grim future.
The Skrall are now outclassed by almost every sentient species (and most wildlife) on the planet in terms of power and resources. Their home and leader cast are gone, and they have no slaves left (all killed or emancipated by Toa) to produce goods or labor. Their species is still split into two societies by gender and getting together long enough to have kids probably isn't in the cards.
A few Skrall are hired on by the Dark Hunters, but given their lack of powers, they would be best as cannon fodder, or as combat trainers to beings with greater powers.
Every other remaining male Skrall group is going to have their shit kicked in by every other group the second they try to cause trouble. And the Baterra are probably still picking off warriors whenever and wherever they find them.
Their population has plummeted over the last 100,000 years and the remaining members of the species are essentially the last generation.
The best hope their species has is that the female Skrall, being less militant and having no mental powers left, join with Agori or Glatorian society. They might be closely related enough that they can have children with the Glatorian or Agori.
If so, any future Skrall are at most 50-50 genetically split with another species. Subsequent generations will have thinner and thinner Skrall genetics, and they'll be extinct as an individual species.
Given that they were absolute bastards as a species and society in-canon, that might be for the best. Banishing every member of your society that can have children, and then going to endless war with every one of your neighbors forever is essentially biological suicide.

Been giving the 'Matoran Universe' side of things a lot of attention, so decided to give the non MU side of things some love. The Agori
The Natives of Spherus Magna, and later Bara Magna after the Shattering. They are a race of hardy organic beings with naturally metallic skeletons. they are exceptionally long lived, which is only further enhanced by the common use of cybernetic implants in the race.
They are divided into various Tribes across the world, each taking a name relevant to an element important to their society, or naming themselves after where they live.
Zesk A sub-race of Agori, and all that remains of the Sand Tribe. They were modified by the Great Beings into a more beastial form, and slowly over time devolved into little more than animals. Most Zesk however, are able to be acclimated into civilized society under the right circumstances.
Glatorian A species of beings closely related to the Agori, but larger and stronger. They often live in the Triebs alongside Agori. After the Shattering, Glatorian picked up the role of protectors of the Agori. They protected their younger relatives from the various threats of Bara Magna.
Eventually, as things settled and resources began to dwindle, wars broke out amongst the Agori, Glatorian, and the Skrall. Eventually, things settled with the creation of the Glatorian Arenas. Glatorian would fight in the arenas to earn resources for their Tribes.
Though Glatorian is traditionally the name of a race, it has since evolved into a title as well. Anyone who fights in a Glatorian Arena earns the title of Glatorian, regardless of what they are. Agori, Skrall, Matoran, Toa, etc.
Vorox Similar to the Zesk, the Vorox were Glatorian of the Sand Tribe, modified by the Great Beings. Like their smaller cousins, the Vorox devolved into aggressive desert wondering animals. They too can be acclimated into society, but doing so is much more difficult due to their enhanced strength and durability.
Skrall Another close relative of the Agori and Glatorian, though distinct, the Skrall are a race of strong and durable people. They live alongside Agori in the Stone Tribe.
Skrall culture is rather violent, more so than Agori and Glatorian culture. In recent years however, after the Reformation things have begun to mellow out however. Even before then, many individual Skrall have incorporated themselves into other tribes.
Kaadrix is one such Skrall. He was exiled from the Stone Tribe before the Reformation. He wandered alone for a long time, before finding a tribe called the Mountain Tribe. He was able to incorporate himself into the tribe.
Koza is a Skrall warrior that has heavily modified himself through cybernetics. He is much stronger than most other Skrall. He's infamous for his brutality in the Arena, having torn another Glatorian by the name of Telrakk apart.
Gelra a Glatorian of the Water Tribe. She's a strong, burly warrior with an ego to her. She's well known for her outstanding strength, surprisingly able to match Koza in hand to hand combat on numerous occassions, and typically choosing to fight other Glatorian who are using vehicles or mounts.
Telrakk was an up and coming Glatorian for a branch of the Jungle Tribe. He suffered a particularly nasty loss at the hands of Koza, leaving him severely injured. Eventually, much of body was replaced by mechanics as a result. Over time his off shoot of the Jungle Tribe would run into hardship with Bone Hunters, and during a rematch with Koza, his Tribe's home was razed by the bandits. His return to his destroyed home lead him to become
Talrakk the Conqueror an infamous warlord who uses engineered robots as his army. He intends to conquer as much of the Spherus Magna as he can to forcefully protect it from outside threats with his mechanical troops.

Ok late night Bionicle headcanon posting
So Bionicle has always handled gender really weirdly, and one of the notable cases is the Skrall. All the female members of their species got gifted psionic powers by Annona, and the males exiled them out of distrust.
This begs the obvious question of “how did the Skrall not die out.” My take on this is the Annona is Based Theory.
We already know that the Skrall are divided into classes. We also know that, irl, biological sex and gender identity aren’t the same. Maybe this disconnect is more common in Skrall, and gender identity is seen more as a class.
Annona basically gave the women psychic powers just to fuck with them and cause their society to collapse. This specific selection might make more sense if women serve a different societal role, and if she targeted social women as opposed to “biological females.”
Essentially, Skrall society hasn’t died out because the Skrall Empire has a ton of non-psychic trans men, and the Sisters of the Skrall have a ton of psychic trans women. Annona respects pronouns. Ok bye

thinking about spherus magna so so so much and i NEED to write about the tribes and their bodies and their eating habits
to start off - agori and glatorian are like dogs and wolves: same progenitor, compatible to create hybrids capable of reproduction, different appearances and strengths but similar genetic curriculum.
the seven tribes have specific differences in appearance but most of their anatomy is still the same - humanoid, sharp spaced teeth, vestigial minuscule stubby tail, flat nose, small ears. cross-tribe children weren't very common before the shattering (big ass planet and all) and might become more common as time passes (lots of people died and whatnot), but due to there being no real hierarchy in the gene pool they wont necessarily be perfect hybrids of their parents: more often than not they will resemble only one of them, or showcase smaller traits of the other.
Tapyri (Fire tribe) - oval pupils stretched horizontally, tough skin that secretes a layer of protective mucus good for hot dry climates. different skin pigmentation in the form of spotted patterns, mostly on the back, is surprisingly common.
Gaquri (Water tribe) - crescent pupils stretched horizontally, drop-shaped sturdy scales that slightly overlap. hands and feet are lightly webbed between their fingers, while the eyes have a protective lid for underwater diving.
Lebori (Jungle tribe) - beaded pupils stretched vertically, short thin feathers, mostly greenish, which generally have little use. fingertips, palms and soles have small hooked cells to better their grip when climbing trees and rocks.
Koniri (Ice tribe) - rhomboidal pupils stretched vertically, thick fur that sheds and changes color depending on the seasons. powerful nails and bite, build up fat much easier than other tribes and are incredible sprinters on short distances.
Banuri (Sand tribe) - slit pupils stretched vertically, very small polygonal scales tightly placed together. small sharp horn-like protrusions all over the body, mostly the head, and remarkable adaptability to varying temperatures.
Potori (Rock tribe) - rectangular pupils stretched horizontally, wooly fur that varies in thickness depending on place of origin*. duller teeth, immune to most poisons, have heightened endurance in harsh climates and tougher bones.
Fezeri (Iron tribe) - round pupils similar to a photocamera's aperture, sectioned carapace not unlike that of an insect over skin. have a tendency to develop reddish crusts with age which need to be removed through cyclical moltings.
when it comes to food. oh baby.
ANY CREATURE in the desert is fair game. theyre most of the meat available and by god these people will Fucking Get It or die trying. blood is both cooked and drunk (usually on special occasions) and is often given to sickly, pregnant or young individuals; bones are generally split open for marrow, but while smaller ones can be grated or used to make stock broth, the bigger ones are kept to make weapons or tools - the only ones that eat them are the Bone Hunters, which is why they're called that in the first place, and the Zesk and Vorox, who have built in weapons.
Tapyri have very fertile soil but horrendously high temperatures, so they can grow only a select few plants, mostly cereals. common foods are iron snails and a type of edible lava residue, but a real delicacy is the elusive heat-resistant mole, which is incredibly fat and tender but also fucking FAST. they cook mostly on slabs of rock heated over lava, or on roasts
Gaquri eat anything that enjoys humidity - slugs, leeches**, tadpoles, frogs, other small amphibians, fish and crustaceans if they had any. their vegetables are cave mosses and freshwater algae or kelps - a specific type produces "kelp jades", round fruits that are sticky as hell. they tend to eat things raw, but can also afford to steam or boil their stuff
Lebori have the vastest array of fruits and greens available thanks to living in the green lung of a fucking desert and everybody imports that good stuff from them. their local protein source is comprised mostly insects***, worms and other invertebrates, which they employ in various methods. since they have access to oil, they often default to frying food
Koniri have access to small game and a discrete amount of forests in which they've learned to recognize edible berries, leaves and especially branches. a typical dish for them is a bundle of sticks wrapped in very far strips of meat. in some lakes they also harvest a strange type of anemone. when they don't freeze-dry their food, they tend to either boil or roast it
Banuri relied evenly on hunting, gathering, and husbandry. Zesk and Vorox have adapted thoroughly to the desert ecosystem, and while the first still gather lichens, the latter most hunt in packs
Bone Hunters, being scavengers, eat anything and everything; the Skrall had a more plant-based diet, but in Bara Magna added salt-dried meat; other Potori prefer vegetables like briars and thistles
Fezeri lived in fairly comfortable climates and could afford a pretty varied and balanced diet. Telluris allegedly eats, but nobody can confirm. Sahmad is trying to fuckin survive. give him a break
*Bone Hunters, native to the Bara Magna area, resemble goats; the Skrall, native to a snowy mountain area, resemble sheep. similar cases are found in all tribes across Spherus Magna (ex. BaMa lebori are more akin to geckos, BoMa lebori to lemurs)
**Gaquri would, as such, be the first to try and eat a kraata or krana without even thinking about it. the consistency would not bother them, but they would be mostly perplexed to discover there's food that tastes, respectively, "dark" and "bright"
***scarabax beetles not included, because they taste horribly and are not worth the effort of catching to feed off of them for anybody. Click will live forever

Vrakos was once one of the Skrall Leaders after the shattering and before the Baterra attack. After the Skrall found themselves trapped on Bara Magna, and unable to fight him in battle, until his son Tuma decided that his father was to weak to rule and challenged him to a duel for leadership of the Skrall. In it Tuma practicallt destroyed his father's arm, and damaged part of Vrakos's back blades. Knowing he was unmatched by his son, he decided to make it seem he had died in battle and fell to the ground. A Skrall Warrior that stayed loyal to Vrakos declared him dead before "Disposing" of the body, and helped his former leader escape out fo the fortress. Vrakos managed to narrowly avoided the Batterra and wandered the desert in self exile for the remainder of his days.

I spent too much time on this. More Spherus Magnan headcanons below:
This whole drawing is mostly just showcasing Artara's shapeshifting, plus refining my Skrall headcanons. I wanted to show how not just the height was different, but also things like coloration, body type, proportions, etc. Even included Cassidy's original human form as a frame of reference.
Cassidy's depression uniform is deliberate; she did not start out the story having a good time, even before getting zorped into another reality.
Going from left to right, we have Tuma as our Leader Skrall example, Stronius as our Elite Skrall example, some random young Warrior Skrall, before going to Arra's different forms: Sister of the Skrall, Glatorian, human, Bone Hunter, and Agori.
Figuring out how to turn the Skrall armors into something wearable on a mostly humanoid shape was a bitch and a half and probably doubled the length of this drawing's time. Originally it was just Artara's different forms but I wanted to add the guys for a little extra fun and it was more than I expected, by far.
I tend to imagine that the Skrall are, as a whole, extremely repressed. You could probably make a few of 'em faint just by showing them a Playboy magazine, poor bastards.
On a more serious note, my headcanons for how Skrall society, ahem, perpetuates itself are very regimented. Marriages are arranged affairs mostly dictated by the legion's Leader and the matriarch of the Sister clan being negotiated with. It's a very bureaucratic process that, if it goes right, means the guy is set up with whoever the Leader and matriarch settle on, whom he only really gets to visit a few times per year. But, as you can only apply if you've earned a name, it acted as a pretty strong motivator for young Elite and Warrior Skrall to impress their Leader.
Also, because they were so divided, Sisters of the Skrall tended to make a point of obscuring their true appearance from the males. Nothing is more awkward than hearing the thoughts of guys who haven't seen a woman their own species in sometimes thousands of years. Hence why the guys in this are so befuddled and even flustered at Artara's Skrall form - she's not exactly dressed to their standards of modesty.
Only the Skrall have this noteworthy disparity in size between males and females on average (also, coloration; like peafowl, the females tend to have more camouflage, while the males tend to have much brighter coloration); Glatorian, Agori, and Bone Hunters tend to be pretty equal footing between sexes.
Wanted to differentiate the body types of the different species through Arra's shapeshifting.

Do you ever think Bara Magna true to a desert would have a Monsoon Season? Where there would be heavy rains and thunderstorms that would last for hours if not days and cause major floodings
So yeah Bara Magna would have water besides from Tajun but it could be devastating from all those floods
Vulcanus definitely makes sure to prepare when the first signs of the season so their forges don't extinguish and loose the lava from the insane amounts of water
Tesara isn't normally used to the huge floods due to their plants being low water based (meaning they can go a LONG WHILE without water, such as Cati but ofc the Thornoraxx plant) and some times some plants die due to the insanely large amounts of water
Tajun is the second most prepared for them next to Vulcanus and use this for more water (even tho their the main water trade on Bara Magna of the villages), you would occasionally find Terix trying to get Kiina inside because she's just laying on her back in the rain with the biggest smile as the rain falls (Berix would literally be hiding away in Vulcanus to avoid the monsoons, Ackar would actually offer the kid to stay at his place to make sure he doesn't get sick from the storms)
Iconox is usually the least prepared due to being in the mountains, all the villagers do is being stuff indoors mainly in their arena areas and get buckets and other containers ready to collect water
Skrall and Bone Hunters use this time for any Agori or Glatorian they capture to give them the slow torment death of drowning to amuse them (alongside multiple resuscitations and drownings to watch them drown multiple times)
Most of it includes setting out containers to capture water since water outside of Tajun is scarce
There would be ofc the foolish ones who go out of their villages during these storms which would lead to some veteran Glatorians to find them in either a) a successful rescue mission, b) they take shelter till a storm passes or the search party to find them or c) Skrall or Bone Hunters would find them to take them back to their villages to do their drownings
I could add some angst shit for Berix (bc I wanna traumatize the kid more than he already is) but that's up to you

Just realized Greg was probably paying homage to John Carpenter’s The Thing with the frozen setting of Fall and Rise of the Skrall. A secluded outpost, isolated and with few resources because of the frost... An unknowable killer that they gradually learn more about, especially with clever tests and tricks. It has the ability to disguise and impersonate, you can’t trust anyone. The outpost goes down in flames. The horror and mystery of a monster out in the blizzard, the dog coming from the base like the Baterra disguised as Agori with supplies. The Agori speculating on ghosts released from the ground by the Shattering, while we know the Thing was buried until the Norwegians unearthed it.
